I water mine at 5AM. If it is a hot, sunny day I will turn it on in the afternoon as well. I think both answers could be correct because its widely known to water in the early morning, but also the afternoon sun gets very hot too.

Your yard might be lacking some nutrients as well. You can go get a soil sample done that will tell you exactly what to put in the ground, but you are running low on time. Go grab Scott's lawnstarter, believe it is heavy on the nitrogen and will give your grass deep green color. But that takes some time as well.

gotta agree with kj , your lawn needs fertilzer !

my suggestion : water your lawn starting at 10 pm - 4 am
3-4 times aweek! mon/wed/thurs/sat

gives your ground time to absorb the water before sun hits it !

the days your watering ...i would go buy miracle gro,,for lawns !

they have a spray attachment, that hooks to a garden hose!
do it 2 times , this week ! water all areas .before your sprinkler system turns on !

also most of your local govt. farm agencys will run a free soil sample test to determine if your ground needs any fertilizer ... ironchung out...
