    Six-pack for Saturday

    Our July 7, 2007 (7-7-07) edition

-- John Elway may have won two Super Bowls, but he never played in a college bowl game, losing that chance in his last college game, the Stanford Band game. Had Cardinal won in that game, they would have gone to a bowl that season.

-- Pistol Pete Maravich wore #7 for the New Orleans Jazz. It, to this day, is one of the coolest retro jerseys.

-- Josh Towers of Blue Jays wears #7-- he is only pitcher in big leagues with a single digit number.

-- When Barry Bonds first broke in with Pittsburgh, he had #7, before switching to his godfather's (Willie Mays) #24

-- Bert Jones wore #7 throughout his football career, but in his brief time as a Ram, he wore #17, because #7 is retired by the Rams, in honor of Bob Waterfield.

-- Phil Esposito and Ray Bourque both wore #7 for Bruins, but the night they raised Espo's sweater to rafters, Bourque took his #7 off, to reveal a #77 sweater underneath. He wore #77 the rest of his career.

Saturday's List of 13: Random thoughts on a Saturday

      13) Fantasy sports are fun for variety of reasons; it is cool to see how different people view the same situation. Someone in our league cut Orlando Hernandez after his dreadful start this week at Coors Field, but he only lasted 38 minutes on waivers before he got scooped up, setting a new league record.

      12) How would you like to be football coach at Duke? One of the nation's best prep QBs is at Duke-- he plays hoops. Then the kid's brother decides to play football, but decided to go to North Carolina, not Duke. Unemployment awaits............

      11) Hanley Ramirez hit two homers Friday night, but it was a shocking two-out bunt single that scored winning run in 6-5 Marlins' win early Saturday morning. Looking up his bio, just realized that Ramirez was born on my 24th birthday. Damn......

      10) There is pitcher on Milwaukee's AAA team named Grant Balfour, the worst name ever for a pitcher, but the kid is doing great this year, striking out 46 in 30.1 IP, with eight walks. An Australian, Balfour has a 1.80 ERA in 22 games for Nashville.

      9) Imagine a rotation of Balfour, Bob Walk, Kameron Loe and Homer Bailey, all terrible names for pitchers.

      8) Did Brewers' success this season grease the skids for the departure of Pirate CEO Kevin McClatchey? Neither team has had winning season since '92, but Milwaukee seems headed to playoffs this season, while the Pirates, while improved, are not a playoff contender. These things do happen.......

      7) Watching lot of baseball every night, it looks as if All-Star break will be welcome by many. A's are finishing 17 games in 17 day stretch, with two starting pitchers and their top two closers all hurt, so the three-day vacation will be good thing.

      6) A's have used 25 different position players this year, while Detroit, Seattle have used same 13 all season. Seven Oakland players have made their major league debut this season, most of any big league team in '07.

      5) Mets' Jose Reyes looks tired; he has taken to not running all the time on ground balls; he got yanked Friday night after not running out 60-foot grounder that didn't roll foul, as he thought it might. For some reason, he looks ticked off.

      4) After ARod's wife wore t-shirt with "F--- You" printed on it Sunday and nothing was done, female reporter for New York Post got tossed from the ballpark in the Bronx Tuesday, after wearing the same shirt. The reported was sitting in seat that cost $88-- for that one game.

      3) Meanwhile, on Wednesdays in Oakland, you can get into the park for $2, and buy $1 hot dogs. There are always seats available for $9 in Oakland, any night of the week.

      2) Oregon State won last two national titles in baseball, while arch-rival Oregon doesn't field a baseball team.

      1) World Series of Poker Main Event, the $10,000 buy-in that determines this year's world champion, got underway Friday. No word yet on the official count, but it is expected to be just about 9,000, give or take few, with first prize of around $13M.

