    Oakland at Seattle
The Mariners should be glad to get home after dropping six straight on the road, including yesterday's 7-6 loss against the Rangers in which closer J.J. Putz blew his first save opportunity after converting 31 straight. Facing league ERA leader Dan Haren (11-3, 2.41) isn't an easy assignment, but the M's are the only team to beat him twice this season. Overall Seattle has won seven of nine against the A's this year and starter Jeff Weaver has pitched solidly enough in recent weeks (2-1, 2.43 ERA in last six starts) to make the Mariners a good underdog pick (+133) according to Dunkel, which has Seattle favored straight up by 1/2 a run. Dunkel Pick: Seattle (+133). Here are all of today's games.

Detroit Tigers at Chicago White Sox (2:05 PM ET)

Tigers right-hander Justin Verlander is a dismal 1-4 with a 6.96 ERA in six career starts versus the White Sox. Detroit picked up a 6-5 victory over Chicago on April 22, with Verlander picking up a no-decision after giving up three runs and four hits over seven innings. SLIGHT EDGE: WHITE SOX
Detroit has won seven of Verlander’s last eight starts and the offense has supplied an incredible 33 runs in his last three victories. BIG EDGE: TIGERS
Chicago’s John Danks was reached for four runs and nine hits in a 6-2 loss to Detroit on April 25. The left-hander has allowed eight runs and 15 hits in 10 2/3 career innings against them. EDGE: TIGERS
The White Sox have had three losing streaks of two games or more with Danks on the hill, as he enters off a 11-2 loss to the Boston Red Sox. SLIGHT EDGE: TIGERS
The White Sox are 4-0 in their last four home games versus a right-handed starter.

Boston Red Sox at Cleveland Indians (7:05 PM ET)

Since the All-Star break, Boston’s Kason Gabbard has pitched like an ace. He’s allowed just one earned run over 16 innings in picking up two straight victories against the Chicago White Sox and Kansas City Royals. EDGE: RED SOX
Gabbard is searching for his first road victory of his career, as he’s posted a 0-3 record and 5.08 ERA in eight outings away from Fenway Park. BIG EDGE: INDIANS
Cleveland starter Cliff Lee is an even 2-2 with a 3.72 in six career starts against Boston. He ended up on the losing end of a 5-3 loss to Bosont on May 28 at Fenway Park, allowing three earned runs and six hits over five innings. SLIGHT EDGE: RED SOX
Lee has given up 19 earned runs and 23 hits in his last 16 innings, as the Indians have lost his last three starts. EDGE: RED SOX
The Indians are 9-2 in their last 11 games as a home underdog.

Atlanta Braves at San Francisco Giants (7:05 PM ET)

Atlanta reliever-turned-starter Buddy Carlyle is making his first career starts versus San Francisco. He has three previous relief appearances against them, allowing three earned runs and four hits over 5 2/3 innings. SLIGHT EDGE: GIANTS
The Braves have won Carlyle’s last three starts, including a 7-4 road victory versus the Padres. It was his first road victory of the season, allowing three earned runs and eight hits over eight innings of work. EDGE: BRAVES
San Francisco starter Tim Lincecum has to be looking forward to his return to AT&T Park, after making three straight starts on the road. The talented rookie has posted 14 scoreless innings over his last two home starts. EDGE: GIANTS
Lincecum is a perfect 3-0 with a 1.32 ERA in four July starts. He’s limited opponents to just four runs and 15 hits in 27 1/3 innings. BIG EDGE: GIANTS
The Giants are 2-8 in their last 10 games versus a right-handed starter.

