Streaking Pitchers
Thursday, July 5
Hot
Ben Sheets (Milwaukee Brewers) - Sheets will try to win five straight starts for the first time in his career today against the underdog Pirates. The right-hander is 10-3 with a 3.19 ERA this season including a 9-1 run since May 1. He was selected as the NL Pitcher of the Month for June and was just selected to the All-Star team. Sheets has also been sharp against the Pirates, going 3-1 with a 1.83 ERA in his last six starts against them dating to 2004.
Brad Penny (Los Angeles Dodgers) - Penny is 10-1 with a 2.00 ERA this season and is a big reason why the Dodgers are fighting for first place. He has won his last five decisions, matching his career high for a single season and is a strong candidate to start for the NL in the All-Star game. The right-hander is 8-4 with a 4.77 ERA in 18 career starts against the Braves.
John Maine (New York Mets) - July has been a brutal month for the Mets and they will look to John Maine to stop the bleeding today. Maine is gunning for his second four-start win streak of the season and has a 1.61 ERA in his last three starts. The Mets right-hander has dominated the Astros, winning both his starts against them while allowing only two runs and six hits in 15 1/3 innings.
C.C. Sabathia (Cleveland Indians) - Sabathia leads the majors in wins and innings pitched this season and has won three games in a row. The left-hander is 12-2 with a 3.20 ERA in 2007 and has 116 strikeouts to just 17 walks. Sabathia is 7-1 with a 2.62 ERA, 58 strikeouts and seven walks over his last 10. The Cleveland ace is 12-7 in 22 career starts against Detroit including 2-0 so far this season.
Cold
Bronson Arroyo (Cincinnati Reds) - Arroyo actually pitched well in his last start but did not get the run support he needed for the win. That said, the Reds starter is 0-7 with a 6.55 ERA since his last victory on May 6. Maybe the luck will change tonight for the -119 favored Reds since Arroyo's last start against the Giants was a success. He threw a three-hitter and won 3-0 last September. Arroyo has even had success against Barry Bonds, keeping him hitless in five at-bats.
