Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend........

    13) ESPN claims to be the Worldwide Leader of Sports, but it should be, the Worldwide Leader in Self-Promotion. Instead of showing the ESPYs live on Wednesday, when they were taped in LA, they show them at 9pm Sunday, meaning Cards-Phillies game started at 6.

    12) Problem is, ESPN has exclusive rights when their Sunday game is on, meaning that none of the 4:00 games could be on the Extra Innings package. Dodgers-Giants, Seattle-Detroit, pretty big games for this time of year. But no, even though I pay decent money to watch the package, they aren't shown because ESPN is showing the ESPYs on tape delay. Terrific.

    11) Devil Rays led Bronx in 7th inning, and they actually put Casey Fossum in game to face a lefty. Problem is, lefties are hitting .350 against Fossum this year-- he has to be the worst pitcher in major leagues. They blow the lead, are now 2-16 in their last eighteen games-- business as usual in Tampa.

    10) Devil Rays have blown eight leads of 3+ runs, most in the major leagues, and thats with a decent closer in Reyes for the better part of the season. Now with Reyes hurt, the bullpen is once again an unmitigated nightmare.

    9) Columbus Destroyers will face San Jose Saber Cats in the Arena Bowl Sunday in New Orleans; Destroyers have won three playoff games, all on road, with last two wins at Dallas and Georgia, two teams that combined to go 30-4 this season. All in all, Columbus will be playing sixth straight road game.

    8) Adam Dunn put a hole in out-of-town scoreboard at Shea Stadium, knocking out couple of lightbulbs with a huge poke in fifth inning. Dunn is a lefty version of Dave Kingman, only he walks more.

    7) Astros were swept in three-game series at Wrigley for the first time since 1984; they're 5-22 in last 27 road games.

    6) It was hot in the east Sunday, but there is Rick Peterson, a pitching coach for Mets, jogging to mound in warmup jacket, not one of the light ones. The guy has it on almost every day but we know his uniform number is 51 (from spring training), but I start sweating just watching him with that jacket on. He says he wears it because he likes to have pockets available.

    5) Phillies' announcer Harry Kalas, a Hall of Famer, has a son in high school who is an aspiring opera singer.

    4) Visiting team is 9-0 in Giant-Dodger games this season.

    3) Ben Sheets left Saturday's game with finger injury, and the Cubs are only three games behind in NL Central. Things are getting dicey at Miller Park; they need a healthy Sheets, and a healthy Bill Hall.

    2) Low scoring set of games Sunday; in 11 of the 15 games, the winning side scored five or less runs. Under was 10-4-1 in Sunday's contests.

    1) Got the idea watching Detroit-Seattle games Saturday and Friday that this series might be a playoff preview. Mariners will need Ichiro Suzuki to be healthy (he left after being hit by a pitch Sunday), but they're a pretty solid team.

      Six-pack for Monday

John Fox is one of the best coaches in the NFL, but he has earned his way there; here is a list of the places he worked between 1978 and 1986.........

1978-- San Diego State, his alma mater
1979-- US International (also in San Diego)
1980-- Boise State (before the blue carpet)
      1981-- Long Beach State
      1982-- Utah State
      1983-- Kansas
      1984-- Iowa State
      1985-- Los Angeles Express (USFL)
      1986-- University of Pittsburgh

Fox's big break was hooking up with Steelers in 1989, after three years at Pitt. His career record in the NFL is 49-38.

          MLB

          Monday, July 16

          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
          Tips and Trends
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Colorado Rockies at Pittsburgh Pirates (7:05 PM ET)

Colorado’s Taylor Buchholz is 1-3 with a 5.67 ERA as a starter this season and 7-12 with a 5.97 ERA in 26 career starts. In relief, however, Buchholz has become a valuable part of the Rockies staff, posting an 0.82 ERA in seven relief appearances. SLIGHT EDGE: UNDER
Buchholz will try to spark a Colorado team that has lost three of four after a five-game winning streak, but he’s 1-1 with a 6.57 ERA in two career starts against the Pirates. SLIGHT EDGE: PIRATES
The Pirates were held to a total of six runs and 17 hits in their last series against the Braves, as they were swept in a three-game set after winning five of six entering the All-Star break. EDGE: ROCKIES & UNDER
Pittsburgh starter John Van Benschoten will look to bounce back from the worst of his five starts since being called up from the minors. He surrendered five runs, seven hits and three walks in 2 2/3 innings of a 7-1 loss to the Chicago Cubs. EDGE: ROCKIES
The Rockies are 1-4 in the last five meetings in Pittsburgh.

