    Weekend Sports Preview

Sports fans and bettors have their choice between a full slate of baseball, WNBA, Canadian football and Formula 1 racing when planning their summer weekend.

On the diamond, the playoff races are tightening up with August just around the corner. In the National League two division leaders clash when the Mets visit the Dodgers, while the teams that are chasing them also square off when Philadelphia heads to San Diego. Also on the NL schedule this weekend is San Francisco at Milwaukee, St. Louis at Atlanta, Cincinnati at Florida, Colorado at Washington, Houston at Pittsburgh and Arizona at the Cubs.

In the American League, Tampa Bay heads into the Bronx to face the Yankees for four games, thanks to a doubleheader on Saturday. The Red Sox, whom the Yankees are chasing in the AL East, host a three-game set with the White Sox. The rest of the AL weekend schedule includes Kansas City at Detroit, Seattle at Toronto, the Angels at Minnesota, Cleveland at Texas and Baltimore at Oakland.

The women have a busy weekend on the hardwood with a jam-packed WNBA weekend schedule. Friday night’s action tips off with Detroit at Indiana, and is followed by Seattle at Connecticut, Houston at New York, Sacramento at San Antonio, Washington at Minnesota and Los Angeles at Phoenix. Saturday’s two games include Washington at Detroit and Indiana at Chicago. Four more games follow on Sunday, as Seattle visits New York, Houston travels to Connecticut, San Antonio takes on Chicago and Minnesota invades Phoenix.

Arena Football takes a breather this week before Arena Bowl XXI kicks off next week, but there is still some gridiron action up north this weekend in the CFL. This weekend’s CFL action includes Saskatchewan at Edmonton on Friday night, and Toronto at Calgary on Saturday night.

This weekend’s racing schedule is limited to Formula 1. The F1 drivers motor into Nürburgring where Kimi Räikkönen will be looking for his third straight win in the European Grand Prix. There is guaranteed to be a new winner in the Grand Prix this weekend, because retired star Michael Schumacher won at Nürburgring last season.

            Tips and Trends
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Arizona Diamondbacks at Chicago Cubs (2:20 PM ET)

Arizona’s Brandon Webb is a perfect 4-0 with a 2.52 ERA in six career starts against Chicago. He’s allowed just 28 hits in 35 2/3 innings versus the Cubs. BIG EDGE: D-BACKS & UNDER
Webb has struggled in his first two starts this month, going 0-2 with a 5.79 ERA in three starts. The Diamondbacks have been outscored 20-7 over that span. EDGE: CUBS & OVER
Chicago starter Jason Marquis is a disappointing 1-3 in seven career outings against Arizona, even though he’s posted a solid 2.84 ERA. He was an even 1-1 with a 2.57 ERA versus the Diamondbacks in 2006, as a member of the St. Louis Cardinals. SLIGHT EDGE: CUBS
Marquis has been battered around for 13 runs and 20 hits in 15 2/3 innings this month. His 7.47 ERA is more than two runs higher than any other month this season. EDGE: OVER
The UNDER is 7-1-1 in Webb’s last nine Friday starts.

Chicago White Sox at Boston Red Sox (7:05 PM ET)

Chicago right-hander Jose Contreras is 3-4 with a highly-inflated 8.56 ERA in nine career games against Boston. He’s allowed 11 home runs in just 41 innings versus the Red Sox. EDGE: RED SOX & OVER
Contreras has been blasted for 17 runs and 27 hits over his last 17 1/3 innings. He’s 0-2 with a 9.00 ERA in two starts this month. EDGE: RED SOX
Boston’s Josh Beckett has just two career starts against Chicago, posting a 1-0 record and 4.66 ERA. The White Sox have hit three home runs in Beckett’s 9 2/3 innings against them. SLIGHT EDGE: RED SOX
Beckett is 6-3 at home, but his 4.37 ERA at Fenway Park is nearly three runs higher than his 1.71 ERA on the road. EDGE: OVER
The White Sox are 5-0 in Contreras’ last five starts versus the Red Sox.