San Diego Padres at Houston Astros (8:05 PM ET)

Padres left-hander David Wells is a perfect 2-0 in three career starts against the Astros, despite carrying an inflated 5.71 ERA. EDGE: PADRES & OVER
Wells has struggled mightily on the road in 2007, going 2-4 with a 6.25 ERA in eight road starts this season. He’s allowed an incredible 60 hits in just 40 1/3 innings away from Petco Park. EDGE: ASTROS
Houston’s Wandy Rodriguez has a brilliant 5-2 record and 1.81 ERA in nine home starts this season. The left-hander has allowed just one earned run in his last 23 2/3 innings at Minute Maid Park. BIG EDGE: ASTROS
Rodriguez has been reached for 11 earned runs and 16 hits in his last 8 1/3 innings of work. EDGE: PADRES
The Padres are 9-3 in Wells’ last 12 road starts versus a team with a losing record.

Chicago Cubs at St. Louis Cardinals (8:10 PM ET)

Chicago’s Jason Marquis is a perfect 3-0 with a sparkling 2.08 ERA in five career outings versus St. Louis. He picked up back-to-back victories over the Cardinals in consecutive starts this year in April, allowing three earned runs and 12 hits in 13 2/3 innings. EDGE: CUBS
Marquis has posted a 1-0 record in two starts since the All-Star break, but brings in a 6.17 ERA. SLIGHT EDGE: CARDINALS
Cardinals right-hander Braden Looper is an even 2-2 with a 2.62 ERA in 33 career relief appearances against the Cubs. He picked up a 2-1 victory in his only start against Chicago on April 20, allowing one run and five hits over seven innings. SLIGHT EDGE: CARDINALS
St. Louis has alternated wins and losses in Looper’s last five starts, as he comes off a miserable start against Atlanta. The Braves collected seven runs and 10 hits against Looper in a 14-6 victory. SLIGHT EDGE: CARDINALS
The Cardinals are 7-1 in Looper’s last eight starts versus the NL Central.

Los Angeles Dodgers at Colorado Rockies (9:05 PM ET)

Los Angeles starter Brad Penny has picked up victories in his first two starts after the All-Star break, but insiders are quick to point out his second-half slide in 2006. He was just 6-7 with a 6.25 ERA in 15 starts after the break last season. SLIGHT EDGE: DODGERS
Penny is a brilliant 6-1 with a 2.70 ERA in eight road starts this season. The Dodgers have won his last four starts away from Dodger Stadium, outscoring opponents 33-6 over that span. EDGE: DODGERS
Colorado’s Rodrigo Lopez is a perfect 5-0 with a 3.55 ERA in seven home starts this season. The Rockies have won all seven of his Coors Field starts. BIG EDGE: ROCKIES
The Rockies offense has sputtered during Lopez’s last four starts, scoring just six runs over that span. EDGE: UNDER
The Rockies are 14-3 in their last 17 home games.

Oakland Athletics at Seattle Mariners (10:05 PM ET)

Oakland’s Dan Haren is 5-3 with a 2.73 ERA in nine career starts against Seattle. He’s lost both starts versus the Mariners this season, even though he’s allowed just three earned runs over 12 1/3 innings. SLIGHT EDGE: A’S
Haren is suffering through his worst month of the season, as he’s allowed 13 earned runs and 29 hits over 24 1/3 innings. SLIGHT EDGE: MARINERS
Seattle right-hander Jeff Weaver is a disappointing 0-2 during the month of July despite posting a reasonable 3.46 ERA. SLIGHT EDGE: A’S
Weaver is an even 3-3 with a 5.32 ERA in 11 career outings against the Athletics. He tossed five innings of one-run ball against Oakland on June 6, a 7-1 no-decision victory. SLIGHT EDGE: MARINERS
The Athletics are 2-8 in their last 10 games as a favorite.

        Thursday’s MLB betting notes

        Saito set to return

Los Angeles Dodgers closer Takashi Saito could return from a shoulder injury in time to pitch in Thursday’s series opener against the Colorado Rockies. The Japanese righty played catch on flat ground for over an hour on Monday after missing the previous six games.

"We like the way he felt out there," Dodgers manager Grady Little told the Los Angeles Daily News. "I am feeling pretty optimistic he will be available on Thursday."

