    Six-pack for Saturday

-- Barry Bonds hit his 750th homer in a huge spot Friday, as he tied game 3-3 in bottom of 8th. But Miguel Montero hit his fifth career homer to give Arizona the win in 10 innings.

-- Three 2-1 games in AL Friday, with home side winning all three. Highly unusual.

-- Awful day for Phillies Friday, losing twinbill to Mets, and they have to send a rookie out for big league debut in their next game Saturday. Phillies simply lack pitching depth.

-- Chone Figgins is on fire, and has his average up to .322, after a horrible start marred by two broken fingers.

-- Dodgers stole five bases off Chris Young, but comeback vs Padre bullpen fell just short, as San Diego won 7-6.

-- Brewers scored five in top of first, never scored again and blew game in bottom of 9th, as Cubs got to .500, winning its 7th game in row, creeping closer to Brewers in NL Central.

Saturday's List of 13: Rambling on a summer Saturday

      13) Colorado is now 0-8 on this road trip, as Fuentes blew his fourth save in eight days. Loretta hit walk-off two-run tater to give Astros second straight comeback win.

      12) Joey Gathright was a .251 career hitter in three seasons in big leagues, mostly with Devil Rays, but is batting .352 so far this season, for the Royals. Some things defy explanation.

      11) I was surprised to see that Matt Stairs has 232 home runs in his 15-year career, much of which has been spent as a part-timer. He looks like a softball player, but has had solid career.

      10) Pirate fans have organized a walkout during third inning of Saturday's game, but TV stations aren't going to show it, so no one across country is going to know about it. Fans are protesting Buccos' fifteenth straight losing season, and fact that Milwaukee, which has losing streak just as long, is now in first place, can't make Pirate fans any happier.

      9) Bonds hit his 750th career homer off Livan Hernandez, the same guy he hit his fourth career home run off of.

      8) Ryan Klesko hit 44th homer into McCovey Cove Friday, as Giants lost to Arizona in extra frames. San Francisco has team with young pitching, old position players, but if they dump a declining Barry Bonds after season, will they have enough $$ to go after Alex Rodriguez next winter?

      7) Awful outing for Cubs' Rich Hill Friday; he gave up five in first inning, and lasted only three innings, facing 18 batters, throwing 92 pitches, 5.11 per hitter, a ridiculously high figure.

      6) Aubrey Huff is just third Oriole to hit for cycle, first to do it in Baltimore; Brooks Robinson, Cal Ripken are other two O's who have hit for the cycle.

      5) Milton Bradley got traded for second time in week, as San Diego ignored common sense and dealt a minor league hurler to the A's for the oft-injured Bradley. Good luck, people.

      4) They drew 17,181 in Miami for a division rivalry game with the Braves; they drew 10,711 in Sacramento for Friday night Fresno-Sacramento game in Pacific Coast League.

      3) San Diego has played most one-run games in majors so far this season (14-16); Toronto is next (14-14).

      2) Japanese eating champion Kobiyashi is doubtful for world hot dog eating championship Wednesday in Brooklyn, as he has an injured jaw, a terrible injury for a competitive eater. In a dog-eat-dog world that is weiner wolfing, compassion and sympathy are in short supply. Joey Chestnut is favored to be the new world champion of hot dog eating.

      1) McGowan of Blue Jays had no-hitter broken up Sunday in 9th inning; in start before and start after that gem, he gave up a total of 13 earned runs in 6.2 innings pitched. Weird.

        Baseball - Tips & Trends

        Tips and Trends
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Athletics at New York Yankees (1:05 PM ET)
Oakland right-hander Chad Gaudin has appeared in eight games as a reliever against the Yankees, allowing four earned runs and 12 hits in 10 innings of work. SLIGHT EDGE: A’S
Gaudin has been solid on the road in 2007, going 2-1 with a 2.98 ERA in eight starts. EDGE: A’S
New York’s Kei Igawa pitched relatively well in his return to the starting rotation, as the left-hander failed to make it through the fifth inning, but he allowed two runs and five hits. The Yankees ended up picking up a 7-3 victory over the Giants. SLIGHT EDGE: YANKEES
Igawa is remarkably a perfect 2-0 at Yankee Stadium, even though he comes in with a terribly-high 7.29 ERA in four outings. EDGE: OVER
The Athletics are 1-4 in their last five road games versus a left-handed starter.

