    Six-pack for Sunday

    Anatomy of a Marathon

-- Mets beat Astros 5-3 in 17 innings Saturday night; a total of 509 pitches were thrown in the 5:05 marathon. Very long evening for home plate umpire Randazzo.

-- Both sides used eight pitchers in game; six of eight Astro pitchers who got in have an ERA of 5.34 or higher -- other two are at 4.19/4.58, which is why Houston is having a bad season. Relievers did pitch well in this game, though.

-- Met bullpen threw 11 scoreless innings; in entire contest, there were only eight walks and 23 strikeouts.

-- Loretta went 0 for 7, Loduca 0 for 8; both their averages dropped nine points for the night. Not good.

-- Mets never double-switched until 17th inning, so a total of 12 different Mets were in #9 spot in order. If you tried to keep a scorecard for this game, it must look like an inkblot.

-- Beltran saved game with acrobatic catch up Tal's Hill out in centerfield in bottom of 14th; he misses that ball, Astros win the game. His experience as an Astro helped there.

Sunday's List of 13: Odds and ends on a summer Sunday

      13) Phillies scored three runs in four batters in first inning at Coors Field Saturday, then the rains came, game was delayed 1:22, and when it resumed, no one told the Phillies, who failed to score for rest of game in a 6-3 loss. Weird group they are.

      12) Then there are the Devil Rays, who once again snatched defeat from the jaws of victory; leading 6-4 in 8th inning, they take rookie starter Sonnanstine (97 PT, one walk) out, and put their sorry relievers in. First five Royals in 8th inning walked, and Tampa Bay lost in 9th inning, 8-7. Just hideous.

      11) Rays are 34-52; last year at this time, they were 11 games under .500 at break, before dumping Huff/Lugo for nothing, instead of letting them walk via free agency, so they could get some extra draft picks, which a smart organization would have turned into more mature college pitchers. Ugh.

      10) Lugo may be awful in Boston, but he was hitting .308 for Rays with 12 homers, when they liberated him from Tampa in a move that didn't help anyone involved, especially Lugo.

      9) Saw Angel pitching coach Mike Butcher on TV Saturday; he seems lot happier now than last year, when he was head of the Devil Ray pitchers. He looked like he had heartburn all of last season, even getting tossed early in the season finale.

      8) Dodgers, Arizona both lost four games in row, so Padres are now two games up in NL West, even though they aren't exactly playing great ball, either. Milton Bradley got into his first game for San Diego Saturday-- lucky them.

      7) OK, Saturday was July 7, 2007 (7-7-07) and at Saturday's NASCAR race, the 07 car finished seventh. Eerie.

      6) New football leagues are sprouting up everywhere; there is going to be a fall league that plays on Friday nights, and now a spring league based in college football hotbeds is starting to take shape. Neither says they want to challenge the NFL.

      5) Mark Cuban is behind the Friday night fall league, and the spring league seems to be headed towards having alumni of big-time college teams all play on same teams in the AAFL, playing on same fields they did in college. One thing on this league- you'll need a college degree to play in it. We'll see.

      4) If playoffs started Sunday morning, these eight get in:

      NL- Mets-Brewers-Padres-Los Angeles
      AL- Red Sox-Tigers-Angels-Cleveland

      3) Can the Bronx Bombers trade Roger Clemens? They're 9.5 games out of the Wild Card, with six teams ahead of them. If they wanted to raise the white flag, can they trade him to a contender? It won't happen, but I wonder if anyone put some kind of clause about that in his contract?

      2) Phillies are 5-13 in one-run games; they're pretty close to being a good team, but seem to be missing a little fire.

      1) I mean, who gets shut out for eight innings at Coors Field? If I own the Phillies, I bring in Wally Backman from exile to be the manager-- he got in some off-field trouble, but has been a successful minor league skipper, and would kick some butts on a team that looks like it could use it. Plus, Joe Kerrigan is being wasted as bullpen coach in the Bronx; bring him to the City of Brotherly Love to help that sorry pitching staff.

Keep in mind the visiting teams all played last week, and the home teams had a bye.

Philadelphia @ Georgia-- Soul QB Graziani once was backup for Falcons, so homecoming of sorts; Philly won its last three games, five of last seven, beating Orlando last two weeks- they got beat at home by Georgia 57-49 in Week 6 (-6) their first loss after four wins and a bye-- loss sent them on six-week tailspin. Georgia has won 14 of 16 this season, winning and covering last five; they're 6-2 vs spread as home favorite, winning by 9,2,1,15,21,14,21,26.

