    Six-pack for Friday

Some NFL preseason trends to ponder this summer......

-- Redskins are 1-14 against spread as preseason underdog of more than three points.

-- Most teams try hardest in the third preseason game; San Diego has covered that game ten of last twelve years.

-- 49ers are 0-7 as preseason favorite of more than 4 points.

-- Carolina covered 16 of last 25 as preseason underdog.

-- Houston Texans are 2-7 vs spread as preseason dog of more than three points.

-- Denver Broncos covered their final preseason game last seven years in a row.

Friday's List of 13: Random thoughts for a Friday...........

      13) Strange doings with Mets, who haven't named permanent hitting coach in wake of Rick Down's firing (via phone) at the All-Star break. Very classy, firing a guy over the phone. But Howard Johnson was hitting coach Thursday, and first two Met batters homered, before offensive funk returned-- in rest of game, Mets only scored one more run in 3-2 win.

      12) While Las Vegas is America's favorite city, Thursday was perfect day for weather here in Albany, New York, America's second-favorite city. Upper 70's, no wind, low humidity, so it made perfect sense to head out for minor league baseball on Thursday night, and we were lucky to catch a doubleheader.

      11) Minor league baseball is the only place you aren't really surprised to see a man dancing on a dugout while dressed as a bottle of mustard. Or Uncle Sam on stilts. Or a guy dressed as a chicken, riding a motorcycle. The minor leagues are cool.

      10) Unfortunately, the Tri-City ValleyCats, a local team, Class A affiliate of the Astros, are pitching-poor this summer; their starter in Game 1 gave up a dozen hits in four IP against the Mets' affiliate. One of the Brooklyn Cyclones hit a home run that cleared two fences on the field, then a hill beyond the fances, then another fence that surrounded tennis courts on the hill. A titanic blast. Tape-measure. Cannonading. Huge.

For $6, you can't get a better evening's entertainment, unless ARod makes you his wingman for a night.

      9) World Series of Poker is getting close to point where the remaining players will all get paid. 621 out of 6,358 will cash, with minimum payout of $20,320. So if you do finish in money the worst you can do is double the $10,000 buy-in. Not bad.

      8) Mariners are 15-4 since June 20, best record in baseball; in their 3-2 win Thursday, Pudge Rodriguez got tossed in fourth inning for claiming interference on a steal attempt. Argument got heated-- contact was made; Pudge might get suspended.

      7) White Sox had 9-3 lead in ninth inning Thursday and put Dewon Day in to mop up the win; six pitches and four batters later, Day came out, and Bobby Jenks had to save 9-7 win for the Pale Hose. Mr Day's ERA went up to 10.61.

      6) Potential ugliness in Muncie, Indiana, where hoop coach Ronny Thompson has resigned after one year as coach of the Ball State Cardinals. Not only did he lose 22 games in his only season, his staff twice got caught observing illegal practices, and they lied about it the second time. Bad times in Muncie. Adding to ugliness were racist notes left under door of head coach's office last month.

      5) July is not the time to be changing coaches, since it is one of two prime recruiting seasons, but when Thompson went on vacation during first big recruiting weekend this month, it figured that his time in Muncie was up. Will be interesting to see who they fill this job with, but Thompson has very good recruiting class coming in-- what will those kids do?

      4) Darko Milicic got $21M for three years from the Grizzlies, who obviously were undaunted by Darko's almost iinvisible resume in four NBA seasons. Milicic averaged 12 ppg during series vs Pistons this spring, but Jerome James once had big playoff series, and parlayed it into a ridiculous contract from the Knicks. Memphis has to hope this isn't same scenario.

      3) One thing in Grizzlies' favor is that Marc Iavaroni is coach in Memphis now, just in from Phoenix, so he'll play wide-open style that meshes better with Darko's skills. Plus, Iavaroni is an excellent big man coach, so if Darko has it inside him to be a solid NBA player, we'll see it fairly soon.

      2) Carlos Delgado is hitting 18-90 (.200) with men in scoring position; must have been the hitting coach's fault. Couldn't possibly be that Carlos is having a bad year, or that he is an aging player whose skills are declining. Blame someone else.

