    Six-pack for Thursday

-- Look for Kason Gabbard to supplant Julian Tavarez in the Red Sox rotation after Beckett comes back from DL, as their lead in AL East slowly gets smaller and smaller.

-- The Braves signed Julio Franco, who is older than me.

-- Greg Maddux shackled the Mets for five shutout innings, tossing only 65 pitches, then abruptly took himself out, as San Diego bullpen took over from there, and blew save, as two Linebrink walks and a Wright homer tied game in 8th.

-- Neither Lenny Dinardo or Kip Wells allowed run in their starts Wednesday, probably saving both their spots in the respective rotations. Wells had been especially bad.

-- Dontrelle Willis allowed six runs in first two innings; his trade value has to be sinking, as the deadline approaches.

-- Reds swept Braves in Atlanta, winning Wednesday in 15 innings. Contending teams cannot expect to make playoffs if they get swept at home by Cincinnati.

I'm headed to Florida Thursday morning, and for two weeks we'll be reporting from summer basketball tournaments at the Disney Complex, and around the Kissimmee area, so log on every day for reports from the Sunshine State.

Thursday's List of 13: Quick thoughts on way to Florida

      13) How smart do the Chargers look, trading Eli Manning and Michael Vick? Now hiring Norv Turner may not have been a stroke of brilliance, but winding up with Philip Rivers instead of Vick or Manning looks like a masterful move.

      12) Very bad week to be Michael Vick's agent, or someone in the Falcons' front office, especially season ticket sellers. This is a public relations nightmare. At some point, Vick has to be suspended, assuming he is found guilty (the US government doesn't lose much in court), but that would probably next in 2008, not this season.

      11) Why can't you suspend Vick this season? Because in our country, you are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law and that hasn't happened yet, but a sign of the seriousness of things for Vick is that his next hearing is set for first day of Atlanta's training camp, July 26. No kidding around here.

      10) With all this going on, and Joey Harrington currently the #2 QB on Peachtree Street, wouldn't Daunte Culpepper look good in red and black? Falcons need a better backup QB.

      9) How do the Giants not sign Culpepper? Their backup QB is Jared Lorenzen, who hasn't played really since his Kentucky days. Its not like Eli Manning is Elway or Marino, or Peyton.

      8) The first preseason game is only 17 days away, Steelers in the Hall of Fame Game against the Saints in Canton. Too bad the NFL Network has this game, depriving us dish-less folks from enjoying the first game of the season.

      7) Lions vs Raiders in Week 1 means that one of worst two teams in league last year will open 1-0; this is good idea, and should happen every year. The two worst teams from a year earlier that are scheduled to play each other meet in Week 1, guaranteeing that someone gets off to a good start.

      6) The Florida Marlins' president ripped the contract Seattle gave Ichiro Suzuki ($100M, five years) because Ichiro is now 34, and will be 39 when the contract ends. Teams like Florida have to cringe every time a nine-figure contract gets written. The Seattle GM responded by cursing out the Marlins' guy.

      5) If I owned a major league franchise, I wouldn't want a farm team in Vegas or New Orleans; too many distractions.

      4) Wonder if Moises Alou rooted for the Alouettes when he played for the Montreal Expos. Never realized that despite an injury-riddled career, Alou has 321 HRs and a .301 career BA.

      3) If you sit on the grass hill out in centerfield at Petco Park, it only costs $5 to get in. Pretty cheap night out; they have all the concessions out there and a big screen TV for replays.

      2) Stephon Marbury is going to earn $42M over next couple seasons; is this a great country or what?

      1) A psychologist named Jerry Yang won the Main Event at the World Series of Poker, and pockets $8.2M. We'll see a lot of Jerry in the months to come, once ESPN starts airing clips from this year's Main Event.

Note in my fortune cookie Tuesday night
"Don't wait for your ship to come in. Swim out to it."

                  TURNER FIELD TRIUMPH

Phillips drove in Norris Hopper and Ken Griffey Jr. and helped the Reds improve to 8-3 in their last 11 games.

                  BUEHRLE BOUNCES BACK

Mark Buehrle, winless in his previous eight starts against the Indians, beat Cleveland for the first time in more than two years Wednesday. SNAPPED

Oakland ended its longest losing streak in nine years with a 6-0 win over Texas on Wednesday. The nine-game streak was the A's longest since 1998 and had dropped them 12 games out of first place in the AL West. ... Milwaukee's four-game winning streak ended with a 5-2 loss to Arizona.

                  HOME SWEET HOME

                  SPEAKING

''It's a big stew here and we're trying to get the best recipe we can. Hopefully, I stay a piece of it and make this the best-tasting stew we can get.'' - Andre Ethier, after hitting a three-run homer in the Dodgers' 5-4 win over Philadelphia on Wednesday. NL West-leading Los Angeles has won five of six since the All-Star break.

