    Six-pack for Wednesday

-- Mets' announcer Ron Darling was talking about how he signs autographs even now, glad to be asked as a retired player. I can attest to this, as my godson got his autograph in the airport just last week. Darling is a good guy.

-- Phillies had 23 hits Tuesday, five by Shane Victorino, as they clobbered the Dodgers. Ryan Howard hit two taters.

-- Dodgers are hitting over .300 in their last 27 games, as a switch to new hitting coach Bill Mueller has helped.

-- Ervin Santana pitched six innings for Angels Tuesday; he put 18 runners on base, seven of whom scored. Don't think I've seen a pitcher allowed to stay in to absorb that kind of damage before. Angels' pitching is struggling right now.

-- Mark Teixeira walked four times and also got hit by pitch Tuesday night. Good for the on-base percentage.

-- When Shane Komine came in the 8th inning to mop up yet another A's disaster, he became half of the first-ever Hawai'ian-born battery in majors, with catcher Kurt Suzuki.

Wednesday's List of 13: Random baseball stuff..........

      13) You still hear whiny Red Sox fans complaining about their old manager, Grady Little.......read a prominent NFL writer just today rip him randomly...........but here are Little's records in his 3+ years as a major league skipper........

      93-69/95-67/88-74/53-40......thats 329-250, for a winning %age of .568.........Earl Weaver's was .583, Sparky Anderson's .545, Tony Larussa .525 and Bobby Cox .562. Please be quiet now.

      12) Tony Gwynn gets in the Hall of Fame next week, but the first great San Diego Padre was a first baseman named Nate Colbert, who in Padres' first five seasons, hit 149 homers in a huge Qualcomm Stadium (they later built shorter fences) with 417 RBI. Odd thing, he faded out at age 28, playing for three other teams, but with very limited success.

      11) Sandy Koufax played 12 years in major leagues, but it was really two different six-year careers..................

      1955-60-- 36-40 in 103 starts, with 22 complete games.
      1961-66-- 129-47 in 211 starts, with 115 complete games.

      10) The A's used to have two guys who were pinch-runners and only pinch-runners.........Allen Lewis was 6-29 as a hitter in his seven seasons, but scored 47 runs, stealing 44 bases in 61 tries, plus four more in playoffs.

Then there was Herb Washington, who was a track star, and appeared in 105 games in '74-'75, stealing 31 bases in 48 tries, and scoring 33 runs. He never batted in the major leagues.

      9) Denny McLain was 25 years old when he went 24-9 in '69, finishing a two-year run where he went 55-15, finishing 51 of his 82 starts in those two seasons. But it was over after that; as he went 17-34 the rest of his career, which was over by the time he was 28 years old. What started so brilliantly ended so suddenly, kind of a waste.

      8) The media likes to make fun of Manny Ramirez, but look at this guy's RBI numbers for the last 13 seasons, starting in '94: 107-112-88-145-164-122-122-125-107-104-130-144-102. Just an extremely consistent producer of runs, and a decent fielder. The guy hasn't gotten his due as a great player.

      7) Kenny Lofton has played in playoffs in 10 of his 16 years in big leagues, but with six different teams; why doesn't he ever stick on one team? No one wants to keep him, but there is always someone around who wants to trade for him.....

      6) Orlando Hernandez stole a base for second straight game Tuesday, the first big league pitcher to do steal bases in two consecutive starts since '67, when Mets' Tom Seaver did it.

Some expansion teams have fared well early in their history....
      5) The '62 Los Angeles Angels went 86-76, finishing third in the 8-team American League, in just their second year in the American League; on that team were three future managers in the big leagues....Chuck Tanner, Buck Rodgers, Jim Fregosi.

      4) Colorado Rockies made playoffs as Wild Card in their 3rd season in big leagues, and haven't been back since, with just three winning seasons since then. Rockies had five starters who were 30+ years old in '95; four of them hit 30+ home runs. They only had one starter make 20+ starts, and one win more than nine games, the very forgetable Kevin Ritz (11-11).

      3) Arizona Diamondbacks won 100 games in just their second year as an expansion team, an amazing accomplishment, and they also had winning seasons the next four years, before the roof fell in with a 51-111 trainwreck in '04. Those DBacks also had four starters 30+ years old, three of whom hit 34+ HRs.