Saito is having a fantastic season as the Dodger’s closer and has managed 25 saves and just three blown saves so far. He has pitched nearly 40 innings and has an ERA of 1.59.

With the dominant Brad Penny (12-1, 2.42 ERA) taking the mound on Thursday against the Rockies, there’s a good chance Saito will be called into action. Colorado counter with Rodrigo Lopez (5-3, 4.46) and is a +114 underdog with the total set at 9 ½.

        Tigers relief

The Detroit Tigers bullpen has been solid in July, tallying a 4-1 record with a 2.41 ERA in 18 games. But it’s about to get a whole lot better as both Joel Zumaya and Fernando Rodney gear up to return in the coming weeks.

On Monday, Zumaya threw off the mound for the first time since an injured finger landed him on the DL in May. Meanwhile, Rodney had a throwing session on Tuesday and looks set to begin a rehab assignment this week, probably with Triple-A Toledo.

"It is no slam dunk that everything is perfect," manager Jim Leyland told MLB.com. "We think it is. It looks good. But do we know that for sure? No, I'm not that smart. When you get a hitter in there and he starts to put a little more on it, you don't know what is going to happen."

The Tigers, without their two ace relievers, close out a four-game series against the White Sox on Thursday with ace Justin Verlander set to start. He will face Chicago’s John Danks and oddsmakers have Detroit listed as a –159 favorite.

        Pirates can’t blame pitchers

The Pittsburgh Pirates have lost nine of their last 10 games, but it’s not the pitching staff’s fault. As reported on MLB.com, the Pirates starters have allowed two runs or less in 47 of the team’s 97 games this season.

Their bullpen has also done its share. The relievers have managed 23 saves this season and posted a 2.33 ERA in nine games since the All-Star break.

"That kind of had me reared back on my seat in the airplane yesterday," Pirates manager JimTracy told MLB.com. "Case in point – our weekend this past weekend, where the opposition scores three runs in two days and beats us twice."

Not surprisingly, Pittsburgh’s batters have struggled badly this year. They have a combined .251 average with 78 homers and 398 runs scored – the second worst record in the majors.

On Thursday, they face New York Mets starter Oliver Perez looking to improve that form in the finale of a three-game series. The Pirates counter with Paul Malholm and are +180 underdogs with the total set at 8 ½.

        Chopping and changing

With everyday centerfielder Jason Pence on the DL with a wrist injury, the Houston Astros will rotate players through that position on a day-to-day basis depending on particular matchups.

The bulk of the time will probably go to Jason Lane, who posted a .165 average in two months with Houston earlier this season. He was demoted to Triple-A Round Rock in June, but has been handed a second chance after hitting .308 with eight homers in 42 games there.

But manager Phil Garner has said that he will also use shortstop Eric Bruntlett and outfielder Chris Burke in the centerfield position to maximize the team’s offense.

With Lane likely to make the start in centerfield, the Astros take on the Padres on Thursday in the first of a three-game series. Wandy Rodriguez (6-9, 4.446) will face David Wells (5-6, 4.57) on the mound and San Diego is a +106 underdog.

        Timlin back at his best

Veteran Red Sox pitcher Mike Timlin looks to be back to his best after struggling with injuries last year. The 41-year-old setup man has not given up a run in his last 16 innings of work and boasts a 3.31 ERA for the season.

"When he's going good, I can't tell what he's throwing," Boston manager Terry Francona told MLB.com. "From the dugout, you can't tell. That's what I told him last night. I said, 'You're back to where I can't tell.' And I meant that in a good way. When he's throwing good, I just don't know what he's throwing."

Timlin will likely be called upon again on Thursday when the Red Sox look for the series win over the Cleveland Indians. Kason Gabbard (4-0, 2.97) will face Cliff Lee (5-7, 5.95) on the mound and the Red Sox are a –107 favorite.

