    Streaking Pitchers

    Thursday, July 5

    Hot

Ben Sheets (Milwaukee Brewers) - Sheets will try to win five straight starts for the first time in his career today against the underdog Pirates. The right-hander is 10-3 with a 3.19 ERA this season including a 9-1 run since May 1. He was selected as the NL Pitcher of the Month for June and was just selected to the All-Star team. Sheets has also been sharp against the Pirates, going 3-1 with a 1.83 ERA in his last six starts against them dating to 2004.

Brad Penny (Los Angeles Dodgers) - Penny is 10-1 with a 2.00 ERA this season and is a big reason why the Dodgers are fighting for first place. He has won his last five decisions, matching his career high for a single season and is a strong candidate to start for the NL in the All-Star game. The right-hander is 8-4 with a 4.77 ERA in 18 career starts against the Braves.

John Maine (New York Mets) - July has been a brutal month for the Mets and they will look to John Maine to stop the bleeding today. Maine is gunning for his second four-start win streak of the season and has a 1.61 ERA in his last three starts. The Mets right-hander has dominated the Astros, winning both his starts against them while allowing only two runs and six hits in 15 1/3 innings.

C.C. Sabathia (Cleveland Indians) - Sabathia leads the majors in wins and innings pitched this season and has won three games in a row. The left-hander is 12-2 with a 3.20 ERA in 2007 and has 116 strikeouts to just 17 walks. Sabathia is 7-1 with a 2.62 ERA, 58 strikeouts and seven walks over his last 10. The Cleveland ace is 12-7 in 22 career starts against Detroit including 2-0 so far this season.

    Cold

Bronson Arroyo (Cincinnati Reds) - Arroyo actually pitched well in his last start but did not get the run support he needed for the win. That said, the Reds starter is 0-7 with a 6.55 ERA since his last victory on May 6. Maybe the luck will change tonight for the -119 favored Reds since Arroyo's last start against the Giants was a success. He threw a three-hitter and won 3-0 last September. Arroyo has even had success against Barry Bonds, keeping him hitless in five at-bats.

Lady luck: Tuesday's best WNBA bets

San Antonio Silver Stars at Washington Mystics (-1, 151 1/2)

Washington came so close to climbing out of the Eastern Conference basement when it played the Indiana Fever on Sunday, but when the Mystics went to the well down the stretch, it was dry.

"I can feel it on the court," guard Alana Beard told the Washington Post. "Sometimes I don't feel like I have my legs and you can see sometimes that we don't have that energy. We didn't really have it tonight."

The 5-11 Mystics fell short of their fourth straight win, using all of their energy to cut a nine-point third-quarter deficit. They got within three points of the Fever in the fourth quarter but ran out of gas to lose 69-62 as 1 ½-point home favorites.

Washington doesn’t have much time to recharge before facing another top-tear WNBA team on Tuesday. The San Antonio Silver Stars roll into town on the momentum of a big win over the Detroit Shock this past weekend. They were able to take a road victory as 6 ½-point underdogs despite the absence of injured starters Ruth Riley and Becky Hammon.

The Mystics interim head coach Tree Rollins dug six-players deep into his bench on Sunday in hopes of giving starters Beard and DeLisha Milton-Jones a rest but isn’t getting much production from his reserves this season.

        Pick: Silver Stars +1

Phoenix Mercury at Minnesota Lynx (-1, 168)

Phoenix is eyeing a run at the top spot in the Western Conference and getting starting small forward Cappie Pondexter back is big piece of that puzzle.

Pondexter returned to action in the Mercury’s 92-75 pounding of the Houston Comets this past Saturday after missing the previous three games with a strained groin. Pondexter has had two extra days to recover before Tuesday’s game in Minnesota.

"Cappie is our X factor," Phoenix coach Paul Westhead told the Houston Chronicle. "She does all the little things that get you over the hump. It's obviously really nice to have her back on the floor."

The second-year pro is averaging over 17 points per game this season, to go along with four assists and four rebounds a night. Pondexter scored 18 points against the Lynx on June 5 when Minnesota upset Phoenix at home as 12 ½-point underdogs.

        Pick: Mercury +1

Los Angeles Sparks at Seattle Storm (-10, 154 1/2)

After getting called out for their efforts by Michael Cooper last week, the Los Angeles Sparks once again let down their head coach in a devastating overtime loss to the Chicago Sky this past Sunday.

A late defensive lapse by the Sparks took the game into overtime and after battling back in the extra period. They failed to box out in the final seconds which allowed Chicago to grab a decisive rebound and run out the clock.

The loss could be twice as devastating if Temeka Johnson’s knee is re-injured. Johnson made her season debut on Sunday after sitting out the start of the year due to minor knee surgery but left with about three minutes remaining in regular time.

"My knee just buckled. It wasn't used to everything I was doing," Johnson told the Long Beach Press-Telegram. "It was causing me a little pain."

Los Angeles is already a bit lame with starting center Taj McWilliams-Franklin playing with tendonitis in her hamstring. The Sparks are still adjusting to life without Lisa Leslie (pregnant) and Chamique Holdsclaw, who abruptly retired from the WNBA last month.

        Pick: Storm -10