      1) There are problems with the Mets; first place teams do not fire coaches. Nice of Rickey Henderson to show eagerness to become a big league coach by not getting into town for the Thursday game; he'll likely be at Shea Friday, if he feels like it. You wonder if they're just placating a player(s) by firing the hitting coach. It couldn't have all been his fault, though. I'd expect to see some big improvement soon, or else we'll know that it wasn't the scapegoat's fault. It rarely is.

        Weekend Sports Preview

Sports fans and bettors have another busy sports weekend on their hands with baseball back from the All-Star break, the AFL and CFL both tearing up the gridiron, the WNBA tipping off with their All-Star game, and NASCAR taking to the track at Chicagoland.

The teams that will play in Arena Bowl XXI will be decided on Saturday as the Conference championships kick off. In the National Conference Championship, the Georgia Force travel to Columbus to face the Destroyers. In the American Conference Championship, the San Jose SaberCats play host to the Chicago Rush. The winners of both contests will meet in Arena Bowl XXI at the New Orleans Arena on July 29.

On the diamond this weekend, the battle for division titles and Wild Card spots in both leagues heats up with the stretch drive imminent. In the American League, Toronto visits Boston in an important AL East battle, while Oakland takes on Minnesota with both teams in need of wins to get back in the playoff chase in their divisions. The rest of the AL schedule includes the White Sox at Baltimore, Kansas City at Cleveland, the Yankees at Tampa Bay, Detroit at Seattle and Texas at the Angels.

In the National League, the Cubs try to continue their run up the AL Central standings when Houston visits Wrigley Field, St. Louis tries to get the second half started off right when they travel to Philadelphia, and San Diego heads to Arizona in a pivotal NL West series. Also on tap in the NL is Washington at Florida, Cincinnati at the Mets, Pittsburgh at Atlanta, Colorado at Milwaukee and the Dodgers at San Francisco.

Returning to the gridiron, the CFL kicks off Week 3 with a pair of games on Friday night. This week’s Friday night doubleheader includes Edmonton at Winnipeg and BC at Saskatchewan. The lone Saturday game on this weekend’s schedule is Montreal at Hamilton.

The WNBA is on the break this weekend, as the league’s best gather in Washington for the All-Star break. The actual All-Star game tips off on Sunday afternoon at the Verizon Center.

The Nextel Cup Series rolls into Chicagoland Speedway this Sunday for the USG Sheetrock 400. Jeff Gordon won this race last season, and he and Tony Stewart are the co-favorites this year at 5/1.

                  Tips and Trends
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago White Sox at Baltimore Orioles (7:05 PM ET)

Chicago’s Mark Buehrle is 4-1 with a 2.28 ERA in 10 career appearances against Baltimore. He allowed two earned runs and nine hits over 7 2/3 innings in his last start versus the Orioles on July 2, a 7-6 loss at Camden Yards. EDGE: WHITE SOX
Buehrle is a fantastic 22-10 during June in his career, but he falls off to just 14-13 with a 4.28 ERA in 37 July starts. SLIGHT EDGE: ORIOLES
Orioles left-hander Erik Bedard is an even 2-2 with a 4.70 ERA in six career starts against the White Sox. He was knocked around for six runs and five hits over 5 2/3 innings in his last start versus Chicago on July 2. EDGE: OVER
Baltimore has won four straight games with Bedard on the hill, including his most impressive start last time out. He tossed a complete game shutout and struck out a season-high 15 batters against Texas. EDGE: ORIOLES
The UNDER is 6-1-1 in Buehrle’s last eight starts overall.

Toronto Blue Jays at Boston Red Sox (7:05 PM ET)

Toronto starter Shaun Marcum will make his sixth career appearance and just his second start against Boston tonight, as the right-hander has allowed just three runs and nine hits in 15 innings against them. SLIGHT EDGE: BLUE JAYS
Marcum has posted a 3-1 record and 2.79 ERA in 11 away outings this season. He could easily be a perfect 5-0 on the road, but his offense has scored just two runs in his last two starts away from the Rogers Centre. EDGE: BLUE JAYS & UNDER
Red Sox right-hander Julian Tavarez was reached for six runs and seven hits in his last start versus the Blue Jays and has a 2-3 record with a 4.57 ERA in 21 career outings against them. SLIGHT EDGE: BLUE JAYS
Tavarez has pitched extremely well in his last three starts at Fenway Park, allowing four earned runs over his last 19 2/3 innings at home. EDGE: RED SOX
The OVER is 4-1 in Tavarez’s last five starts overall.