Houston Astros at Pittsburgh Pirates (7:05 PM ET)

Houston ace Roy Oswalt was blasted in his last start, picking up a 9-3 loss to the Chicago Cubs. He allowed a season-high eight runs in just 5 1/3 and is now 2-5 with a 6.48 ERA on the road. EDGE: PIRATES
Oswalt has enjoyed great success in 20 career appearances against the Pirates, posting an impressive 10-5 record and 2.67 ERA. He picked up a no-decision in his last start versus Pittsburgh, tossing seven innings of one-run ball while allowing five hits. EDGE: ASTROS
Pirates left-hander Tom Gorzelanny is just 1-3 with a 4.84 ERA in four career starts against the Astros. He was 0-2 with a 3.46 ERA in two starts versus Houston last season. EDGE: ASTROS
Gorzelanny has been dominant at times in his nine starts at PNC Park, tallying a 4-2 record and 3.10 ERA. The Pirates have picked up consecutive home victories against Milwaukee and Washington in his last two starts. EDGE: PIRATES
The Astros are 0-6 in the last six meetings.

San Francisco Giants at Milwaukee Brewers (8:05 PM ET)

San Francisco left-hander Noah Lowry is a dismal 0-2 with a 7.88 ERA in three career starts against Milwaukee. He was reached for five runs and nine hits in 5 2/3 innings versus them earlier this season. EDGE: BREWERS
The Giants have won three of Lowry’s last four starts, as the left-hander has allowed just one earned run in three of those starts. EDGE: GIANTS
Brewers right-hander Jeff Suppan is 3-4 with a 4.95 ERA in seven career starts against the Giants. He picked up a victory in his only 2006 start versus San Francisco, going seven innings and allowing three runs and eight hits. SLIGHT EDGE: GIANTS
Milwaukee has grabbed three straight wins with Suppan on the hill at Miller Park, outscoring opponents 21-12 over that span. EDGE: BREWERS
The UNDER is 4-1-1 in Lowry’s last six starts overall.

Los Angeles Angels at Minnesota Twins (8:10 PM ET)

Los Angeles right-hander John Lackey is an even 4-4 with a 4.01 ERA in 10 career starts against Minnesota. He picked up a 8-5 home loss versus the Twins on June 6, allowing six runs – four earned – in seven innings of work. SLIGHT EDGE: TWINS
Lackey has been brilliant in 10 road starts in 2007, going 7-2 with a 2.39 ERA. The Angels have won his last eight starts away from Angels Stadium. BIG EDGE: ANGELS
Minnesota’s Carlos Silva has pitched better at the Metrodome than on the road in 2007, going 4-3 with a 3.75 ERA compared to 3-7 with a 5.34 ERA. The Twins have won his last three home starts, including a 6-0 complete game shutout over Atlanta on June 13. EDGE: TWINS
Silva is a solid 4-1 with a 3.86 ERA in seven career appearances against Los Angeles. He’s walked just eight batters in 44 1/3 innings. EDGE: TWINS
The Twins are 5-0 in their last five games versus the AL West.

Philadelphia Phillies at San Diego Padres (10:05 PM ET)

Philadelphia’s Adam Eaton is 5-2 with a 5.63 ERA in nine road starts this season. The Phillies have picked up losses in two of his last outings away from Citizens Bank Park, as the right-hander has allowed 13 runs in 17 1/3 innings. SLIGHT EDGE: PHILLIES & OVER
The Phillies have alternated wins and losses in Eaton’s last four starts, with his last start resulting in a 10-2 home loss to St. Louis. SLIGHT EDGE: PHILLIES
San Diego right-hander Justin Germano allowed four earned runs and five hits in his only career start against Philadelphia, which resulted in a 9-6 victory back in 2004. SLIGHT EDGE: PADRES
The Padres have lost four of Germano’s last five starts, mainly due to their offense managing just 12 runs over that span. EDGE: PHILLIES & UNDER
The OVER is 4-0 in Germano’s last four home starts.

