    Six-pack for Tuesday

-- NFL took the Falcons off the hook by banning Michael Vick from start of training camp; sound move politically.

-- Barry Bonds is just 4 for last 33, with two of the hits home runs, but he has still walked 99 times this season. The way teams shift against him, he can get a hit anytime he wants, just poking ball to left field, but with Giants out of the race, thats apparently no longer an option.

-- Aaron Harang threw 10 innings for Reds Monday, first Cincinnati pitcher to go 10 since Rick Mahler in 1989.

-- Angels have to be worried about Bartolo Colon; he has given up 44 runs in his last 42.2 IP, horrible numbers.

-- Was Mike Piazza auditioning for his new team when he homered and knocked in four runs against the Angels? He has basically been useless to the A's, but is healthy again.

-- Jon Lester was a winning pitcher tonight just by walking to mound, after fighting off lymphoma. He pitched well to boot, in what had to be a very emotional evening.

Tuesday's List of 13: 13 kids who made an impression at the 16-and-under Showcase.........

The kids on this list aren't the thirteen best players I saw over last three days, they're kids who made a positive impression on me while I watched their games, both on and off the court. Their listing is in alphabetical order...............

      13) Shamel Akins, 5-8, Charlotte Storm-- Good distributor of ball, but when he was left unguarded, easily knocked down couple of treys. Looked in total control of his team, and yes, I am partial to good point guards.

      12) Neil Barlow, 6-5, Arkansas Wings-- Tough inside player who pretty much ruled paint in game I saw him Saturday nite, against New Jersey Mid-Atlantic. Can shoot it from 15 feet and in; looks like he'd be a good football player.

      11) James Bell, 6-4, Team STAT-- Old enough to remember Reggie Theus as a player? This slashing forward is only 15, but boy can he get to the hoop on the break. Plays for team that Amare Stoudemire sponsors-- very athletic player.

      10) Antwone Jackson, 6-6 Alabama Lasers-- Outstanding on boards in game I saw him; angular big man who runs floor the way you like to see a big man run. Not sure if he was reason a Clemson assistant was courtside at a Lasers' game.

      9) Blake Jenkins, 6-6 Tennessee Travelers-- Defensive force impressed the Virginia Tech assistant sitting courtside, with a series of blocked shots and strong rebounds. Raw on offense dominant on defense. He can be taught the offensive end.

      8) Emilio Johnson, 6-0 Georgia Blazers-- Hey, he plays at Carver High (same name as high school in White Shadow), so he is the Morris Thorpe of this year's event. Blazers had lot of very good and athletic players- they were fun to watch.

      7) Zaccheus Mason, 6-5, YOMCA Tigers-- In five years I've been coming down here, this kid had, by far, the best dunk; there I am ,walking through his gym on way to concession stand; he drives from top of key, parts three defenders, and slams ball on their head as crowd erupts. Very impressive.

      6) William Moore, 6-5, Tennessee Travelers-- Other bookend forward with Mr Jenkins; the first time I saw this team play, their guards dominated the ball, but against NY Jaguars, club that matched their guards' quickness, the forwards dominated a game that eventually became a surprising rout for Travelers.

      5) Austin Rivers, 6-1, Team STAT-- Had his name listed, then later realized he is Doc Rivers' son; wears same #25, has game that belies fact he will graduate high school in freakin' 2011!! Smooth passer, adequate shooter, you wouldn't know he is as young as he is, unless you looked it up.

      4) Candon Rusin, 6-2, Albany City Rocks-- He is from Albany like I am from Vegas (he plays at Twin Valley HS in Vermont, and has already been offered by U of Vermont), but the kid is an excellent shooter, scrappy in getting loose balls, just one of those kids you'd like on your side.

      3) Jordan Stevens, 6-5, Albany City Rocks-- Saratoga HS kid missed a dunk Saturday night, and from that point on, he was totally dominant in the game; a lefty who is still adjusting to being a wing full-time. Had excellent week, will get interesting variety of D-I offers. He'll need to find his proper level.

