    Six-pack for Wednesday

College football teams with worst turnover ratios in 2006; with a better performance here, these teams could rise in '07

-- Army, -18-- If Bobby Ross couldn't straighten them out, this has to be one difficult rebuilding job.

-- Illinois, -15-- Illini are winning recruiting wars, but they'll need Williams to be more accurate passer this fall.

-- North Texas, -15-- They fired their coach couple of weeks after the guy had a heart attack. Bad karma on the way.

-- Iowa, -11-- New QB, no seniors start on OL; this could be rebuilding year, but Ferentz is one of the best coaches.

-- Stanford, -11-- Will take Jim Harbaugh while to straighten this mess out, but he had great record at lower level.

-- NC State, -11-- New coach O'Brien inherits great facilities, talented players; needs to instill more discipline.

-- North Carolina, -11-- Butch Davis won big at Miami, lost big with Browns. Who will Tar Heels play at QB?

-- UNLV, -11-- Going been tough for Sanford, old offensive coordinator for Urban Meyer at Utah. Vegas seems to be a tough place to field winning football team.

-- Tulane, -11-- Green Wave has new coach, sixth of nine on this list that fired their coach after last season.

      Wednesday's List of 13: Random mid-week thoughts..........

      13) Tony Abreu picked fine time for his first big league tater, as Dodger rookie's homer in 10th inning beat Arizona, 6-5.

      12) Cubs have won five in a row; Rockies and A's are both on 0-5 road trips. Standings tend to stretch out a little in the dog days right before All-Star break, when everyone is tired.

      11) The Rockies' 0-5 road trip has to be especially bitter, after they went 5-1 vs Boston/Bronx, sweeping Bombers in a home series. Lot of peaks and valleys in a 162-game season.

      10) Carlos Guillen is first Tiger since Willie Horton in 1976 to knock in a run in ten consecutive games.

      9) Milwaukee's Ben Sheets is 8-1, 2.63 in his last eleven starts.

      8) The $50,000 buy-in HORSE tournament is down to 23 guys as this is typed; Gabe Kaplan was 4th before the dinner break Tuesday, but fell to 11th in first 100 minutes after resumption of play. Greg Raymer and Mike Matusow are still in top ten in chips. Pros consider this to be very prestigious event, since it encompasses many games, so you have to be versatile to win

      7) #125 on the PGA Tour money list is Steve Lowery, with a cool $337,856, not bad for six months' work. #126 has $335,204 in earnings, that being Alexander Cejka. 49 guys have already earned over a million dollars on Tour this season.

      6) I read an article praising Kobe Bryant for "his honesty" in wake of a homemade videotape of Bryant ripping teammate Andrew Bynum to fans in a m all. This guy deserves praise? What a jerk. If Bynum is still on the team next fall, how does Bryant look him in the eye?

      5) The Saint Louis AD resigned Tuesday; she didn't want to fire basketball coach Brad Soderberg this spring, but school president overruled her, and Rick Majerus was hired, quite a coup for the Billikens, if the flighty Majerus stays the course. But the president's actions may make it difficult for school to find an already-established AD, since no one wants to work for a school president who overrules you in critical matters.

      4) Ohio State's Greg Oden is 20 years old, but looks older, so much so that this past season, one sarcastic fan asked Oden. "Hey, what was World War II like?"

      3) Boston's Okajima has allowed a run in only four of his 34 appearances this season. I won't rant here about how money teams are getting an advantage signing these foreign players, but a guy like Okajima should be put in a draft, not just taken by the highest bidder. I will now go bang my head on a wall, for all the good complaining about free agency is going to do.

      2) Friend e-mailed recently to note how several members of his family are in "mixed marriages" where one person roots for Boston, the other for Bronx. It would be cool to be married to someone who likes sports, but if that person rooted for a club I despised, would it be healthy to be married, since I'd want them to be miserable 162 out of 365 days every year?

      1) Classy move by the reeling White Sox recently, two years removed from winning their first World Series title since the president was Woodrow Wilson; they fired their scouting director, a guy that had been with White Sox for 35 years. If I was going to blame someone for the Sox' lousy season, it is doubtful I'd fire the scouting director, but thats just me.

            MLB Betting Notes

            Wednesday, June 27

            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

            Wednesday's MLB betting notes

            Brave move

Apparently Atlanta Braves manager Bobby Cox had seen enough. After watching his team score just one run in its last five games, Cox juggled the lineup before Monday’s game against the Washington Nationals.

