    Six-pack for Wednesday

-- Braves had 4-0 lead in 9th and Hudson on hill, but Giants tied game off Wickman, only to lose it in 13th, when Edgar Renteria got game-winning hit. When Bonds walked in the bottom of 13th, Commissioner Selig was still in the ballpark.

-- Kansas City reliever named Bale faced 11 hitters Tuesday and walked six of them, throwing only 22 strikes out of his 55 pitches thrown. Good way to get sent back to Omaha.

-- Padre pitcher Young left after two innings with an oblique injury Tuesday, more bad news for slumping San Diego.

-- Milwaukee rookie Gallardo is bailing Brewers out; he won 5-3 at Cincinnati Tuesday, and is pitching great. Another Brewer rookie, Parra, gets his first start in twinbill Saturday..

-- The top two teams in AL Central and West combined to go 0-6 on Tuesday, with Seattle, Detroit losing twinbills.

-- A's won consecutive games for first time in 23 days as :Lenny Dinardo posted upset win over Escobar, 4-3.

Wednesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but...............

      13) Got lost driving around suburban Orlando Tuesday, and wound up in middle of a town that looked as if it was being built from scratch; two huge, half-built strip malls on left side of road, nothing on other side of road, non-functioning traffic lights, like an episode of the Twlight Zone. Eerie.

      12) There is private school here called Windemere Prep that costs $10,000 a year to attend, and looks to be pretty new; it is also really hard to find, especially for a nitwit like me. When you get off the beaten path a little bit in Florida, there aren't a lot of places to help get you back on it.

      11) Found out today that not only is Stanford coming to play Siena in America's second-favorite city next season, but the Siena at Memphis game is likely going to be on ESPN, as the Saints get some much-wanted television exposure.

      10) Read tonight where college basketball refs are thinking the NBA's scandal will also hurt their credibility with certain parts of the public. No one in their right mind thinks referees in NBA sare as good as college guys, and the colleges seem to do more to police their guys than the NBA was doing, so I don't think it will be that big of a deal.

      9) Enjoyed some fun games in 17/under Showcase Tuesday, which we'll get into more on Thursday, but the PA Red Storm won both their games, the second in dramatic fashion-- after a teammate missed 7-footer in lane, Devon White tapped ball in with his left hand to give Storm a dramatic, if ugly, 52-51 win.

      8) Little (5-9) lefty point guard Andrew Rogers of Philadelphia Patriots drew lot of attention from small college coaches, but his team got whacked by Full Package squad from Chicago. The little guy is fun to watch, though.

      7) Craig Biggio hit a grand slam on same day he announced that this is his last season as an active player. With 3,000+ hits, Biggio seems like a lock for the Hall of Fame.

      6) Solid marketing by the Orioles, who drew 42,000+ against the Devil Rays on a Tuesday, thanks to ceremony sending Cal Ripken Jr off to Cooperstown for induction ceremonies this weekend. Rays were polite guests and got shut out.

      5) Its nice to have choices in life; the Pittsburgh Storm's Mike Shanahan, whose dad coaches his AAU team, has an offer on table from West Virginia in football, and is being pursued in hoops by Siena, Akron and Bucknell, among others. He is a solid fundamental player and a good student. Shanahan is not related to the Denver Broncos' coach.

      4) Had chance to meet Celtics' coach Doc Rivers at Poinciana HS, after his son Austin's game; what a good guy he is. From now on, as long as he is Boston's coach, we root for the C's.

      3) Interesting note on casinos: Turning Stone Casino, out in Verona, NY, had a choice; either sell alcohol and limit age of patrons to 21, or let in 18-20 year olds and not serve booze. Because there are so many colleges around, they choose not to serve alcohol, to cash in on the 18-20 demographic. Nice.

      2) Is interesting to walk up to a court where you don't know the teams playing, and gauge the level of players in the game by what college coaches are courtside. You see Mississippi State and Clemson courtside, you've got players; you see the University of Chicago and Emory, you've got students.

      1) Finally found out the name of the kid from the Birmingham Storm who dominated the 16/under Showcase games I was at over weekend: Demarcus Cousins. Remember this name; he'll be a force to be reckoned with wherever he decides to play. And thanks to the SEC assistant coach who clued me in.