Baltimore Orioles at Oakland Athletics (10:05 PM ET)

Baltimore ace Erik Bedard is searching for his first career win against Oakland, as the right-hander is 0-3 with a 4.66 ERA in six starts. He allowed two earned runs and six hits over seven innings in a 3-2 losing effort to the Athletics at Camden Yards on May 25. BIG EDGE: A’S
Bedard has been absolutely dominant over his last two starts, tossing 16 shutout innings and allowing just five hits in two shutout victories over Chicago and Texas. The Orioles have won five straight games with him on the mound. His start was bumped back due to a sore neck, but insiders believe he is feeling much better and should be ready to go. BIG EDGE: ORIOLES
Oakland right-hander Joe Blanton is an even 1-1 with a 4.88 ERA in four career starts against Baltimore. SLIGHT EDGE: OVER
After posting a fantastic 3-1 record and 1.58 ERA in the month of June, Blanton is a disappointing 1-2 with a 3.97 ERA in three starts this month. SLIGHT EDGE: ORIOLES
The OVER is 6-2 in the last eight meetings.

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

              Friday’s MLB betting notes

              Tampa totals could totally mislead

The Tampa Bay Devil Rays face the New York Yankees in the Bronx this weekend in what looks to be the safest over bet in all of baseball.

For starters, Friday’s opener will be the Rays’ first second-half road game. Only 12 of Tampa Bay’s 44 first-half road games played under the total. The Rays have also played over the total in nine of their last 12 games.

Friday's game will be the ninth between the Rays and Yanks this season and none of the previous eight played under the total. Edwin Jackson takes the hill for Tampa Bay against New York’s Mike Mussina, the same starters for last Sunday’s 13-run series finale at Tropicana Field. The teams also have a five-game streak of playing over the total at Yankee Stadium.

But bettors should note that the Rays and Yanks scored only 10 combined runs in each of their four head-to-head meetings before last Sunday’s game. Playing the over in those games, in which the total was always set between nine and 10 runs, resulted in either a push or a nail-biting payday.

It might also be a concern that none of Mussina’s seven home starts in 2007 have gone higher than 10 runs.

Astros are lost away from home

The Houston Astros are easily the worst road team in the NL and things are going from bad to worse.

Houston’s 7-6 loss to the Washington Nationals on Wednesday dropped the ‘Stros to 16-33 on the road this season and 3-14 in their last 17. They’re 1-5 since the All-Star break, losing two of three in D.C. after being swept at Wrigley Field by the Chicago Cubs.

"It's very frustrating," Lance Berkman told the Houston Chronicle. "I think we played three pretty good games (in Washington), competitive games offensively.”

Wednesday’s loss dropped Houston to -15.28 units on the road this season, meaning that a $100 bet on the Astros to win in each of their 49 road games would result in $1,528 in losses for the unfortunate bettor.

The Astros face the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park on Friday night, a venue that represents Houston’s road woes as well as any other. The Astros are 0-3 at PNC this year after ending 2006 by beating the Bucs in six straight games in Pittsburgh.

              It’s Miller time!

The Milwaukee Brewers aren’t a great road team either, but that’s not a concern this weekend as the San Francisco Giants come to town. Milwaukee is 8-0 in the teams’ last eight head-to-head clashes at Miller Park, including a three-game sweep in mid-June this season. The Brewers were favored in all eight wins.

Noah Lowry starts for the Giants in Friday night’s series opener and was San Fran’s starter in two of its eight losses during the streak of futility in Milwaukee. Lowry allowed nine hits, three walks and five runs in just 5 2/3 innings on June 18. Prince Fielder and Corey Hart each hit early home runs to leave the Giants left-hander winless in Milwaukee for his young career.

The Brew Crew is 34-15 at home this year, tied with the Cleveland Indians for the top mark in MLB. Milwaukee’s 14.09 units profit from home games more than doubles any other NL team’s home profit.

