Thursday's List of 13: Random thoughts from Florida.....

            13) "AAU" stands for Amateur Athletic Union, but this week in Orlando, as three national-level summer basketball events take place, you'd be hard-pressed to find someone who is in it just for the true joy of playing. Sports is big business now.

            12) Kids are amateur athletes, but the reality is they're playing for a college basketball scholarship, worth $100,000+; they're playing each game in front of college hoop coaches, some of whom make $1M a year, most of whom make over $100,000 a season, so no amateurs there.

            11) It cost each AAU team $600 to play in a tournament, and there are 72 teams in 16/Showcase, 140 in 17/under Showcase and 166 more in 17/under national championships. That is a total of 378 teams playing $600 a pop, for total of $226,800 in the AAU coffers, so calling them amateur is an oxymoron, in there with "jumbo shrimp" and "military intelligence". .

Thats $226,800, for less than two weeks of tournaments, and before a hot dog, soda or t-shirt is sold.

            10) College basketball coaches have to pay $200 for a packet of information on kids in the tournaments; without this info, they really might as well not be here. We figured that 180 of these packets were sold (intentionally being conservative) so that would be another $36,000 in the bank.

            9) AAU has national basketball tournaments in ages from 8 all the way to senior year in high school; they also have other sports, like girls' softball, boys' baseball, and soccer for both. Am guessing the basketball events for the older kids are the most profitable, but doubt any of them actually lose money.

            8) I am told the Disney Corporation owns AAU, so even if a rental fee for The Milk House is charged, its the right hand of a company paying the left. Renting the high schools and the Champions' Sports Facility is an expense, but referees are in schools/tryouts when they're here, eliminating a big expense.

            7) Former Giants' GM George Young used to say: "Its always about the money......", and it seems to be more true every day.

Spectators have to pay $18 for a pass to 16/Showcase, $26 to the 17/showcase and $43 for national championships (only a scrupulous Disney employee told us it was much cheaper to buy an annual pass for $67)- there's more money to be made.

            6) Seems to me that the only difference between pro sports and "amateur" sports is that in the pros, athletes are getting paid. In amateur sports, they're only ones who aren't getting paid. There's big, big money in amateur sports, and that has been perfectly obvious all week here in Orlando.

Elsewhere in the world, at the halfway point of our trip........
            5) Congrats to former Siena head coach and Dayton assistant Bob Beyer on being named to Stan Van Gundy's staff here in Orlando with the Magic. Coach Beyer had previously been an assistant with the Toronto Raptors.

            4) Rick Pitino passed up Opening Day at Saratoga, and was at Milk House all day, until last game ended. He spent one game seated next to Billy Donovan, as the two watched a Louisiana Select game, along with just about every SEC coach.

            3) Tean Final from Chester, PA had uniforms with Maximize! on back of every jersey, under the number. A unique twist.

            2) West Virginia Select coach Arkell Bruce wins award for the quietest basketball coach ever; after watching game and half of the Select last couple days, I don't think he stood up once when the clock was running. One coach seated near me said seeing a coach act like that "....was refreshing."

            1) Slickest brochure award goes to the Shining Star-Callahan team, which gave out color brochures highlighting careers of the kids on that team. Very nicely done. Of course, it doesn't help unless the kids are good players, but they are slick.
