    Streaking Pitchers

    Saturday, July 7

    Hot

Ted Lilly (Chicago Cubs) - Lilly has won back-to-back starts for the second time this season and based on his last performance the streak could continue tonight. He had a no-hitter through 4 1-3 innings on Monday when the Cubs beat the Nationals 7-2. The left-hander, 7-4 with a 3.84 ERA this season, will be trying for his first career victory against the Pirates.

Erik Bedard (Baltimore Orioles) - Even though Bedard is coming off a poor performance in his last start he was one of the most effective pitchers in the majors in May and June. Bedard continues to lead the majors in strikeouts with 134 and will try to regain his dominating form against the Rangers tonight. The left-hander is 2-1 with a 3.42 ERA in four career starts against Texas. Baltimore is a -122 road favorite for this game.

Kason Gabbard (Boston Red Sox) - One would think an injury to Curt Schilling would slow down the BoSox just a bit. One would be wrong. Thanks to pitchers like Gabbard the Sox still lead the AL East comfortably. The left-hander is 2-0 since being called up and had a shutout going into the fifth inning in his last start. His 5.79 ERA may not be that good but with the Red Sox offense behind him he has plenty of value. Gabbard has never faced the Tigers.

    Cold

Boof Bonser (Minnesota Twins) - Boof Bonser has to wonder if there is any scoring left for him after the Twins pound out 32 runs yesterday. The Twins right-hander has dropped his last three decisions and has allowed at least four runs in five of six starts. Bonser is 1-0 in two starts versus the White Sox this year, with six runs allowed over 13 2-3 innings.

              ---------------------------------------------------------
              WNBA Preview
              ---------------------------------------------------------

              Preview: Washington at Chicago

GAME: Washington Mystics (5-12) at Chicago Sky (8-8)
              DATE/TIME: Saturday, July 07 - 8:00 PM ET
              SPREAD: Chicago -2.5 TOTAL: 157.5

The Chicago Sky are again in position to make team history in only their second WNBA season.

Coming off a pair of overtime victories, Chicago looks to win three games in a row for the first time when it hosts the Washington Mystics on Saturday night.

Candice Dupree scored 24 points and had 11 rebounds in the Sky's 74-71 overtime win at Los Angeles on Sunday. That came two nights after Chicago (8-8) defeated Western Conference-leading Sacramento 92-84 in double overtime.

Chicago, which went 5-29 in its inaugural 2006 season, has failed twice this season to win three in a row. They could be in good position to finally accomplish that against Washington (5-12), which is in last place in the Eastern Conference and trying to avoid a third straight loss.

"I think we're very confident,' said Dupree, who is among the league's top scorers at 19.5 points per game. "Our chemistry jelled a little faster this year."

Jia Perkins, who had a career-high 39 points against Sacramento, added 15 on Sunday. Rookie Armintie Price had nine points, 10 rebounds, six assists and five steals for the Sky, who finished 2-1 on a road trip that began with a 94-76 loss to Seattle.

The Sky also improved to 6-3 on the road and hope to carry that momentum over to their home court where they are 2-5, including a 99-86 loss to Washington on June 23.

"We stepped up our game," said Sky forward Chasity Melvin, who spent three years with Washington before being traded to Chicago for Monique Currie three games into this season. "We got two on this road trip, we finished on a positive note and we go back to Chicago with a lot of confidence."

Perkins, a fourth-year guard from Texas Tech, averages just 8.7 points, but is averaging 24.3 in her last three games since becoming a starter.

Dupree scored 26 points against the Mystics in the most recent meeting and had 19 in Chicago's 75-70 win at Washington on June 1.

Washington lost 84-79 to San Antonio and closed out its three-game homestand with back-to-back losses by just 12 points combined.

Alana Beard had 26 points - bettering her 18.5 season average - and Currie added 16 for the Mystics. The pair, though, combined to go 1-for-7 from 3-point range where the team shot 19.0 percent (4-for-21) for the game.

DeLisha Milton-Jones, the club's second-leading scorer at 14.1 points per game, had 22 against Chicago in the teams' most recent contest, but has topped her average just once in her last four games.

The teams will conclude their season series on Aug. 5 in Washington.

              Preview: Seattle at San Antonio

GAME: Seattle Storm (10-7) at San Antonio Silver Stars (10-6)
              DATE/TIME: Saturday, July 07 - 8:00 PM ET
SPREAD: San Antonio -4 TOTAL: 146.5

A matchup between Western Conference All-Star starters Becky Hammon and Sue Bird unfortunately won't materialize Saturday night.

