    Six-pack for Monday

-- Jason Marquis recovered from being hit with a broken bat to beat the Brewers; at some point, a pitcher is going to get hurt with the jagged edge of one of these shattered bats.

-- Kameron Loe won his fourth start in row as Texas won a series at Fenway; they've played better without Teixeira.

-- Cincinnati's big pitching prospect, Homer Bailey, has an ERA of 8.10 after four starts. A pitcher named Homer?

-- As bad as Phillies' pitching is, this week's road trip, going to Houston and Colorado, ain't going to help things any.

-- Jeff Weaver won pitcher's duel with Marcum; it was third strong start in row for Weaver, after horrible start to year.

-- If Mariners win Wild Card and play Red Sox in first round of playoffs, keep in mind that Boston lost their last eight in a row at Safeco Field, after getting swept earlier this week.

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend.........

      13) "Managers are hired to be fired." Have a couple of losing seasons, and the vultures come after you, just ask Joe Torre, who hasn't even had a losing season in the Bronx. Burnout is a possibility for Mike Hargrove; if you aren't excited during a winning streak like Seattle is on, then it surely is time to go.

      12) Has any manager ever quit during an eight-game winning streak? Hargrove's resignation is strange, since he had had a couple losing seasons, was under gun to win this year, but was doing just that. He says its not the people he works for or with, it isn't his family, it is just time to go.

      11) Maybe he was tired of criticism the last couple of years, but wanted to quit rather than be fired, so with the Mariners rolling, he took the opportunity to get out on his own terms. He says there is no reason for his resignation, other than he was less passionate than before. Managing is a tough job, a lot tougher when you lose; fans like ourselves have no idea of the pressure these guys put themselves under.

Elsewhere in the world of sports, and other places.............
      10) Reds had two high school baseball coaches in TV booth Saturday night; you don't see that much in other cities. They also have lot of chili commercials on Reds' games. I've never been a big chili fan, but it is a big thing in the Queen City.

      9) Just heard that Cincinnati fired Jerry Narron; it must be his fault a team that plays in bandbox hired four starting pitchers who throw more fly balls than ground balls. Colorado is little better because they've got pitchers who throw ground balls; you'd think the Reds would have figured that out.

      8) Reds last made playoffs with Davey Johnson in 1995, same as Orioles, who last made playoffs with Johnson in '97. Why does Johnson not have a managing job? Do owners not like to win? Why wouldn't the Devil Rays hire him?

      7) Mets' pitching staff took couple of hits this weekend; two starting pitchers are now hurt, with Sosa pulling hamstring on the bases Saturday, and Perez begging out of Sunday's start with a stiff back. Mets don't have starter for Tuesday night's game in Colorado, at this point.

      6) New traffic law in Virginia: the civil penalty for speeding, if you're going 20+ miles over speed limit, is now $1,050, plus all various court costs and add-ons. That seems little excessive.

      5) Randy Hundley caught 160 games for the '68 Cubs, a team that didn't play any night games at home. Leo Durocher was manager of that team, and is in the Hall of Fame, but what in the name of Pete was he thinking about? Playing a catcher in 160 games has to shorten his career, wouldn't you think? By the way, Hundley hit a whopping .226 that season.

      4) The '68 Cubs finished 84-78, third in National League. One of the pitchers on that team was Angel GM Bill Stoneman-- it was the next season that divisional play came into being and Cubs led NL East for most of season, before losing to Mets.

      3) Barry Bonds' election as starter to All-Star game saves the powers-that-be a huge decision; whether to put him on team as a sub, or as honorary selection. Giants aren't having very good season, so Bonds may still be their best player, and the game is in San Francisco, but there have to be lot of people in baseball circles who don't think Bonds belongs in the game.

      2) Guess this means Hank Aaron won't be at All-Star Game.

      1) One last thought on major league managers; there are only thirty jobs like that in the world; it is so difficult to get one, it is more difficult to keep one. To give one up voluntarily, in a winning season-- there had to be a very strong reason for it. Whatever Mike Hargrove's reasons, we wish him well.

