    Six-pack for Wednesday

-- Joe Blanton had complete game win Tuesday, as manager Geren had tough decision, after Blanton walked Rios with two out to bring tying run to plate. Geren showed faith in Blanton, and that faith was rewarded with a 3-1 win.

-- Jack Cust gave A's insurance run in bottom of 8th, with a solo homer, after he had struck out his first three times up.

-- Kaz Matsui went 5-for-5 against his old team, as Rockies continued to roll at home, drilling Mets 11-3.

-- Royals have won seven of last nine games, allowing total of 22 runs; they led 10-0 in second inning Tuesday.

-- Umpire Barksdale blew call at first base that would have ended Phillies-Astros game in 9th inning. Closer Alfonseca got Lee to hit grounder with bags full and was doubled at first, but was incorrectly ruled safe at first. Charlie Manuel got tossed in ensuing argument, and game moved on.........

-- .........and on and on, until Hunter Pence hit Jose Mesa's first pitch of 13th into the Crawford Boxes, and Astros won 5-4, an extremely bitter defeat for Philadelphia. Barksdale is the home plate ump for Wednesday's Philly-Astro game.

Wednesday's List of 13: Random holiday thoughts..........

      13) Remember last week, when Bronx-Baltimore game was 8-6 in eighth inning, when it was stopped by rain? Under new set of rules, the four runs Bronx scored in top of 8th counted, as game will continue from that point on July 27. Under old rules game would have reverted back to end of 7th inning, and the Orioles would have won the game.

      12) Well, out in Vegas, the old rules still stand, and backers of the Orioles were paid off. At MGM, they said because game isn't being resumed for a month, they reverted back to end of the previous inning, and declared Baltimore tickets winners. It will be interesting to see if they revisit this policy in future.

      11) Rumor has the Knicks being interested in acquiring Ron Artest from the Kings; is there no end to the wackiness of the Isiah Thomas regime? How does this man keep his jobs?

      10) Last weekend was good one for obscure golfers; on PGA Tour, Brian Bateman won at Warwick Hills, after coming in as the 408th-ranked golfer in world. On Senior Tour, someone named Lon Nielsen, who quit the Tour in '83, and was 0-for-91 on the Senior Tour, finally broke through and won. Good for him-- Neilsen had been a club pro after quitting the Tour.

      9) The All-Star Game is being overshadowed by all the Home Run Derby stuff on Monday; survery of fans found that 61% of them preferred Monday's activities to Tuesday's. Making the All-Star Game count for something was just plain stupid, and it hasn't made a big dent with the fans.

      8) Trevor Hoffman's dad was an usher at Anaheim Stadium; he occasionally sang the National Anthem before Halo tilts.

      7) Roger Clemens has started five starts for Bronx; in those five games, Bronx bullpen has not yielded a run in the 12.1 IP they've worked behind him. Andy Sonnanstine has started n six games for Tampa Bay; the Rays' bullpen has pitched 13.1 innings behind him, and given up 21 runs. Not good.

      6) Rumors are strong in New York media that Don Imus will be returning to WFAN sometime this fall, after being fired in the spring, for making inappropriate remarks. Seems that CBS may have to finish paying off his contract anyway, and they are having trouble replacing him, so might as well bring him back. That seems to be the general consensus.

      5) That said, could be a busy fall for Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson, between Imus returning and the potential of the feds going after Michael Vick in the dogfighting matter. Their work is never done, is it?

      4) White Sox have lost eleven of last fourteen home games.

      3) Umpire Alfonso Marquez is the first Mexican-born umpire in the big leagues. You watch him work and never notice him, so he must be pretty good.

      2) Of the 25 US-trained players taken in NBA Draft last week, 14 of them played at least three years of college ball. At some point, the Spurs have to become the NBA's model franchise. They have lot of foreign players, and role players who played a lot of college ball (Finley, Horry, Barry), in short, guys that understand the game and have been coached in the past.

      1) Today is 4th of July, Independence Day. Our troops are all over the world, protecting that independence for us, and they ain't getting paid a whole lot to do it. We thank you, we pray for you, and we look forward to your safe arrival back home.

            Baseball Today - July 4

            SCOREBOARD Wednesday, July 4
Cleveland at Detroit (7:05 p.m. EDT).

Jake Westbrook and Kenny Rogers square off in a matchup of the top two teams in the AL Central.

            STARS

            Tuesday

-Brad Wilkerson, Rangers, hit three homers and had six RBIs to help Texas beat the Los Angeles Angels 8-3.

-Joe Blanton, Athletics, threw a four-hitter for his AL-leading third complete game and Oakland beat Toronto 3-1.

-Javier Vazquez, White Sox, gave up four hits in his 21st career complete game to lead the Chicago White Sox past Baltimore 5-1.

-Daisuke Matsuzaka, Red Sox, allowed four hits in eight scoreless innings and struck out nine and Boston defeated Tampa Bay 4-1.