      2) Funny thing about the '95 Rockies and '99 Diamondbacks; Armando Reynoso was a starting pitcher for both teams; he went 7-7 in 18 starts for Rockies, 10-6 in 27 starts for Arizona.

      1) Phillies may have 10,001 losses in their history, but in last four years before this one, they won 85-88-86-86 games, so it is not as dire as the media makes you think. Phillies were bad in the old, old days, pre-WWII but in modern times, they've been competitive most seasons.

Oddly, their last down period was the four years they had a manager named Terry Francona, going 285-363 from '97-'00. Red Sox fans probably like Francona better than Grady Little.

          Tips and Trends
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago White Sox at Cleveland Indians (12:05 PM ET)

Chicago starter Mark Buehrle is 7-10 with a 4.61 ERA in 25 career starts against Cleveland. The Indians have reached him for 27 home runs in his 156 1/3 innings against them. EDGE: INDIANS
Buehrle has been dynamite over the last six weeks, going at least seven innings and allowing two earned runs or less in each start. The White Sox have managed to go just 4-3 over that span. SLIGHT EDGE: WHITE SOX
Indians right-hander Jake Westbrook is an even 7-7 with a 5.24 ERA in 21 career outings – 15 starts – versus the White Sox. He went a perfect 3-0 with a 1.69 ERA in three starts against them in 2006. SLIGHT EDGE: INDIANS
Westbrook is an even 1-1 with a 3.38 ERA in five home starts this season. He’s yet to allow a single home run in 26 2/3 innings at Jacobs Field. SLIGHT EDGE: INDIANS

Colorado Rockies at Pittsburgh Pirates (12:35 PM ET)

Colorado’s Jeff Francis is an even 2-2 with an 8.02 ERA in four career starts against Pittsburgh. He’s given up an astronomical 35 hits in 21 1/3 innings versus the Pirates. EDGE: PIRATES
The Rockies have won five out of Francis’ last six starts despite the fact that the left-hander has allowed six earned runs in three of those outings. SLIGHT EDGE: ROCKIES
Pirates right-hander Ian Snell is 1-0 in two career appearances against the Rockies, giving up just two runs and six hits over 7 1/3 innings while striking out 10 and walking one. EDGE: PIRATES
MLB insiders expect Snell to slow down after such a great first-half, as the talented ace is 7-9 with a 4.94 ERA in 29 career outings after the All-Star break. EDGE: ROCKIES

San Francisco Giants at Chicago Cubs (2:20 PM ET)

San Francisco starter Matt Cain is 2-1 with a 3.27 ERA in three career starts against Chicago. He’s allowed just 13 hits and struck out 17 in 22 innings versus the Cubs. EDGE: GIANTS
The Giants have lost nine of Cain’s last 10 starts, as the San Francisco offense has scored more than three runs just once over that span. His lone victory came two starts back on July 4, a 9-5 road victory over the Reds. EDGE: CUBS & UNDER
Chicago’s Carlos Zambrano is a perfect 3-0 with a 3.20 ERA in three career starts versus San Francisco. He threw eight strong innings and allowed just five hits in one start against them in 2006. EDGE: CUBS
Zambrano is enjoying a brilliant month of June, going 2-1 with a 1.77 ERA. He’s allowed just 10 hits in 20 1/3 innings this month. EDGE: CUBS

Toronto Blue Jays at New York Yankees (7:05 PM ET)

Toronto right-hander Shaun Marcum is an even 1-1 with a 5.47 ERA in seven career outings against New York. He worked six shutout innings and allowed just two hits in his first starts versus the Bronx Bombers this season. SLIGHT EDGE: BLUE JAYS
Marcum has come back to earth this month after posting impressive numbers in May and June. The talented right-hander is an even 1-1 with a 6.19 ERA in three starts this month. SLIGHT EDGE: YANKEES
New York’s Roger Clemens is 20-11 with a 3.49 ERA in 40 career starts against Toronto. EDGE: YANKEES
Clemens looks to rebound after a sub-par outing against Tampa Bay in his last start, when he allowed five runs and five hits over 5 1/3 innings. The Yankees are an even 2-2 in his four starts at Yankee Stadium this season. SLIGHT EDGE: YANKEES