Both players will likely be sidelined when Hammon's San Antonio Silver Stars, looking for a third straight win, host Bird's Seattle Storm.

Hammon, who is set to become the second player to start the All-Star game for both conferences, has missed the last two games with a sprained left foot. She has shined in her first season with San Antonio (10-6), leading the club in scoring (19.1) and leading the league with 5.4 assists per game.

Bird ranks second in assists with 5.0 per game, and was chosen to be part of the West's three-guard lineup in the All-Star game along with Hammon and Phoenix's Diana Taurasi. Bird, however, is out for Seattle (10-7) due to arthroscopic knee surgery she underwent Friday and is expected to miss two weeks, including the All-Star game.

Although Hammon has missed the last two contests, San Antonio won both. After a 71-68 victory at Detroit on Sunday, the Silver Stars completed their road trip Tuesday with an 84-79 win at Washington.

A big reason for San Antonio's success was outstanding play by forward Erin Buescher, who had averaged only 9.6 points in her team's first 14 games. She averaged 21.0 points on 13-of-22 shooting from the field - her best two-game stretch of the season.

Sophia Young matched a season high with 24 points and Buescher added 19 on Tuesday as the Silver Stars won for the sixth time in eight games. San Antonio shot a season-high 56.4 percent from the floor and also welcomed back center Ruth Riley, who made all five of her shots for 10 points.

Riley missed the game in Detroit against her former team with a sprained left foot.

Seattle may not have Bird, but it does have WNBA leading scorer Lauren Jackson, who also leads the league with eight double-doubles. She had another with 28 points and 13 rebounds Friday as the Storm began a three-game road trip with a 71-55 win at Houston.

Jackson, who is averaging 23.1 points, has five double-doubles in her last seven games. She's averaging 18.0 points and 12.5 rebounds in posting two double-doubles this year against San Antonio for Seattle, which has won five of its last six games overall.

The Silver Stars have overcome Jackson's production to win by double digits in both meetings with the Storm. San Antonio placed five players in double figures in each victory.

              Preview: Connecticut at Los Angeles

GAME: Connecticut Sun (6-11) at Los Angeles Sparks (7-10)
              DATE/TIME: Saturday, July 07 - 10:30 PM ET
SPREAD: Los Angeles -1 TOTAL: 147.5

The Los Angeles Sparks look to end their longest losing streak in four years when they host the Connecticut Sun on Saturday night.

Los Angeles (7-10) has dropped four straight games and eight of 10 after a 57-56 loss to Indiana on Thursday. Rookie Sidney Spencer scored a season-high 18 points and added seven rebounds for the Sparks, who didn't score over the final 2:42 while letting a four-point lead slip away."

You can't knock our effort," Sparks coach Michael Cooper said. "That was great, the first time in a long time, and we've just got to stay with it."

Los Angeles has endured a difficult season, with star center Lisa Leslie sitting out the year on maternity leave and Chamique Holdsclaw announcing her retirement after five games.

In addition, Taj McWilliams-Franklin missed the game against Indiana with a sore right hamstring and point guard Temeka Johnson has played just once this season after undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery."

Taj is our morale booster and so is Temeka. We're looking forward to having them back," Sparks center Christi Thomas said. "We need a little bit of everything right now."

It's been a disappointing year in particular for McWilliams-Franklin, whose status is uncertain for what would be her second game against her former team. She scored 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds in the Sparks' 88-68 win at Connecticut (6-11) on May 26.

McWilliams-Franklin is averaging 11.7 points and 6.2 rebounds - her lowest numbers since the 2003 season.

Los Angeles, though, has gotten solid play from Sherill Baker, who has reached double figures four times in seven games since she was acquired from New York. She's averaging 10.4 points for the Sparks.

The Sun opened a four-game road trip with a wrenching 111-109 double-overtime loss at Phoenix on Friday. Connecticut fell to 3-7 in games decided by five points or fewer after going 9-2 in such games a season ago, en route to posting the best record in the league at 26-8 overall.

Nykesha Sales and Asjha Jones each scored 22 points for Connecticut, which led by as many as 14 points in the first half.

The Sun fell despite setting a franchise record with 16 3-pointers and holding a 52-38 edge on the glass. Reserve forward Kristen Rasmussen made five 3-pointers and had 17 points and a team-high 13 rebounds.