New York Yankees at Tampa Bay Devil Rays (7:10 PM ET)

New York right-hander Roger Clemens has found his groove in July, combining to throw 16 innings and allowing just two earned runs this month in two home starts against the Los Angeles Angels and Minnesota Twins. EDGE: YANKEES & UNDER
Clemens has enjoyed little success on the road, posting an 0-2 record and 7.15 ERA in three outings. SLIGHT EDGE: D-RAYS & OVER
Tampa Bay’s Scott Kazmir has a solid 3.69 ERA in seven career appearances against New York, but has a disappointing 1-3 record. The hard-throwing left-hander allowed just a single earned run and five hits over 6 2/3 innings in his last start versus the Yankees. SLIGHT EDGE: UNDER
Kazmir has picked up three consecutive losses, after the Devil Rays had won his previous four starts. He’s battled his control throughout the season and has walked at least three batters in five straight outings. EDGE: YANKEES
The Devil Rays are 2-8 in Kazmir’s last 10 starts versus the American League East.

Oakland Athletics at Minnesota Twins (8:10 PM ET)

Oakland left-hander Joe Kennedy is an unimpressive 2-4 with a 6.88 ERA in eight career appearances against Minnesota, but threw eight innings of one-run ball against them on June 1. SLIGHT EDGE: A’S
The Athletics are just 4-14 in Kennedy’s 18 appearances this season. They have lost six consecutive games when he’s appeared as a reliever or starter. EDGE: TWINS
Minnesota has won five straight games with ace Johan Santana on the mound, as the dominating left-hander has limited opponents to two earned runs or less in all five starts. EDGE: TWINS & UNDER
Santana has a losing 3-4 record and 3.91 ERA in eight home starts this season, which is considerably off from his perfect 12-0 record and 2.19 ERA at the Metrodome in 2006. SLIGHT EDGE: A’S
The Twins are 41-10 in Santana’s last 51 home starts.

San Diego Padres at Arizona Diamondbacks (9:40 PM ET)

San Diego starter Greg Maddux is a miserable 1-9 with a 5.12 ERA in 15 career starts against Arizona. The right-hander has allowed 110 hits in just 89 2/3 innings versus the Diamondbacks in his career. BIG EDGE: D-BACKS
Maddux may be showing signs of slowing down, as he’s lost both July starts this season and posted an 8.74 ERA. EDGE: D-BACKS & OVER
Diamondbacks starter Doug Davis is 3-2 with a 3.61 ERA in eight career appearances against the Padres. He’s walked 14 batters and struck out 36 in 47 1/3 innings. SLIGHT EDGE: D-BACKS
Davis has lost his last two starts, mainly because he’s walked 11 batters over 12 2/3 innings of work. EDGE: PADRES
The Diamondbacks are 1-4 in Davis’ last five starts versus the NL West.

Detroit Tigers at Seattle Mariners (10:05 PM ET)

Detroit’s Jeremy Bonderman is 3-2 with a 3.99 ERA in six career starts against Seattle. He tallied a 9-7 home victory against the Mariners on May 8, even though he allowed five earned runs and seven hits over six innings. SLIGHT EDGE: TIGERS
Bonderman hopes to keep his July momentum going at Safeco Field, as the right-hander has given up just two runs in 16 innings this month. EDGE: TIGERS & UNDER
Seattle starter Jarrod Washburn is looking to win his fourth consecutive start, as the Mariners have outscored opponents 18-4 over that span. BIG EDGE: MARINERS
Washburn has a spectacular 7-2 record and 2.59 ERA in 12 nighttime starts in 2007. He’s allowed just six long balls in 80 innings under the lights. EDGE: MARINERS
The Mariners are 4-0 in their last four games as a home underdog.