Detroit Tigers at Minnesota Twins (8:10 PM ET)

Tigers left-hander Andrew Miller has faced the Twins twice in his rookie campaign, posting a 0-1 record and 9.53 ERA. SLIGHT EDGE: TWINS
Miller has excelled during his five nighttime starts this season, going 3-2 with a 1.80 ERA. One thing will be a bit different in his outing, with the left-hander making his first professional start indoors at the Metrodome. SLIGHT EDGE: TIGERS
Minnesota’s Johan Santana is 11-3 with a 2.64 ERA in 24 career appearances against Detroit. He received 11 runs of support in his last start against the Tigers, which was more than enough during his six innings of one-run ball. EDGE: TWINS
Santana has amassed an amazing 46-10 record and 2.51 ERA in 94 career outings after the All-Star break. BIG EDGE: TWINS

Arizona Diamondbacks at Milwaukee Brewers (8:10 PM ET)

Diamondbacks starter Doug Davis is 2-8 in his 10 road starts this season, even though he carries a respectable 3.73 ERA. SLIGHT EDGE: BREWERS
Arizona has last the last three road games with Davis on the hill, mainly because the offense has managed to score just four runs over that span. EDGE: UNDER
Times have been rough for the Milwaukee Brewers and Chris Capuano, with the team losing nine of his last 10 starts. He’s allowed 12 runs and 14 hits in his last 8 1/3 innings overall. EDGE: OVER
Capuano is 20-16 with a 3.88 ERA in 50 career starts at Miller Park. The tall left-hander is 3-2 with a 4.35 ERA at home this season, but hasn’t picked up a home victory since May 7 over Washington. EDGE: BREWERS

Baltimore Orioles at Seattle Mariners (10:05 PM ET)

Baltimore starter Erik Bedard is 5-1 with a 4.00 ERA in 11 road starts this season. The Orioles have won his last three games away from Camden Yards, as the left-hander has fanned 29 in 20 2/3 innings. EDGE: ORIOLES
Bedard has tallied 16 scoreless innings over his last two starts, dominating Chicago and Texas by fanning 22 batters and walking just 2. BIG EDGE: ORIOLES
Mariners starter Jarrod Washburn is 6-3 with a 4.21 ERA in 11 career outings against the Orioles. He allowed five runs and nine hits in his last start versus Baltimore in just 4 2/3 innings of work. SLIGHT EDGE: MARINERS
Washburn has been an absolute monster under the lights this season, posting a 7-3 record and 2.83 ERA in 13 starts. BIG EDGE: MARINERS

New York Mets at San Diego Padres (10:05 PM ET)

New York’s John Maine is right at home on the road in 2007, going 7-1 with a 2.25 ERA in nine starts. The Mets have won his last two games away from Shea Stadium, as the right-hander allowed just three earned runs over 15 2/3 innings. EDGE: METS
Maine hopes to improve upon his first start after the All-Star break, after allowing seven runs – four earned – over 4 2/3 innings against Cincinnati. SLIGHT EDGE: PADRES
Future Hall-of-Fame pitcher Greg Maddux is an impressive 35-18 with a 3.35 ERA in 64 career starts against New York. He went 1-2 with a 7.36 ERA in three starts versus the Mets last season. SLIGHT EDGE: PADRES
Maddux has struggled mightily in July, posting a dismal 0-3 record and 8.80 ERA in three starts this month. He’s allowed 25 hits and 15 runs in 15 1/3 innings. EDGE: METS

            Wednesday’s MLB betting notes

            Stepping out of the shadows

The Oakland Athletics took a risk this week when they traded an experienced player in order to give a promising youngster a chance. They shipped veteran Jason Kendall to the Chicago Cubs, promoting rookie Kurt Suzuki to the role of everyday catcher.

Kendall was batting .226 with 22 RBIs and two homers before the trade. In his 11 games this season, 23-year-old Suzuki has a .241 average with four RBIs and two home runs.

"Jason's a veteran guy; he's been in the game a long time, he's been through a lot of everything, and he's got a well-rounded background," Oakland manager Bob Geren told MLB.com on Monday.

