    Six-pack for Friday

-- A's beat Mariners 3-2 Thursday in 2:06; Ichiro grounded into double play in 7th inning, lined into double play to end game. You don't see that every day.

-- How is John Maine not on the All-Star team? No way is Roy Oswalt having a better season than Maine.

-- Kei Igawa gave up five runs in five IP Thursday, he has to be one of the worst free agent signings ever.

-- Carlos Silva has started 17 times; Twins got shut out in five games, scored one run in two others; they're 7-3 if they give him more than one run to work with.

-- Devil Rays lost their last eleven games, outscored 69-30; if they switched to the Japanese League, would they even be the best team over there?

-- Tampa Bay is now 1-21 in its last 22 July road games.

Friday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but............

      13) My biggest pet peeve about All-Star Game is when setup guys make the team..........if a guy isn't good enough to start, and isn't good enough to close, then how the hell can he be an All-Star? Only 32 out of 250 AL players, and 32 out of 300 NL players make the All-Star team-- you're telling me a setup guy is one of the top 32 in either league?

      12) Red Sox formed an alliance with the Chiba Lotte Marines of the Japanese League (managed by Bobby Valentine) this week; it isn't about Marines being a Red Sox farm club, but it is about sharing ideas, and growing the game in Asia.

      11) It almost seems that teams are so obsessed with Asia and Latin America as talent sources; they're giving up on America as a source of baseball players. Then again, the money teams have so much more money than the small market teams that they can afford to burn some cash overseas. Whether it will be money well-spent remains to be seen.

      10) How do some kids spend their summer? My godson Tom is in Florida, playing in a 16-and-under baseball tournament at Disney World (where we are headed in two weeks for hoops) and I got a call today to inform me 15-year old Emily Bayly is having an excellent season playing for the Albany Capitals in womens' AAU basketball. She was named to all-tourney team at the Gym Rat Classic two weeks ago, being commended for getting the most out of her ability, the ultimate compliment.

      9) After some of the guys the Trailblazers have had in recent years, they have to be giddy that Greg Oden is good kid and already playing with Portland's summer league team. Oden is going to sell a lot of tickets at the Rose Garden.

      8) The Bucks want a dialogue with Yi Jianlian, who wants no part of Milwaukee; Yi's people want him to be traded to place more to their liking. Shouldn't the Bucks have prepared a little more before they drafted him? They look like amateurs.

      7) If I owned an NBA team and shelled out $60M for four yrs, it damn well would be for a better player than Vince Carter; he isn't reliable, having once admitted to tanking in Toronto due to his wanting to be traded out of there. Just great.

      6) Buffalo Bills just gave their punter $10M for three years; is it a wise thing to overpay for a punter? What does this say to your offense? If they do well enough, you don't have to punt that much. They let McGahee go and overpay for a punter?

      5) Remember the name Casey Wasserman; he owns an Arena Football team in LA, and will own an NFL team someday.

      4) Speaking of Arenaball, Chicago Rush have receiver named Bobby Sippio who has scored 53 touchdowns.

      This season.

      3) University of South Florida's football program got a boost when they signed a five-year deal to play Miami, with three of the five games in Tampa. Hurricanes must be eager to tap into the fertile Tampa/St Pete recruiting pool.

      2) How cool must it be to have your own bobblehead?

      1) How weird is it that Matsuzaka didn't make All-Star team, but Okajima did? Once again, he is just a setup man, hard to believe he is better than an ace starter, but I could be wrong.