Los Angeles Dodgers at San Francisco Giants (10:15 PM ET)

Los Angeles starter Derek Lowe has a 3-5 record and 3.60 ERA in nine career starts against San Francisco. He allowed three earned runs and nine hits in seven innings of work in a 5-3 loss on April 24. SLIGHT EDGE: GIANTS
Lowe is 7-5 with a 2.70 ERA in 14 nighttime starts compared to 1-3 with a 4.28 ERA in five daytime outings. EDGE: DODGERS
Giants right-hander Matt Cain has failed miserably in three career starts against the Dodgers, allowing 13 earned runs and 25 hits in 13 2/3 innings. EDGE: DODGERS
Cain is looking to win his first night game of the year, posting a 0-6 record and 4.48 ERA in 11 starts. EDGE: DODGERS
The Dodgers are 2-9 in their last 11 games as a road underdog.

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                    Friday's baseball betting notes

                    No hard feelings

St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols and manager Tony La Russa have apparently gotten over their difference over the All-Star Game. Pujols, who was appointed to the All-Star team by La Russa, was the only National League player who didn’t play.

The St. Louis Cardinals first baseman said afterwards that if he knew he wasn’t going to play he wouldn’t have bothered making the trip to San Francisco. La Russa was criticized for failing to send Pujols to the plate in the bottom of the ninth with the bases loaded.

“Of course I was disappointed I didn’t get in the game, but it’s not a big deal,” Pujols told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. “People are making a big deal about it, saying I don’t respect Tony or that he disrespected me. Are you kidding?”

The Cards are +139 underdogs against the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday.

                    Hitting problems in the desert

The Arizona Diamondbacks have fired hitting coach Barry Seitzer and replaced him with Rick Schu in an attempt to ignite a lackluster offense.

Arizona ranks close to the bottom in the National League in many key offensive categories, including batting average (15th) and runs (12th).

“Without picking on individuals, we can do better than this,” D-Backs outfielder Eric Byrnes told the East Valley Tribune.

The Diamondbacks host the San Diego Padres on Friday and are listed as –107 favorites with the total set at 9 ½.

                    Tex fed up with losing

Mark Teixeira is expected to return to the Texas Rangers lineup on Friday but he made some headlines for other reasons. The first baseman is not pleased with the direction of the club and didn’t pull any punches when he spoke with the press.

“We’re a big-market team that’s playing like a small-market team,” Teixeira told the Dallas Morning News. “Unless you hit with some young players and pitchers, it’s tough to play that way.”

Teixeira hasn’t played since June 9 because of a strained quadriceps muscle. He is an unrestricted free agent after this season and there are rumors he will be moved before the July 31st trading deadline.

“No player is going to sign up with a team knowing they are going to lose,” the former All-Star said. “When a player has the chance, they’re going to go with a winner.”

Teixeira is batting .302 with 12 homers and 41 RBIs this season. Texas is 16-11 without the slugger.

The Rangers visit the Los Angeles Angels tomorrow and are +181 underdogs with the total set at 8 ½.

                        Dunkel Index

                        Pittsburgh at Atlanta
While a 40-48 mark at the All-Star break may not seem like much, it's a big improvement for the Pirates, who were 30-60 at the same point last season. Pittsburgh won nine of 13 heading into the break thanks in large part to solid starting pitching. One of the Bucs' best, Ian Snell, will get the start today and is coming off a strong performance against Milwaukee in which he gave up just three runs in eight innings of work. Over his last five starts Snell has a 2.92 ERA and has led Pittsburgh to a 4-1 record over that span. His counterpart, Tim Hudson, is just 3-4 in his last 10 starts with a 5.63 ERA. Hudson gave up six runs on 10 hits in just three innings in his last start against the Dodgers. The Pirates look like a decent underdog pick (+170) in this one according to Dunkel, which has Pittsburgh favored straight up by 1/2 a run. Dunkel Pick: Pittsburgh (+170). Here are all of today's games.

                            Friday's streaking starting pitchers

                            Hot Pitchers

Johan Santana (Minnesota Twins) - Santana has been sizzling since going 6-6 through his first 14 starts of the season. The veteran left-hander is 4-0 over his last four starts with a spectacular 1.29 ERA and is 10-6 with a respectable 2.75 ERA and 1.03 WHIP overall. Minnesota is 41-10 in Santana’s last 51 starts at home and is 4-1 in his last five starts with eight or more days of rest. The Twins host the Athletics tonight at the Metrodome.