"But Kurt's learned a lot from Jason and (pitching coach) Curt Young. I think Kurt's going to do a fine job both offensively and defensively. He's shown incredible athletic ability behind the plate."

Suzuki will catch for A’s starter Lenny DiNardo (3-6, 2.78 ERA) on Wednesday as they close out a three-game series against Texas. The Rangers counter with Kevin Millwood (6-7, 5.77 ERA) and are +122 underdogs.

            Diamondback’s road woes

The Arizona Diamondbacks have fallen 4 ½ games behind the L.A. Dodgers in the NL West and that’s mainly due to their poor road form. The D-Backs are 2-9 in their last 11 road games and have a 22-25 overall record away from home this season.

Bookmakers have already adjusted to Arizona's poor road form and they were dogged in all but two of the last 11 games away from home. Brandon Webb (8-7, 3.42 ERA) started both those games.

The main source of Arizona’s problems is batting. Their sluggers have a combined average of .239 with 185 runs scored and 42 homers on the road – the third worst in the NL this season. That’s compared to a .259 mark with 202 runs scored and 45 homers at Chase Field.

Life on the road is not about to get any easier for the Diamondbacks. They follow up the current series at Milwaukee with a trip to Chicago to take on the streaking Cubs.

Arizona sends Doug Davis (6-10, 4.19 ERA) to the mound on Wednesday to counter the Brewers' Chris Capuano (5-6, 5.16 ERA), with Milwaukee the –000 favorites.

            Marlins going deep

The Florida Marlins are not generally considered a big-hitting team, but according to MLB.com they are on course to break the club record for home runs this season.

Florida has gone deep 109 times this season with nine of those homers coming in last weekend’s series with the Washington Nationals. They will hit around 192 homers this season at the current pace. The previous club record stands at 182 and was set in 2006.

Miguel Cabrera leads the way with 21 for the season and Dan Uggla follows him closely with 17. Hanley Ramirez and Josh Willingham have each gone deep 14 times this year.

The Marlins will try to continue their hot hitting on Wednesday as they close out a three-game series with St Louis. Kip Wells (3-12, 6.25 ERA) will start for the Cardinals and face Dontrelle Willis (7-8, 4.81 ERA). Florida is a –134 favorite with the total set at 9 ½.

            Angel’s drought

The Los Angeles Angels were the best hitting team in the majors in June with a .319 batting average, but they have been unable to hit home runs in their last eight games.

Despite having the second-best batting average in the majors (.283), L.A. has gone 76 innings without going deep, matching a club record set back in 1993. In three games since the All-Star break the Angels are batting .269 with 15 runs scored.

Their recent problems hitting the ball into the stands have so far failed to impact the totals one way or the other. In the last eight games, the Angels have been over the oddsmakers' total four times and under three times, with one push.

The Angels have a chance to snap their unwanted home run streak when they face the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in Game 2 of a three-game series. Ervin Santana (5-10, 5.97 ERA) faces Scott Kazmir (6-6, 4.18 ERA) on the mound, with Los Angeles a –106 favorite with the total set at 9.

MLB hot and cold: Streaks and slumps

              HOT

              Los Angeles Dodgers

After much juggling by manager Grady Little, the Dodgers appear to have their best batting order in place. Rafael Furcal and Juan Pierre at the top of the order are doing a great job of getting on base. They’ve combined to score 14 runs in the last five games – all wins.

It could be argued the rest of the lineup is one of the better ones in the National League with Russell Martin, Jeff Kent, Luis Gonzalez and Nomar Garciaparra all hitting behind the leadoff tandem.

The team’s backbone is still its strong relief and starting pitching staffs. If the bats continue to produce the Dodgers might be able to run away from the San Diego Padres in the NL West.

              Minnesota Twins

The Twinkies have won seven of their last 10 and as always the bullpen is the big hero. Minnesota relievers have allowed only three runs in the last nine contests (1.59 ERA).

The lineup is solid one through six but, as Jason Logan writes, this team needs to address the hole at DH.

The Twins' good fortune could easily change as they host the powerful Detroit Tigers and Los Angeles Angels in the next two series.