Milwaukee is 7-2 in Jeff Suppan’s nine starts at Miller Park this year and hopes to make it 8-2 on Friday night.

              A’s ‘O’ gets an ‘F’

The Oakland A’s offensive numbers this summer are difficult to fathom. The A’s are hitting .217 in July and only .191 since the All-Star break. Little surprise, then, that they’re 4-11 in July, 1-6 since the break.

Eric Chavez, who hit home runs in three of his last five games, is expected to return to the lineup for the weekend set with the Baltimore Orioles. It’s not like he’s an offensive savior, though. Twelve A’s have at least 10 at-bats since the break and Chavez is one of the nine among them hitting .208 or worse.

Oakland has played the O’s five times this season, all in Baltimore, and didn’t exceed six runs in any of them. That’s not encouraging news for a team preparing to face Erik Bedard. The Baltimore ace leads the major leagues in strikeouts and pitched a two-hit shutout in his last road game, highlighted by 15 strikeouts.

Bedard was scratched from his scheduled Wednesday start due to a sore neck, but assured local reporters that he’d be fine for Friday’s series opener by the Bay.

                Baseball Today - July 20

                SCOREBOARD
                Friday, July 20

Chicago White Sox at Boston Red Sox (7:05 p.m. EDT). Josh Beckett goes for his 13th win for the Red Sox.

                STARS Thursday

-D'Angelo Jimenez, Nationals, hit a game-ending RBI single with one out in the 10th inning in a 5-4 comeback victory over the Colorado Rockies.

-Tony Graffanino, Brewers, homered and had a two-run double in Milwaukee's 10-1 rout of Arizona.

                ON HANK'S HEELS

Barry Bonds moved within two home runs of Hank Aaron's mark Thursday, hitting Nos. 752 and 753 in San Francisco's 9-8 loss to the Chicago Cubs. It was his 71st multihomer game, second all-time behind Babe Ruth's 72, and second this season. Bonds, who snapped an 0-for-21 slump, hadn't homered since July 3 at Cincinnati.

                BREAKING THROUGH

D'Angelo Jimenez's first hit in 20 at-bats as a pinch hitter this season was a game-winning RBI single with one out in the 10th inning Thursday night, giving the Washington Nationals a 5-4 comeback victory over the Colorado Rockies. Before that at-bat, Jimenez was 1-for-25 overall in 2007. He helped make a winner of Jon Rauch (4-2), who pitched a perfect 10th.

                LUCKY 13TH

C.C. Sabathia became the first 13-game winner in the major leagues despite another shaky start, getting help from Grady Sizemore's long tiebreaking home run in Cleveland's 7-5 victory over the Texas Rangers on Thursday night. Sabathia (13-4), who allowed 13 runs in 11 innings while losing his two previous July starts, squandered a 4-0 lead against the Rangers before Sizemore led off the fifth with a 419-foot homer to right-center field that put Cleveland ahead 5-4.

                STREAKING

Kelvim Escobar won his career-best fifth consecutive decision to help the AL West Division-leading Angels avoid a three-game sweep with a 3-0 victory over Tampa Bay on Thursday. Escobar (11-3), who hasn't lost in eight starts since May 31, gave up nine hits and struck out five over 7 2-3 innings.

                STOPPED SHORT

The Yankees had a five-game winning streak snapped and were denied their first four-game sweep of Toronto since 1995 with a 3-2 loss Thursday.

                HOT CUBS

With a 9-8 win over the Giants on Thursday the Cubs moved to six games over .500 (50-44) for the first time since June 11, 2005, when Chicago was 33-27. The surging Cubs earned their 18th victory in the last 23 games, sixth in seven since the All-Star break and are now the hottest teams in baseball.

                ROAD WARRIORS

Detroit edged division rival Cleveland on Thursday 4-3 in 10 innings. The Tigers now own baseball's best record and are the Majors best team on the road with 32 wins away from Comerica Park.