Kansas City Royals at Boston Red Sox (7:05 PM ET)

Boston designated hitter David Ortiz is a lifetime .278 hitter against the Royals, but he’s just 22-for-90 in 25 games versus Kansas City with the Red Sox. Among AL opponents, only his .235 average against the White Sox is worse in that span. EDGE: ROYALS
The Red Sox have lost five of their last seven overall, but still lead the AL East by nine games over the New York Yankees. EDGE: ROYALS
Red Sox rookie Kason Gabbard tried to remain perfect at Fenway Park as a starter. The left-hander is 3-0 with a 2.55 ERA lifetime there, including two wins in as many starts this year. EDGE: RED SOX
Gabbard will be making his first-ever appearance against the Royals, who have lost 12 of their last 15 games at Boston since the start of the 2003 season. EDGE: RED SOX
The OVER is 10-3 in the last 13 meetings in Boston.

Toronto Blue Jays at New York Yankees (7:05 PM ET)

After losing eight of its last 10 games in June, New York has won eight of 12 in July to move over .500 for the first time since it was 36-35 on June 22nd. EDGE: YANKEES
The Blue Jays have played 14 of their last 17 games on the road, going 6-8 without a pair of back-to-back victories in that stretch. SLIGHT EDGE: YANKEES
Toronto has won its last four games with starter Josh Towers on the mound. He’s 2-0 with a 4.63 ERA in that stretch, which includes his best start of the year. EDGE: BLUE JAYS
In three starts since his return to New York, starter Kei Igawa is 0-1 with a 6.19 ERA. The left-hander hasn’t tallied a victory since April 28. EDGE: BLUE JAYS
The Blue Jays are 5-1 in the last six meetings.

Chicago White Sox at Cleveland Indians (7:05 PM ET)

The White Sox have lost seven of eight series with the Indians since the start of last season, including an 0-3-1 mark at Jacobs Field. EDGE: WHITE SOX
Cleveland has won all 11 home series against AL foes, compiling a major-league best 33-13 home record. BIG EDGE: INDIANS
Chicago’s John Danks will make his first start since July 5th. He’s unbeaten in his last five starts and the White Sox have won the last three. EDGE: WHITE SOX
Indians starter Cliff lee is facing the White Sox for the first time this season, after beating them twice in September, surrendering two runs in 13 innings. He was 2-4 with a 7.04 ERA in his previous 12 starts versus Chicago. SLIGHT EDGE: WHITE SOX
The UNDER is 4-1 in the last five meetings in Cleveland.

San Francisco Giants at Chicago Cubs (ESPN | 7:05 PM ET)

The Cubs have won 15 of 19 overall and are 3.5 games behind NL Central-leading Milwaukee after trailing by 8.5 games on June 23rd. EDGE: CUBS
San Francisco’s Barry Bonds is hitless in a season-worst 20 consecutive at-bats after an 0-for-5 showing in Monday’s 5-3 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers. EDGE: UNDER
Cubs starter Rich Hill opened the season 4-1 with a 1.73 ERA in his first six starts, but is just 1-5 with a 5.20 ERA in his last 11 outings. EDGE: GIANTS
Giants right-hander Tim Lincecum has allowed just three runs in 20 innings in his last three starts after allowing 22 runs in 18 2/3 innings in his previous four. EDGE: GIANTS
The UNDER is 6-1-2 in the last nine meetings in Chicago.

Texas Rangers at Oakland Athletics (10:05 PM ET)

Oakland is 376-221 after the All-Star game since 1999 and has reached the postseason five times over that span. However, the A’s were swept in four games by Minnesota to open up the second half of the season. SLIGHT EDGE: A’S
A slumping offense has been one of the biggest reasons for Oakland’s slide. The A’s matched a team record set in September 1978 by failing to score more than three runs in their tenth straight game Monday. BIG EDGE: UNDER
Texas starter Jamey Wright hasn’t received a decision in two career starts against Oakland despite allowing 16 runs in 12 innings. EDGE: OVER
The Rangers will square off against Athletics starter Dallas Braden. He made four starts earlier this year and was 1-3 with a 6.41 ERA. EDGE: RANGERS
The UNDER is 4-0-1 in the last five meetings.

Philadelphia Phillies at Los Angeles Dodgers (10:10 PM ET)

Los Angeles starter Brad Penny was 10-2 with a 2.91 ERA during the first-half of the season, but he’ll try to avoid repeating his second-half of 2006. He was 6-7 with a 6.25 ERA in 15 outings after the break last season. SLIGHT EDGE: DODGERS
Penny is 4-0 with a 2.13 ERA in 10 starts at home this year. He’s 7-4 with a 3.47 ERA in 18 career starts against the Phillies, including a 2-0 mark and 0.69 ERA in two outings last year. EDGE: DODGERS
Philadelphia’s Jamie Moyer hasn’t faced Los Angeles in more than seven years. He’s 3-4 with a 4.07 ERA in 10 career starts against the Dodgers. SLIGHT EDGE: PHILLIES
Moyer fell to 0-2 with a 6.11 ERA in his last three starts after giving up five runs over 5 2/3 innings in a 6-3 loss at Colorado on July 7th. EDGE: DODGERS
The OVER is 4-0 in the last four meetings