              New York Yankees

The Bronx Bombers season has been like a teeter-totter – up and down. Lately things have been on the upswing as the Yankees have won nine of the last 12.

The rotation is still iffy behind Roger Clemens, Andy Pettitte and Chien-Ming Wang but at least the bullpen is back on track. The relief staff has surrendered only 10 runs in the last 35 1/3 innings.

There will be some lineup headaches whenever Jason Giambi returns from the disabled list. The Yankees would like to insert him back to the designated hitter role, but Johnny Damon has been hitting there with Melky Cabrera manning center. Manager Joe Torre doesn’t trust Giambi’s fielding at first base so he’ll have to be creative on how to get the slugger regular playing time.

              COLD

              San Francisco Giants

Barry Bonds is slowly climbing the ladder for the all-time home run record, but his team is quickly falling. The Giants have dropped five straight and 18 of the last 26.

They simply don’t have anyone who can hit besides Bonds. Only the Washington Nationals have scored fewer runs than the Giants and, heading into Tuesday's action, there is only one San Francisco regular batting above .280 (Randy Winn).

The team will be sellers at the deadline so the only way for things to improve is if some young call-ups can contribute right away.

              Oakland Athletics

We wrote many stories explaining to bettors about the A’s tendency to turn it up in the second half only to watch Oakland lose its first five games after the break. The Athletics have lost eight straight and 17 of the last 22.

Things might improve if they could ever get healthy but with the luck this team has had, don’t hold your breath.

              Houston Astros

The pitching just isn’t there like it used to be for the Astros. The rotation is middle-of-the-road without Clemens and Pettitte. Ace Roy Oswalt is having an off-year and the pairing of Carlos Lee and Lance Berkman hasn't been as productive as management hoped.

Houston’s lost its last four games, as well as seven of its last nine. The Astros own the league’s worst road record (15-32) and they're 11-16 in one-run games.

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lady luck: Wednesday’s best WNBA bets

New York Liberty at Detroit Shock (-8 1/2, 142 1/2)

Cheryl Ford plays her first game after winning the MVP honors in the WNBA All-Star Game. It was about time Ford got some recognition because she has been the Shock’s most consistent player. The 6-foot-3 forward is averaging 12.8 points and a league-best 10.7 rebounds per game.

“Ford does that all the time,” Eastern Conference and Detroit Shock coach Bill Laimbeer said. “Cheryl gets a double-double almost every game she plays. She’s a brute force in there, when it comes to defensive rebounding especially.”

Ford’s contributions are indispensable to the Shock. Detroit failed to cover in four of the five games she sat out this season.

                Pick: Shock

Houston Comets at Washington Mystics (-4, 157 1/2)

Anyone who predicted a turnaround for the Mystics after a 0-8 start sure could have made some money. Since that dreadful start, Washington is 7-4 both straight up and against the spread.

The Comets have been an even bigger cash cow. Houston – the last team to pick up its first victory of year – has covered in eight of its last 10 contests.

Houston still hasn’t figured out how to play well on the road, so we’ll go with the Mystics in this battle of underdog moneymakers.

                Pick: Mystics

                  STARS

                  Tuesday

-Ryan Garko, Indians, hit a game-tying pinch-hit home run in the ninth inning and singled home the winning run in the 11th to give Cleveland a 6-5 win over the Chicago White Sox.

-Bronson Arroyo, Reds, gave up three hits and struck out nine over seven scoreless innings and Cincinnati edged Atlanta 6-5.

-Robinson Cano, Yankees, drove in the winning run in the 10th inning to lift the New York Yankees over Toronto 3-2.

-Jay Gibbons, Orioles, drove in five runs to push Baltimore past Seattle 8-3.

                  DUELS

Matt Garza allowed an unearned run and three hits in seven innings but took the loss in Minnesota's 1-0 defeat at the hands of Detroit on Tuesday. Nate Robertson gave up three hits in seven innings to win for just the third time in 10 starts. ... Roy Halladay gave up one run and five hits but received a no-decision in Toronto's 3-2 10-inning loss to the New York Yankees. Andy Pettitte fanned a season-high seven over seven innings and also got a no-decision, his sixth of the season when allowing no more than two earned runs.