              Monday, July 2

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
              Tips and Trends
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Brewers at Pittsburgh Pirates (7:05 PM ET)
Milwaukee won four of its first 10 games in June, a stretch that was capped by Justin Verlander’s no-hitter against them on June 12. After that, however, the Brewers batted .304 and posted a 3.68 team ERA to win 13 of their next 16 games. EDGE: BREWERS
Pittsburgh has won 11 of its last 15 home games against Milwaukee, including seven of 10 last year. The Pirates, though, have been outscored 38-19 in losing five of six games against the Brewers this season – all in Milwaukee. SLIGHT EDGE: PIRATES
Brewers starter Jeff Suppan is 9-3 with a 3.90 ERA in 16 career starts against the Pirates, including a 2-0 record against them this season. EDGE: BREWERS
The Pirates counter with right-hander John Van Benschoten, who is still looking for his first major league win since 2004. He didn’t get a decision in his third start of the year on Wednesday, when he held Florida to two runs and three hits in four innings of the Pirates’ 7-5, 10-inning win. SLIGHT EDGE: BREWERS
The UNDER is 6-2 in the last eight meetings in Pittsburgh.

Minnesota Twins at New York Yankees (ESPN | 7:05 PM ET)
Minnesota’s Boof Bonser picked up a loss in his only career start against New York, allowing six runs and six hits in 4 1/3 innings. SLIGHT EDGE: YANKEES
Bonser was hammered in June, posting a dismal 1-3 record and 6.91 ERA in five starts. He allowed 39 hits in just 28 2/3 innings of work. EDGE: YANKEES
Yankees right-hander Roger Clemens is 16-13 with a 2.96 ERA in 35 career starts against the Twins. SLIGHT EDGE: YANKEES
New York has lost four straight games that Clemens has appeared in, as the offense has failed to score more than three runs in any game over that span. EDGE: TWINS & UNDER
The UNDER is 7-1-1 in Clemens’ last nine starts versus the Twins.

Philadelphia Phillies at Houston Astros ( 8:05 PM ET)
Philadelphia left-hander Jamie Moyer was 1-3 with a 6.69 ERA in six starts May 14-June 10, but is 2-0 with a 2.37 ERA in his last three outings- all quality starts. SLIGHT EDGE: PHILLIES
Moyer is 4-3 with a 3.64 ERA in 10 career games – nine starts – against the Astros, but he hasn’t faced them since 2002. SLIGHT EDGE: PHILLIES
If the Phillies’ recent history against the Astros is any indication, Moyer could get plenty of run support on Monday. The Phillies scored 25 runs while batting .381 to win two of three games against the Astros in April. EDGE: OVER
Houston has outscored opponents 53-26 in winning six of its last seven games at Minute Maid Park. Astros pitchers have posted a 3.79 ERA at home this season, compared to their NL-worst 5.56 road ERA. EDGE: ASTROS
Astros starter Woody Williams is 3-6 with a 5.32 ERA in 11 career starts against the Phillies. He was tagged for six runs in 5 1/3 innings against them to suffer the loss in a 8-5 defeat April 14. EDGE: PHILLIES
The UNDER is 4-1-1 in the last six meetings in Houston.

Baltimore Orioles at Chicago White Sox (8:11 PM ET)
The White Sox were just 10-18 in June, but starter Mark Buehrle was 3-2 with a 2.75 ERA. SLIGHT EDGE: WHITE SOX
Buehrle is 4-1 with a 2.54 ERA in seven career starts against the Orioles and has given up only four runs – three earned – over 20 2/3 innings while winning his last three starts against them. EDGE: WHITE SOX
After dropping his 2007 road debut on April 2 to Minnesota, Baltimore’s Erik Bedard has gone 4-0 with a 3.42 ERA in eight road starts and has allowed three runs or less in six of them. EDGE: ORIOLES
Bedard has won his last two starts in Chicago’s AL ballpark and is 2-2 with a 3.86 ERA in five career starts overall against the White Sox. SLIGHT EDGE: ORIOLES
The OVER is 4-0 in the last four meetings.