Milwaukee Brewers at Chicago Cubs (FOX | 3:55 PM ET)
Milwaukee’s Ben Sheets is an even 7-7 with a 3.94 ERA in 20 career starts against Chicago. He surrendered five runs and nine hits in a six-inning loss to the Cubs earlier this season. SLIGHT EDGE: CUBS
The Brewers have tallied three straight victories with Sheets on the mound, as the right-hander has allowed just six runs in his last 20 2/3 innings. EDGE: BREWERS & UNDER
Cubs left-hander Sean Marshall has enjoyed pitching at Wrigley Field so far in 2007, posting a 2-1 record and 2.14 ERA in three starts. EDGE: CUBS
The Cubs have won five straight games with Marshall on the bump, outscoring opponents 30-8 in the process. EDGE: CUBS
The Brewers are 1-8 in Sheets’ last nine starts versus the Cubs.

Minnesota Twins at Detroit Tigers (FOX | 3:55 PM ET)
Minnesota rookie right-hander Kevin Slowey is still a perfect 2-0 on the season, but has seen his ERA rise over his last two starts – allowing nine runs and 14 hits over his last 10 1/3 innings. EDGE: OVER
The Twins have won both of Slowey’s starts away from the Metrodome in 2007, picking up victories over Los Angeles and Oakland. SLIGHT EDGE: TWINS
Detroit’s Andrew Miller has won three of his first four Major League starts and in two of those starts – he hasn’t allowed a run. EDGE: TIGERS
Miller is a perfect 2-0 with a 3.18 ERA in two starts at Comerica Park this season. EDGE: TIGERS
The Twins are 6-1 in their last seven games versus a left-handed starter.

Atlanta Braves at Florida Marlins (7:05 PM ET)
Braves right-hander Tim Hudson has dominated the Marlins throughout his career, going 5-1 with a 2.59 ERA in 10 starts. He suffered his first loss to the Fish in his last outing against them on June 4, allowing five earned runs over six innings. EDGE: BRAVES
Hudson has been impressive away from Turner Field, with a 3-1 record and 2.39 ERA in seven starts. He’s allowed just two home runs in 49 innings on the road. EDGE: BRAVES & UNDER
        • Florida’s Byung-Hyun Kim has struggled with his control against Atlanta, issuing 18 walks in 22 innings against them. With all of those walks, he carries an inflated 6.14 ERA against the Braves into this contest. EDGE: BRAVES & OVER
The Marlins have lost three straight games when Kim appears, as he’s walked 10 batters in 15 1/3 innings. EDGE: BRAVES
The OVER is 8-2-1 in the Marlins last 11 home games.

Texas Rangers at Boston Red Sox (7:05 PM ET)
Texas starter Robinson Tejada has beaten the Red Sox in his only career start against them, throwing seven shutout innings and allowing just two hits. EDGE: RANGERS
        • Tejada is 3-4 on the road with a 6.95 ERA, mainly because he’s issued 22 walks in 33 2/3 innings. EDGE: OVER
Boston’s Josh Beckett is 5-1 with a 4.22 ERA at Fenway Park this season. He suffered his first loss at home against Colorado in his last home start, allowing a season-high 10 hits in five innings. EDGE: RED SOX
Beckett is a perfect 1-0 in two starts against the Rangers, as he’s struck out 12 batters and walked just four. EDGE: RED SOX
The Red Sox are 1-5 in Beckett’s last six home starts versus a team with a losing record.