                SPEAKING

''It's real now. I had to get over them switching those baseballs. Any time that happens, I kind of go into a slide. It's tough because you actually really realize something's going on and you don't really want to think about it. ... But when they stop it for a second and switch baseballs, it's very hard to not know something's happening right in front of you.'' - Barry Bonds, alluding to the the commemorative balls being used when he bats. Bonds moved within two home runs of Hank Aaron's mark Thursday, hitting Nos. 752 and 753 in San Francisco's 9-8 loss to the Chicago Cubs.

                SEASONS
                July 20

1925 - Brooklyn's Dazzy Vance struck out 17 batters and the Dodgers tripped the Chicago Cubs 4-3 in 10 innings.

1933 - Babe Herman hit three home runs, including a grand slam, to pace the Chicago Cubs in a 10-1 rout of the Philadelphia Phillies at Wrigley Field.

1941 - New York's Joe DiMaggio had three doubles and a homer in a 12-6, 17-inning win for the Yankees in Detroit.

1958 - Jim Bunning of the Detroit Tigers threw a no-hitter, beating the Boston Red Sox 3-0 in the first game of a doubleheader.

1970 - Bill Singer of the Dodgers pitched a no-hitter against the Philadelphia Phillies for a 5-0 victory in front of 12,454 at Los Angeles.

1973 - Wilbur Wood of the Chicago White Sox lost both ends of a doubleheader to the New York Yankees, 12-2 and 7-0.

1976 - Hank Aaron hit the 755th home run of his career to lead the Milwaukee Brewers to a 6-2 win over California.

2003 - Albert Pujols became the fourth player to hit 100 home runs in his first three major league seasons with a two-run shot in St. Louis' 10-7 win over Los Angeles.

                Today's birthday: Ben Molina 33.

                      Friday, July 20

                      HOT

Erik Bedard (Baltimore Orioles) – The O’s ace returns to face the Oakland Athletics tonight after missing his last start with a stiff neck. Bedard is 4-0 in his last five with the Orioles coming out on top in all five of those outings. The MLB strikeout leader hasn’t allowed an earned run over his last two starts and has shutout his opponent in three of his last four trips to the hill. Oddsmakers have Baltimore listed as a +102 underdog tonight.

Fausto Carmona (Cleveland Indians) – After a 10-game undefeated streak earlier this season, Carmona appeared to come back down to earth and had some people doubting wondering if he was just a splash in the pan. The young fireballer has responded with a three-game winning streak for Cleveland. Carmona and Indians take on the Texas Rangers tonight with books setting the Tribe as –139 road favorites. The total is set at 10 ½.

Chuck James (Atlanta Braves) – James has been a model of consistency recently, going 2-0 in his last three outings while allowing just 10 total hits and two earned runs over those starts. The Braves host the St. Louis Cardinals tonight as –136 home favorites. In one career start against the Cards, James pitched six innings allowing four earned runs on eight hits but managed to collect the victory. The total for tonight’s contest is set at nine.

                      COLD

Jose Contreras (Chicago White Sox) – Contreras has been absolutely dreadful for the White Sox this season. He is 5-11 with an ugly 5.32 ERA and enters tonight’s game against the Boston Red Sox on a four-game losing streak. During the losing streak he’s allowed five earned runs or more in three of the four games. Oddsmakers have Chicago listed as a +189 underdog and the total set at 9 ½. The White Sox have played over the total is 10 of Contreras’ 16 starts this year.

Brandon Webb (Arizona Diamondbacks) – Last year’s NL Cy Young award winner hasn’t been able to regain that dominant form this season. Webb is just 8-7 with a 3.42 ERA for the D-backs this year and he is winless in his last three outings. Over those games he’s allowed three earned runs or more in each but did strikeout 22 batters along the way. He will face the Cubs tonight with Arizona listed as a –115 road underdog. Webb is 4-0 with a 2.52 ERA in his career versus the Cubbies.

