    Texas at Boston
Boston finished its road trip in disappointing fashion by dropping three straight in Seattle to finish with a 4-5 record. The Red Sox will try to bounce back at home tonight against Texas. But Beantown starter Tim Wakefield has not been overly effective in recent weeks, posting a 7.08 ERA and allowing opponents to hit .289 in his last eight starts. And despite being shut down by Kenny Rogers yesterday, the Ranger offense has been hot, winning six of seven while scoring 57 runs and knocking HRs in 10 straight. Texas looks like a good underdog pick in this one (+240) according to Dunkel, which has the Rangers favored straight up by 1. Dunkel Pick: Texas (+240). Here are all of today's games.

            Hot Lines

            Friday, June 29

St. Louis Cardinals at Cincinnati Reds (-136, 10 ½)

The Great American Ballpark has been anything but great for the Reds, as their MLB-worst 14-23 home record attests. Tonight’s starter, Bronson Arroyo, might be its biggest opponent, going 1-3 in his seven home starts with an ERA of 7.17.

The Cardinals have been one of the National League’s better offensive teams in June, especially against right-handed pitching. Chris Duncan is the sole left-handed bat feasting on opposing righties, but Juan Encarnacion and Ryan Ludwick ignore the usual split advantage to join Albert Pujols as righty sticks dangerous against right-handed pitching.

Arroyo hasn’t won a game since the first week of May and was rocked for six runs in 6 2/3 by the Cards earlier this month. He blames an illness in the spring that made him skip meals, which subsequently weakened him and took some zip off his fastball.

"The thing with me is, it's a double-edged sword, when my fastball is weak and I don't have a good, stiff heater, my command is worse," Arroyo told the Cincinnati Post.

He says he’s eating well and has more confidence in his fastball now, but Arroyo’s pitched so poorly that it’s hard to pass up the value in tonight’s line.

            Pick: Cardinals +128

Toronto Blue Jays at Seattle Mariners (-134, 9)

Anything you can do, I can do better…

The Jays have some things going for them heading into tonight’s game. They’ve gone on a mild run and sit second in their division, generally hit well against left-handers, and their starter tonight is coming off a masterful performance in his last outing.

The Mariners, however, the hottest team in the American League, have hit all pitchers well recently and have a starter coming off a pretty good outing himself.

Seattle gets the nod tonight for three reasons. One, the Mariners and Blue Jays are both really good teams at home and tonight’s game is on the West Coast. Two, Seattle still has a better bullpen than Toronto, injuries notwithstanding. And three, Jarrod Washburn offers more consistency than the young starter the Jays put on the hill tonight.

Dustin McGowan pitched a one-hit shutout against Colorado last Sunday, which could obscure the fact that he was absolutely demolished by the Dodgers just five days earlier. He has unquestionably good stuff, but McGowan and the Jays aren’t a great bet on the road tonight.

            Pick: Mariners -134

San Diego Padres at Los Angeles Dodgers (+109, 7 ½)

MLB betting isn’t all about the starting pitchers, far from it. But when there’s a mismatch like the one you’ll see tonight at Dodger Stadium, it’s worth your while to consider the dominant ace.

San Diego’s Chris Young has already lost a game in L.A. this season, but that was back in April before the 6-foot-10 righty decided to become a mirror-image Big Unit. Young has an ERA of 1.13 in his last 10 starts and in his 63 2/3 innings pitched over that span, he allowed only 35 hits and not a single home run.

Young also has baseball’s best bullpen behind him. Set-up man Scott Linebrink has allowed runs in each of his last three appearances, but it’s been more a case of bad luck than bad pitching.

“The important thing is to keep going back out here and keep being aggressive,” Linebrink told the San Diego Union-Tribune after allowing back-to-back infield and broken-bat hits during Tuesday’s blown save. “You need to try to stay within yourself because everybody's going to go through stuff like this.”

The Padres swept L.A. at Petco earlier this month and while the Dodgers would love to return the favor at home this weekend, starter Hong-Chih Kuo mightn’t be the best choice to topple San Diego’s giant tonight.

            Pick: Padres -117

              Streaking Pitchers

              Friday, June 29

              HOT

Kelvim Escobar (Los Angeles Angels) – For the most part Escobar has been lights out for the Angels this season. He is 9-3 with a 2.81 ERA, which is good for seventh best in the majors. He is undefeated in his last four games including back-to-back victories entering tonight’s contest against the Baltimore Orioles. Oddsmakers have Los Angeles listed as a –155 favorite and the total set at 8 ½.

Johan Santana (Minnesota Twins) – After an inconsistent and un-Santana-like start to the year, the reigning Cy Young Award winner has won his last two games and hasn’t given up more than two earned runs in any of his last four outings. The Twins are in Detroit to take on the Tigers tonight with Minnesota set as a +105 underdog. It is the first time this season that Santana has been dogged.

Justin Verlander (Detroit Tigers) – In what might be the best pitching matchup of the year so far, Verlander will battle with Twins ace Johan Santana tonight. Verlander has been almost untouchable in his last four starts going 4-0 with a sparkling 1.24 ERA and 35 strikeouts. One of those victories was a no-hitter against the Milwaukee Brewers. Verlander and the Tigers come with a –113 price tag tonight. The total is set at 7 ½.

              COLD

Josh Johnson (Florida Marlins) – After starting the year on the DL, Johnson has failed to make it out of the third inning in his first two outings of the year. The young fireballer has allowed 11 earned in his two starts, ballooning his ERA to an awful 14.85. One bright spot for Florida backers is Johnson’s record against tonight’s opponent, the Braves. He is 2-0 with a 2.23 ERA in his short career against Atlanta. The Marlins are +109 home underdogs.

Livan Hernandez (Arizona Diamondbacks) – Batters have absolutely abused Hernandez recently, posting a .526 OBP against him. He is winless in his last five trips to the hill including his last three games in which he’s given up a total of 17 earned runs in just 14 innings of work. Hernandez will face the San Francisco Giants tonight with books setting the D-backs as +120 underdogs and the total at nine.

Bronson Arroyo (Cincinnati Reds) – Reds backers everywhere must be asking the same question: What happened to the Bronson Arroyo that pitched in the All-Star game last year? After his breakout year, he’s fallen apart this season, starting 2-9 with a 5.14 ERA. Arroyo has given up six or more earned runs on five different occasions during his past seven starts. Tonight the Reds host the St. Louis Cardinals with books setting Cincinnati as a –136 favorite.