Jeremy Bonderman (Detroit Tigers) - It was an impressive first half for Bonderman. The Tigers right-hander went 9-1 with a 3.48 ERA and 1.19 WHIP and leads the Tigers with 98 strikeouts. Bonderman is 3-2 with a 3.99 ERA against the Seattle Mariners and is 4-0 with a 3.80 ERA outside Comerica Park. The Tigers are 10-1 in Bonderman’s last 11 starts as a favorite and are listed as –110 road favorites against the Mariners.

                            Cold Pitchers

Kip Wells (St. Louis Cardinals) - Wells hasn’t done much to help the Cardinals in their pursuit to repeat as World Series champions. The right-hander is 3-11 with a lofty 5.92 ERA and 1.54 WHIP. He is tied for most losses in the majors and is 1-7 with a 7.25 ERA outside Busch Stadium. The Cardinals are 0-7 in Wells’ last seven road starts and are 0-5 in Wells’ last five starts as a road underdog. St. Louis is a +139 road underdog tonight against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Jason Jennings (Houston Astros) - Jennings is approaching a career milestone he would prefer to circumvent. The veteran starter is in danger of losing his fourth consecutive start for the first time in his career tonight against the Chicago Cubs. The right-hander is 1-4 with a 4.07 ERA and 1.34 WHIP. He is also 0-3 with a 4.95 ERA and 1.40 WHIP over his last three starts. The Astros are 0-5 in Jennings’ last five starts against the NL Central and are +161 road underdogs against the Cubs.

                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hot lines: Friday's best MLB bets

Cincinnati Reds vs. New York Mets (-152, 8 ½)

The Mets lead the Atlanta Braves by 2 ½ games for top spot in the NL East after the first half of the season. For some GMs, that’s the definition of a great first half.

                              Not Omar Minaya.

What he sees is an underachieving club with a so-so .268 batting average that should be far and away the top club in the majors, not the club squeaking out a lead in their division. So Minaya fired his hitting coach, Rick Down, over the All-Star break against the wishes of manager and friend Willie Randolph.

Rickey Henderson was hired as a replacement, which has left many scratching their heads. But the message is clear: anything less than performing like the best team in the bigs is unacceptable.

The Mets didn’t exactly light up the scoreboard in their first game back, but they did manage a 3-2 win over the Reds yesterday.

                              Pick: Mets -152

Toronto Blue Jays vs. Boston Red Sox (-145, 11)

If you’re a bettor who normally ignores the umpire when you do your handicapping, this is one game you might want to pay attention to. John Hirschbeck, the No. 2 umpire in MLB in terms of home winning percentage (.778 at 7-2), will call the balls and strikes tonight in Boston.

The home team has won the last four games in which he’s been behind home plate even though two of those teams were underdogs. He has a relatively high strike percentage compared to many other umpires, which could help Red Sox starter Julian Tavarez, who has struggled lately at 0-3 in his last three games.

Hirschbeck isn’t exactly a fan of either the Jays or the Sox – Boston has lost the last five games in which he’s umpired and Toronto has lost the last seven.

                              Pick: Boston -145

St. Louis Cardinals vs. Philadelphia Phillies (-145, 9 ½)

For a team that has 9,999 losses, it’s stating the obvious to say the Phillies owe somebody a win. Today it happens to be their starting pitcher, 22-year-old Kyle Kendrick.

Kendrick, 3-0 in five starts with a 4.40 ERA, had the Phillies all set up for a win in his last start against the Rockies. He went six strong innings and left his club with a 6-3 lead when the bullpen came in to begin the seventh inning. The pen then allowed a run in each of the next three innings – and one more in the 10th – to blow the game.

“It sucks we lost this game,” Kendrick told reporters afterwards.

Ballsy for a guy who just got called up from Double-A last month. He’s earned the right in a short time, though.

The Phillies should respond in their attempt to fight off loss No. 10,000 for one more game.

                              Pick: Phillies -145

                              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