      2) Adrian Varilla, 5-3, CKATT (Ontario, Canada)-- Yeah, he is 5-3, and he plays for his dad here, but you know how hard it is to be 5-3 and play at this level? Spunky kid, good at getting out of traps, not afraid to shoot the ball, and seemed to know a good shot from a bad one. Admire the kid's guts.

      1) Eric Yuschak, 6-5, New Jersey/Mid-Atlantic-- Team he was on was kind of dysfunctional, but this kid has passing skills, and likes to use them. They had him inbounding ball against the press. Didn't see enough of him shooting to judge him in that area. He's also playing in 17's, starting Tuesday.

        Baseball – Injury Report

        MLB

        Tuesday, July 24

        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
        Injuries
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

        MLB Infirmary Report

Big-name players abound on the injury lists this week, including Boston's Big Papi and Arizona's Big Unit. Here's the latest news in this edition of the MLB Infirmary Report . . .

Arizona - Randy Johnson P 15-Day Disabled List
The Big Unit is continuing to work his way back from the disabled list, with a simulated game scheduled for this week. There hasn't been a date set for his return to the lineup.

Boston - David Ortiz DH Day-to-Day (strained shoulder)
Ortiz missed Boston's weekend games with a strained shoulder, and he's now expected to rest that injury through the first part of this week. He could come back on Wednesday.

Boston - Curt Schilling P 15-Day Disabled List
Schilling had a successful rehab outing for Pawtucket on Saturday, pitching three shutout innings and recording six strikeouts. He is likely to rejoin the BoSox next week.

Florida - Hanley Ramirez SS Day-to-Day (sore shoulder)
Ramirez was forced to leave Sunday's game after suffering a partially dislocated shoulder during an at-bat. The shortstop, though, could be back playing again Tuesday.

Houston - Roy Oswalt P Day-to-Day (strained chest)
Oswalt had a strong outing on Friday, but he was forced out of the game in the seventh with a chest injury. The team has now announced that he will miss a start Wednesday.

LA Dodgers - Randy Wolf P 15-Day Disabled List
The projected date of Wolf's return to the Dodgers' rotation has been pushed back to the start of August. The lefthander will start making some rehab appearances this week.

Milwaukee - Bill Hall OF 15-Day Disabled List
The Brewers hope to have Hall back from the disabled list at some point this week. The outfielder, who is rehabbing a sprained ankle, will first play some games in the minors.

Milwaukee - Ben Sheets P 15-Day Disabled List
The Brewers' had hoped that Sheets' finger injury was a short-term thing, but he is now expected to miss 4-6 weeks. The Milwaukee ace won't start throwing for a few weeks.

Minnesota - Michael Cuddyer OF 15-Day Disabled List
Cuddyer went on the disabled list late last week with a sprained thumb. The outfielder, who was hitting .289 with 10 home runs and 56 RBI, will be tough for Minny to replace.

NY Mets - Pedro Martinez P 15-Day Disabled List
Martinez threw a simulated game on Monday, and the team will next send him out on a rehab assignment. If there are no setbacks Martinez could return for the stretch drive.

NY Mets - Jose Valentin 2B 15-Day Disabled List
Valentin suffered a broken tibia on Friday night after fouling a ball off his leg. The Mets placed their starting 2B on the disabled list, and he is expected to be gone for a month.

NY Yankees - Jason Giambi DH 15-Day Disabled List
There's little chance that Giambi will return to the Yankees' lineup this month, as his foot injury just allowed him to start taking BP last week. He could come back in mid-August.

Philadelphia - Brett Myers P 15-Day Disabled List
Myers is now making rehab appearances for Clearwater (A), and he could return to the Phillies later this week. He will then attempt to earn back his role as the team's closer.