New York Mets at Colorado Rockies (9:05 PM ET)
New York’s Tom Glavine has won two straight outings after going 0-4 in his previous five. He worked on his mechanics and tempo after giving up seven runs in four innings against the Yankees on June 14 and has now allowed one run and seven hits in his past 14 innings. EDGE: METS
Glavine is 11-5 with a 2.88 ERA in 27 starts against the Rockies, but he hasn’t faced them in two years. Colorado, however, is 7-14 against left-handed starters this season and is back home after a 1-9 road trip. EDGE: METS
The Rockies will counter with Jason Hirsch, who is 0-1 with a 9.20 ERA in his last three starts, allowing seven home runs in that span. EDGE: METS
New York won two of three games against Colorado at Shea Stadium from April 23-25 and has won 20 of the last 26 meetings between the teams. BIG EDGE: METS
The Mets are 0-4 in their last four games versus the NL West.

Florida Marlins at San Diego Padres (10:05 PM ET)
San Diego has lost five of David Wells’ last six home starts. EDGE: MARLINS
Wells is 1-1 with a 4.19 ERA in three career regular-season starts versus the Marlins, including a no-decision on May 5 when he gave up three runs over 5 1/3 innings in a 7-6, 12-inning victory. SLIGHT EDGE: PADRES
Florida’s Sergio Mitre allowed just one run and four hits over six innings of work in his last start against San Diego. He’s 1-2 with a 5.56 ERA in four career outings versus the Padres. SLIGHT EDGE: PADRES
After going three straight games without giving up an earned run, Mitre has posted a 6.27 ERA over his last three starts, allowing opponents to hit .351. EDGE: OVER
The UNDER is 7-1 in the Padres last eight overall.

Atlanta Braves at Los Angeles Dodgers (10:10 PM ET)
Braves right-hander John Smoltz tossed seven shutout innings against the Dodgers in his last start against them and is 16-13 with a 2.81 ERA in 46 career outings against them. EDGE: BRAVES
Smoltz is a solid 4-1 with a 3.78 ERA in eight road starts this season. He’s walked just nine batters and fanned 44 in 47 2/3 innings away from Turner Field. EDGE: BRAVES
Los Angeles starter Derek Lowe is a disappointing 2-3 with a 3.88 ERA in 14 career outings against Atlanta. SLIGHT EDGE: BRAVES
Lowe is coming off an outstanding June, posting a 3-2 record and 2.43 ERA in five June starts. EDGE: DODGERS
The OVER is 16-5 in the last 21 meetings.

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                Monday’s MLB betting notes

                Phasing Biggio out?

Craig Biggio’s 3,000th hit was met with huge celebrations and fanfare in Houston, but it may also signal the winding down of the 41-year-old’s career.

According to reports in the Houston Chronicle, 27-year-old Chris Burke will now get more time in the lineup. Biggio is likely to play the first game of each series and then sit out the others.

The Chronicle also states that they expect the veteran second baseman to announce his retirement after the All-Star break when he's due to have talks with team manager Phil Garner about his future.

Biggio is batting .251 with five homers and 27 RBIs for the season. He's likely to start Monday’s series opener against the Philadelphia Phillies, with Jamie Moyer (7-5, 4.15 ERA) and Woody Williams (3-10, 5.58 ERA) set to battle it out on the mound. Houston is a +101 underdog to take the game.

                Ray’s pitchers not to blame

It’s was a frustrating week for the Tampa Bay Devil Ray’s pitching staff. They struck out 59 batters between Monday and Saturday, which is 17 more than the nearest major league club.

So how many games did they win in that six-game stretch? None.

MLB.com reports that that statistic makes them the first team in 35 years to be swept over four games while managing 10 or more strikeouts in each game.

The Rays are in desperate need of offense. In three of their six losses this week they managed just one run. They ranked 10th in the AL in batting over the past week, posting a .227 batting average with 25 runs scored on 53 hits.

On Monday the Rays close out a four-game series against the Cleveland Indians, with James Shields (6-3, 3.81 ERA) set to test his stuff against Cliff Lee (4-4, 5.37 ERA). The Indians are –201 favorites with the total set at 9½.

Bad week for AL East’s big-hitters

It's not just Tampa Bay that's struggling at the plate in the AL East. The New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox are failing offensively as well.

The Sox have lost four of their last six games, posting a .271 average with 22 RBIs and just three homers. The only team with a worse record in the AL over the past week is the Yankees. Through Saturday, New York had a batting average of .181 for the week and managed just six runs, one homer, in 155 at-bats. Not surprisingly, the Yanks lost five of their six games over that period.

New York starts a three-game series against the Twins on Monday, the same day the Red Sox close out a four-game stretch against the Texas Rangers.