Arizona Diamondbacks at San Francisco Giants (9:05 PM ET)
Arizona’s Doug Davis is an even 3-3 with a 4.18 ERA in nine career appearances against San Francisco. He picked up a 3-2 victory against them on April 27, allowing one run and seven hits over seven innings. SLIGHT EDGE: D-BACKS
Davis has pitched relatively well on the road this season with a 3.40 ERA, but his record is a dismal 2-6. He was knocked around for four runs and six hits in a 7-1 loss to the Yankees in his last start away from Chase Field. SLIGHT EDGE: GIANTS & UNDER
Giants left-hander Noah Lowry has a dominant 5-1 record and 2.79 ERA in nine career outings against the Diamondbacks. BIG EDGE: GIANTS
Lowry has been equally impressive at home in eight starts at AT&T Park, posting a 6-1 record and 2.61 ERA. The southpaw starter has allowed two home runs in 48 1/3 home frames. EDGE: GIANTS & UNDER
The OVER is 4-1 in Lowry’s last five starts versus the Diamondbacks

Toronto Blue Jays at Seattle Mariners (10:05 PM ET)
Blue Jays ace Roy Halladay is an even 3-3 with a 3.32 ERA in 10 career games against the Mariners. SLIGHT EDGE: BLUE JAYS
Halladay might be 4-1 on the road this season, but it hasn’t come easy with a 5.58 ERA – nearly two and a half runs higher than at home. EDGE: OVER
Toronto has won all six of Halladay’s starts since he went on the disabled list in May due to an emergency appendectomy. BIG EDGE: BLUE JAYS
Seattle’s Miguel Batista has allowed just two earned runs and 12 hits in 16 1/3 innings against Toronto. He’s yet to allow a home run against them. EDGE: MARINERS
The Blue Jays are 7-0 in their last seven Saturday games.

San Diego Padres at Los Angeles Dodgers (10:10 PM ET)
San Diego ace Jake Peavy has truly dominated versus Los Angeles in his career, going 7-1 with a 2.52 ERA. He did happen to struggle a bit in his last start against them, allowing four runs and seven hits in 6 2/3 innings. BIG EDGE: PADRES
Peavy hasn’t suffered a road loss so far in 2007, going a perfect 4-0 with a miniscule 0.88 ERA in six starts. BIG EDGE: PADRES & UNDER
Los Angeles starter Brad Penny hasn’t enjoyed pitching against league-rival San Diego in 13 career starts, posting a 3-6 record and 6.03 ERA. EDGE: PADRES
Few pitchers in baseball have been more dominant at home than Brad Penny, as the right-hander is 4-0 with a sparkling 1.38 ERA in eight starts. BIG EDGE: DODGERS & UNDER
The OVER is 4-0 in Peavy’s last four road starts versus the Dodgers

Baseball – Hot & Cold Teams

          MLB

          Saturday, June 30

          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
          Hot/Cold Teams
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This week’s hot and cold MLB teams

Before placing your baseball bets today, have a peek at this week’s hot and cold list. We’ll tell you which teams are making money and which ones are sucking wallets dry.

          HOT

          Seattle Mariners

The Seattle Mariners are finishing the month of June with a flourish, managing two series wins and a sweep in their last three series.

The sweep was against the Boston Red Sox and the Mariners' success came from a combination of hot hitting and steady performances out of the bullpen. Seattle is third in the American League in hitting over the past week, with 35 RBIs on 59 hits.

They were underdogs in two of three meetings with Boston, with oddsmakers pricing them at +171 when the Sox sent Dice-K to the mound for the series finale. Seattle won that game 2-1 in extra innings.

Next up for Seattle is a three-game home series against the Toronto Blue Jays before they travel to Kansas to take on the Royals.

          Chicago Cubs

The Chicago Cubs entered June on an eight-game losing streak but have turned it around impressively since. They are 16-10 for the month and are now in the middle a six-game winning run.