          Tips and Trends
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oakland Athletics at Los Angeles Angels (3:35 PM ET)

Oakland’s Joe Blanton is a dismal 1-6 in 11 career outings versus Los Angeles despite carrying a respectable 3.60 ERA. He picked up a 2-1 victory in his second start of the season against the Angels, going 5 1/3 innings and allowing just a single run. SLIGHT EDGE: A’S
Blanton’s been unimpressive in four July starts, posting a 1-3 record and 4.76 ERA. He’s struck out just 10 batters in 28 1/3 innings. EDGE: ANGELS
Angels right-hander John Lackey is a dominant 10-3 with a 2.86 ERA in 20 career starts versus the Athletics. He pitched seven impressive innings earlier this season against them, allowing just a single run and striking out six while walking none. EDGE: ANGELS
Lackey was reached for a season-high seven runs and 10 hits in his last start, a 7-5 loss to the Minnesota Twins. EDGE: A’S
The OVER is 5-2 in Lackey’s last seven home starts.

Boston Red Sox at Cleveland Indians (7:05 PM ET)

Boston starter Josh Beckett picked up a 4-2 victory over Cleveland on May 29, but is 1-2 with a 9.18 ERA in three career starts against them. SLIGHT EDGE: INDIANS
Beckett has been absolutely flawless on the road in 2007, posting a perfect 6-0 record and miniscule 1.71 ERA. He’s allowed just three earned runs over his last 22 innings of work away from Fenway Park. BIG EDGE: RED SOX
Cleveland’s Fausto Carmona will make his first career start against Boston tonight. He was knocked around for five runs and three hits over two relief appearances against them. SLIGHT EDGE: RED SOX
The Indians have won four straight games with Carmona on the hill, outscoring opponents 27-11 over that span. EDGE: INDIANS
The OVER is 8-2-1 in the Indians last 11 games versus a right-handed starter.

Pittsburgh Pirates at New York Mets (7:10 PM ET)

Pittsburgh left-hander Tom Gorzelanny is 0-1 with a 6.75 ERA in two career starts versus New York. In his outing at Shea Stadium last season, he allowed five runs and four hits over four innings of work. EDGE: METS
Gorzelanny is 5-2 with a 3.38 ERA in 10 road starts this season. The Pirates have lost three of his last four starts away from PNC Park, losing all three by just a run. EDGE: PIRATES
New York’s Tom Glavine is 21-12 with a 3.09 ERA in 42 career starts against Pittsburgh. He went 1-0 with a 2.25 ERA in two starts versus the Pirates last year, limiting them to three earned runs over 12 innings. EDGE: METS
The Mets have won five of Glavine’s last six starts, but he’s been reached for six earned runs in two of those appearances. SLIGHT EDGE: METS
The OVER is 15-6-3 in the Pirates last 24 road games versus a left-handed starter.

Milwaukee Brewers at Cincinnati Reds (7:10 PM ET)

Milwaukee starter Jeff Suppan is somehow a perfect 2-0 in his career versus Cincinnati, even though he enters tonight’s game with a 6.37 ERA against them. He faced the Reds just once in 2006, picking up a no-decision and allowing three runs and eight hits over six innings. SLIGHT EDGE: BREWERS
Suppan is a disappointing 3-6 with a 5.56 ERA in 11 road starts this year and the Brewers have lost three of his last four starts away from Miller Park. EDGE: REDS
Cincinnati right-hander Kyle Lohse is 2-3 with a 6.31 ERA in seven career outings versus Milwaukee. He faced the Brewers in just a one-inning relief appearance last year. EDGE: BREWERS
Lohse has been impressive in eight home starts this season despite a 3-3 record, as he’s posted an impressive 2.67 ERA. The Reds have won his last two starts at the Great American Ball Park, as the right-hander has allowed just two runs over 16 innings. EDGE: REDS
The Reds are 1-10 in Lohse’s last 11 starts versus a team with a winning record.

Detroit Tigers at Chicago White Sox (8:11 PM ET)

Detroit veteran starter Kenny Rogers has tallied a 16-8 record and 4.03 ERA in 52 career outings against Chicago. He was an impressive 3-1 with a 0.82 ERA in five starts last season versus the White Sox. EDGE: TIGERS
Rogers has fallen off after his hot start, going 1-2 with a 5.94 ERA in three starts this month. He’s even issued more walks than strikeouts in 11 1/3 innings of work after the All-Star break. EDGE: WHITE SOX
Chicago’s Jose Contreras has pitched very well in his career against Detroit, going 8-4 with a 3.64 ERA in 17 starts. The Cuban right-hander led the White Sox to a 7-5 win over the Tigers on April 21, allowing five runs and five hits over seven innings. EDGE: WHITE SOX
The White Sox have lost nine of Contreras’ last 10 starts and he’s coming off a start in which he allowed a season-high 10 earned runs. EDGE: TIGERS
The UNDER is 5-1 in Contreras last six starts versus the Tigers.