                          Houston at Pittsburgh
Roy Oswalt has not been his usual unhittable self as the Astros ace is just 1-2 with a 5.31 ERA over his last five starts and an even worse 2-5 with a 6.59 ERA on the road this season. As a team, Houston continues to struggle and is 3-8 in its last 11 games. The Pirates haven't been much better (4-7 in last 11, including six straight losses). But Pittsburgh starter Tom Gorzelanny continues to put up solid numbers (3-0, 3.81 over last five starts; 4-2, 3.10 at home). The Pirates look like a good home underdog pick (+122) today according to Dunkel, which has Pittsburgh favored straight up by 1. Dunkel Pick: Pittsburgh (+122). Here are all of today's games.

                            Friday, July 20

Cincinnati Reds at Florida Marlins (-136, 9 ½)

The Reds have won four straight games and their record under interim manager Pete Mackanin is 10-4 after last night’s win over the Fish.

Cincinnati had the worst record in baseball when Mackanin took over, meaning the Reds are regular underdogs. That’s translated to +5.68 betting units during Mackanin’s 14-game stint (i.e. betting $100 on the Reds for each of the 14 games Mackanin's managed resulted in a profit of $568). As happy as Cincy backers might be about their team’s rebirth, the players might be even happier.

"I can't put a finger on it, but coming to the ballpark is a lot different than it was," David Weathers told the Cincinnati Post after Thursday’s win. "We were really tense, but Pete's got a laid-back personality, a funny guy. I think it's filtered on to us and we come in here expecting to win."

Things aren’t as happy in Miami. The Marlins are winners on the road but one of MLB’s worst teams at home. They send Scott Olsen to the hill tonight, making his first appearance since being suspended from the team earlier this week for insubordination.

                            Pick: Reds +128

Cleveland Indians at Texas Rangers (+131, 10 ½)

Texas counted on offensive production from its infield in 2007, but the quartet’s run production hasn’t met expectations. Mark Teixeira’s back in the lineup but Hank Blalock and Ian Kinsler remain sidelined with injuries and shortstop Michael Young will miss tonight’s game for his wife’s grandmother’s funeral.

The Rangers infield tonight will likely feature Teixiera, Jerry Hairston, Ramon Vazquez and Travis Metcalf – not the lineup to help Texas improve its 5-10 record against AL Central opponents.

The Indians won in Arlington last night behind ace C.C. Sabathia and will start ace-in-waiting Fausto Carmona tonight.

Before the 2007 season started, Carmona was known for his disastrous turn as Cleveland’s closer last year. The shellacking Oakland laid on him June 27 prompted fears of a repeat meltdown in the second half, but Carmona rattled off three subsequent wins to allay those concerns. No AL starter induces groundball outs more frequently than Carmona and that’s become especially clear over his last trio of starts in which opposing batters have grounded out 38 times while flying out only nine times.

                            Pick: Indians -139

                            Baltimore Orioles at Oakland A’s (-110, 7 ½)

The A’s have handed Baltimore ace Erik Bedard a loss in each of his two starts against Oakland this season, but both losses came when the A’s knew what they were doing at the plate.

Oakland snapped a nine-game losing streak on Wednesday with its 6-0 win over Texas. The six runs from the offense signified a veritable explosion not seen in the Bay Area since Barry Bonds had teammates to help him out. The A’s averaged just 2.2 runs per game during the losing streak.

"Getting a win was big, and, hopefully, it will point us in the right direction for the rest of the way," shortstop Bobby Crosby told the San Francisco Chronicle after the win. "It's hard to have fun when you're losing all the time, especially when you're struggling like I have been."

Before Crosby gets ahead of himself, however, he should be reminded that he’s hitting .184 since May and is about to face MLB’s top strikeout pitcher. The win was nice but Oakland remains just 4-11 in July, costing everyday backers -10.06 units in just a half-month’s work.

                            Pick: Orioles +102
