Tampa Bay Devil Rays at Kansas City Royals (+106, 9)

The Royals aren’t about to make a run at the AL Central title, but they just took two of three off the streaking Seattle Mariners to follow up an impressive June. Contrast with the Devil Rays, who’ve lost 11 in a row including a 15-4 shellacking at Fenway Park yesterday.

Tampa Bay gives the impression that they could start Bob Gibson in his prime and still find a way to lose. Fortunately for bettors, the Rays will start James Shields on Friday night to render that hypothetical a moot point.

On the whole, Shields has nice 2007 numbers. He’s suffered four losses in a row, however, and has himself to blame more than bad luck. Shields struck out 27 and walked only one batter in his 24 1/3 innings during his losing streak, but those numbers are tempered by the 19 runs on seven homers he allowed over that same span.

Compounding matters for Shields is that six Tampa relievers pitched at least a full inning yesterday in Boston, four of whom threw more than 30 pitches.

    Pick: Royals +109

San Francisco Giants at St. Louis Cardinals (-114, 9)

The Cards don’t hit left-handers well, something Giants starter Noah Lowry already knows. He allowed only four hits over seven innings back on April 19 to lead San Francisco to a 6-2 win as +103 home underdogs.

St. Louis hasn’t improved against southpaws since that loss. The Cardinals’ .680 OPS against left-handers is the second-lowest mark in the NL and they’ve managed only 13 home runs against lefties, tied with the Washington Nationals for the fewest in the majors. Any time your offense is mentioned in the same breath as the Nats, you know you’re struggling.

It won’t help that David Eckstein and Scott Spiezio, who have a combined .350 batting average against left-handed pitching this year, will miss Friday’s game.

San Francisco will face Mike Maroth, who will make his third start for the Cards. Maroth threw a gem in his first NL start but was hit hard in his second against the Cincinnati Reds, owners of MLB’s worst record.

    Pick: Giants +106

Baltimore Orioles at Texas Rangers (-101, 10)

Both the Orioles and the Rangers have drifted well out of the postseason picture in recent seasons despite owners willing to spend money. The problem with both clubs has often involved spending too much on bats and not enough on arms, making Friday’s pitching duel all the more unlikely.

Jeremy Guthrie has been a mini-sensation for the O’s, coming in from the bullpen in May only to find himself second in the AL in ERA as the break approaches. He’s made 11 starts since the end of April and has an ERA of 2.01 and a 0.76 WHIP in those starts.

Those numbers are far better than Texas starter Kameron Loe’s for 2007, but the towering Texas right-hander has been on fire lately. Loe’s 1.95 ERA over his last four starts has led to a four-game winning streak with the last two wins being road upsets over the Detroit Tigers (an 8-3 win as +196 underdogs on June 25) and the Boston Red Sox (a 2-1 win as +162 underdogs on July 1).

Texas gets the nod here for two reasons. Firstly, the Rangers went 6-3 over the O’s last season, 4-1 in Arlington. Secondly, Texas just took two of three from the AL West-leading Los Angeles Angels, meaning the Rangers haven’t lost any of their last six series. Hosting Baltimore should boost that streak to seven.

    Pick: Rangers -101

            Preview: New York at Detroit

GAME: New York Liberty (8-8) at Detroit Shock (11-4)
            DATE/TIME: Friday, July 06 - 7:30 PM ET
            SPREAD: Detroit -10.5 TOTAL: 140

The Detroit Shock aren't used to losing, especially at home against the New York Liberty.

The Shock look for their 10th straight home win against the Liberty when the teams continue their season series Friday night.

Coming off a 71-68 home loss to San Antonio on Sunday, Detroit (11-4) is in danger of dropping three straight regular-season games for the first time since July 13-17, 2005. A loss to New York (8-8) would give the Shock two straight home losses for the first time since a three-game slide also in July 2005.

The defending champion Shock, though, are 5-2 this season at the Palace of Auburn Hills, where they have dominated New York. The nine-game run against the Liberty there improved Detroit to 12-5 all-time at home against them.

Overall, the Shock have won 10 of their last 12 meetings with the Liberty, including a 67-57 victory at Madison Square Garden on June 8 in the teams' first meeting this season.

In the loss to the Silver Stars, Deanna Nolan scored 24 points and Cheryl Ford added nine and 12 rebounds.

Nolan, Ford and teammate Kara Braxton were among the WNBA All-Star starters announced Tuesday night. They will be joined by Indiana's Tamika Catchings and Anna DeForge for the Eastern Conference in the July 15 game in Washington.