                Morneau back at first

The Minnesota Twins have been easing Justin Morneau back into the lineup over the past few days as he recovers from a bruised lung suffered over a week ago.

The reigning AL MVP was used as a designated hitter in the weekend series against the Detroit Tigers, but MLB.com reports he will return to first base in the next few days.

That means Morneau should be back at first for the Twins' three-game series against the Yankees, which starts Monday. Morneau’s swing has slowly improved during his time as DH this week and he managed three hits in five at-bats Friday.

The Canadian-born star is batting .280 with 20 home runs and 61 RBIs for the season. Boof Bonser (5-4, 4.65 ERA) will take the mound Monday to face Roger Clemens (1-3, 5.32 ERA). The Yankees are –178 favorites with the total set at 9½.

                  ALL-STARS

Not only is Barry Bonds going to the All-Star game in his home ballpark, he'll be in the starting lineup. The San Francisco Giants star overcame a 119,000-vote deficit in the final days of balloting and finished 123,000 ahead of the Chicago Cubs' Alfonso Soriano on Sunday to claim the third and final starting outfield spot for the National League. The Boston Red Sox and AL champion Detroit Tigers led all teams with five players selected, while the Mets will send three starters (Carlos Beltran, Jose Reyes, David Wright). Alex Rodriguez, with 3.89 million votes, led fan voting for the first time.

                  HARGROVE RESIGNS

Mike Hargrove resigned as manager of the Seattle Mariners on Sunday, saying his ''passion has begun to fade'' for baseball even though his team is the hottest club in the majors, having won their last seven games. Hargrove, who managed Sunday's 2-1 win over Toronto, will be succeeded by John McLaren, his bench coach. McLaren's first game will be Monday against Kansas City.

                  FIRED

Manager Jerry Narron was fired Sunday night by the Cincinnati Reds, who raised their payroll and their expectations in the offseason only to find themselves with the worst record in the major leagues. The move came a few hours after an 11-7 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals that left the Reds at 31-51, the worst record in the majors. Advance scout Pete Mackanin was chosen interim manager.

                  BANNER DAY

Josh Willingham had a career-best five hits, including a game-ending single in the 10th inning that gave the Florida Marlins a 6-5 victory over the Atlanta Braves on Sunday. Miguel Cabrera singled to start the 10th and advanced when Rafael Soriano (2-1) threw wildly to second for an error after fielding Jason Wood's bunt. Brett Carroll then ran for Cabrera. Willingham lined Soriano's 1-0 pitch down the left-field line to score Carroll from second.

                  SNAPPED

The Mets four-game winning streak came to an end after New York fell to Philadelphia 5-3 on Sunday. ... Atlanta's five-game winning streak stopped with a 6-5 loss to Florida. ... Mike Bacisk won for the first time since May 24 in Washington's 3-2 victory over Pittsburgh. Bacsik had lost five in a row.

                  STREAKS

Joe Borowski worked a perfect ninth to earn his 12th straight save and send the Devil Rays to their seventh straight loss in Cleveland's 3-1 win over Tampa Bay Sunday. ... Corey Hart extended his hitting streak to 17 games in Milwaukee's 5-1 loss to Chicago. ... Dan Haren (10-2) pitched 5 1-3 innings to win his career-best 10th straight decision in Oakland's 11-5 win over the New York Yankees. ... Chone Figgins extended his hitting streak to 13 games in the Angels 4-3 win against Baltimore.

                  SPEAKING

''I've daily challenged my players to give me the best that they've got, 100 percent of what they've got that day - physically and mentally. And they've done that. Without fail, they've done that. ... I have never had to work at getting that level myself - ever - until recently. I've found that I've had to work harder in making that same commitment to my bosses, to my players and to my coaches. And that's not right.'' - Mike Hargrove, who resigned as manager of the Seattle Mariners on Sunday, saying his ''passion has begun to fade'' for baseball even though his team is the hottest club in the majors, having won their last seven games.

                      Monday, July 2

                      HOT

Felix Hernandez (Seattle Mariners) - Hernandez's numbers aren't that impressive, but bettors have been able to overlook his stats because he has been earning them cash. Seattle has won four of the last five times he has started and his team from the Pacific Northwest is riding an eight-game winning streak overall. The Mariners are -115 favorites in Kansas City in what will mark the debut of new manager John McLaren.