            Dunkel Index

            Toronto at NY Yankees
After a shaky start to the season, Josh Towers has pitched the Blue Jays to wins in each of his last three starts and is coming off his best outing of the season (3 hits, 0 runs over 8 innings) against the Indians. New York's Kei Igawa has enjoyed no such turnaround and is 0-2 with a 9.71 ERA in his last five starts. The Blue Jays look like a good underdog pick (+140) according to Dunkel, which has Toronto favored straight up by 1. Dunkel Pick: Toronto (+140). Here are all of today's games.

                  Streaking Pitchers

                  Monday, July 16

                  Hot

David Wells (San Diego Padres) - How well does Boomer pitch when he's angry? Today bettors will find out with Wells pitching while appealing his seven-game suspension for arguing with umpire Ed Hickox on July 7. Wells is undefeated in three starts for the Padres, who are -109 home favorites tonight against the New York Mets. The big lefty has a stellar 2.30 ERA over that span while allowing only one dinger.

Tim Lincecum (San Francisco Giants) - The golden armed blue-chip prospect has been phenomenal since June 20, sporting a 2-0 record with a sparkling 1.35 ERA. Throw in 25 strikeouts over his last 20 innings pitched and you can see why there's a ton of value in the Giants with Lincecum on the hill tonight. Lincecum's .260 OBP against and 1.00 WHIP over his last three outings also bolster the case for the +127 underdog Giants at Wrigley Field tonight.

                  Cold

Micah Owings (Arizona Diamondbacks) - The way Owings has been pitching lately, Diamondbacks backers must feel as though they're owed some serious cash. The right-hander is 0-3 in his last three starts with a horrid 8.59 ERA and .408 OBP against since June 26. With Arizona as a +137 underdog tonight against the Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park, you would have to be reckless to bank on Owings and the Diamondbacks.

Jamie Moyer (Philadelphia Phillies) - The crafty left-hander has not been his dependable self lately for Phillies bettors. Moyer is 0-2 in his last three trips to the bump with a 6.11 ERA for the Phillies, +131 underdogs tonight against Los Angeles at Dodger Stadium. Fueling Moyer's recent struggles are control problems - he has surrendered eight walks in his last 17 innings of work.

                    Hot Lines

                    Monday, July 16

Chicago White Sox at Cleveland Indians (-174, 10)

It’s a joyous time in the heart of Ohio. The Cleveland Indians re-signed designated hitter Travis Hafner and manager Eric Wedge is expected to get a contract extension any day now. The Indians are in a good position to stay competitive for years to come with a solid nucleus of Hafner, Grady Sizemore and Victor Martinez all locked up until at least 2009.

The longterm plan isn’t as crystal clear for the Chicago White Sox. GM Kenny Williams re-signed lefty Mark Buehrle but his club hasn’t responded the way he was hoping. Williams said after Buehrle's deal that the White Sox would be buyers at the trade deadline, but that’s looking more and more unlikely.

Chicago hasn’t fared well against the Indians (2-4) or left-handed starters (9-18).

                    Pick: Cleveland –174

Philadelphia Phillies at Los Angeles Dodgers (-139, 8)

The Phillies starting rotation is a bit of a mess but the bullpen will get a boost with the return of Tom Gordon. Manager Charlie Manuel told reporters he plans on easing Gordon back slowly.

“We need to give him some work in a game before we give him a big moment in the back of the bullpen,” Manuel said, according to the Philadelphia Daily News.

One thing Philly backers can rely on is the offense. Philadelphia has scored 25 runs in three games after the All-Star break.

A hot Pat Burrell has been a big boost to the lineup. He’s batting .312 with 10 RBIs so far this month.

                    Pick: Philadelphia +131

San Francisco Giants at Chicago Cubs (-132, N/A)

No one in the Dodgers locker room was happy about being swept at home by the Dodgers, particularly Barry Bonds.

“Yeah, it’s an embarrassment for me to be wearing this (expletive) uniform because of the way I’m playing,” Bonds said following Sunday’s 5-3 loss.

It was a miserable weekend for the seven-time MVP. He was 0-for-12 in the weekend series and he has just one hit in his last 24 at-bats.

“We couldn’t have had a worse start than what we had and we know it,” Giants manager Bruce Bochy told San Francisco Chronicle. “To get swept here at home … we’re better than this. There’s no way that should happen.

“At this point, we keep fighting and, hopefully, you get ticked off and do something about it.”

                    Pick: San Francisco +124
