  • Holmes says he wants to play for Chiefs in '07

    Associated Press

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Kansas City Chiefs running back Priest Holmes has informed the team that he intends to report to training camp Saturday.

Holmes told team president Carl Peterson on Wednesday that he wants to play for the Chiefs in 2007, team spokesman Brad Kuhbander said. Holmes is under contract with the Chiefs through 2009.

"In my conversation with Priest, he was excited about playing," Peterson said in a news release.

Peterson said the 33-year-old Holmes might initially be placed on the physically unable to perform list to gauge his conditioning and to see how he feels after noncontact drills. He has not played since Oct. 30, 2005, when he was injured by a hit by linebacker Shawne Merriman in a game at San Diego. The hit left him with head and neck trauma, diagnosed by three spinal specialists.

"I have said many times that I would never count this player out like so many did after his hip surgery," Peterson said, referring to an injury Holmes had in 2002 that prompted the Chiefs to take Larry Johnson with their first pick in the 2003 draft. "He's a very unique human being."

Peterson said the team would "take it slow" to see how well Holmes was doing, "but there's no question that if Priest Holmes is close to what he was before his injury, he'll make a significant impact on the offensive side of the football," Peterson said.

Holmes was cleared to play after being examined by the team's orthopedic doctors in Miami, Kuhbander said.

The 5-foot-9, 213-pound Holmes spent 2006 on the physically unable to perform list. Since joining the Chiefs in 2001, Holmes ranks first in the NFL in averaging 97.3 yards per game and 136 yards from scrimmage.

I wonder if the injury would have been less serious if it was taken from a steroid-less Merriman?

It's horrible watching these NFL players do this to themselves. A lot of people think it doesn't ruin their legacy, but I disagree. Like Jerry Rice for example, yes I remember that he was the best receiver of all time, but it's easier for me to remember those 4 extra years, when he was mediocre at best, because they're more recent.

I agree. While watching Rice in his last few years, it almost made me forget how good he was.

Can Merriman get into the Hall of Fame? Just curious what you guys think, seeing as he already cheated the game

Yes, if he never fails again. I also think a ton of Hall of Famers have not been totally clean.

              LT for example .....

The NFL Hall of Fame has no merit in my book, if they let Lawerence Taylor in they'll let anyone in....Now i think he was one of the best LB ever, but he was a known drug addict and dealer....

Why not? We're living in the steroid era anyway.

I should have asked this also, should Bonds be in the Hall of Fame?

Yes, I'm sure he won't be the only one who used steroids in the Hall.

As far as I'm concerned, this is the steriod era and let's move on, anybody that deserves to be in the Hall of Fame based on numbers should be in. I don't think baseball is ruined, I think it was a great and historical time. I loved the steriod era. When I compare Ruth and Mantle to Bonds and McGwire, I'll say it was different era, the ball parks were smaller, the balls were different, the pitching was diluted, and players took steriods, and that's that, if someone breaks Bonds record, it'll even be more amazing.