St. Louis - Chris Carpenter P 15-Day Disabled List
The Cardinals won't be able to count on Carpenter for a late-season boost - he is scheduled for Tommy John surgery and will now be out for at least a full calendar year.

Tampa Bay - Carl Crawford OF Day-to-Day (sprained ankle)
Crawford was forced out of a game against the Yankees on Saturday with a sprained ankle, and sat out on Sunday. However, he's expected to be back in the lineup Tuesday.

          Tips and Trends
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Detroit Tigers at Chicago White Sox – 2:05 PM EST

Detroit starter Jeremy Bonderman is a perfect 5-0 with a 3.84 ERA in nine road starts this season. He’s walked just seven batters and fanned 54 over 58 2/3 innings of work away from Comerica Park. EDGE: TIGERS
The Tigers have won nine of Bonderman’s last 10 starts, including his last four starts. Detroit has outscored opponents by just six runs over his last four outings. EDGE: TIGERS
Chicago has won four of starter Javier Vazquez’s last five starts, mainly because the right-hander has allowed just 11 earned runs over his last 37 innings. EDGE: WHITE SOX
Vazquez is an even 3-3 in eight home starts this season, but could have a much better record with a 3.36 ERA. He’s picked up two straight victories at U.S. Cellular Field. EDGE: WHITE SOX
The UNDER is 8-0 in Bonderman’s last eight starts versus the White Sox.

Pittsburgh Pirates at New York Mets (7:05 PM ET)

Pittsburgh’s Ian Snell has made just two career outings versus New York, allowing three earned runs and seven hits over 6 2/3 innings. SLIGHT EDGE: PIRATES
Snell is a dismal 1-4 on the road in 2007 through nine starts, but has a respectable 3.88 ERA. The Pirates have been outscored 19-2 in his last two outings away from PNC Park. EDGE: METS
Mets right-hander John Maine is 0-2 with a 3.38 ERA in two career starts against the Pirates. He hasn’t allowed a home run to Pittsburgh in 10 2/3 innings. SLIGHT EDGE: PIRATES
Maine has a 3-4 record and 3.64 ERA in nine starts at Shea Stadium this season and the Mets have won two of his last three at home. SLIGHT EDGE: METS
The OVER is 4-0 in Maine’s last four home starts.

Tampa Bay Devil Rays at Baltimore Orioles (7:05 PM ET)

Tampa Bay’s Scott Kazmir is an even 2-2 with a 5.01 ERA in eight career starts against Baltimore. He lasted just four innings on April 18 in a home start versus the Orioles, giving up three runs and six hits over four innings of work. SLIGHT EDGE: ORIOLES
Kazmir has picked up back-to-back win for the first time this season, allowing just one run and seven hits over 13 innings of work. EDGE: D-RAYS
Orioles right-hander Daniel Cabrera is a perfect 4-0 with a 3.56 ERA in eight career starts versus the Devil Rays. He picked up a victory earlier in the season against Baltimore, even though he surrendered six runs and eight hits over six innings. BIG EDGE: ORIOLES
Cabrera is suffering through his worst month of the season, posting a 0-2 record and 6.65 ERA in four July starts. EDGE: D-RAYS
The Orioles are 2-9 in their last 11 games as a favorite.

Boston Red Sox at Cleveland Indians (7:05 PM ET)

Boston starter Daisuke Matsuzaka was blasted for six earned runs and 12 hits in just 5 2/3 innings in his only career start against Cleveland. SLIGHT EDGE: INDIANS
The Red Sox have fallen into a win-loss pattern over Matsuzaka’s last six starts. He picked up a 4-2 loss last time out against Chicago, giving up three runs and two hits over five innings of work. SLIGHT EDGE: RED SOX
Cleveland’s C.C. Sabathia is an impressive 9-2 with a 3.36 ERA in 13 home starts this season. He’s issued just 13 walks and fanned 86 in 93 2/3 innings at Jacobs Field. EDGE: INDIANS
Sabathia has been knocked around over his last three starts, allowing 30 hits in his last 17 innings of work. EDGE: RED SOX
The UNDER is 4-1-1 in Sabathia’s last six starts versus the Red Sox.