          SPEAKING

``It's a crazy thing. It's pretty unbelievable that it could actually work out that way.'' - Yankees superstar Alex Rodriguez, after hitting his 499th career home run in New York's 7-1 win over Kansas City on Wednesday. Rodriguez will try for No. 500 on Thursday against Jorge De La Rosa, who surrendered career homer No. 400 to Rodriguez a little over two years ago.

          SEASONS
          July 26

1928 - Bob Meusel of the New York Yankees hit for the cycle for the third time in his career. The Yankees scored 11 runs in the top of the 12th to beat the Detroit Tigers, 12-1, in 12 innings.

1939 - The New York Yankees tied a major league record by scoring in every inning against the St. Louis Browns. Bill Dickey hit three home runs in the 14-1 win.

1962 - Warren Spahn of the Milwaukee Braves set the National League record for home runs by a pitcher when he hit his 31st off New York's Craig Anderson. Spahn dealt the Mets their 11th straight loss with a 6-1 victory.

1970 - Johnny Bench of the Cincinnati Reds hit three straight homers off Steve Carlton of the St. Louis Cardinals. On the same day, Orlando Cepeda of the Atlanta Braves connected for three consecutive homers in an 8-3 victory over the Chicago Cubs.

1991 - Montreal's Mark Gardner became the first to pitch nine no-hit innings against a Dodger home team since Johnny Vander Meer beat Brooklyn at Ebbets Field on June 15, 1938, for his second straight gem. But the Dodgers won in the 10th on two singles off Gardner and Darryl Strawberry's RBI single off Jeff Fassero.

1998 - Trevor Hoffman's bid to set a major league record with 42 straight saves ended when the San Diego closer gave up a home run to Moises Alou on his first delivery in the ninth inning, tying the game. The Padres wound up beating Houston 5-4 in the 10th, but Hoffman blew his chance at history.

2005 - Greg Maddux recorded his 3,000th career strikeout against San Francisco, striking out Omar Vizquel in the third inning of a 3-2, 11-inning victory for the Giants.

MLS kicks and pick: Chivas at New York

Chivas USA at New York Red Bulls (Chivas +260, Draw +225, Red Bulls -118)

A successful start propelled the New York Red Bulls to the top of the Eastern Standings, before defensive problems in June threatened to derail their season. Recently, the Red Bulls look to have shored up that defense, but on Thursday they face a stern test when Chivas USA travel to Giants stadium.

New York's problems started when a defense that didn’t concede a single goal in the first four games of the season was dismantled and traded away. Defenders Taylor Graham, Marvell Wynne, Todd Dunivant and Tim Regan all left the club and the impact was immediate.

The Red Bulls conceded 12 goals in five games in the month of June, losing three and drawing one of those matches. They fell from first in the table to fourth and were it not for the goals of Juan Pablo Angel, they probably would have lost all five games.

July didn’t start much better as the Houston Dynamo hammered them 4-0 in their first game of the month. But manager Bruce Arena is no slouch and he didn’t let those players go without having a plan.

The plan was to build a new defense with young, talented players and it seems that the defeat to Houston was a turning point for the youngsters. Since that loss, the back line of Jeff Parke, Carlos Mendes, Kevin Goldwaithe and Hunter Freeman have conceded just one goal in three games.

"I think we're getting there," goalkeeper Jon Conway told MLSnet.com when asked about the defense. "Guys have been making great tackles and our positioning has been better. We're just getting more comfortable with each other and now we're getting that solidarity back as a group."

The four, who range in age from 22 to 26, have started to gel and a combination of pace from the fullbacks and physical power from the centerbacks has suddenly made them look like one of the league’s best defenses.

The question ahead of Thursday’s game is whether they can continue that form against a Chivas team that has managed two wins and a tie in its last four games. The Los Angeles-based side is known for battling hard in every game and making it very difficult for the opposition to execute their game plan.

This will be a tough test for New York’s fledgling defense, but it should be one they can stand up to. Chivas’ road record of 1-5-2 highlights their inability to grind out results away from L.A.

