    Six-pack for Saturday

-- Matt Holliday's first game after Home Run Derby: four strikeouts and a home run. Uh-oh.

-- A's minor league system is getting thin; four of the nine guys who started at AAA Sacramento Friday are catchers or converted catchers. More slow guys. Terrific.

-- Arizona RF Jeff Salazar made a great catch Friday night, robbing Giles of a home run by bringing ball back in from over the rightfield fence. Tremendous play.

-- San Francisco couldn't get Russell Martin out Friday, in 9-1 Dodger win. Martin was on base five times in five tries.

-- Giant rookie Fred Lewis is an impressive prospect; so far this season, he is 4-for-4 as a pinch-hitter.

-- Barry Bonds kills the Giants in leftfield; he has zero range so unless a ball is hit right at him, it drops in. Announcers on Giant games are choosing to ignore it, at least on the air.

Saturday's List of 13: College football knowledge..........

It won't be long before Saturday afternoons will be filled with tailgating, marching bands and pigskin, so here is some info to get you ready for the season..............

      13) If you're planning ahead,. the first bowl game is out in San Diego on December 20 (opposite an NFL Network game with Rams and Steelers), 9pm on ESPN. The Poinsettia Bowl.

      12) Nothing is a kick in teeth to a football program like when a coach leaves his job for team in the same league. Tulsa's new coach, Todd Graham, left Rice after only one year, for league rival Tulsa. Rice now has third coach in last three seasons, and also has stigma of being a bad job.

      11) Tom O'Brien left Boston College for NC State, also in the same league; O'Brien's Wolfpack goes back to Chestnut Hill on September 8. Wolfpack's commitment to sports is greater than BC's, and by a lot, so this wasn't as difficult a decision for O'Brien, who had worked wonders with the Eagles.

      10) Vince Dooley's son Derek is now head coach at Louisiana Tech. Always coaching Bulldogs, those Dooleys.

      9) No transfer is under the pressure that Nebraska QB Keller is under, after transferring from Arizona State with only a year of eligibility left. That whole mess wound up costing Arizona State coach Koetter his job (he is now offensive coordinator for the Dolphins) and might cost Bill Callahan his, if Keller is not the player he was in Tempe two years ago.

      8) It is inexcusable for Michigan to be playing Appalachian State in its first game; you're telling me a team that draws full house of 105,000+ every game couldnt pay MAC or Sun Belt team to show up? Baloney. If I voted in the polls, any game against a I-AA foe wound count as a loss in my book.

      7) Here is how to make a schedule; it might not be the #1 way to win a national title, but UCLA's first six games, with not a single bye in between, are: @ Stanford, home against BYU, @ Utah, home vs Washington, at Oregon State, home vs Notre Dame. Now that is a fair test of a team's ability.

      6) Minnesota is switching from ground game to the spread, and triggerman might be son of the new coach, freshman QB Brewster. Likewise, Cody Hawkins might be under center out in Boulder for Colorado. Young Brewster was considered to be a blue-chip recruit, but lot of pressure for a kid to bear.

      5) Dennis Erickson has now been head coach at three of ten schools in Pac-10. He also has worked at Wyoming, twice at Idaho, the Seahawks and 49ers in NFL, in addition to Oregon State, Washington State and now Arizona State, so his wife has to be an expert packer by now, she's had the practice.

      4) Baylor QB Michael Machen will be 26 on October 5, so he is older than many QBs in NFL. Too bad Baylor couldn't ask for a two-year transfer to Big 12 North- they could win some to revitalize their program. Big 12 South is extremely difficult.

      3) Arkansas' Darren McFadden and Herschel Walker are only SEC running backs to rush for 1,000+ yards in both freshman and sophomore years, thats how good McFadden has been.

      2) Only four Heisman Trophy runner-ups won the next year, though, so that piece of history works against McFadden.

      1) The national title game is 18 days after the Poinsettia Bowl, and it is in New Orleans this time. 8pm on FOX. Seems like a long time from now, but time flies when you're having fun.

Montreal (0-2) @ Hamilton (0-2) -- Huge game for Als, after Cats got smoked in first two games, 37-9 in Calgary, 30-5 at home by Toronto. Montreal ran for only 42 yards at Winnipeg last week, after Edmonton had run ball for 166 (8.3 yds/carry) against the Bombers in the opener. QB controversy in Hamilton, as Maas is shaky, but Chang won't be answer either. Alouette QBs have been sacked 15 times in two games, which is terrible protection.

                            Streaking Pitchers

                            Saturday, July 14

                            Hot Pitchers

Kenny Rogers (Detroit Tigers) - Kenny Rogers hasn’t missed a beat since coming off the DL. The left-hander is 3-0 with a spectacular 1.04 ERA and 0.98 WHIP in his three starts this season, including a six-inning shutout performance in his only road start. Rogers is 0-2 in his last two starts at Seattle's Safeco Field but has a solid 3.29 ERA in those games, and the Tigers are 4-0 in his last four starts outside Comerica Park.

Ted Lilly (Chicago Cubs) - Ted Lilly is one of the main reasons for the Chicago Cubs’ recent success. The left-hander is 4-0 with a 3.06 ERA in his last five starts and is 8-4 with a 3.67 ERA and 1.09 WHIP this season. The Cubs are 4-1 in Lilly’s last five home starts as a favorite. The veteran goes against the Houston Astros as a -113 favorite at Wrigley Field.

                            Cold Pitchers

Carlos Silva (Minnesota Twins) - Carlos Silva is struggling this season and stumbled into the All-Star break. The right-hander went 1-2 with a lofty 7.80 ERA in his last three outings and is 6-10 with a 4.58 ERA and 1.40 WHIP overall this season. The Twins are 4-9 in Silva’s last 13 starts and are 1-4 in Silva’s last five starts against teams with losing records. Minnesota is a –111 favorite against the Oakland Athletics at the Metrodome.

Daniel Cabrera (Baltimore Orioles) - Cabrera shares the AL lead in losses with Carlos Silva, Jose Contreras and Ervin Santana and can take sole possession of this dubious statistic with a loss tonight against the Chicago White Sox. The right-hander is 6-10 with a 5.04 ERA and 1.43 WHIP and is 4-4 at Oriole Park with a 5.77 ERA. Cabrera has lost four of his last six starts and the Orioles are 1-4 in Cabrera’s last five starts as a favorite. Baltimore is a -106 home favorite for tonight's game.

                              Dunkel

                              Washington at Florida
Yesterday the usually anemic Washington offense lit up Dontrelle Willis and the Florida bullpen for 14 runs and 17 hits. Even a fraction of that production should go a long way in support of today's starter, Matt Chico, who has allowed just one run over his last three outings and thrown 13 consecutive scoreless innings. The Nats look like a good underdog pick (+175) in this one according to Dunkel, which has Washington favored straight up by 1 1/2. Dunkel Pick: Washington (+175). Here are all of today's games.