                  PHILS EXPLOSION

J.D. Durbin breezed to his first major league victory and had three of Philadelphia's 26 hits, Ryan Howard hit a pair of two-run homers and the Phillies routed the Los Angeles Dodgers 15-3 on Tuesday. Shane Victorino and Aaron Rowand had five hits each for the Phillies, who fell one shy of their franchise record and snapped the Dodgers' season-high five-game winning streak.

                  GROUP EFFORT

Rick Vanden Hurk struck out six in five innings to pick up the win in Florida's 4-0 victory over St. Louis on Tuesday. Five Marlins relievers scattered two hits over the final four innings to preserve the shutout.

                  D-RAYS RECORD

Ty Wigginton went 4-for-4 for the second straight game to tie a Tampa Bay record with eight consecutive hits and help the Devil Rays beat the Los Angeles Angels 8-3 on Tuesday. Aubrey Huff had eight straight hits for the Devil Rays from Sept. 22-24, 2004. Wigginton also had four hits in a loss to the New York Yankees on Sunday.

                  STYMIED STAR

Barry Bonds extended his hitless slump to 0-for-21 while pinch-hitting in San Francisco's 4-2 win over the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday night, lining out to left in the eighth inning. Bonds' stretch without a hit is his longest since 21 at-bats from April 5-12, 2001. He is two away from matching a career-worst 0-for-23 drought from July 6-20, 1986, his rookie year.

                  ARROYO STUMPS ATLANTA

Bronson Arroyo, finding his 2006 All-Star form in his 20th start of the season, allowed three hits and struck out nine over seven shutout innings in Cincinnati's 6-5 win over Atlanta. Arroyo (4-10) began Tuesday night's game ranking among the NL leaders in losses, hits and runs allowed. It was the first time he did not allow a run in a start since last Sept. 25.

                  SPEAKING

''I was on a team like this in college. We always feel like we've got a chance to win.'' - Cleveland's Ryan Garko, comparing his current Indians teammates to his days at Stanford. Garko hit a game-tying pinch-hit home run in the ninth inning and singled home the winning run in the 11th to give Cleveland a 6-5 win over the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday.

                  SEASONS

                  July 18

1882 - Ambidextrous pitcher Tony Mullane of Louisville pitched with both hands in a major league game at Baltimore. Normally a right-hander, Mullane switched to the left hand in the fourth inning. He eventually lost 9-8.

1912 - The Chicago Cubs had 21 hits in 11 innings but still lost to the Philadelphia Phillies when Gavvy Cravath stole home.

1927 - Ty Cobb of the Philadelphia Athletics doubled off the glove of Harry Heilmann for his 4,000th hit.

1948 - Pat Seerey of the Chicago White Sox hit four home runs in a 12-11, 11-inning victory over the Philadelphia A's in the opener of a doubleheader.

1962 - Bob Allison and Harmon Killebrew of the Minnesota Twins each hit grand slams in the first inning of a 14-3 rout of the Cleveland Indians.

1970 - Willie Mays bounced career hit number 3,000 through the left side of the infield off Mike Wegener in the second inning of the San Francisco Giants' 10-1 romp over the Montreal Expos.

1987 - New York's Don Mattingly tied Dale Long's 31-year-old major league record when he hit a home run for the eighth consecutive game in the Yankees' 7-2 loss to the Texas Rangers.

1998 - Donnie Sadler's first major league home run was the first of Boston's record four two-out homers in a 9-4 victory over the Detroit Tigers. In the seven-run fourth inning, Darren Lewis, Nomar Garciaparra and Mo Vaughn followed to break the AL record of three held by six teams.

1999 - With Don Larsen on hand to help celebrate Yogi Berra Day at Yankee Stadium, David Cone pitched a perfect game. Cone dazzled the Montreal Expos, throwing the 14th perfect game in modern history to lead the New York Yankees to a 6-0 victory.

2001 - Roger Cedeno was 4-for-5 with a double, triple, two homers and six RBIs in Detroit's 12-4 win over the New York Yankees in the second game of a day-night doubleheader.

2006 - Atlanta became the first team since the 1930 New York Yankees to score 10 or more runs in five straight games following a 14-5 victory over St. Louis. The Braves have scored 65 runs during their offensive explosion that included two 15-run games.