Nolan, who leads Detroit with 16.3 points per game, had 17 in the first matchup with New York this season. Ford, meanwhile, has averaged 15.0 points and 10.7 rebounds in her last four games against the Liberty.

The Shock average 77.0 points per game, but have been held to 66.0 in their last two losses.

New York meanwhile, has lost eight of 11 and is coming off its worst defensive effort and most lopsided loss this year after falling 84-53 to Seattle on Sunday."

We're still in the thic k of things in the East and we've gotta bounce back," New York coach Pat Coyle said. "We have to fix things and then bounce back."

With a 3-5 record away from MSG this season, New York is tied with Washington for the worst road record in the Eastern Conference. The Liberty have been held less than 53 points in two games on this four-game road swing.

Loree Moore scored 10 to top the Liberty on Sunday. Shameka Christon, who leads the team with 12.1 points per game, was held to six on 3-for-15 shooting. She had a game-high 18 points against the Shock last month.

            Preview: Sacramento at Minnesota

GAME: Sacramento Monarchs (11-6) at Minnesota Lynx (5-12)
            DATE/TIME: Friday, July 06 - 8:00 PM ET
            SPREAD: Minnesota 3 TOTAL: 143

The Minnesota Lynx have the Western Conference's worst home record. Maybe a change in venue could improve their luck when they host the conference's best team.

The Lynx face the Sacramento Monarchs on Friday at the University of Minnesota's Williams Arena in their first home game outside of the Target Center.

The game was moved earlier this week to accommodate a Prince concert on Saturday.

Minnesota (5-12) has a 3-5 home record, having dropped its first four games at home before winning the next three. The Lynx, though, had that winning streak snapped Tuesday in a 95-79 defeat to Phoenix as they suffered their most lopsided home loss of the season.

Seimone Augustus had a team-high 16 points and eight rebounds, but her scoring average dropped to 22.2 per game - second in the league to Seattle's Lauren Jackson. Rookie Lindsey Harding added 12 points but Nicole Ohlde, second on the team with 12.5 points per game, was held to four while shooting 1-of-9 from the field.

Ohlde also had four of the 22 turnovers committed by the Lynx, who shot 33.8 percent after averaging 46.3 percent in their previous nine games.

Kathrin Ress established career highs in both points (10) and rebounds (six), and Eshaya Murphy scored nine as Minnesota's reserves contributed 30 points."

They (the bench) gave a valiant effort, so that's a positive," coach Don Zierden told the Lynx's official Web site. "But overall, when you get beat to the basketball the way we got beat, and you can't shoot, those are disappointing."

After winning four of five games, Minnesota has dropped two straight and now looks to avoid its first three-game skid since losing seven in a row to start the season."

We know that we can become a great team and are already surprising some people," guard Amber Jacobs said. "But we can't just turn it on - we have to come with the mindset to just outwork the other team."

Minnesota will have plenty of work to do against a Monarchs team that has won the last 10 series meetings, including four straight in Minneapolis. The Lynx have not defeated Sacramento since an 83-73 overtime win July 11, 2004.

The Monarchs (11-6) lead the all-time series 20-10 after winning both of this season's matchups, and they have not played since defeating the Lynx 78-68 at home on Sunday.

Rebekkah Brunson scored 17 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for her second straight double-double, and Nicole Powell added 16 points for the Monarchs.

The victory helped Sacramento avoid a third straight loss, though the team has lost its last two road games.

Augustus has averaged 26.4 points in five career games against the Monarchs, and had a game-high 22 points on Sunday.

The teams will close their season series July 29 at Sacramento.

            Preview: Seattle at Houston

GAME: Seattle Storm (9-7) at Houston Comets (4-12)
            DATE/TIME: Friday, July 06 - 8:30 PM ET
            SPREAD: Houston 1 TOTAL: 154.5

If the Seattle Storm are to win three straight games for the first time this season, they'll have to do so without the leading vote-getter for the upcoming All-Star game.

Seattle will be without Sue Bird when it meets the Houston Comets on Friday night to start a three-game road trip.

Bird, who led all players with nearly 129,000 votes for the July 15 All-Star game in Washington, will undergo arthroscopic surgery Friday to remove loose particles from her left knee. She is expected to miss about two weeks, but hopes to be ready for the final stretch run and playoffs and the September Olympic qualifying games with the U.S. national team.

"To be honest, maybe if I had nothing after this I would try and gut it out. But then (my doctor) said it could get worse,' said Bird, who averages 10.4 points and 5.0 assists. "Playing on it one extra week wasn't the end of the world. Playing on it another two and a half, three months, that could have been a problem.'