          Baseball – Gameday

          MLB

          Saturday, July 7

          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
          Gameday
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

          Saturday MLB Gameday

Roger Clemens will be looking to boost his season record to the .500 mark when he takes the mound for New York on Saturday afternoon. Here is your MLB Gameday:

Cleveland Indians at Toronto Blue Jays, 1:07pm ET
Fausto Carmona (9-4, 3.78 ERA) vs. Shaun Marcum (4-2, 2.86 ERA)

Carmona is already up to nine wins this season - and that's even after picking up the loss in three of his past five outings. The righthander, though, was only roughed up in one of those games, allowing eight earned runs in just one inning of work versus Oakland June 27. Last time out Carmona held the D-Rays to one run over six innings.

Marcum has impressed the Blue Jays since joining their rotation, going 2-0 with four no-decisions since the beginning of June. The righthander surrendered no more than three earned runs in any of those six outings. and his ERA is down to 2.86 on the season. In his last outing, against the Mariners on Sunday, Marcum pitched 6 2-3 shutout innings.

Los Angeles Angels at New York Yankees, 3:55pm ET
John Lackey (11-5, 3.04 ERA) vs. Roger Clemens (2-3, 4.26 ERA)

Lackey picked up his 11th win of the season last Sunday, holding the Orioles to three earned runs on four hits over 7 1-3 innings of work. The righthander, though, has seen his ERA climb over 3.00 since the beginning of June, as he gave up three or more earned runs in four of those six outings. Lackey has struck out 87 over 112 2-3 innings.

Clemens has been solid but not spectacular for the Yankees this season, with a 2-3 record and an ERA over 4.00. The Rocket, though, is coming off his best outing of 2007, allowing just one earned run on two hits over eight innings in a win over the Twins. Overall Clemens has struck out 26 and walked just nine through 31 2-3 innings.

Arizona Diamondbacks at Cincinnati Reds, 7:10pm ET
Brandon Webb (8-6, 3.27 ERA) vs. Homer Bailey (2-2, 8.10 ERA)

Webb went the entire month of June without giving up more than three earned runs in an outing, but he was knocked around for five earned runs on seven hits over six innings versus the Cardinals on Monday. The righthander, though, still boasts a strong 3.27 ERA on the season, and he's managed to strike out 104 batters over 124 innings.

Bailey is a top prospect for the Reds, but he was absolutely pounded in his last two starts. The righthander gave up six earned runs on six hits over just 1 2-3 innings against the Phillies on June 26, and followed up that performance by allowing seven earned runs on seven hits over 3 2-3 innings of work against the Cardinals on Sunday.

Florida Marlins at Los Angeles Dodgers, 10:10pm ET
Sergio Mitre (2-4, 2.88 ERA) vs. Derek Lowe (8-7, 2.98 ERA)

Mitre hasn't been giving up a lot of runs for the Marlins, but he certainly hasn't been picking up wins either - the righthander hasn't had a victory since May 20. Since that outing Mitre is 0-2 with five no-decisions, although he's managed to keep his ERA below 3.00. Last time out, against the Padres, Mitre allowed three runs over six innings.

Lowe is 0-1 with a no-decision over his past two outings, but he surrendered just two earned runs on 13 hits over 11 2-3 innings combined in those games. The righthander is still above .500 on the season at 8-7, and he boasts a solid ERA of 2.98 (to go along with 86 strikeouts). Lowe's last win came on June 22, when he topped the Devil Rays.

              --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Keep in mind the visiting teams played last week, and the home teams had a bye.

Colorado @ San Jose-- Crush lost 72-44 in this arena in Week 6 (+7), as SaberCats led 38-10 at half, completed 33 of 40 passes, and forced four turnovers. Colorado won at Kansas City a week ago, snapping four-game losing skid- they're 2-7 if they allow 50 or more points, 7-1 if they don't. San Jose won its last ten games, is 7-1 vs spread at home, winning all eight games in this arena, by margins of 20,28,24,21,27,25,7,40 points.

Columbus @ Dallas-- Desperadoes beat Columbus twice during season, 53-51 here in Week 6 (-15), then 56-47 in Ohio six weeks ago (-5); Columbus led 37-14 at the half in the Week 6 game, was +2 in turnovers, but still somehow lost. This is fourth week in a row on road and fifth in six weeks for Columbus, which won by a point at Tampa last week. Dallas is 15-1; lot of pressure on them here- they're 3-4-1 vs spread as home favorite, 8-0 straight up.