Detroit’s Andrew Miller looks to bounce back from his worst start of the season, as the Minnesota Twins knocked him around for five earned runs and six hits over five innings. SLIGHT EDGE: RED SOX

Toronto’s Roy Halladay is a perfect 4-0 with a 3.33 ERA in nine career outings against Cleveland. He’s allowed just one home run over 54 innings against them. EDGE: BLUE JAYS & UNDER
Halladay posted a 4-1 record last month despite having an inflated 4.81 ERA. His strikeout numbers have fallen off over his last six starts, fanning just 20 in 38 2/3 innings. EDGE: OVER

New York’s Mike Pelfrey has pitched relatively well over his last four starts, allowing four earned runs or less in four consecutive starts. He pitched five solid innings against the best offense in baseball, holding the Philadelphia Phillies to two earned runs and four hits. SLIGHT EDGE: METS

The OVER is 10-1 in Rodriguez’s last 11 starts following a quality start in his last appearance.

Atlanta starter Buddy Carlyle has appeared in three games away from Turner Field, allowing just two earned runs and eight hits in 10 innings of work. SLIGHT EDGE: BRAVES
Carlyle has rebounded nicely after suffering through his roughest start of the season on June 20, surrendering just one earned run over his 10 innings. He’s fanned eight batters and walked just one over that span. SLIGHT EDGE: BRAVES

            Friday’s MLB betting notes

            Not so big Papi

Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz is struggling to find the kind of power with his bat that made him a huge part of the World Series winning team in 2004.

According to MLB.com, Big Papi has not crushed a ball over the wall at the compact Fenway Park since late April against the Yankees. In fact, he's without a home run in his last 46 at-bats, rapidly closing in on his longest dry spell since joining the Sox (69 at-bats).

Ortiz is known to be hampered by a right-quadriceps problem, but is adamant that his struggles are not due to injury.

"I’ve got to fight," Ortiz told the Boston Herald on Wednesday. "I don’t want people to think that I’m struggling right now for any kind of excuse. There are a lot of people in this room who are watching me to see how I do and see how I deal with the tough times."

The Red Sox start a three-game series against the Detroit Tigers on Friday with Julian Tavarez (5-6, 4.39 ERA) on the mound. The Tigers counter with Andrew Miller (3-2, 3.81 ERA).

            No decision

Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen is still refusing to name a starter for Game 2 of a doubleheader against the Twins on Friday. He has whittled it down, however, to a choice between reliever Nick Masset or Triple-A starter Gavin Floyd.

"We're waiting to see how we are going to use Masset," Guillen told MLB.com on Wednesday. "I'm leaning to him for one reason: I don't want to call someone up and send them down right away. That isn't fair."

Guillen told the website that Floyd is a pitcher he'd like to call up but that the time isn't right yet. The 24-year-old right-hander is 6-0 with a 2.16 ERA in his last eight starts for Triple-A Charlotte.

For the first game of the doubleheader, the White Sox send Jon Garland (6-5, 3.15 ERA) out to test his stuff against Minnesota’s Scott Barker (2-3, 4.98 ERA).

            Cubs catchers can’t hit

The Chicago Cubs recently traded catcher Michael Barrett to San Diego, but it might not have worked out to their benefit, according to reports in the Chicago Sun-Times. The Cubs got Rob Bowen in return, but he is hitless in 23 at-bats since a single in his first game with Chicago.

In fact, since Barrett left the club, both Cubs catchers have been in a slump. When Bowen’s numbers are combined with back-up catcher Koyie Hill’s, they have managed a batting average of just .104 since the trade.

"Those ruts are going to happen,'' Bowen told the Sun-Times after a batting session with manager Lou Piniella. ''I've only got 100 at-bats so far this year, so I'm still young in the season and still growing and coming into my own."

Bowen will be hoping to turn his offensive slump around when the Cubs open a three-game series at Pittsburgh on Friday. He'll be catching for Jason Marquis (6-4, 3.31 ERA) and the Pirates counter with Paul Maholm (4-11, 4.74 ERA).

            Mixed messages

Despite reports to the contrary earlier this week, St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Scott Spiezio has not been placed on the 15-day DL and is available to pinch-hit.

Spiezio is battling an infection in his left index finger, which hospitalized him at one point. Cards manager Tony La Russa told reporters on Tursday that Spiezio would go on the DL, but since decided to keep him active.