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lady luck: Sunday’s best WBNA bets

Sacramento Monarchs at New York Liberty (+2 ½, 137 ½)

It wasn’t the prettiest basketball when these teams met June 26. They hit only 39 of their combined 112 shots from the floor during a defensive battle that played 36 ½ points under the total.

Both the Monarchs and Liberty have played better offensive basketball since then, with Sacramento averaging 81.7 points in its three subsequent games and New York scoring 71.7 in its own trio of contests.

Both teams also won Friday night, though the Liberty’s overtime win over the defending champs was the more impressive victory. Janel McCarville led New York to an 82-81 win in Detroit, the Liberty’s second as a road underdog in three games. Unfortunately Sunday’s game takes place at Madison Square Garden, where New York has dropped each of its last two home games.

Sacramento has beaten the Liberty at MSG in each of the last two seasons and shot 59 percent from the floor in its win in Minneapolis on Friday night. The Monarchs beat New York by 13 points in their last meeting, enough of a margin to suggest they’ll sweep the season series on Sunday.

                    Pick: Monarchs -2 ½

Phoenix Mercury at Detroit Shock (-4, 168 ½)

Winning the 2006 league championship makes Detroit as public a team as you’ll find in the WNBA, which explains how the Shock have been favored in all 16 of their games in 2007. The favorite role has been a burden for backers lately, as Detroit is on a 0-6 against-the-spread (ATS) run.

"We're imploding as a basketball team right now," head coach Bill Laimbeer told the Detroit Free-Press after Friday’s loss to the Liberty. It was Detroit’s fourth loss in five games after starting the season 11-1.

“We missed defensive assignments, and that's just bad basketball,” the former NBA “Bad Boy” continued. “And that's what we are right now – a bad basketball team."

Detroit hasn’t covered a spread against Phoenix since the summer of 2004. The Mercury won their fourth game in a row on Friday night and are 3-0 straight up (SU) and ATS in their last three road games.

                    Pick: Mercury +4

                    Houston Comets at Minnesota Lynx (-5 , 155 ½)

The two worst teams in the Western Conference meet on Sunday evening, their first head-to-head clash this season. Houston is winless on the road while Minnesota lost both its home games last week. This could get ugly. While both teams lost (again) on Friday, however, one defeat was harsher than the other.

Houston suffered a 16-point loss on its home court to a Seattle Storm team playing without all-star Sue Bird. The Comets were ineffective on offense, committing 24 turnovers and getting to the line only three times in the entire game.

Minnesota lost at home on Friday too, but it was a hard-fought game played in unfamiliar surroundings against the Western Conference leaders. A Prince concert was scheduled for the Target Center on Friday, so the game was moved to Williams Arena instead. Head coach Don Zierden was pleased with his team’s performance under difficult conditions.

"We did a lot of things better tonight," Zierden told the Minneapolis Star Tribune. "We won the turnovers, we outrebounded them, but it came down to shooting percentage tonight. (The Monarchs) made their shots."

                    Pick: Lynx -5

Boston Red Sox at Detroit Tigers (1:05 PM ET)
Boston starter Daisuke Matsuzaka picked up a complete game victory in his lone career start against Detroit, allowing just one run and six hits while issuing no walks and fanning five. EDGE: RED SOX
Matsuzaka has allowed two earned runs or less in six straight starts. The right-hander has also tallied an impressive 51 strikeouts over that span. BIG EDGE: UNDER
Detroit’s Nate Robertson is 3-2 with a 4.56 ERA in nine home starts this season. The Tigers have lost three straight games at Comerica Park with him on the hill. SLIGHT EDGE: RED SOX
Robertson has been very effective in four daytime starts in 2007, posting a 2-1 record and 2.81 ERA. He’s allowed just one home run in 25 2/3 innings. EDGE: TIGERS
The UNDER is 6-0 in Matsuzaka’s last six starts overall.

Los Angeles Angels at New York Yankees (1:05 PM ET)
Los Angeles right-hander Ervin Santana has a perfect 4-0 record and 3.47 ERA in four career starts against New York. He picked up two of those victories last season, allowing five earned runs and nine hits in 12 innings. BIG EDGE: ANGELS
Santana is a miserable 1-7 with a 7.45 ERA in nine road starts this season. He’s allowed an astronomical 15 home runs in just 48 1/3 innings away from Angels Stadium. BIG EDGE: YANKEES
New York’s Chien-Ming Wang has lost both career starts against Los Angeles, allowing eight runs and 19 hits in 13 1/3 innings. EDGE: ANGELS
Wang is a solid 5-3 with a 3.14 ERA in eight home starts this season. He collected an 8-0 victory over the Minnesota Twins in his last outing at Yankee Stadium. EDGE: YANKEES
The UNDER is 13-4 in the Angels last 17 Sunday games.