One of the keys to the Cubs' success has been little-known second baseman Mike Fontenot. Called up from the minors earlier this month, Fontenot is batting .408 with 13 RBIs in his 20 games so far.

Chicago has also enjoyed success from moving Alfonso Soriano to the lead-off spot. He has managed a .389 average with four homers in his last eight games. In fact, Cubs hitters are second in the NL with a combined average of .302 and 39 RBIs in the past week.

That has led to Chicago games going over the total in the last three outings in a row, something worth keeping in mind as they face the struggling Washington Nationals in a four-game series later this week.

          Milwaukee Brewers

The only club batting better than the Cubs at the moment is the Milwaukee Brewers. The Brewers have smacked 44 RBIs and 12 home runs over the past seven days.

Pitching has also been a major strength for the Brewers. Their staff has held opponents to a .215 batting average while posting a 3.07 ERA over the last nine games heading into Friday's game. Milwaukee won eight of those games, including sweeps of both the San Francisco Giants and the Houston Astros.

The Brewers embark on a 10-game road trip against the Cubs, Pittsburgh Pirates and Washington Nationals as they look to extend their 7 ½ game lead at the top of the NL Central.

          COLD

          New York Yankees

The Yankees return home this week after a nine-game road trip that has severely dented their chances of making the playoffs.

The trip started with New York being swept by Colorado. They then lost of two of three against San Francisco and the first two against Baltimore. The third game against the Orioles was suspended due to the weather.

The Yankees have only managed 16 runs on 48 hits over the past seven days, and have the worst record in the AL over that period. They are now 11 games behind Boston in the AL East and 8 ½ games behind Cleveland in the wild-card standings.

The Yanks enter a nine-game homestand as they look to gain some ground on the Red Sox, with Oakland, Minnesota and the Los Angeles Angels set to visit the Bronx.

          Colorado Rockies

The Colorado Rockies might be the most unpredictable and inconsistent team in MLB. They took two of three from both the Red Sox and Tampa Bay, then swept the Yankees, but have since gone on to lose seven straight games.

The Rockies were swept by both Toronto and the Chicago Cubs, and while their bats have stayed hot since their interleague success, Colorado’s pitching staff seems to have fallen apart.

They have a major league worst 7.71 ERA over the past week, surrendering a massive 52 earned runs in just seven outings as opponents bat .334 against them.

Not surprisingly, Rockies games have been over the total on six of the last seven occasions and this might be the only safe way to bet on them as they face the Astros, Mets and Phillies in the coming week.

          Washington Nationals

The Washington Nationals have the second-worst record in the NL, at 32-46, and have lost seven of their last nine games. That includes a three-game sweep against the Atlanta Braves in which they were outscored by 43 runs.

It’s very hard to pinpoint a particular area that’s the cause of the Nats struggles. Nothing is working for them at the moment. Their pitching staff is 13th in the NL this season with a 4.81 ERA, and they are batting an NL-worst .249 this year.

"We've been on the bottom of every offensive category from the start of the season," said Nationals manager Manny Acta at a press conference last week. "Why should I be complaining now? We have to keep on looking for ways to make the club better."

The Nationals travel to Pittsburgh for a series before a seven-game homestand against the Cubs and Brewers.

            Saturday’s MLB betting notes

            Sheffield suspended

Gary Sheffield is set to miss two games of the Tigers' three-game series against the Minnesota Twins this weekend. Sheffield will not play Saturday or Sunday due to the suspension handed down by MLB.

Four weeks ago, Sheffield was thrown out of a game against Cleveland by umpire Greg Gibson, for throwing a bat handle after grounding out. The official game report stated that the bat had been thrown at the umpire and Sheffield was suspended for three games.

The slugger appealed and on Thursday the league announced that it reduced the suspension to two games, to be served this weekend.

Sheffield is batting .289 with 52 RBIs and 18 homers this season. For Saturday’s game, the first of his suspension, the Tigers send Andrew Miller (3-1, 2.70 ERA) to the mound to face the Twin’s Kevin Slowey (2-0, 4.94 ERA). Detroit are –151 favorites to take the game.