Kelly Johnson, who had been batting leadoff, was moved down to seventh spot and Chipper Jones was moved back to the three-hole. Willie Harris and Edgar Renteria slide up one spot each to the top of the order. Cox also returned Andruw Jones back to the cleanup spot.

“I’m trying to go back to our old lineups and see what happens,” Cox told the Macon Telegraph. “I didn’t want to move Kelly. He doesn’t deserve to be moved. But we’ve got to do something.”

The shuffled lineup proved to be effective as the Braves won 4-1 Monday night.

            Whenever’s convenient for you

Major League Baseball gave New York Mets catcher Paul Lo Duca a two-game suspension for his actions Saturday night, but don’t expect Lo Duca to miss any games right away. Lo Duca – as many players do – exercised his right to appeal the penalty and no date has been set for the petition.

“I expected a suspension, maybe not two days, but I understand where they are coming from,” Lo Duca told the New York Daily News. “We’re going to talk about it. Hopefully we can get it down to one game.”

If Lo Duca doesn’t think he has a decent shot of reducing the ruling, the Mets may advise him to drop the appeal prior to Friday’s doubleheader against the Philadelphia Phillies. It’s unlikely Lo Duca would have started both games, so effectively he would be lost for only one match.

Disappointing end to season for Guzman

The Nationals will have to play the rest of the season without their leadoff hitter and starting shortstop. Cristian Guzman was enjoying his finest season in the majors until a thumb injury forced him to undergo surgery to repair ligaments.

The doctor who performed the surgery said the recovery time would take 10 weeks but the Nationals are treating this as a season-ending injury.

Washington has moved Felipe Lopez over to shortstop with Ronnie Belliard taking the responsibilities at second base.

Guzman was hitting .326 with 14 RBIs and 31 runs scored when he went down.

            Where’s the power, Pat?

Pat Burrell is having a miserable season. The Philadelphia Phillies left fielder is batting .205 with eight big flies and 31 RBIs, far off pace from last season’s numbers (.258/29/95). His drop-off in production has left manager Charlie Manuel no choice but to look at other options in left field.

Burrell has been benched in four of the last seven games with Greg Dobbs starting in his place.

“When I come to the ballpark and I look at the lineup, I’m trying to win that game,” Manuel told the Philadelphia Inquirer.

When Burrell’s on and hitting fifth in the batting order, he does a good job protecting Ryan Howard in the lineup. Manuel is now experimenting by slotting Aaron Rowand, a center fielder known primarily for his defensive play, in Burrell's spot in the order.

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lady luck: Wednesday’s best WNBA bets

Connecticut Sun at Detroit Shock (-10, 151 1/2)

This would normally be a battle between the top teams in the East but the Sun have slid to a middle-of-the-pack club this year. Connecticut is just trying its best to get back in position for a playoff spot.

Detroit is coming off Sunday's disappointing loss to the Sacramento Monarchs. Shock coach Bill Laimbeer pointed to the difference in free throw attempts (37-16 in favor of Sacramento) as one of the reasons his team came up short.

“We made crucial mistakes on defense, and they made some big shots at the end,” Laimbeer told the Detroit Free Press. “We missed Cheryl Ford. Their offensive rebounding hurt us. We’re a little small.”

Ford has missed four of the last five games because of a sprained left knee. She’s the Shock’s top post player and she’s still questionable for today’s game.

Still, the Sun will be playing for the second time in as many nights, so fatigue should be a factor.

              Pick: Shock -10

Sacramento Monarchs at Los Angeles Sparks (-4, 141)

Two Western Conference rivals meet for the second time in a week. The Sparks lack star power but they make up for it with overachieving role players. Los Angeles has had four different leading scorers in the last four games.

Sacramento will be looking for revenge tonight. They lost in overtime to the Sparks last week despite leading by as many as 21 in the second half.

              Pick: Monarchs -4

                LA Dodgers at Arizona
The Dodgers continued their dominance of the D-backs last night with 6-5 win in extra innings on Tony Abreu's first career HR. Los Angeles has now won six of seven games over Arizona this season, including all four on the road. The Dodgers will send a hot pitcher to the mound today in Derek Lowe, who is 4-1 with a 2.08 ERA in his last six starts, while holding opponents to a .154 batting average in those games. L.A. looks like a good underdog pick (+125) according to Dunkel, which has the Dodgers favored by 1 1/2. Dunkel Pick: LA Dodgers (+125). Here are all of today's games.