Florida Marlins at Arizona Diamondbacks (9:40 PM ET)

Florida starter Scott Olsen was knocked around in his only career start against Arizona, surrendering six earned runs and nine hits over five innings of work. SLIGHT EDGE: D-BACKS
Olsen has picked up two straight victories over Cincinnati and Washington, as the left-hander has limited opponents to just four runs over his last 12 innings. The Marlins have won five of his last six starts. EDGE: MARLINS
Arizona’s Brandon Webb is 2-3 with a 6.28 ERA in five career games versus Florida. The sinker ball pitcher picked up a victory in his only start against the Marlins last season, allowing two earned runs and seven hits over five innings. SLIGHT EDGE: MARLINS
The Diamondbacks have lost five of Webb’s last six starts due to the team’s lack of offense. Arizona has scored just 12 runs over that span. EDGE: UNDER
Arizona is 4-0 in their last four games versus a left-handed starter.

Atlanta Braves at San Francisco Giants (10:15 PM ET)

Atlanta’s Chuck James is 6-3 with a 4.13 ERA in 11 road starts this season. The Braves have won his last two starts away from Turner Field over the Florida Marlins and Los Angeles Dodgers. EDGE: BRAVES
James has limited experience versus the Giants in three career appearances, going 1-0 with a 1.64 ERA. SLIGHT EDGE: BRAVES
Giants southpaw starter Noah Lowry has posted a brilliant 7-2 record and 2.82 ERA in 10 home starts this season. He’s allowed just two home runs in 60 2/3 innings at AT&T Park this year. EDGE: GIANTS
Lowry is 2-1 with a 4.08 ERA in three starts this month, but has issued 12 walks and fanned just 11 over 17 2/3 innings. SLIGHT EDGE: GIANTS
The Giants are 1-4 in Lowry’s last five starts versus the National League East.

            Wednesday’s MLB betting notes

            Boston gets Big Papi back

Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz is close to a return to the lineup after sitting out the last five days with a strained left shoulder. The designated hitter will take batting practice on Tuesday and should be back for Wednesday’s game against Cleveland.

"I still have a little pain today but it's getting better," Ortiz told MLB.com. "I've got to hit on the field tomorrow and see how it feels and go from there. If I'm fine, I'll play. I always play sore anyway."

Big Papi was batting .321 with 16 home runs and 60 RBIs before a tumble into second base saw him leave Friday’s game against the White Sox clutching his shoulder.

For his expected return on Wednesday the Red Sox send Josh Beckett (13-3, 3.41 ERA) to the mound to face the Indian’s Fausto Carmona (12-4, 3.52). Boston is a –106 favorite with the total set at 9.

            Butler staying hot

Kansas City Royals outfielder Billy Butler has been a revelation since coming up from the minors in May and his hot-hitting form shows no signs of letting up.

Butler has been on fire since the All-Star break, posting a .444 average so far in the second half of the season. Overall he is batting .323 with three homers and 26 RBIs in 35 games this year.

"He’s the best hitter I’ve ever seen," third baseman Alex Gordon told the Kansas City Star on Saturday. "I said it last year when we were together at (Class AA) Wichita. He’s just an all-round hitter."

The Royals will be looking for more inspiration from Butler on Wednesday as they continue a four-game series against the Yankees. Gil Meche (7-6, 3.63) will test his stuff against Mike Mussina (4-7, 4.97) and New York is a –140 favorite.

            Padres’ pen problems

The San Diego Padres bullpen has long been considered the backbone of the team, but they have had their problems recently. The Padres lost four games in a row through Monday and the bullpen was at fault for all of them.

In Monday’s loss to the Colorado Rapids, reliever Scott Linebrink inherited a 5-2 lead in the seventh but not could hold on to it and the home team rallied back to a 7-5 win. That was the third game in a row in which the Padres bullpen surrendered five runs or more.

Wednesday’s starter, Justin Germano (6-4, 3.77), will be hoping for better support from the bullpen as he comes up against Colorado’s Aaron Cook (6-6, 4.37). San Diego is a +127 underdog with the total set at 10.

            Berkman plays through pain

Houston Astros first baseman Lance Berkman returned to the lineup on Monday after missing three games with a hand injury, but don’t be surprised to see him rested again later in the week.

Berkman is struggling with a bruised hand and it was heavily taped up on his return to avoid further problems. He told MLB.com after Monday’s game that the injury hadn’t fully gone away.

"It's going to take some getting used to it," Berkman said. "As a hitter, anything wrong with your hand, that's a major deal with how you swing the bat. But now it's gotten to a point where we can manage it a little bit."

Meanwhile, the Astros close out a three-game series against the L.A. Dodgers on Wednesday, sending Matt Albers (2-4, 5.76) to the mound. The Dodgers counter with Derek Lowe (8-9, 3.48) and are –135 favorites.

            A-Rod closes in on 500

New York Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez looks set to hit his 500th home run this week after hitting number 498 against Tampa Bay on Sunday.