1933 - Rick Ferrell of the Boston Red Sox hit a home run off brother Wes, pitching for the Cleveland Indians. Wes also homered in that game, marking the only time the two connected in the same contest.

                    Streaking Pitchers

                    Thursday, July 19

                    Hot

Chris Young (San Diego Padres) - Here's a quick note to Philadelphia Phillies backers with ace Cole Hamels on the hill tonight: Good luck betting against the hottest pitcher in baseball. With the Padres hosting the Phillies tonight as -125 favorites, there are a ton of reasons to back Young and the Pads. Young hasn't lost since early May and has a miniscule 1.42 ERA over his last three starts. The 6-foot-10 hurler also carries a 0.82 ERA at home this season and has 26 strikeouts against just one walk in his last 19 innings pitched.

Chien-Ming Wang (New York Yankees) - The Yankees' best starter takes the mound tonight at Yankee Stadium pitching as well as he ever has in his career. Wang is 7-0 over in his last nine outings with a 1.40 ERA since June 29. The sinkerballer has been downright nasty at home this season, sporting a 2.83 ERA to go along with a .294 OBP against. Oddsmakers have the Yankees as -222 favorites tonight against the Toronto Blue Jays.

                    Cold

C.C. Sabathia (Cleveland Indians) - Sabathia has given up too many hits lately, and that has led to some unusually bad times for Tribe backers. The big lefty has dropped two straight paydays for the Indians, who are -150 road favorites tonight against the Texas Rangers. Sabathia has a 7.50 ERA over his last three starts while surrendering 27 hits in 18 innings of work, contributing to a 1.67 WHIP.

Matt Morris (San Francisco Giants) - The Giants tend to lose even when their pitchers are throwing well, so here's to making it even more difficult for Giants bettors to make some money. Morris hasn't won a start since June 11 and has posted a bloated 6.50 ERA in his last three trips to the bump. With the Giants listed as +146 underdogs today against the Chicago Cubs, Morris's recent skid has drained much of the value out of struggling San Fran.

                      Hot Lines

                      Thursday, July 19

New York Mets at Los Angeles Dodgers (-121, 8)

Willie Randolph is like an elephant: he never forgets. The Mets haven’t played the Dodgers in more than a month but the New York manager hasn’t forgotten what transpired.

“I take defeats personally,” Randolph told the New York Daily News. “They swept us here last time and we’re looking forward to getting some payback. That’s the way I look at it.

“They beat us pretty good got that little payback for us beating them in the (division) series. We have to return serve. I’m looking forward to the four days.”

Los Angeles starter Derek Lowe has pitched much better than his 8-8 record indicates but Tom Glavine is searching for win No. 299 tonight. The Mets will have enough motivation to take the series opener.

                      Pick: Mets +113

Philadelphia Phillies at San Diego Padres (-125, 7)

This is easily the sexiest game of the night with two excellent pitchers, Cole Hamels and Chris Young, heading to the hill. Assuming each ace pitches well, the game should come down to a battle between the Phillies’ bats and the Padres' bullpen.

Philadelphia collected a season-high 26 hits Tuesday against the Dodgers and manager Charlie Manuel says slugger Ryan Howard still isn’t in his groove at the plate.

San Diego owns the league’s best relief staff (2.63 ERA) but the pen has given up six earned runs in the last two games.

                      Pick: Phillies +117

Colorado Rockies at Washington Nationals (-108, 9)

The Rockies have been hitting the ball so well they’ve been accused of cheating. After getting knocked around for five earned runs in six innings, Pittsburgh Pirates starter Ian Snell had a few choice words for Colorado batters.

“Hopefully I won’t pitch in Colorado because I know who it was (stealing signs) and I will kill that dude,” Snell told the Denver Post. “You can tell (they were giving signals), because some of their hitters were moving around in the box, taking their time in the box, looking up at second base.”

The young Pirates pitcher doesn’t seem to be giving enough credit to Colorado’s hitters. Matt Holiday leads a long list of Colorado players having a great season at the dish.

                      Pick: Rockies +100

                        Cleveland at Texas
The Indians dropped two out of three at home to the White Sox and are now just 4-7 in their last 11 games. Starter C.C. Sabathia has had back-to-back rough outings, allowing 13 earned runs and 21 hits over his last 11 innings. Texas could not complete the sweep of the A's yesterday, but won three out of four to push its record to 7-4 in its last 11. Rangers' starter Kameron Loe looks to bounce back from a bad start and regain the form that made him 3-1 with a 2.88 ERA in his last five starts. Texas looks like a good home underdog (+163) according to Dunkel, which has the Rangers favored straight up by 1/2 a run. Dunkel Pick: Texas (+163). Here are all of today's games.