Minnesota Twins at Toronto Blue Jays (7:07 PM ET)

Minnesota right-hander Scott Baker was impressive in a no-decision effort against Toronto on June 26, allowing just one run and four hits over seven innings of work. SLIGHT EDGE: TWINS
Baker has shown great control over his last seven starts, issuing just six walks while striking out 33 batters over that span. EDGE: TWINS
Toronto’s Dustin McGowan is 3-1 with a 4.35 ERA in five home starts this season. He’s made his last four starts on the road, but his last home performance was a brilliant one-hit shutout of the Colorado Rockies on June 24. EDGE: BLUE JAYS
McGowan has struggled in eight nighttime starts, posting a miserable 1-5 record and 7.29 ERA. EDGE: TWINS
The Blue Jays are 4-1 in McGowan’s last five starts on Field Turf.

Chicago Cubs at St. Louis Cardinals (8:10 PM ET)

Cubs starter Carlos Zambrano is 6-4 with a 2.43 ERA in 17 career appearances against the Cardinals. The talented right-hander picked up an easy 8-1 road victory at Busch Stadium on April 28. EDGE: CUBS
Chicago has won seven of Zambrano’s last nine starts, as the right-hander has allowed three earned runs or less in each of those outings. EDGE: CUBS & UNDER
St. Louis right-hander Kip Wells is an even 3-3 in 14 career starts versus Chicago, but has a very respectable 3.06 ERA. SLIGHT EDGE: CARDINALS
Wells enters off his most brilliant performance of the season, tossing eight shutout innings in a 6-0 victory over the Florida Marlins. He allowed just two hits while walking two and striking out four. EDGE: CARDINALS
The Cardinals are 6-1 in their last seven home games following a road trip of seven or more days.

Atlanta Braves at San Francisco Giants (10:15 PM ET)

Atlanta’s Tim Hudson is 3-4 with a 4.25 ERA in nine career starts versus San Francisco. He was an even 1-1 with a 8.71 ERA in two starts against them last season. SLIGHT EDGE: GIANTS
The Braves have won five straight games with Hudson on the hill, with his only poor performance coming on July 5 against the Dodgers. He’s allowed just four earned runs in the other four starts during that span. BIG EDGE: BRAVES
Giants veteran starter Matt Morris has enjoyed great success at home in 2007, posting a 3-1 record and 3.28 ERA in nine starts. BIG EDGE: GIANTS
Morris has a disappointing 2-5 career record versus the Braves despite having a better than normal 3.47 ERA. SLIGHT EDGE: BRAVES
The Braves are 4-10 in the last 14 meetings in San Francisco.

                Baseball Today - July 24

                SCOREBOARD

                Tuesday, July 24

                Boston at Cleveland (7:05 p.m. EDT). Daisuke Matsuzka (11-7, 3.99 ERA) faces C.C. Sabathia (13-4, 3.81 ERA).

                STARS Monday

-Frank Thomas, Blue Jays, homered twice to lead Toronto past Minnesota 6-4.

-Javier Valentin, Reds, hit a game-winning single in the 12th inning to lift Cincinnati over Milwaukee 2-1.

-Chad Billingsley, Dodgers, threw a five-hitter for his first complete game and Los Angeles beat Houston 10-2.

-Matt Holliday and Brad Hawpe, Rockies, hit eighth-inning homers to help Colorado rally past San Diego 7-5.

-Sammy Sosa, Rangers, hit career homer No. 603 and drove in five runs during Texas' 8-7 win at home against Seattle.

                COMEBACK

Jon Lester, whose rookie season ended suddenly when he was diagnosed with cancer, pitched six innings to win his first game in 11 months and lead Boston over Cleveland 6-2 on Monday. Lester allowed two runs on five hits while walking three and striking out six.