Bird scored 10 points and had 11 assists in Seattle's 90-71 home win over Los Angeles on Tuesday. Seattle (9-7) starts play in fourth place in the Western Conference, 1 1/2 games behind first-place Sacramento.

The Storm are 4-1 in their last five games with the lone loss being an 81-76 defeat on June 28 in Houston.

Lauren Jackson, who will make her sixth All-Star appearance, scored 23 points against the Sparks and should be more of a focal point with Bird out."

I don't want to play without her,' said Jackson who averages a league-leading 22.7 points. "She's my best mate."

Jackson scored 25 points in the loss to the Comets and is averaging 26.0 points in three games against Houston this season. The Storm lead the season series 2-1 heading into their final regular-season meeting.

Houston fell 92-75 to Phoenix on Saturday, but is 4-2 since a franchise-worst 0-10 start.

Roneeka Hodges had a season-high 17 points and leading scorer Tina Thompson added 16 for the Comets against the Mercury. Thompson, who averages 18.4 points, scored 20 against the Storm last week.

Houston (4-12) could have two new faces on the floor Friday after signing guards Tamecka Dixon and Erin Grant while releasing guard Tamara Moore and forward Tari Phillips this week.

Dixon, a free agent, was waived by Houston earlier in the year after starting 14 games for the Comets in 2006.

"I'm excited to be back with the team and to be able to play for Coach (Karleen) Thompson," said Dixon, who is averaging 10.3 points since entering the league in 1997. "I feel as if I'm starting anew."

Grant was re-signed after being waived on May 23 after scoring three points in three games with Houston.

            Preview: Sun at Mercury

GAME: Connecticut Sun (6-10) at Phoenix Mercury (10-7)
            DATE/TIME: Friday, July 06 - 10:00 PM ET
            SPREAD: Phoenix 6 TOTAL: 168.5

Diana Taurasi has returned to the Phoenix Mercury's lineup, but teammate Penny Taylor might be their biggest offensive threat right now.

Taylor and the Mercury host the Connecticut Sun on Friday, looking to extend their winning streak to a season-high four games.

Taylor has been the team's leading scorer in each of the last four games. She had 26 points in Tuesday's 95-79 win at Minnesota, scoring at least 23 for the fifth consecutive game. Taylor has averaged 25.6 points in that span after averaging 11.9 through the first 12 games of the season.

Her 3-pointer with 7:43 left on Tuesday gave Phoenix (10-7) an 84-56 lead, but the Mercury had to hold off a furious Minnesota rally that cut the lead to seven with 2:49 to play. Tangela Smith hit two free throws and Taylor's basket with 1:58 left helped the team stave off the comeback attempt.

Taurasi, the league's fourth-leading scorer at 19.2 points per game, returned to action Tuesday after being suspended the previous two games for inappropriate conduct toward game officials. She scored 15 points and tied a career high with nine assists, helping Phoenix notch its second three-game win streak of the season.

Taurasi also found out Tuesday she'll be making her third appearance and second start in the WNBA All-Star game. She received the second-most votes in the Western Conference behind Seattle's Sue Bird.

The Mercury play five of their next six games at home, where they are 5-3.

The Sun (6-10) are trying for back-to-back wins for the first time since beating the Mercury on June 2 and Houston on June 8. Connecticut snapped a three-game losing streak with a 72-67 win over the Indiana Fever last Friday.

Katie Douglas scored 14 of her 22 points in the fourth quarter, while Lindsay Whalen added 14 points and seven assists.

"Tonight was a gut check for this tam, to see our character and to see how we could fight through adversity," said Douglas, who hit two free throws with 5.5 seconds left to put Connecticut up by five. "We kept our composure and found a way to win."

The Sun went 14-of-16 from the free throw line in the final quarter and 21-of-23 for the game while Indiana finished 7-of-11.

The win was just Connecticut's second in 10 games.

"We still have a lot of work to do, but we got back to the free throw line tonight, kept our turnovers down, forced someone else into turnovers and we shared the ball a little bit," Mike Thibault said.

Friday's contest begins a four-game West Coast road trip for the Sun, who are 4-4 away from home.

This is the second meeting of the season between these teams. Connecticut won 76-67 on June 2 by holding Phoenix, the league's highest-scoring team at 85.9 points per game, to its lowest point total of the season. The Sun's Asjha Jones led all scorers with 24 points.

The Mercury are 5-2 at home against the Sun.