Cleveland Indians at Toronto Blue Jays (1:07 PM ET)
•Indians starter Paul Byrd is 3-2 with a 3.55 ERA in five starts against Toronto. He’s issued just two walks in 33 innings versus the Blue Jays. EDGE: INDIANS
Byrd’s 3.74 road ERA is nearly two runs lower than his 5.63 ERA at Jacobs Field. EDGE: UNDER
Blue Jays right-hander Josh Towers is 1-2 with a 5.63 ERA in five career outings against the Indians. He surrendered three earned runs and four hits in 2 1/3 innings against them in a relief appearance earlier this year. EDGE: INDIANS
Toronto has picked up three straight victories with Towers on the hill, as the offense has provided him with 25 runs of support over that span. EDGE: BLUE JAYS & OVER
The UNDER is 5-0 in Byrd’s last five Sunday starts.

Atlanta Braves at San Diego Padres (ESPN | 8:05 PM ET)
Atlanta’s Kyle Davies is 2-4 with a 6.21 ERA in eight road starts this season. He’s issued 23 walks and struck out just 19 in 37 2/3 innings away from Turner Field. EDGE: BRAVES & OVER
Opposing hitters are hitting for a remarkable .315 average against Davies in his 26 career outings on the road. EDGE: OVER
Padres starter Greg Maddux is a solid 8-4 with a 4.12 ERA in 16 career games against the Braves. EDGE: PADRES
Maddux has posted a 5-3 record and 3.48 ERA in eight home starts in 2007. The Padres have lost the future Hall of Famer's last two starts at Petco Park, providing just five runs of support. SLIGHT EDGE: PADRES & UNDER
The OVER is 21-5-2 in the last 28 meetings in San Diego.

                        Sunday’s MLB betting notes

                        Johnny on the spot

Johnny Damon has struggled with injuries this season and has predominantly been used as the Yankees designated hitter. But as his fitness returns and other people need a rest, he could be forced to play in different positions the next few weeks.

On Friday, Yankees manager Joe Torre decided to give Hideki Matsui a break from the field, making him the DH.

That led to Damon playing at left field for the first time in nearly six years. He’s expected to continue making spot-starts in the corners when Matsui and Bobby Abreu need a break.

"I've got to go out there and wing it, and hopefully get to as many balls as possible," Damon told MLB.com. "You play a little shallower in the corners, and the ball spins off left-handers' bats a little bit different, and hooks off right-handed bats a bit more. It's a change."

The Yankees have not decided if Damon will be "winging it" in the corners or back at DH for Sunday’s series finale against the L.A. Angels. What we do know is Chien-Ming Wang (8-4, 3.58 ERA) will take the mound to face Ervin Santana (5-9, 5.35 ERA), with the Yankees –184 favorites.

                        LaRoche on a run

Pittsburgh Pirates first baseman Adam LaRoche is on an offensive streak that’s drawing comparisons to a similar run he went on last year while with the Atlanta Braves. But as MLB.com reports, he is not the man to ask about his career statistics.

"I don't have that good of a memory," joked LaRoche when asked by the website to compare his form to last year. "I remember some streaks being really locked in, but I think I was walking more."

LaRoche is batting .459 with five homers and 11 RBIs in his last nine games. Overall, he is batting .238 with 51 RBIs and 13 homers for the season.

The Pirates close out a three-game series against the Chicago Cubs on Sunday. Shane Youman (1-0, 3.00 ERA) squares up to Carlos Zambrano (10-6, 4.04 ERA) on the mound and the Cubs are –164 favorites

No sap: Mora misses home remedy

Baltimore's Melvin Mora might not be able to play the field this side of the All-Star break after injuring his left foot in a collision with Angels catcher Mike Napoli last week. Mora has missed every Orioles game since then, but did declare himself fit enough to pinch-hit on Friday.

In fact, Mora believes if he was home in Venezuela he would be playing by now thanks to a herbal remedy available there that uses the sap of a tree. The sap is wrapped around the injured area with a leaf.

"I don't know what kind of tree it is, but my mother would know," Mora told MLB.com. "I'd be playing today. But here, in this country, it's ice it and wait a few days."

With Mora likely on the sidelines, Baltimore takes on the Texas Rangers in their series finale on Sunday. Daniel Cabrera (6-9, 5.15 ERA) gets the start for the Orioles and Texas counters with Kevin Millwood (5-7, 6.64 ERA). The Rangers are –114 favorites with the total set at 9 ½.

