    Six-pack for Saturday

-- Mike Mussina threw 47 pitches in third inning alone Friday; he went to full count on five batters in that inning!!

-- Mets' Jose Valentin fouled ball of his leg and broke tibia, so Mets could be in market for another second sacker.

-- Hank Aaron hit 420 of his 755 home runs for Milwaukee, so Barry Bonds didn't get the warmest welcome Friday.

-- Brewers won pennant 25 years ago, and 25 years before that, in '57; can they continue that trend this season?
[ed.note: Milwaukee Brewers, then in the American League, won the pennant in 1982, losing to the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series. In 1957, it was the Milwaukee Braves who won the National League pennant defeating the Yankees in the World Series.]

-- Former ref Donaghy, who is in big trouble, refereed 700+ NBA games, including 20 playoff games. Very bad news.

-- Devil Rays are now 7-6 in last thirteen games against the Bronx Bombers. Go figure.

Saturday's List of 13: Greetings from Central Florida......

      13) Hi -- I'm here for rest of the month-- summer tournaments start Saturday morning at 9, and we'll be covering them from Wide World of Sports mostly, as well as local high schools and Champions Health Club, so log on every day for updates from these interesting events.

      12) Everything moves slower here; traffic, people....there are so many tourists, no one knows where they're going on the highways, so you have to be a little more patient. Already got into two huge traffic jams, and I've only been there 36 hours.

      11) Weather has been fine, except for one huge thunderstorm Thursday; it always seems like a big storm is lurking, late in the afternoon, especially. Hasn't been really hot yet, which is not a complaint, just an observation.

      10) Tangent on what a lousy summer this has been in world of sports: the Vick/dogfighting thing is simply too horrible to put into words, but referee/betting issue is worst thing that can happen to a sport, because it undermines the integrity of the game, which is a disaster.

      9) Behind closed doors, NBA honchos have to be praying it stops with this one guy, who, by the way, was one of refs at the Indiana-Detroit brawl, and also reffed one of games in the infamous Suns-Spurs series, though not fateful Game 5.

      8) The more I think about this, the more I ask myself, did the Falcons know about the dog fighting stuff, and if they did, how long did they know? Trading Matt Schaub is a disaster now-- if front office knew he was into this stuff, they should have kept Schaub, unless no one knew the feds knew.

Here are some of the things I'll be looking for in Florida.......
      7) How will the team from Alaska do down here? They have a 16-year old group playing the NY Gauchos at 10:30 Saturday, so we'll find out pretty quickly how they handle a press.

      6) How much has Marcus Jordan improved? Has he had the laser surgery yet, or gotten contacts? Last year, Michael's younger son was only kid I saw playing with glasses on. You would think Michael could afford contacts or laser surgery.

      5) Will Steve Alford be there in New Mexico red? Or Majerus in his Saint Louis gear? The coaches won't appear until early next week, when the 17/under showcase begins. But they'll be there, or most of them will. Coach Pitino will be in Saratoga.

      4) I'm pretty sure Bob Huggins will be there in West Virginia blue; when I went shopping at the Nike outlet Thursday, the one rack was loaded with purple Kansas State stuff, all due to his coaching there last season, but if it was in the outlets, it didn't sell too well on the mail order end.

      3) I always wonder how many of the big-time coaches really "find someone" at an event like this......normally they already know who they've targeted, but what if a kid who was off the radar completely blows them away? How many times is a kid like that offered a scholarship? Would be fun to know.

      2) Can the current St John's coaches make enough headway in recruiting to become a player again during the season? The wins in recruiting come before wins on court-- their coaches work very hard, it would be nice to it get rewarded. If it isn't soon, they might become the former St John's coaches.

      1) So if you're interested in amateur basketball, log on every day for next 12 days, and we'll keep you posted on what goes on down here, at three tournaments we'll be watching. This is the end of the July evaluation period, where D-I coaches can watch in person- the kids might be a little tired after playing a lot of ball this month, but it promises to be a lot of fun.

Twins right-hander Boof Bonser was blasted for six runs and 12 hits over 5 1/3 innings of work in his only career start against the Angels. SLIGHT EDGE: ANGELS
Minnesota has lost five of Bonser’s last six starts, with the offense failing to score over four runs in any game over that span. EDGE: ANGELS
The Twins are 2-5 in Bonser’s last seven starts versus the AL West.

Baltimore Orioles at Oakland Athletics (9:05 PM ET)

Baltimore’s Steve Trachsel will make his first start since June 29 tonight, after landing on the 15-day disabled list with a leg injury. The Orioles have been outscored 38-22 over his last four starts. EDGE: A’S
Trachsel has been unimpressive in 10 road starts in 2007, posting a 2-6 record and 5.87 ERA in 10 starts. EDGE: A’S
Athletics right-hander Dan Haren is searching for his seventh home victory tonight, as the right-hander has posted an impressive 6-1 record and 2.30 ERA in his first 10 starts in Oakland. EDGE: A’S
Oakland has lost three of Haren’s last four starts, with one of the concerns being that he’s fanned just 15 batters over that span. EDGE: ORIOLES
The UNDER is 9-4-1 in Haren’s last 14 starts overall.

