-- Bobby Abreu, Yankees, homered and drove in a season-high five runs to lead the New York Yankees over Tampa Bay 6-4.

      SLUMPING A'S

Oakland has lost a season-high six straight and fell a season-worst three games under .500 following a 4-3 loss to Minnesota on Saturday. For the first time since Sept. 10-17, 1978, the Athletics have scored three runs or less in nine straight games. The A's are hitting .155 during the six-game skid.

      PAPI POWER

David Ortiz hit his first home run at Fenway Park since April 21, a span of 129 at-bats over 34 games, in Boston's 9-4 victory over Toronto on Saturday. Just four of the slugger's 15 homers this season have come at home. Ortiz hit 22 of his franchise-record 54 homers at Fenway last season.

      ABREU HOT

Bobby Abreu homered and drove in five runs in the New York Yankees' 6-4 win over Tampa Bay on Saturday. Abreu has two homers, two doubles and eight RBIs in three games since the All-Star break. He's batting .377 with six homers and 40 RBIs in the Yankees' 44 wins, as opposed to .158 with one homer and nine RBIs in the team's 44 losses.

      MARINERS RECORD

All-Star J.J. Putz got the final four outs -- striking out the side in the ninth -- for his 26th save in Seattle's 6-4 win over Detroit on Saturday. He hasn't blown one in 28 chances dating to Sept. 30, 2006, a Mariners record.

      DUELS

Matt Belisle gave up one run, stranding eight Mets in seven innings, but was outdone by Tom Glavine, who gave up one run on two hits in eight innings to pick up his 298th career win and help the New York Mets top Cincinnati 2-1 on Saturday. ... Rodrigo Lopez allowed one run on one hit in seven innings and had a no-hitter going with two outs in the sixth inning but received a no-decision in Colorado's 2-1 10-inning loss to Milwaukee. Brewers starter Ben Sheets gave up one run on two hits before leaving the game with a sprained finger in the fourth. Rookie Yoveni Gallardo pitched 4 2-3 scoreless innings of relief and two Brewers relievers did not surrender a hit.

      SPEAKING

"I'm not going to lie to you. If I didn't come out of that with a win, it would have had psychological repercussions." -- Mets left-hander Tom Glavine, on pitching eight innings of two-hit ball to win his 298th career game on Saturday. New York broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the eighth inning and Billy Wagner pitched a perfect ninth to preserve a 2-1 win over Cincinnati.

      SEASONS

1901 -- Christy Mathewson of the New York Giants pitched his first of two career no-hitters, beating the St. Louis Cardinals 5-0.

1969 -- Cincinnati's Lee May hit four home runs in a doubleheader split with the Atlanta Braves. May had two home runs and drove in five runs in both games as the Reds lost the opener 9-8 but came back to win the second game 10-4.

1980 -- Johnny Bench broke Yogi Berra's record for home runs by a catcher as the Cincinnati Reds beat the Montreal Expos 12-7. Bench hit his 314th homer as a catcher off David Palmer. Bench had 33 home runs while playing other positions.

1997 -- The San Francisco Giants scored 13 runs to set a modern NL record for runs in a seventh inning en route to a 16-2 rout of the San Diego Padres. The Giants set the NL record for the most runs in a seventh inning since 1900.

2006 -- For the first time in nearly three decades, a full day of major league baseball was played without a save recorded. There were six blown saves during 15 games, including two each in Pittsburgh's 7-6 victory over Washington, and in Cincinnati's 3-2 win against Colorado. The Nationals and Reds both won with ninth-inning rallies.

        Sunday Night Baseball
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Game: St. Louis Cardinals at Philadelphia Phillies

        Line: Phillies -123, 10

        Tale of two Adams

Sunday Night Baseball hosts the battle of “Adams” when Adam Wainwright and Adam Eaton face off in the final game of the Cards and Phils three-game set.

Wainwright’s 7-7 record looks about right for a pitcher that’s alternated wins and losses over his last six starts. The 6-foot-7 right-hander has the tall task of avoiding the series sweep for St. Louis, after the club dropped the past two contests. Wainwright was solid against Philadelphia on June 23 when he threw six innings, giving up two runs on seven hits. He has a 4.66 ERA this season over his 17 starts for the Cardinals.

The other Adam is trying to finish of the series sweep and avoid the Phillies' 10,000 loss. Adam Eaton has put in solid efforts for his club this year but doesn’t have the record to show for it. He has pitched into the sixth inning in each of his last seven starts, going 3-1 with a 4.85 ERA during this stretch. He is 8-5 on the season while the club is 10-8 during his 18 starts this year.

In Eaton’s most recent appearance against St. Louis he threw just over five innings while allowing six runs on eight hits, including two home runs. Eaton has served up 17 dingers this season, tied for fifth most in the National League.

        Phat Albert

Everyone, including Albert Pujols, knocked Tony La Russa’s decision to bench the Cardinals MVP first baseman during the All-Star Game. However, it seems the veteran skipper knew just what he was doing.

Outside of some hurt feelings and reactionary comments the bold move has lit a fire under Pujols, who has homered in each of the two games since the break. He made a big statement on Friday, rocking his then 17th home run of the year over 470 feet.

"It felt good," Pujols told MLB.com. "Finally, I was just able to hit the ball hard. I had been struggling at the plate. It felt good off the bat, and I knew it was out. If I keep taking good swings like that, everything will work out."

Before Friday’s round-tripper, Pujols hadn’t hit a home run 22 games going back to June 15. Pujols tallied No. 18 during Saturday’s 10-4 loss, bringing his season RBI total up to 54.

        Phils thrill total bettors

The All-Star break did wonders for the Phillies’ bats. Recharged from a couple days of rest, Philadelphia has exploded to start the second half of the season and has outscored the Cardinals 23-7 in the first two games of the series.

"There's an old saying, 'You've got to win the best way you can,'" manager Charlie Manuel told the Philadelphia Inquirer. "If you score runs, that's how you've got to learn to win, I guess."

The potent offense is batting .468 during this series and has connected for 37 hits heading into Sunday’s game. The hot bats of Jimmy Rollins, Aaron Rowand, Chase Utley and Ryan Howard have made the Phillies one of the best over bets in the bigs.

Philadelphia has a 52-35-2 over/under record this season. It’s average of around 10 scores per game is partly due to its efficient offense but also sub-par pitching. The Phillies are among the worst teams in overall ERA and WHIP. This combo has led seven of the last 10 Phillies games to play over the total.

        Thunderstruck

This weekend’s 6:05 p.m. ET broadcast of Sunday Night Baseball has the Cardinals and Phillies playing two hours earlier than normally scheduled because ESPN is broadcasting the ESPY Awards at 9 p.m. ET.

The bump in the schedule could help avoid impending thundershowers heading toward Philadelphia. The forecast for tonight’s game is calling for isolated thunderstorms with a 30 percent chance of precipitation. Game time temperature could get as high as 92 degrees.

Currently the wind is blowing at 14 miles per hour to straight out center field at Citizens Bank Park.