                CENTURY MARK

Alex Rodriguez singled home Johnny Damon in the ninth inning of the New York Yankees' 9-2 win over Kansas City on Monday to become the first player to reach 100 RBIs this season and the first player to reach the milestone in fewer than 100 team games since Manny Ramirez in 1999. The last time anyone in a Yankees uniform did it? That would be 1937. Couple of guys named Joe DiMaggio and Lou Gehrig.

                ROCKED

Johan Santana allowed four home runs in a game for the first time in 163 major league starts in Minnesota's 6-4 loss to Toronto on Monday. He gave up three homers five times previously but not since May 7, 2004, against Oakland. He allowed six runs and seven hits in five innings, matching his shortest start this season.

                TEN SPOT

Aaron Harang allowed one run on seven hits in and struck out 10 in 10 innings but received a no-decision in Cincinnati's 2-1 12-inning win over Milwaukee on Monday. Harang, who hasn't lost since May 20, became the second pitcher in the majors to go 10 innings this season, joining Toronto's Roy Halladay. He is the first Reds pitcher to go 10 innings since 1989 and the first NL pitcher to do so since 2005.

                SLUMPING

San Diego lost its fourth straight, 7-5 to Colorado on Monday. ... Dontrelle Willis allowed four runs and lost his career-high seventh straight decision in Florida's 4-3 loss at Arizona.

                SNAPPED

Garrett Atkins' run-scoring single in the second inning of Colorado's 7-5 win against San Diego on Monday ended a 21-inning scoreless streak and an 0-for-28 with runners in scoring position slump.

                SPEAKING

''He's the Big Hurt. If you make a mistake, you're going to pay for it.'' - Minnesota's Johan Santana on Frank Thomas, who hit two homers off the Twins' ace in the Blue Jays' 6-4 win on Monday.

                SEASONS July 24

1909 - Nap Rucker of the Brooklyn Dodgers struck out 16 batters in a 1-0 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

1931 - In an 8-7 loss to Pittsburgh, Babe Herman of Brooklyn hit for the cycle for the second time in the season.

1947 - Jackie Robinson stole home for the first time in his major league career in the Brooklyn Dodgers' 4-2 win over Pittsburgh.

1949 - Cleveland pitcher Bob Lemon hit two home runs to lead the Indians to a 7-5 victory over the Washington Senators in the opener of a doubleheader.

1968 - Hoyt Wilhelm of the Chicago White Sox passed Cy Young's major league record when he made his 907th appearance. He retired with 1,070 appearances.

1973 - Bobby Bonds homered and doubled to lead the NL to a 7-1 rout of the AL in the All-Star game at Kansas City.

1983 - The ''Pine Tar'' home run was hit by the Kansas City Royals' George Brett off New York pitcher Rich Gossage at Yankee Stadium. Brett's shot came with two outs in the top of the ninth to give the Royals a 5-4 lead. Brett's homer was ruled an out because the amount of pine tar exceeded what was allowed. After a protest by the Royals, the final out and the Yankees' half of the ninth was completed on Aug. 18.

1993 - Anthony Young of the New York Mets extended his record losing streak to 27 games when he walked in the winning run in the 10th inning for a 5-4 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

1999 - In their biggest victory in 46 years, the New York Yankees routed the Cleveland Indians 21-1 as Chili Davis went 5-for-6 with six RBIs.

                    Atlanta at San Francisco
Last night Barry Bonds and the San Francisco offense were held in check by John Smoltz, who combined with the Atlanta bullpen to beat the Giants 4-2. With San Francisco mired in a 3-9 stretch right now, the Braves look like a good road pick (-140) in this one according to Dunkel, which has Atlanta favored straight up by 2 1/2. Streaking Pitchers

                      Tuesday, July 24

                      HOT

Jeremy Bonderman (Detroit Tigers) - Bonderman ranks No. 21 in the MLB starter money list and is a worthwhile bet as a favorite. The Tigers have been listed at -100 or higher in 16 of his starts this year and Detroit's record in those appearances is a very profitable 13-3. The AL Central leaders have won the last four times he has taken the mound and are 12-1 in his last 13 outings overall.