Doubt Bishop is good enough passer to keep Argos afloat, and Allen is almost my age. TiCats got crushed 37-9 at Calgary as Stamps ran ball for 219, passed for 230 yards, in unusual bit of balance for CFL team. Toronto ran ball 17 times for 59 yards last week- they'll do better here.

He didn't look like he was moving too good and I definitely think he needs tomorrow and Sunday off to get ready for the All-Star game.'' - Angels manager Mike Scioscia joking about Alex Rodriguez on Friday night. A-Rod rejoined the Yankees' lineup a day after a strained left hamstring forced him to miss his only game this year, hit career homer No. 493 that tied him with Lou Gehrig on the all-time list and helped New York to a wild 14-9 win over Los Angeles.

                          Minnesota at Chicago White Sox
To say the Twins were happy to get out of New York is an understatement. After losing three-of-four to the Yankees and being outscored 22-13 in the process, Minnesota exploded in a double-header sweep of the Chisox yesterday by scoring 32 runs, the most in MLB since 1939. Justin Morneau capped off the big day/night rally with three home runs in a 12-0 win in the finale. Swinging the bats like that, the Twins look like a good road underdog (+145) today according to Dunkel, which has Minnesota favored straight up by 1. Dunkel Pick: Minnesota (+145). Here are all of today's games. (Note: I will not be publishing any picks from July 8 through July 12. Please check back on July 13 for our next update. Thanks for your support - Bob Dunkel)

                              Saturday, July 7

Seattle Mariners at Oakland Athletics (-126, 8)

The Seattle Mariners won eight straight games before former manager Mike Hargrove resigned. After a week of uncertainty, a new manager – John McClaren – has been put in place and the Mariners can get back to the business of winning games.

Last night they produced a convincing 7-1 win over Oakland with hot-hitting third baseman Adrian Beltre leading the way. He went 5-for-5 with two homers and has nine hits in 12 at-bats over the past three games.

Seattle sends Felix Hernandez (4-4, 4.11 ERA) to the mound today as he looks to build on a solid performance in his last game. Hernandez allowed two runs in eight innings of work against Kansas City on Monday. If he can reproduce that stuff tonight, Seattle’s offense should help him to a win.

Oakland will start Rich Harden (1-1, 1.17 ERA).

                              Pick: Seattle +118

Los Angeles Angels at New York Yankees (-128, 9)

Roger Clemens (2-3, 4.26 ERA) finally got win number 350 in his last outing on Monday. Of more importance is how he got it. The 44-year-old allowed just two hits and one earned run in eight innings against the Twins in a performance he'd have been proud of a decade ago.

Clemens takes on the Angels looking for win No. 351 today and his stats against Los Angeles make impressive reading. In 46 career starts against them he is 29-9 with a 2.53 ERA.

The Yankees, with Alex Rodriguez leading the way, are third in the AL in batting over the past seven days (41 runs, .308 batting average) and if Clemens can muster another strong start, the Yanks will get their fifth win in six games.

                              Pick: Yankees -128

Cleveland Indians at Toronto Blue Jays (+101, 9)

After getting swept by the Detroit Tigers this week, the Cleveland Indians traveled to Toronto looking to get things back on track. Last night’s series opener did not go to plan as the Jays pulled out an 8-6 victory.

Today the Indians send Fausto Carmona (9-4, 3.78 ERA) to the mound in an effort to avoid a season-high fourth straight loss. Carmona has quietly racked up the wins this year. In his last start on Monday he held Tampa Bay to two runs and four hits over six innings.

Cleveland entered July on a six-game winning streak and despite this week’s struggles, their bats have still produced 13 runs in the three losses. Pitching has been the weak link for the Indians over the past few days, but Carmona should fix that tonight.

                              Pick: Indians -109