Dye-ing to get back in the lineup

Chicago White Sox right fielder Jermaine Dye is hoping to return to the lineup this weekend, probably Saturday, as he tries to recover from a quadriceps injury.

Dye has been inactive for the past seven games without going on the DL, but if he can’t manage a comeback this weekend, the White Sox will have to take action.

"If we're going to keep him 15 days without doing anything, then I'm putting J.D. in front of the ballclub," Sox manager Ozzie Guillen told MLB.com on Thursday. "If he can't perform the next couple days, we've got to do something about it."

Chicago faces the Kansas City Royals in Game 2 of a three-game series on Saturday, with John Danks (4-6, 4.78 ERA) squaring up to Odalis Perez (4-7, 5.92 ERA) on the mound. The game is listed as a pick with the total set at 10.

            Shaking up the pen

With an NL-worst 8.42 ERA over the past seven days, the Houston Astros pitching staff is struggling to say the least. The bullpen was particularly weak in their recent nine-game road trip, prompting the Astros to make changes ahead of this weekend’s series against Colorado.

Right-hander Rick White was released from the club on Thursday and Stephen Randolph was designated for assignment. Houston recalled Matt Albers and lefty Mark McLemore and both will slot into the bullpen.

Albers made seven starts for the Astros earlier this season, going 1-4 with a 6.35 ERA. McLemore made two relief appearances with Houston this year, allowing one earned run and striking out five over two innings of work.

Houston continue a four-game series against the Rockies on Saturday and are +100 underdogs behind starter Jason Jennings’ (1-2, 3.66 ERA). The Rockies send Jeff Francis (7-5, 3.80 ERA) to the mound, with the total set at 9.

            Cards getting fit

Things are starting to look a bit better for the reigning World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals. Still 10½ games off the pace in the NL Central, the Cards look set to get some important players back from injury as they aim to close in on the .500 mark before the All-Star break.

Catcher Yadier Molina returned from the DL on Thursday after missing 26 games with a fractured wrist. Shortstop David Eckstein took batting practice on Thursday and is expected to return in the next few days, while Jim Edmonds is reportedly getting close to a coming back too.

There’s also a boost for the pitching staff with news that Braden Looper is expected to be activated from the DL in time to pitch on Sunday, and Chris Carpenter, winner of 15 games last season, threw 34 pitches a simulated game last week.

The Cardinals are locked in a three-game series with the Cincinnati Reds. On Saturday Mike Maroth (5-2, 4.73 ERA) tests his stuff against Kyle Lohse (3-10, 5.02 ERA), with Cincinnati the favorites at –120.

The consensus around the league is unanimous that newcomers to the WNBA are stronger, faster and more athletic.

But are they better, overall, than their predecessors?

''You have a lot of great players out there, a lot of great individual players, but not great team players,'' San Antonio veteran Vickie Johnson said. ''The players are more athletic. But I think it's different because playing with the vets when I was younger, you had to really know the game, you had to really understand the game.

''I think that's something the young players are really missing. Really understanding and knowing the game and how to get your teammates the ball.''

Johnson, one of five players to have played in each of the league's 11 seasons, spent nine years with the New York Liberty before signing with the Silver Stars last season. She entered the weekend ninth in the league in career scoring with 3,685 points, and remains New York's franchise leader in points (3,246), rebounds (1,053) games played (282), field goals made and attempted and free throws made and attempted.

''I was playing against players that had played overseas for seven, eight, nine years,'' Johnson said. ''They had professional experience. They really understood. Like Cynthia Cooper, Dawn Staley, Michelle Timms and all those cats that played overseas, that played on national teams. They brought a different game to the table.

''They did everything to bring the best out. You had to really study them and know they were going to create plays, not only for themselves but also for their teammates.''

Indiana's Tamika Whitmore, a nine-year veteran, agreed with her one-time Liberty teammate.