-Chien-Ming Wang, Yankees, pitched four-hit ball for seven innings to lead the New York Yankees past Minnesota 8-0.

-Casey Blake, Indians, hit a go-ahead home run in the 11th inning to lift Cleveland over Detroit 5-4.

-Billy Butler, Royals, homered and drove in six runs in Kansas City's 17-3 rout of Seattle.

            CHASING AARON

Barry Bonds hit homer No. 751 in his first at-bat Tuesday night, a two-run shot that moved him within four of tying Hank Aaron's record during San Francisco's 7-3 loss to the Cincinnati Reds. Bonds' latest came in the city where Aaron hit No. 714 on opening day 1974, tying Babe Ruth's previous mark. That record-book homer landed at Riverfront Stadium, which was demolished in 2002.

            TRIPLE THREAT

Brad Wilkerson hit three home runs to lead Texas past the Los Angeles Angels 8-3 on Tuesday. He is the first AL player with a three-homer game this season. Alfonso Soriano of the Chicago Cubs and Carlos Lee of Houston have three-homer games in the NL.

            A-ROD A-OK

Alex Rodriguez played third base for the New York Yankees on Tuesday, one night after leaving the game with a strained left hamstring. The two-time MVP went 0-for-4 with a strikeout but looked comfortable in the field. Rodriquez was pulled after the sixth inning in the Yankees' 8-0 victory over the Twins.

            ROMP

Seattle's Ryan Feierabend allowed 10 runs in just 1 1-3 innings in his seventh major league start and Kansas City pounded the Mariners 17-3 on Tuesday. The 17 runs and 16 hits tied the Royals' season highs. It was the most runs the Mariners have allowed all year.

            STREAKS

Boston topped Tampa Bay 4-1 on Tuesday to deal the Devil Rays their ninth straight loss. ... Milwaukee lost 6-2 to Pittsburgh, but Kevin Mench hit a home run for the Brewers, who have now homered in 12 consecutive games... Cleveland topped Detroit 5-4 in 11 innings to win their sixth straight.

            SNAPPED

Julio Lugo hit a two-run single in the second inning of Boston's 4-1 win over Tampa Bay on Tuesday to snap an 0-for-33 skid - the longest for a Red Sox player since 1991. Lugo also singled in the seventh and was the only batter on either team with more than one hit.

            SPEAKING

''It's all about New York. New York is center stage and the place everyone is aware of and watches.'' - Rockies second baseman Kaz Matsui, on his team's success against the two New York teams. Colorado beat the Mets 11-3 on Tuesday to improve to 5-0 against the Mets and Yankees this season. The former Met Matsui had a career-best five hits in the win.

            July 4

1905 - The Philadelphia Athletics scored two runs in the 20th inning, giving Rube Waddell a 4-2 victory over Cy Young of the Boston Red Sox. Both pitchers went the distance. Young did not allow a walk.

1908 - George Wiltse of the New York Giants pitched a 10-inning, 1-0 no-hitter against the Philadelphia Phillies.

1912 - George Mullin of the Detroit Tigers celebrated his 32nd birthday by pitching a no-hitter over the St. Louis Browns.

1925 - Two of the great left-handers of their time - Herb Pennock of the Yankees and Lefty Grove of the Athletics - hooked up in a duel that New York won 1-0 in 15 innings. Pennock gave up four hits and walked none.

1939 - Jim Tabor of the Boston Red Sox hit three home runs, including two grand slams, in an 18-12 win over the Philadelphia Athletics in the second game of a doubleheader.

1976 - The Phillies' Tim McCarver lost a grand slam when he passed Garry Maddox on the basepaths. The Phillies still won 10-5 at Pittsburgh. 1983 - Dave Righetti of the New York Yankees pitched a 4-0 no-hitter against the Boston Red Sox at Yankee Stadium.

1984 - Phil Niekro of the New York Yankees struck out five Texas Rangers to become the ninth player to pass 3,000 strikeouts. No. 3,000 was Larry Parrish.

1984 - The New York Mets beat the Braves 16-13 in 19 innings at Atlanta. The game went until just before 4 a.m. on July 5, and was followed by a fireworks display for the 10,000 still left in the stands. The Braves tied the score 13-13 on a homer by pitcher Rick Camp in the 18th inning.

2000 - St. Louis' Keith McDonald homered in his first major league at-bat as the Cardinals defeated Cincinnati 14-3.

2006 - Victor Martinez went 5-for-6 and Jhonny Peralta and Travis Hafner each hit two of Cleveland's six home runs, powering the Indians to a 19-1 rout of New York. The win was Cleveland's largest at home in more than 56 years, since a 21-2 victory over the Philadelphia Athletics on June 18, 1950.

2006 - Jose Contreras tossed 6 2-3 scoreless innings to win his 17th straight decision and lead the White Sox to a 13-0 victory over Baltimore.

            Today's birthday: Brendan Donnelly, 36.

