Six impressions from the All-Star Game......

-- In his post-game press conference, Jim Leyland actually spoke up for having the DH at every All-Star Game. Yes!!!

-- Ichiro's inside-park homer was first ever in All-Star Game.

-- I'm a big fan of every team having a representative at the All-Star Game. Hey, Carl Crawford wouldn't have been in the game otherwise, and he hit a home run.......

-- American League is still way better than the National, but it is stupid to award home field for World Series home field based on this game. Incredibly stupid.

-- Best part of night; Willie Mays is throwing balls into the crowd as he sits on back of a pink Cadillac; as he looks at a cop on the field, he flips the guy a baseball. Nice touch.

-- There are three current major league managers who have the same job they had the last time NL won All-Star Game, back in 1996-- Cox, Larussa, Torre.

12) Denver is 19-6 vs spread if it had previous week off.......

11) Arizona is 9-2 vs spread as an underdog off a bye, but off a win, they've covered just five of last 18 as a favorite.

10) Packers covered one of last eight at home vs AFC teams; since 1980, they're 5-10 as favorite in season openers.

9) Dallas is 4-15 vs spread on road vs AFC clubs; they're 7-18 vs spread in last 25 season finales, 2-10 if an underdog.

8) Falcons failed to cover their last 11 home games, coming off a home win.

7) Vikings are 2-11 vs spread as a road favorite if they lost the previous game.

6) Baltimore covered four of their last 16 if they won in their previous game.

5) John Fox is 11-2 vs spread as a head coach when he is in a revenge situation.

4) Favorite covered six of last seven Bengal-Raven games.

3) Buffalo covered 13 of last 14 the week after playing their division nemesis, the Patriots.

San Antonio Silver Stars at Phoenix Mercury (-3, 167)

Phoenix has owned the Silver Stars so far this year but things should play out differently this time. San Antonio is brimming with confidence after collecting wins in seven of its last nine games, including a victory over the Detroit Shock.

San Antonio forward Sophia Young will be the difference-maker. Her game is well suited for the up-tempo pace Phoenix enjoys playing.

Connecticut Sun at Seattle Storm (-8, 151)

Connecticut has demonstrated they can score with ease. Saturday’s 110-89 victory marked the first time in WNBA history a team had scored over 100 points in back-to-back games (Connecticut scored 109 during Friday’s loss to the Mercury).

Katie Douglas and Asjha Jones have been leading the offensive onslaught with forward Nykesha Sales fighting a sore knee, but will either player commit to playing defense?

Seattle will play its second afternoon game in as many days when they host the Sun on Wednesday.

- Ichiro Suzuki, Mariners, went 3-for-3 with an inside-the-park home run to lead the American League to a 5-4 victory over the National League in the All-Star game.

STREAK

In a decade of dominance, the AL has won the last 10 All-Star games played to a decision, only 2002's notorious tie at Milwaukee interrupting the run. The only longer streak was when the NL took 11 in a row from 1972-82. The AL improved to 5-0 since the All-Star winner received homefield advantage in the World Series.

MVP

Ichiro Suzuki is closing in on a contract extension with the Seattle Mariners - and he showed his club why it would want to keep him around for the long haul. Suzuki hit the first inside-the-park home run in All-Star game history Tuesday night, winning MVP honors and helping the American League to a 5-4 victory. His go-ahead, two-run drive off San Diego's Chris Young took a crazy bounce off the right-field wall - he's never hit one during the regular season.

COMEBACK THWARTED

After Alfonso Soriano's two-out, two-run homer in the ninth, the NL loaded the bases on three walks before Los Angeles Angels' closer Francisco Rodriguez retired Aaron Rowand on a routine fly to right for the save.

SPOTLIGHT ON BONDS

Barry Bonds flied to right field in the first inning, hit an opposite-field shot to the left-field warning track in the third, then departed at the top of the fourth. Hitting in the No. 2 spot - his last regular-season appearance in that slot was 20 years ago - he even faked a bunt on the first pitch of his second at-bat.

''That was sweet. That ball is a double and he turns it into more.'' - Boston slugger and AL All-Star David Ortiz, on Ichiro Suzuki's inside-the-park homer in the AL's 5-4 win over the NL on Tuesday. Ortiz started at first base and went 0-for-2 in the victory.

SEASONS July 11

1914 - Babe Ruth made his major league debut for the Boston Red Sox and received credit for a 4-3 victory over Cleveland. He was removed for a pinch hitter in the seventh, and Duffy Lewis' single led to the winning run.

1944 - Phil Cavaretta set an All-Star game record by reaching base safely five straight times - triple, single, three walks - to lead the NL to a 7-1 victory over the AL at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh.

1950 - The All-Star game returned to Comiskey Park, the site of the first game, and was won by the NL 4-3 on Red Schoendienst's 14th-inning home run off Ted Gray. It was the first extra-inning All-Star game, the first time the NL won at an AL park and the first All-Star game shown on network television.

1961 - Despite a record seven errors and pitcher Stu Miller getting blown off the Candlestick Park mound by a gale wind, the NL edged the AL 5-4 in the first of two All-Star games played that year.

1967 - Tony Perez's home run off Catfish Hunter in the 15th inning gave the NL a 2-1 win in the longest game in All-Star history. The game was played in California's Anaheim Stadium.

1973 - Jim Northrup of Detroit knocked in eight runs, batting in the leadoff spot, to lead the Tigers to a 14-2 romp over the Texas Rangers.

1978 - Steve Garvey keyed the NL's 7-3 All-Star victory at San Diego's Jack Murphy Stadium with a game-tying, two-run single and a triple that sparked a four-run eighth inning.

1985 - Nolan Ryan of the Houston Astros became the first pitcher in major league history to reach the 4,000-strikeout mark when he fanned New York's Danny Heep leading off the sixth inning. The Astros beat the Mets 4-3 in 12 innings on Bill Doran's fifth hit of the game.

1995 - Jeff Conine's solo shot in the eighth inning gave the NL a 3-2 victory in the All-Star game. Craig Biggio and Mike Piazza also homered for the NL.

2000 - Derek Jeter of the New York Yankees went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored as the AL defeated the NL 6-3 in the All-Star game. Jeter became the first Yankee to win the All-Star game MVP.

2006 - With the American League down to its final strike, Michael Young hit a two-run triple off Trevor Hoffman for a 3-2 victory that kept the Americans unbeaten in the All-Star game for the past decade. The NL took a 2-1 lead into the ninth behind David Wright's homer and some daring, old-style baserunning.