                        Wednesday, June 27

                        HOT

Jered Weaver (Los Angeles Angels) – Weaver’s sophomore slump didn’t last long. After losing three of his first four starts of the season, the youngster is undefeated in his last eight trips to the hill, going 5-0. However Weaver’s durability has been suspect recently - he’s pitched into the sixth inning just once in his last five outings. Weaver comes with a heavy price tag against the Royals tonight with oddsmakers setting Los Angeles as a –232 favorite.

Micah Bowie (Washington Nationals) – Since coming out of the bullpen and into the starting rotation, Bowie has been a pleasant surprise for the Nats. Washington has won the last seven games that he’s started, with Bowie allowing no more than three earned runs in any of them. The bullpen usually plays a key role when Bowie takes to the mound as he hasn’t pitched past the sixth inning in any of his outings. Oddsmakers have the Nationals listed as +200 underdogs tonight and the total set at 8 ½.

Carlos Zambrano (Chicago Cubs) – Zambrano has been the most dominating pitcher in the majors over the past couple of weeks. In his last three starts he’s allowed a total of just two earned runs on eight hits. In his most recent outing Zambrano pitched eight innings and allowed one earned run on three hits while striking out 12 against the Chicago White Sox. Today he will face the Houston Astros with books setting the Cubs as –172 favorites. Zambrano’s last four starts have resulted in unders but a total has not yet been released for today’s game.

                        COLD

Jorge De La Rosa (Kansas City Royals) – De La Rosa is winless in his last eight games allowing five or more earned runs four times over that stretch and his ERA over the last three games is an inexcusable 13.97 after allowing seven earned runs twice in those three outings. De La Rosa’s inability to get outs has over bettors earning paydays the last four times he’s started. The Royals are +214 underdogs today and the total is set at nine.

Anthony Reyes (St. Louis Cardinals) – Reyes will be looking to avoid setting history tonight. With a loss against the New York Mets tonight, he will be off to the worst start by a big league pitcher in the last 14 years. At 0-9 with a 6.64 ERA, it’s a wonder how Reyes is still with the Cards, not to mention in their starting rotation. He’s allowed five or more earned runs in each of his last four starts, with three of the games going over the total. Oddsmakers have the Cards at +160 with the total at nine runs.

Chicago White Sox at Tampa Bay Devil Rays (+104, 9½)

After losing 17 of 22 games in the month of June, the Chicago White Sox have finally started to show some form. Two wins in a row against Tampa Bay gives them a chance to get their first series win since May 22 tonight.

Chicago's success against Tampa is due a rejuvenated offense that has had 12 hits in each of the last two games, coming off a weekend where it scored just two runs during a sweep at the hands of the arch-rival Chicago Cubs.

The White Sox send Mark Buehrle (4-4, 3.39 ERA) to the mound with strong trade rumors surrounding him, but he will be more focused on bouncing back from a 5-1 loss to the Cubs in his last start.

In his career, Buehrle is 5-1 with a 4.35 ERA against the Devil Rays, and he's in good shape to add another win to that record tonight against a team that has lost 13 of 24 games this month.

                          Pick: Chicago -112

Los Angeles Dodgers at Arizona Diamondbacks (–125, 7½)

The Dodgers have been dominant against Arizona this season, winning six of seven games against them, including the first two of this important four-game series. Last night, a pinch-hit homer from Tony Abreu gave L.A. a 6-5 win in the 10th inning.

Don’ let his 8-6 record fool you, Derek Lowe (3.14 ERA) has been impressive for the Dodgers this season and is 4-1 with a 2.08 ERA in his last six starts. Tonight he takes the mound with Los Angeles looking to extend its half-game lead at the top of NL West against the Diamondbacks.

Arizona will counter with Brandon Webb (7-5, 3.24 ERA) to make this an evenly matched pitching duel, but the Dodgers seem to have the Diamondbacks' number this season.

                          Pick: Dodgers + 117

Boston Red Sox at Seattle Mariners (+170, 9)

The league-leading Red Sox have met their match in Seattle this year. The Mariners have beaten the Red Sox in seven consecutive home meetings and Boston sends Dice-K (9-5, 4.01 ERA) to the mound tonight looking to avoid another sweep on the road against the M's.

In his last start on Friday, Matsuzaka walked the first three batters he faced, but managed to get out of that inning with only one run allowed. He went on to pitch five scoreless innings, striking out nine, in a 2-1 win over the Padres.

Boston has not done well against AL West teams in general this season. The Sox lost three of four games at Oakland earlier this month, but may be able to get on track against Ryan Feierabend (1-2, 8.20 ERA) tonight.

                          Pick: Red Sox -178