''When you compare our game to the NBA game, it's still a team game,'' Whitmore said. ''I do believe a lot of the younger players have developed more 1-on-1 skills than team-oriented basketball, but in the end if you don't play like a team you don't win.''

Oddsmakers at pinnaclesports.com list the Indiana Fever as +245 favorites to win the 2007 WNBA championship.

                  ---

SANCHO STARTING: After starting the season with 10 losses and missing injured Sheryl Swoopes, the Houston Comets decided to go with a bigger lineup by starting 6-foot-4 Sancho Lyttle along with Tina Thompson and Michelle Snow.

The move worked with Houston winning four of five games since - including victories against Western Conference rivals Los Angeles, San Antonio and Seattle.

''Sancho is accepting her new role which we have her working at the 3 a lot every day and she is able to guard those quicker guards or when they go with the bigger lineup,'' Comets coach Karleen Thompson said. ''She gives us the rebounds that we need. She crashes hard, she plays great and she's getting more confident, and she offensively hustles.''

Lyttle, who averaged 2.85 points and 4.7 rebounds in her first seven games, has improved to 9.0 and 7.5 in her last five.

                  ---

LOSING AT HOME: Connecticut's 91-75 loss to Washington on Tuesday night was the Sun's fifth straight defeat at home - setting a franchise record. The previous record for consecutive home losses was four in 1999, when the franchise was in Orlando.

''People come in this building now and they expect to win on our home court,'' All-Star guard Katie Douglas said. ''That's unacceptable.''

The Sun, coming off consecutive 26-8 seasons, have lost eight of nine to drop to a 5-10 - their worst record since they lost 10 of 15 to start the 2001 season in Orlando.

''It's extremely frustrating,'' Douglas added, ''because you get in the gym and you do repetitions after repetitions and you make them and you hope things look good. Then you get in the games and it doesn't go your way.''

                  ---

SHOWING IMPROVEMENT: The Washington Mystics appear to be breaking out of their early season struggles and playing to expectations after an 18-win season and a playoff berth last year.

The Mystics opened the season a franchise-worst 0-8, but have won four of six since - including 3-1 road trip that included wins at Phoenix, Chicago and Connecticut. The loss came at Houston, 95-85 on June 22, and evened the struggling teams at 2-10 at the time.

''Our joke is that we are going back to Houston for a replay,'' Mystics interim coach Tree Rollins said. ''We are very, very, very, very blessed to come off a road trip like this after the start that we got off to. We are showing the league that we are competing and the teams will be ready for us.''

Mystics star Alana Beard, who averaged 20.8 points on the trip, was also pleased with the team's improved play.

''It was a huge road trip,'' she said. ''We are right back in this playoff run and you can feel the energy in this locker room.''

                  ---

STATS: Seattle's Lauren Jackson leads the league in scoring (23.5 points) while shooting 52 percent. Minnesota's Seimone Augustus (22.2 points) was second. ... Indiana's Tamika Catchings was tops in rebounding at 9.2 per game, followed by Jackson (8.9). Cheryl Ford is averaging 10.0 rebounds, but has missed five of the last six games with a knee injury. ... San Antonio's Becky Hammon was third in scoring (19.7), followed by Chicago's Candice Dupree (19.6) and Phoenix's Diana Taurasi (19.5). ... Hammon is averaging 21.8 points on 49 percent the last six games. ... The Indiana Fever have held eight straight opponents under 40 percent shooting from the field, becoming the third team in league history to accomplish the feat, according to The Elias Sports Bureau. The Miami Sol (July 7-25, 2001) and the Houston Comets (July 26-Aug. 10, 2003) did it previously. ... New York led the league in 3-point shooting (38.1 percent). The Liberty are shooting 31 percent (57-for-181) from beyond the arc. They shot 52 percent (46-for-89) from 3-point range while winning their first five games.