In fact, the visitors have only scored five goals in eight away games this season, while conceding 14. New York’s back four should keep Chivas at bay, while forwards Juan Pablo Angel and Jozy Altidore go about the business of winning the game for the home team.

                Pick: New York -118

                  MLS Preview

Thursday, July 25, 2007 (All Times Eastern)
CD Chivas USA (7-5-3) at Red Bull New York (8-6-3), 7 p.m.

East Rutherford, NJ - The New York Red Bulls have been banged up - particularly on the backline - the past couple months and heading into Thursday's primetime Major League Soccer tie with CD Chivas USA, that will continue to be the case.

When the Eastern Conference leaders host the California club, central defender Jeff Park will be on the sideline with a hamstring tear he suffered in a 1-0 win over D.C. Sunday. Park's injury comes after fullback Hunter Freeman, who missed more than a month with an ankle injury, is just rounding back into shape. Also, central defender Carlos Mendes just came back recently from a calf injury while Todd Dunivant - traded to Toronto for fullback Kevin Goldthwaite earlier this season - battled injuries before being shipped out of town.

"I don't think any teams out there are feeling sorry for us," New York head coach Bruce Arena said after Sunday's win. "We haven't received any get well cards or anything."

On top of the injuries to the backline, starting goalkeeper Ronald Waterreus has been in and out of the lineup with an ankle injury. Luckily for New York, it has a quality veteran as its backup in net with Jon Conway.

"(Conway has) done well," Arena said. "He brings a great attitude to the team every day. When he's called upon, he comes through.

"Last year I thought he did a pretty good job, but I think he is an improved goalkeeper this year. As 'keepers get into their 30s they get a little bit better and I think Jon is getting a much better feel for how to play, for what he is about and how to read the game."

"I have been around a while so I kind of understand what goes on in the league, how important games are and getting points at home," Conway said. "I kind of understand the position a little bit better now that I have had time to watch some good goalkeepers in this league. In San Jose I had Joe Cannon and Pat Onstad, two of the best goalkeepers this league has had. I think I gained some valuable experience from them and then coming over here it sort of translated over. I'm a bit more mature and a bit more understanding of the job."

Waterreus, who is listed as questionable for Thursday's match, is being pushed by Conway, and if the recent trend continues, could lose his starting position if he can't find a way to stay healthy.

"Obviously I have come in from day one since I got here and competed for the job and done what I think is the right stuff to garner the first spot," Conway said. "In the end I am proud of all my performances. I am proud of the work I have put in here, the other stuff is out of my hands. The boss makes the decision on who plays."

Chivas are coming off an almost two week break in league play with their last fixture being a 2-1 home win over the Columbus Crew. The team heads to the road this week trying to correct its Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde ways. At home this season the team is 6-0-1 while being just 1-5-2 away from The Home Depot Center.

"Over the last two years, there's something about playing for these fans and something about playing for this club that everybody takes pride in," Chivas midfielder Jesse Marsch said about being undefeated at home. "Whether it's here and in Chicago, where we have a lot of our fans come out, you feel a responsibility to try and show that you have a lot of pride in the colors and you have a lot of pride in this team. I think there is an underlying feeling within the whole group about that."

Chivas are currently third in the West, and to gain ground on leaders Houston and Dallas, they are going to have to find a way to get a victory on the road, which they haven't done since June 9 in Chicago.

Easier said than done at the Red Bulls, who are 5-2-1 at Giants Stadium and should have a full compliment of forwards for the first time in over a month.

Leading scorer Juan Pablo Angel returns from a one-game suspension after receiving a red card, Jozy Altidore will be playing his second game since returning from U-20 U.S. National Team duty and veteran John Wolyneic is playing his best soccer of the season - as evidenced from his game-winning goal against D.C. Sunday.

"I think Woly has been huge," Altidore said. "I don't know what he has been eating but he's got to give me some because the way he has been playing basically the last month has been great. He has been a good addition, and he has been working so hard the past three or four months."

He will look to keep that same for, whether it's as a starter or if he comes off the bench Thursday.