                        Crisp hitting

The Boston Red Sox might be 11 games ahead in the AL East, but their offense has struggled at times in recent weeks. The one exception to that is center fielder Coco Crisp, who is enjoying his best run of the season as some of Boston’s big hitters go cold.

The Boston Globe reported on Saturday that Crisp is on a seven-game hitting streak, during which he’s batting .370. That run includes four doubles, a triple and four homers. The current streak has taken many by surprise because earlier this season Crisp found life very hard at the plate.

"I basically stunk in the beginning of the season, so I wasn't hitting any balls hard, so none of them could really be home runs unless I got lucky," Crisp told the Globe.

"Now I'm feeling better. I've always had pop, not like Big Papi. But I can hit 15, 20 home runs."

Crisp has hit in 15 of his last 16 games and gets that chance to add to that on Sunday as the Red Sox take on the Detroit Tigers in their final game before the All-Star break. Daisuke Matsuzaka (10-5, 5.53 ERA) squares up to Nate Robertson (4-6, 4.86 ERA) and Boston are –134 favorites.

                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                          Sunday MLB Gameday

Daisuke Matsuzaka will be gunning for his 11th win of the season when the Red Sox close out their campaign's first half Sunday afternoon. Here is your MLB Gameday . . .

Boston Red Sox at Detroit Tigers, 1:05pm ET
Daisuke Matsuzaka (10-5, 3.53 ERA) vs. Nate Robertson (4-6, 4.86 ERA)

Dice-K has been hard to score on since the beginning of June; in those six outings he's given up a total of just six earned runs. Matsuzaka now has a 10-5 record on the season, and his ERA is down to 3.53. As well, he's averaging more than one strikeout per inning. Against the D-Rays on Tuesday the righthander threw eight shutout innings.

Robertson hasn't won since May 19, when he held the Cardinals to two earned runs over five innings of work. Since then the lefthander is 0-3 with two no-decisions, which has dropped his season mark to 4-6. Last time out, against the Indians on Tuesday, Robertson allowed three earned runs on six hits over five innings, and struck out eight.

Los Angeles Angels at New York Yankees, 1:05pm ET
                          Ervin Santana (5-9, 5.35 ERA) vs. Chien-Ming Wang (8-4, 3.58 ERA)

Santana had another weak road outing on Tuesday, surrendering four earned runs on seven hits in only 5 1-3 innings of work. However, the righthander did manage to pick up a career-high 11 strikeouts in that game. Santana hasn't added to his win total since June 9, when he held the Cardinals to just three earned runs on six hits over six innings.

Wang has won five straight decisions to improve his season record to 8-4, and he's gone 4-0 with two no-decisions since the beginning of June. Last time out, against the Twins on Tuesday, the righthander tossed seven scoreless innings, giving up just four hits and striking out three. Wang's ERA is now down to 3.58, and he's fanned 45 hitters.

Arizona Diamondbacks at San Diego Padres, 1:15pm ET
Yusmeiro Petit (1-1, 2.19 ERA) vs. Aaron Harang (9-2, 3.84 ERA)

The Diamondbacks have liked what they've seen from Petit so far this season. Over two starts the young righthander has a 1-1 record with a 2.19 ERA. That first outing came back in April, when he held the Giants to two runs over seven innings. In place of Randy Johnson on Tuesday the rookie held the Cardinals to one earned run over 5 1-3 innings.

Harang is rolling along for the Reds; since the beginning of June the righthander is 3-0 with three no-decisions, and he's improved his season record to 9-2. Harang's only rough outing recently came against the Phillies on June 27, when he allowed five runs over six innings. On Tuesday Harang limited San Francisco to three runs in six innings.

Atlanta Braves at San Diego Padres, 8:05pm ET
Kyle Davies (3-7, 5.85 ERA) vs. Greg Maddux (7-5, 3.96 ERA)

Davies had lost four straight starts until picking up a no-decision on Tuesday night; the righthander hasn't added a victory to his total since beating the Cubs on June 1. In those five outings Davies has given up five earned runs three times, and he did that over just two innings of work against the Dodgers on Tuesday. Davies has fanned 53.

Maddux went 3-1 with a no-decision in the month of June, but he allowed six earned runs on 10 hits over 6 1-3 innings against the Marlins in his first July outing on Tuesday. That dropped the righthander's record to 7-5 on the season, and upped his ERA to 3.96. In those five June outings Maddux allowed only 11 earned runs over his 31 2-3 innings.