                  ---

QUOTE OF THE WEEK: ''I have no other plays to run right now that get us more open than some of the shots we had. Wide open at the free throw line, wide open in the corner and wide open under the basket, and we don't make shots.'' - Connecticut coach Mike Thibault, after a 91-75 loss to Washington on Tuesday night.

                        CHASING AARON

Barry Bonds hit his 750th career home run in San Francisco's 4-3, 10-inning loss to Arizona on Friday. The homer pulled the San Francisco slugger within five of tying Hank Aaron's record. The home run came an inning after a fan gave everybody a scare when he hopped the fence and ran out to Bonds in left field. The seven-time NL MVP calmly greeted the man and walked him off and into the custody of security personnel.

                        CYCLE

Aubrey Huff hit for the cycle in Baltimore's 9-7 loss to the Los Angeles Angels on Friday night. Huff tripled in the second inning - his 1,000th career hit - doubled in the fourth, hit a three-run homer in the fifth and singled in the seventh. Brian Fuentes gave up a walk-off home run for the second night in a row and Colorado lost to Houston 9-8 on Friday. With two outs in the ninth inning, Fuentes (0-4) walked Carlos Lee, who hit a grand slam in the 11th off him on Thursday. Mark Loretta followed with his second home run of the season to win it for the Astros. It was the fourth blown save in eight days for Fuentes.

                        PERCIVAL RETURNS

Troy Percival pitched a perfect seventh inning in St. Louis' 4-2 victory over Cincinnati on Friday to pick up his first victory since April 22, 2005. Percival, who is 12th on the career list with 324 saves, signed a minor league deal with St. Louis on June 8 after not pitching in nearly two years because of persistent soreness in his right shoulder.

                        STREAKS

                        SNAPPED

                        SPEAKING

''As a 235-pound fat guy, you get a triple out of the way, that's something. After I got the double, it kind of snuck in my mind. But I haven't been hitting homers lately, so I'm thinking that's going to be a long shot, and I hit that.'' - Baltimore's Aubrey Huff, on becoming the third player in Orioles' history to hit for the cycle in a 9-7 loss to the Los Angeles Angels on Friday night.

                        SEASONS June 30

1908 - At 41 years, 3 months, Cy Young of the Boston Red Sox pitched the third no-hitter of his career, an 8-0 win over the New York Highlanders.

1948 - Cleveland's Bob Lemon pitched a 2-0 no-hitter against the Detroit Tigers for the first American League no-hitter at night.

1962 - Sandy Koufax of the Los Angeles Dodgers struck out 13 New York Mets en route to the first of four career no-hitters, a 5-0 victory at Dodger Stadium.

1970 - Riverfront Stadium in Cincinnati was dedicated, but Henry Aaron spoiled the show for the crowd of 51,050 with a first-inning homer off Jim McGlothlin as Atlanta beat the Reds 8-2.

1978 - Willie McCovey became the 12th player in major league history to hit 500 home runs. His milestone shot off Atlanta's Jamie Easterly wasn't enough, as the Braves beat the San Francisco Giants 10-5 in the second game of a doubleheader at Fulton County Stadium.

1995 - Eddie Murray of the Cleveland Indians became the second switch-hitter and the 20th player in baseball history to reach 3,000 hits when he singled against the Minnesota Twins. Murray joined Pete Rose, the career hits leader with 4,256, as the only switch-hitters to get 3,000.

1997 - Bobby Witt of Texas hit the first home run by an AL pitcher in a regular-season game in almost 25 years, connecting off Ismael Valdes in the Rangers' 3-2 interleague victory over Los Angeles.

1998 - Sammy Sosa hit his 20th home run in June, extending his own major league record for most homers in a month, with an eighth-inning shot for the Cubs against Arizona.

2005 - Chad Cordero earned his 15th save in June in the Washington Nationals' 7-5 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. He tied a major league record set by Lee Smith in 1993 and matched by John Wetteland in 1996.