Tim Hudson (Atlanta Braves) - The Braves have played over the total in Hudson's last four starts and won each of the last five times he has taken the hill. He has earned wins in four of those appearances, lasting seven innings in each of his victories during that stretch. The Braves are listed as -127 favorites tonight against the Giants and the total is set at 8 1/2 runs.

Kelvim Escobar (Los Angeles Angels) - The righty has helped the Angels to wins in each of his last six outings - all as a big favorite. Escobar has allowed two runs total in his three starts this month and under bettors have cashed in each time. The Halos are -175 favorites at home against Oakland and the over/under is set at 8 1/2 runs.

                      COLD

Jason Jennings (Houston Astros) - Jennings' first season out of Colorado has been rocky to say the least. The righty has taken the loss in each of his last five outings and the Astros are 2-10 in his 12 starts. The Astros are 0-7 at Minute Maid Park when he starts there and his career ERA in Houston is above 6.00. Jennings is listed as a slight -105 favorite against L.A.'s Mark Hendrickson today.

Matt Morris (San Francisco Giants) - The Giants have Morris' last four starts with the straight contests in which the righty has given up 18 runs in the process. He has pitched just under 10 innings in his last two outings and failed to get any strikeouts, while allowing 20 hits in that span. Oddsmakers have listed San Francisco at +119.

                        Tuesday, July 24

Los Angeles Dodgers at Houston Astros (-105, 9 ½)

Dodger faithful will be happy to learn that closer Takashi Saito will be on the mound again soon. Saito hasn’t pitched over the last five days because of a sore shoulder but an MRI showed no structural damage.

“Because the MRI is negative, we know we’re not dealing with anything chronically there, arthritis or anything like that,” team trainer Stan Conte told the Los Angeles Times. “It’s just a matter of waiting until he’s ready to go and keep treating it.”

The news isn’t as promising for Astros rookie center fielder Hunter Pence. He’s expected to miss four-to-six weeks with a small fracture in his right wrist.

Pence won’t be easily replaced. The Astros leadoff hitter was batting .330 with 12 homers and 45 RBIs.

                        Pick: Dodgers –103

Tampa Bay Devil Rays at Baltimore Orioles (-106, 8 ½)

Rays manager Joe Maddon has an embarrassment of young athletic talent. Elijah Dukes, Rocco Baldelli and Delmon Young have all seen significant action in center but B.J. Upton appears to be the best fit.

Upton, normally an infielder, has great range in center and Maddon thinks the switch to the outfield has attributed to success at the dish.

“He’s coming out with a clear mind every day, and he knows the defense is something he can just do naturally, thus he can pay more attention to his hitting,” Maddon told the St. Petersburg Times. “And I think you’re seeing what everybody thought he can do.”

Upton won the American League’s co-player of the week along with New York Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano. Upton hit .414 with three dingers and nine RBIs.

Left fielder Carl Crawford is expected to play today after missing the last two games because of a sprained left ankle.

                        Pick: Devil Rays –102

Atlanta Braves at San Francisco Giants (+122, 8 ½)

From the sound of things, the Braves are aggressively seeking help before the trade deadline on July 31. The Braves, not an organization with a reputation for going after big-name players at the deadline, have been linked to trades involving Jon Garland and Mark Teixeira, according to Fox Sports.

These rumors – even if that’s all they turn out to be – should be encouraging to the Atlanta players. If management can go out and add another quality bat or arm, it could be enough to help the Braves overtake the New York Mets in the NL East.

The Giants, on the other hand, are definitely sellers in the trade market. The only thing the San Francisco fans are interested in is Barry Bonds' home run chase.

                        Pick: -130