Philadelphia Phillies at San Diego Padres (10:05 PM ET)

Philadelphia veteran starter Jamie Moyer is an even 5-5 with a 4.35 ERA in 13 career starts against San Diego, as he looks to bounce back from his worst start of the year against Los Angeles. Moyer picked up a victory in his only start at Petco Park, allowing two runs and four hits over seven innings. SLIGHT EDGE: PHILLIES
Moyer was drilled for a season-high 10 runs and 10 hits in his last start against the Dodgers, making him 0-3 with a 10.06 ERA in July. EDGE: PADRES
San Diego’s gained victories in starter David Wells’ last four starts, which included three games at Petco Park. The crafty left-hander has allowed just five earned runs over his last 21 2/3 innings. EDGE: PADRES
Wells is 2-1 with a 4.33 ERA in four career starts against Philadelphia. He was touched up for five runs and 10 hits over five innings of work in his last starts versus the Phillies in 2005. SLIGHT EDGE: PADRES
The OVER is 6-0 in the Phillies last six games versus a left-handed starter.

New York Mets at Los Angeles Dodgers (-145, 8 ½)

It’s not quite guaranteed win day at Dodger Stadium, but the home team has to snap to attention after letting the Mets take the first two games of the series.

Luckily the Dodgers are sending Brad Penny to the mound. Los Angeles is 15-4 in Penny’s 19 starts this year and one of those wins was a 9-1 pasting of the Mets on June 13. Penny’s opponent that day was Jorge Sosa, who takes the hill again this afternoon for the New Yorkers.

The afternoon meeting in L.A. is FOX’s Game of the Week and an opportunity for Penny to solidify his NL Cy Young award candidacy. After ending the first half with a poor start, Penny rebounded with a gem against the Phillies last Monday to lower his ERA to 2.33, tied for fourth in MLB.

The Mets still lead the NL East but injuries are going to make their postseason hopes more difficult to achieve. They lost second baseman Jose Valentin for the season with a broken tibia in Friday night’s win.

                          Pick: Dodgers -145

Los Angeles Angels at Minnesota Twins (+101, 8 ½)

Another game, another letdown for Los Angeles. The offensively-challenged Angels gave starter John Lackey five early runs to work with last night in Minnesota but they still lost and had their AL West lead trimmed to just one game.

L.A.’s slump has reached comic proportions. The Angels have played 123 consecutive innings without hitting a home run and today’s starter Jered Weaver has been a frequent victim of his team’s weak offense. The Angels have lost all three of Weaver’s starts in the last month despite his 1.89 ERA over that span.

The Halos beat the Twins 16-3 when Weaver and Boof Bonser last went head-to-head, but that was back on June 4, before the Angels’ bats were cryogenically frozen.

Justin Morneau is easily the biggest threat at the plate in tonight’s game, slugging .628 against right-handed pitching for the season and .650 in the month of July. Morneau hit .410 with eight homers in July 2006 and last night’s mammoth blast off Lackey suggests the reigning AL MVP is ready for another tear.

                          Pick: Twins +101

Philadelphia Phillies at San Diego Padres (-122, 8 ½)

The Padres are honoring one of the greatest hitters in MLB history tonight at Petco Park, but Philadelphia has the lineup more likely to tee off at the plate.

San Diego unveils a statue of Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn before the first pitch of tonight’s game. Gwynn’s lofty .338 career batting average is dwarfed by the Phillies’ .408 mark against left-handed pitching in their last 10 games. Philadelphia has faced two southpaw starters since the All-Star break and won both games by scores of 10-4 and 15-3, respectively.

The Padres have also faced a pair of lefty starters since the break, but managed only four runs in the two games combined. San Diego is hitting just .209 against southpaws over their last 10.

The game pits a pair of 44-year-old left-handers against each other in Jamie Moyer and David Wells. Moyer pitched his worst start in seven years last Monday, but neither he nor Philadelphia manager Charlie Manuel were overly worried about the shellacking in L.A., suggesting that the Dodgers hit a lot of good pitches that would have been outs on other nights.

                          Pick: Phillies +114

                            Saturday, July 21

                            HOT

Kason Gabbard (Boston Red Sox) – The young prospect has gotten better in each of his starts since being called up. He is 2-0 in his last three outings, including his last trip to the mound when he pitched a complete-game three-hitter against the Royals. The Red Sox host the Chicago White Sox tonight with Boston listed as a –169 favorite and the total set at 10 ½. The under is 4-1 when Gabbard starts for the Red Sox this season.

Tim Lincecum (San Francisco Giants) – Lincecum has been dominant recently, going 2-0 is his last four outings and allowing a total of just four earned runs over those starts. The Giants opened a three-game set with the Milwaukee Brewers on a winning note last night. It was just their second victory in their last nine games. Oddsmakers have San Francisco listed as a +125 underdog tonight with the total set at nine.

David Wells (San Diego Padres) – Aside from getting himself thrown out of a game for arguing balls and strikes two weeks ago, Wells has been solid for the Padres recently. He is 2-0 over his last four games with San Diego coming out on top in each of those games. He’s allowed more than one earned run just once during that stretch. Wells comes with a –122 price tag against the Phillies tonight. The total is set at 8 ½.

                            COLD

Boof Bonser (Minnesota Twins) – The man with one of baseball’s most unusual names finds himself in an ugly slump lately. He is winless in his last six starts, with the Twins losing all but one of those contests. He’s allowed three or more earned runs in eight straight games and hasn’t made it past the sixth inning in 10 games. Bonser and the Twins will face the Los Angeles Angels tonight. In his only start against L.A., on June 4, Bonser allowed a season-high six earned runs on 12 hits. Books have the Twins set as +101 home underdogs.

Jamie Moyer (Philadelphia Phillies) – The shifty left-handed veteran who’s known for his consistency has been anything but lately. He’s dropped his last three starts including his most recent outing in which he allowed 10 earned runs on 10 hits in 5 1/3 innings of work. The Phillies are 0-4 the last four times Moyer has taken to the mound. Philadelphia is in San Diego tonight with the Phillies listed as +114 underdogs.