                          Saturday, June 30

                          HOT

Sean Marshall (Chicago Cubs) - The saying "Cubs win, Cubs win" was made famous by the late Cubs broadcaster Harry Caray, and Marshall is now taking the message to heart. All Chicago does lately is win when the lefty starts. The North Siders have won the last five times he's pitched and the southpaw's allowed fewer than three runs during four of those victories. Chicago is listed as +104 dogs today as they host Milwaukee.

Roy Halladay (Toronto Blue Jays) - The Jays have won each of Halladay's six appearances since he came off the disabled list a month ago. They've scored at least seven runs in his last five outings and reached double digits in three of those contests. Toronto is a -138 road favorite in Seattle tonight.

Brad Penny (Los Angeles Dodgers) - Bettors who have put money on Penny have made a lot more than a penny profit this year. Not only has L.A. won the last seven times he's taken the mound, but his team has gone 14-2 in his 16 starts. He has surrendered one run in each of his last four outings and has gone at least seven innings in all of those appearances. The Dodgers are slight -107 favorites against San Diego.

                          COLD

John Danks (Chicago White Sox) - Stop the presses: the Royals are favored. That's because the Pale Hose have been a mess recently and Danks hasn't helped their cause. The Texas native has not been able to give his team six quality innings in any of his last six starts and the ChiSox have a 1-5 record over that span. Chicago enters tonight's game as +100 road underdogs.

Robinson Tejeda (Texas Rangers) - Tejeda has matched his career-high in wins with five this season. That's the good news. The downside is he's also set a career-high in losses with seven. The Domincan's ERA is above 6.00 this year and the Rangers have just one victory in his last seven outings. Texas is listed as +251 dogs in Boston.

J.P. Howell (Tampa Bay Devil Rays) - Since making an impressive season debut on June 3, the southpaw's pitch count has reached 100 in three of his last four outings and the Rays have zero wins to show for it in that span. Tampa faces the Tribe as +230 road underdogs.

                            Saturday, June 30

Los Angeles Angels at Baltimore Orioles (+128, 9 ½)

Los Angeles rebounded on Thursday night after getting swept at home by the Kansas City Royals earlier this week, beating Baltimore 9-7. It was far from automatic, however, as the Orioles left 14 men on base in the loss.

Bartolo Colon is also a tough pitcher to trust right now. The big right-hander has an 8.54 ERA over his last six starts, with the final four coming against teams from the NL Central.

It’s back to the American League for Colon now. He'll face an offense that’s averaging 5.2 runs over its last 10 games. Baltimore is 5-4 (with one suspended game) during that time despite being the underdog in eight of 10 games.

Brian Burres will pitch for the Orioles.

                            Pick: Orioles +128

Arizona Diamondbacks at San Francisco Giants (-125, 8 ½)

Noah Lowry has been spectacular at home this year with a 6-1 record and a 2.61 ERA in seven starts. The southpaw continues to find a way to get batters out despite walking almost as many (47) as he strikes out (51).

He’ll face an Arizona team that’s struggled against left-handers all season. The Diamondbacks are hitting a major league-worst .231 against lefties this season and their .668 OPS against left-handers trails only St. Louis.

Another left-hander who walks a lot of batters, Doug Davis, will start for Arizona. Davis has already given free passes to 48 batters in 93 inning this season – one of the reasons his WHIP (1.71) is so high.

                            Pick: Giants -125

Toronto Blue Jays at Seattle Mariners (+130, 8 ½)

Betting against Roy Halladay isn’t the seemingly no-win proposition it used to be. The good doctor has a 4.25 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP in 14 starts this season and faces a plucky Seattle club tonight.

The Mariners continue to quietly go about their business. Their 5-3 win over the Jays on Friday was their sixth straight win and they now have an 8-1 record over their last nine. Their record in June includes a 6-0 record against the Boston Red Sox and San Diego Padres.

This will be the first start against Toronto for Seattle pitcher Miguel Batista since he left the Jays in 2005.

                            Pick: Mariners +130