The third baseman has been the Yankees hottest hitter so far this season, posting a .313 batting average with 34 homers. Manager Joe Torre expects that form to continue long after his 500th home run.

"To me, Alex is just stopping off here at 500," Torre told the New York Times on Monday. "It’s not like, oh, good, I made my career. He has higher aspirations than that. Five hundred is the ticket to the Hall of Fame, but this kid, if he stays healthy, God only knows."

The Times also added that no player has hit his 500th home run as a member of the Yankees since Mickey Mantle in May of 1967.

                  Atlanta at San Francisco
The Giants put a scare in Atlanta last night with four runs in bottom of the ninth to force extra innings before losing in the 13th (7-5). Today they should be in a little better position in the early going with Noah Lowry on the mound. Lowry has been lights out at home (7-2, 2.82 ERA in 10 home starts) and makes the Giants an attractive underdog pick (+155) according to Dunkel, which has San Francisco favored straight up by 1/2 a run. Wednesday, July 25

                      HOT

Erik Bedard (Baltimore Orioles) - Baltimore has won each of the last six times the southpaw has taken the hill. He has allowed zero runs in three of those outings and his last three appearanes have played under the total. The Orioles host Tampa as -184 favorites and the total is set at 8 ½ runs.

Gil Meche (Kansas City Royals) - The Royals have a 5-0 record the last five times Meche has taken the bump (but have played over the total in Meche's last three starts). In nine career starts against the Yankees, the righty has an ERA below 4.00, but Kansas City is still a +130 underdog at home.

Ted Lilly (Chicago Cubs) - The North Siders have scored at least seven runs in each of the lefty's last five starts, which has helped backers cash out at the pay window in each of those games. His ERA over that span is under 3.00 and he is attempting to win his sixth straight game for the first time in nearly four years when he was a member of the Oakland Athletics. Chicago is listed at -102 in St. Louis tonight.

                      COLD

Andy Sonnanstine (Tampa Bay Devil Rays) - The Devil Rays rookie is a perfect fit for the club because he knows what losing in the major leagues is all about. He spent just over three years in the minors compiling an impressive 40-18 record in 74 starts, but ever since he put on the big league uniform he has seen much different results. He has been an underdog in all nine of his starts and with good reason – Tampa's record in those outings is 1-8. The Rays are +176 underdogs in Baltimore.

Jose Contreras (Chicago White Sox) - Contreras' days as a money starter appear to be long over. He has lost his last five outings and his ERA in those appearances is hovering above 8.00. He was named to the AL All-Star team last year, but didn't play because ChiSox manager Ozzie Guillen wanted to save him for the stretch run. Well, it looks like the righty left most of his value behind in Pittsburgh because he has suffered 21 defeats since last year's Midsummer Classic, which is the most among active starters since then. Chicago is listed as a +127 home dog against Detroit.

                        Hot Lines

                        Wednesday, July 25

Boston Red Sox at Cleveland Indians (-102, 9)

The present meets the future tonight in Cleveland when this season’s Cy Young frontrunner Josh Beckett faces off against future Cy Young contender Fausto Carmona.

Beckett is tied for the American League lead in wins with 13 while Carmona is only one victory behind with 12. This battle on the hill has Boston priced at a tempting -106 with its ace getting the ball.

The BoSox have won five straight games heading into tonight, including the first two games of this series with the Indians. They seem to be back on track after alternating wins and losses for about a month and a half.

                        Pick: Red Sox -106

Seattle Mariners at Texas Rangers (-108, 10 ½)

The Mariners are 4-1 in Miguel Batista’s last five starts, including his most recent effort in Toronto which happens to be the last game Seattle has won. The M’s are stuck in a five-game rut heading into tonight's Game 3 against the Rangers.

Batista has a 2.85 ERA over his last five appearances and is 2-0 versus Texas this season. During his career, Batista is 3-3 against the Rangers with an ERA of 4.65. He overcame dehydration and illness against the Blue Jays last Friday and will be able to overcome his team’s current slump tonight.

                        Pick: Mariners +100

Atlanta Braves at San Francisco Giants (-103, 8 ½)

The geriatric Giants were up way past their bedtime last night, losing 7-5 in 13 innings to the Atlanta Braves. San Fran’s aging lineup was on the field for over four hours, including Barry Bonds, who played the entire game.

Manager Bruce Bochy isn’t sure if Bonds will play today or not, telling reporters that the left fielder’s status is “wait and see.” Bonds is hitting .175 in the month of July with 10 RBIs and three home runs, sitting two behind Henry Aaron's record number of 755.

Without Barry in the lineup, the Giants have no threat at the plate. They are hitting .241 since the All-Star break with only seven home runs and 18 extra-base hits.

                        Pick: Braves -105