Mark Buehrle (Chicago White Sox) - There are reports that the underachieving Pale Hose are close to re-signing Buehrle. That's good news for ChiSox backers because he's been one of the few bright spots on the South Side of Chicago recently. The lefty has pitched at least seven innings in his last four outings, allowing three runs or less each time. Chicago's record in those contests is 3-1 and under bettors have cashed in every time. Tonight's total is set at eight runs and the Sox and Orioles are both listed at -104.

                      COLD

Boof Bonser (Minnesota Twins) - Many baseball enthusiasts refer to Bonser as the player with the best name in the game today. But when it comes to betting on Bonser, it's a different story. He ranks as the 87th best money starter in the majors and Minnesota has only cashed in once during his last four appearances. The Twins travel to New York to take on the Yankees as +170 underdogs. Bonser's opponent hasn't been earning any money lately either. The Yanks have lost the last three times Roger Clemens has started, which includes two shutouts. Books are overpricing the Rocket at -178 tonight.

Andy Sonnanstine (Tampa Bay Devil Rays) - The rookie right-hander has made five starts for the Rays this season and his team's record in those contests is 1-4. He's lost three straight appearances, allowing 13 runs on 22 hits in the process. Tampa wraps up its series in Cleveland tonight as a +185 underdog.

Seattle Mariners at Kansas City Royals (+107, 8 ½)

There are letdown spots and then there’s the Seattle Mariners’ game in Kansas City today.

In the midst of the team’s most successful run of the season, manager Mike Hargrove’s sudden resignation has made Monday’s opponent an afterthought. The lowly Royals and former Mariner Gil Meche will take advantage of Seattle’s inner turmoil, trying to find the stride that led them to five straight wins last week.

Meche, who is heading to the All-Star Game next Monday, has a 3.28 ERA and has given up three or fewer runs in 12 of his 17 starts this season. The righty has split games against his former club this year, pitching great on April 28 but struggling in his most recent appearance against Seattle.

                        Pick: Royals +107

Baltimore Orioles at Chicago White Sox (-104, 8)

It seems no number of wins can quiet the trade rumors buzzing around the Chicago White Sox. The ChiSox have taken six of their last seven games with the shadow of an all out firesale looming overhead.

Monday’s starter Mark Buehrle could once again be pitching his final game for Chicago. The left-hander has been mentioned in trade talks with many big money markets but hasn’t let his undecided future impact his efforts on the mound.

"You know what's going to happen (at the start of the year), but when it actually hits you, it's a little more stressful," Buehrle told the Chicago Tribune. "You think about it a little bit more. I'm an even-keel guy and don't let that stuff bother me. But it's in the back of my mind. It doesn't affect the way I pitch and the way I do my job."

Buehrle pitched a solid seven innings last Wednesday against the Devil Rays, striking out six while allowing only two earned runs. The White Sox are 10-5 in Buehrle’s 15 starts this season. Buehrle is 3-1 with a 1.80 ERA in his last four starts and has a 4-1 record with a 2.26 career ERA versus the Orioles.

                        Pick: White Sox -104

New York Mets at Colorado Rockies (+111, 10)

The New York Mets closed out a dismal June with an 8-2 run to close out the month.

The catalysts for this turn around are actually two of the main reasons why the team struggled last month. Slugger Carlos Beltran and Carlos Delgado, who hit a combined .229 with only 11 home runs in June, hit seven dingers between them against the Phillies this past weekend.

Last year, New York closed its schedule before the All-Star break with a 9-1 road trip. This season the Mets finish the same stretch with 11 games away from Shea Stadium, starting the road swing 3-1 against Philadelphia.

                        Pick: Mets -119

                          Minnesota at NY Yankees
The Yankees have lost nine of their last 12 and will turn to Roger Clemens tonight to turn it around. But after winning his first start for New York, Clemens has lost his last three while posting a 5.40 ERA. Minnesota comes in playing well despite a 1-0 loss at Detroit last night. Overall the Twins have won eight of their last 12, including six of their last eight on the road. The Twins look like a good underdog pick (+185) according to Dunkel, which has Minnesota favored straight up by 1 1/2. Dunkel Pick: Minnesota (+185). Here are all of today's games.