Today's birthdays: Ben Sheets 28; Torii Hunter 32.

                    Streaking Pitchers

                    Wednesday, July 18

                    Hot

Chad Billingsley (Los Angeles Dodgers) - The best move Dodgers manager Grady Little made this season was moving Billingsley out of the bullpen and into the rotation. The young righty is 6-0 on the season with a 1.50 ERA over his last three starts. Billingsley also sports a 4-0 record with an impressive 2.14 ERA in day games for the Dodgers, who are -138 favorites at home today against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Kevin Millwood (Texas Rangers) - Millwood is doing his best to salvage what has been a tough season for the hard-throwing righty. Since June 29, Millwood is 2-0 with a 1.71 ERA to go along with an excellent .262 OBP against and 1.00 WHIP. Millwood's success has been predicated on his ability to keep the ball in park, as he hasn't given up a home run in over a month. Oddsmakers have the Rangers as +109 road underdogs today against the Oakland Athletics.

                    Cold

Greg Maddux (San Diego Padres) - It would be a good idea to stay away from betting the Padres right now when Maddux takes the hill. The future Hall-of-Famer has dropped three straight paydays for San Diego, a -104 pick 'em tonight against the New York Mets. Maddux has surrendered 25 hits in his last 15 innings pitched, leading to a 1.83 WHIP and .405 OBP against in his last three outings.

Julian Tavarez (Boston Red Sox) - The way Tavarez is pitching, he'll likely be the odd man out when Curt Schilling returns to the rotation. Tavarez hasn't won a start in a month and has posted a 8.16 ERA since June 26. Like the aforementioned Maddux, Tavarez is simply allowing too many hits to be any help to BoSox backers. The Red Sox are listed as -180 favorites for their game tonight at Fenway Park against the Kansas City Royals.

                          Wednesday, July 18

Los Angeles Angels at Tampa Bay Devil Rays (-105, 9)

The Los Angeles Angels went toe-to-toe with the Boston Red Sox for the best record in baseball over the first half of the season, but they Halos certainly haven’t been playing like one of the best teams lately.

The Angels are 6-10 in their last 16 games, with most of their struggles coming from a lack of power at the plate. L.A. sluggers haven't hit a home run in ten straight games, their worst run since 1991.

Angels batters have a combined average of .271 since the All-Star break, second worst in the American League. Tonight they face Tampa Bay’s Scott Kazmir (6-6. 4.81) who allowed one unearned run and four hits over six innings against the Yankees in his last start.

                          Pick: Devil Rays –105

Colorado Rockies at Pittsburgh Pirates (-109, 8)

The Colorado Rockies have won eight of their last 11 games and can sweep the Pittsburgh Pirates with a win at PNC Park tonight.

The Rockies can thank their hot hitting for the recent success. They are batting .326 during that 11-game stretch and have scored 30 runs in the last five games.

"We're taking it day-to-day, this team has been good at that," Garrett Atkins told MLB.com after he managed three hits in last night’s 6-2 win. "If you string together a long enough period of time where you're playing good baseball, you're going to be in it."

The Rockies are certainly "in it" and have closed to within 5 ½ games of the Dodgers in the NL West and 4 ½ games of the Wild-Card spot. Colorado sends Jeff Francis – 8-1 with a 3.35 ERA in his last 12 starts – to the mound today. The Pirates are countering with Ian Snell (7-6, 3.11 ERA).

                          Pick: Rockies +101

Chicago White Sox at Cleveland Indians (-137, 9)

The White Sox have lost four of their six games since the All-Star Game and the bullpen is largely to blame. The ChiSox pen has the second-worst ERA in the majors at 6.03 and has blown 16 saves this season.

One of those blown saves came in last night’s 6-5 loss to Cleveland. Closer Bobby Jenks had a two-run cushion in the ninth but surrendered a two-run homer to the Indians' Ryan Garko. The Sox went on to lose in extra innings.

There is some hope for the White Sox tonight as they look for the series win. Starter Mark Buehrle (6-5, 2.98 ERA) has pitched through the seventh inning in his last seven starts.

                          Pick: White Sox +129