              Tampa Bay at Boston
The hapless Devil Rays ran their losing streak to nine straight last night after getting shut down by Daisuke Matsuzaka (4-1). Streaking Pitchers

                  Wednesday, July 4

                  Hot Pitchers

Kenny Rogers (Detroit Tigers) - Rogers has not missed a beat since returning to action after three months off. Tigers backers will be hoping for another strong performance tonight against the Cleveland Indians at Comerica Park. The crafty left-hander has won his first two starts this season and has only allowed one run in the process. Rogers has won his last eight decisions when pitching after a Tigers loss, and will have the chance to extend that streak tonight. The 42-year-old was 3-2 against the Tribe last season.

Johan Santana (Minnesota Twins) - The two-time Cy Young Award winner is putting together his best stretch of the season, going 3-0 with a 1.29 ERA in his last four outings. The good news gets even better for those betting on the Twins tonight because Santana has never lost a regular season game to the New York Yankees. The left-hander has won three straight starts on the road, where he's 6-2 in nine starts with a 1.77 ERA - the second-best mark in the AL.

Chris Young (San Diego Padres) - Tonight is a big game for the Padres starter because he still has a chance to make the NL All-Star team. Despite having a 8-3 record with the second-best ERA in the league, Young was left off the All-Star squad. The right-hander hasn't lost since May 12, going 4-0 with a 1.25 ERA in his last eight starts. Padres backers should also know that Young owns the best home ERA in baseball at 0.94 and hasn't allowed a homer in 48 innings at Petco Park this year.

                  Cold Pitchers

Josh Johnson (Florida Marlins) - Johnson is winless in his last six outings as he seeks his first victory since Aug. 28. He has a record of 0-3 with a huge 10.97 ERA this season and continues to work himself back into shape after missing the first 10 weeks due to an irritated ulnar nerve in his right elbow. This will be the right-hander's first starting appearance against the Padres.

Matt Cain (San Francisco Giants) - It does not look promising for the Giants to snap their road skid tonight as they send Matt Cain to the mound. The right-hander is 2-9 with a 3.38 ERA this season but not all of the blame can be pinned on him. Cain is 0-6 with a 3.57 ERA and has received only 12 runs of support since his last win May 13 at Colorado. If the Giants don't put some runs on the board it will be hard for Cain to turn this cold streak around.

Joe Kennedy (Oakland A's) - Joe Kennedy seems to have a luxury that a lot of starting pitchers don't have; he is part of the most dominating pitching staff in the AL. So despite his cold stretch, it is not the end of the world. Kennedy will try to make a positive impression on his squad tonight and get his season back on track against the Toronto Blue Jays. The lefty is 0-2 with a 6.30 ERA in four starts since his last win on June 6. Some good news for bettors is Kennedy has the seventh-best home ERA in the AL.

                    Hot Lines

                    Wednesday, July 4

Minnesota Twins at New York Yankees (+110, 8)

There are golden rules like don’t spit into the wind, don’t pull on Superman’s cape, and don’t miss out on Johan Santana when he’s priced like he is today.

With the Yankees outscoring the Twins 13-1 in the first two games of the series, oddsmakers have dropped the number on the reigning Cy Young winner to -118. Santana is over his slow start to the year, winning his last three appearances in which he allowed only two earned runs over 21 innings.

The crafty southpaw is lights-out on the road, holding batters to a .189 average and posting an ERA under 2.00. Santana is also known for his dominance against New York, striking out 38 batters in the last 44 2/3 innings versus the Yankees with a 2.80 ERA.

                    Pick: Twins -118

Milwaukee Brewers at Pittsburgh Pirates (-110, 8 ½)

If you look at ***********’s MLB money pitchers you’ll see Milwaukee’s Claudio Vargas at the top. The Brewers are 12-2 this season when Vargas takes the mound, including wins in his last six starts. The 6-foot-3 righty is 6-1 this season with a 4.29 ERA.

Milwaukee’s run production has been up and down recently but when Vargas is on the bump the Brew Crew come alive, giving their pitcher an average of six runs of support in each of his 14 starts.

Vargas has handled the Bucs with ease this year. He is 2-0 with an ERA under 1.00 in two starts versus Pittsburgh.

                    Pick: Brewers +102

Atlanta Braves at Los Angeles Dodgers (-113, 8 ½)

Dodgers pitcher Mark Hendrickson returns to the starting rotation today after being demoted to the bullpen over a month ago.

While the relief stint helped improve Hendrickson’s confidence as well as drop his ERA, he hasn’t pitched more than three innings since May 31. As a reliever, the lefty posted a 2.84 ERA over 25 1/3 innings. But as a starter, Hendrickson was 2-3 with three no-decisions and a 4.81 ERA. Los Angeles is 7-12 in the 19 games in which Hendrickson made an appearance this season.

He has only faced Atlanta once during his career. While Hendrickson was with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays last season he allowed four runs in eight innings during a 4-1 loss to the Braves.

                    Pick: Braves +105