"We have a quick turnaround (from Sunday's game to Thursday)," Wolyneic said. "We gave a good effort (Sunday), we just have to keep the momentum and be ready for a good team that is going to come in here looking for points. Again it is a home game and we have to play well and we are definitely going to be looking for three points."

After Thursday's fixture, New York get a break with its next contest Aug. 11 versus Toronto FC, while Chivas plays again Sunday at Kansas City.

                          HOT

Justin Verlander (Detroit Tigers) -The Tigers have scored at least 10 runs in each of Verlander's last three starts and each time, the Tigers came out on top. Bettors who like to play the over have taken advantage of the righty too by cashing in during each of his last four appearances. The Tigers finish off their series with the ChiSox as -163 road favorites and the total is set at 9 ½.

Kei Igawa (New York Yankees) - The Yankees' left-handed rookie has three straight no-decisions, but that hasn't stopped the Yanks from winning those contests. Igawa has lasted only five innings in each of his starts this month, but New York has found a way to go 3-0 in that span. Igawa is listed as a -159 favorite against the Royals.

Buddy Carlyle (Atlanta Braves) - Carlyle has been a real buddy to Braves backers recently. The righty has won three straight outings allowing six runs in his last 22 innings during that span. He has four strikeouts in less than four innings of work during two career relief appearances in San Francisco. Atlanta is listed as +119 underdogs today.

                          COLD

Cliff Lee (Cleveland Indians) - The number on Lee's jersey is 31, but his record in July is 1-3. He's lost each of his previous three outings and his ERA during those appearances is nearly 11.00. His struggles have helped over bettors cash in each time during his personal losing skid. The Tribe host Boston as +101 dogs and the over/under is listed at 10 ½ runs.

Tampa Bay Devil Rays at Baltimore Orioles: (-129, 10)

Steve Trachsel has been a pain in the butt for Orioles backers this season. It seems a month off wasn’t enough to get the right-hander healthy after hitting the DL with an injury to his gluteus muscle. Trachsel was served his seventh loss of the season last weekend when he made his return to action.

In his last five starts, Trachsel has an ERA above 9.00 and Baltimore suffered losses in all five games. Trachsel is 5-7 this year with a 5.05 ERA and has a 34-48 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

The Devil Rays had their way with Trachsel the last time he faced Tampa Bay. He was pounded for six runs on six hits in one of six games this season in which he has pitched fewer than five innings.

                            Pick: Devil Rays +121

Boston Red Sox at Cleveland Indians: (+101, 10 ½)

BoSox young lefty Kason Gabbard takes his undefeated record on the road Thursday – a place where he is yet to record a win in his 13 games in the bigs.

Gabbard has two no-decisions on the road along with an overall 4-0 record and 2.97 ERA. Over his last three starts, Gabbard has allowed only three earned runs in more than 22 innings pitched.

"Gabby was effective because he was throwing strikes. Kason, lately, has been throwing more strikes and going right at hitters," first baseman Kevin Youkilis told the Berkshire Eagle after Gabbard’s most recent win. "He's been getting the breaking ball and changeups over, and keeping guys off balance."

Last season Gabbard was 0-2 in three road starts with an ERA of 4.73.

                            Pick: Red Sox -109

Los Angeles Dodgers at Colorado Rockies: (+116, 10)

The pressure is on the Dodgers rotation to pitch perfectly, deep into games because star closer Takashi Saito injured his shoulder. But you can exclude staff ace Brad Penny from this list. He’s been doing that all season.

Penny, who ranks third in the MLB money standings this season (10.91 units, or if you wagered $100 on all of his starts, you’d be up $1,091), leads the National League in quality starts with 17. He is averaging 6 ½ innings per start and has pitched fewer than six innings only twice this year.

Penny is 11-2 lifetime versus Colorado with a 2.59 ERA. In his last appearance against the Rockies, Penny gave up only two hits and no runs.

                            Pick: Dodgers -122