"He can be used if we have to," La Russa told MLB.com. "I think we can get by as long as he is available to do something."

The right fielder is batting .279 with 26 RBIs and three homers for the season and could feature as a pinch-hitter in Friday’s series opener against the Giants. That game features a pitching matchup between Mike Maroth (5-2, 5.08 ERA) and Noah Lowry (8-6, 3.46 ERA).

Edmonton (0-0-1) @ BC Lions (1-0) -- Defending champ BC has 20 starters back from title squad; they rallied from 15-10 deficit at halftime in Toronto to nip Argos 24-22 as they start defense of their title. Eskimos tied wild game vs Winnipeg last week, as they gained 510 yards and didn't win-- did OT tilt take lot out of them? Lions had six sacks, held Argos to 59 rushing yards last week. Edmonton allowed 543 yards on their home field.

                          MLB
                          Dunkel Index

                          Seattle at Oakland
Oakland's Dan Haren has been the best pitcher in the American League during the first half of the season and has gone 16 consecutive games without a loss. Seattle's Jeff Weaver was just the opposite, posting a putrid 14.32 ERA while losing his first six starts of the season. But since a month stint on the DL with shoulder tendinitis, Weaver has arguably been the best pitcher in the A.L. over the last few weeks as he has recorded a 2-0 record and 1.65 ERA in his last five starts (with Seattle going 4-1 in those games). Those numbers make the Mariners a decent road underdog pick (+210) tonight according to Dunkel, which has Seattle favored straight up by 1/2 a run. Dunkel Pick: Seattle (+210). Here are all of today's games.

                              Friday's streaking starting pitchers

                              Hot Pitchers

Kameron Loe (Texas Rangers) - The Rangers recent success began with Kameron Loe and tonight against the Orioles he will try to keep it going. Since returning from the minors, the right-hander has bounced back in a big way, winning his last four starts while recording a 1.95 ERA. Loe, who is 5-6 on the season, is 1-0 with a 1.50 ERA in four career relief appearances versus the Orioles.

Dan Haren (Oakland A's) - Haren will try to continue padding wallets tonight when he looks to extend the longest win streak in the majors. Haren is 10-2 with a 2.20 ERA so far this year and will try to avenge a loss to Seattle. Since the defeat on April 2, the right-hander is 10-0 with a 2.37 ERA, the longest win streak of his five-year career. Haren is 5-2 with a 2.54 ERA in eight career starts against the Mariners.

Kyle Kendrick (Philadelphia Phillies) - It is never easy pitching with pain, but that is what the Phillies starter is dealing with tonight when he takes the mound. Kendrick will try to overcome a right groin strain to win his fourth straight start against a streaking Colorado club. The Phillies have won all four of Kendrick's outings this season and he has not allowed more than four runs or worked fewer than six innings in any of them.

                              Cold Pitchers

Jamie Shields (Tampa Bay Devil Rays) - It is amazing how fast the wheels can fall off a promising season. Shields began the year going 6-0 in his first 13 starts, but is 0-4 in his last four. The good news for the D-Rays right-hander is he is facing a team that he has had recent success against. Shields has been sharp in two career starts versus the Royals, allowing two runs in 13 1/3 innings to earn a pair of wins.

Andy Pettitte (New York Yankees) - Pettitte is coming off his briefest start in more than four years after he was roughed up for eight runs before reaching the third inning on Saturday. The left-hander is 0-2 with an 8.80 ERA in his last three starts, giving up 16 runs and 26 hits. This will be the first time Pettitte will face the Angels since 2003. He has an 11-6 record in 20 career starts against them.

Mike Pelfrey (New York Mets) - Pelfrey will once again try for his first win of the season tonight against the Houston Astros. This year, Pelfrey has lost six straight starts since he failed to factor in the decision of his season debut on April 13. The right-hander has been one of New York's top pitching prospects since entering the league but has gone 0-7 with a 6.50 ERA in nine starts dating back to last season.
