    Six-pack for Monday

-- White Sox got swept by Cubs this weekend, scoring two runs; Guillen got tossed in 8th inning Sunday. Frustration is building on the south side of Chicago.

-- Pale Hose are 14.5 games out of first, only 1.5 games up on the last-place Royals, who went 10-8 in interleague play. Chicago lost 14 of 18 against the National League.

-- Westbrook came off DL, tossed seven decent innings but lost, but thats a good sign for Tribe, another contender.

-- Johan Santana hit a triple in Miami Sunday; AL pitchers hit better than NL pitchers in interleague play.

-- Interleague play ends with American League winning by a 137-115 margin, closer than last year, but still not close.

-- Whatever Jim Leyland gets paid, it ain't enough.

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend.......

      13) Couple weeks ago, Tommy Lasorda was on TV with some other guy, promoting prostate cancer awareness. Baseball is involved with donating money for each home run hit during a certain period. The other guy noted how home runs are down 20% this year, and asked Keith Hernandez why.

"Don't ask" was Hernandez' quick reply, and the subject was quickly changed.

      12) Hall of Fame broadcaster Bob Murphy used to say that "...baseball is a game of redeeming features." This was true in Sunday's games, when Simontacchi beat Indians, after giving up 10 runs in his previous start, and McGowan almost no-hit the Rockies, after LA had scored eight runs in 1.2 IP against him five days earlier. You never know from day to day........

      11) Why are baseballs used in minor and major leagues not the same? Who made this decision? Baseballs are different in college, minors and majors-- it makes no sense.

      10) Braves scored one run in their last five games. Not good.

      9) If the baseball playoffs started Monday morning, teams in would be:

      NL: Mets-Brewers-Diamondbacks-San Diego
      AL: Red Sox-Tigers-Angels-Cleveland

      8) Indians lost five games in the standings to Detroit during interleague play, which is now done for the season.

      7) Cubs (8-4), Colorado (10-8) were only NL teams that were more than one game over .500 in interleague games this year.

      6) Connection I never made until this weekend; the English teacher in Vision Quest was one of Gabe Kaplan's players in the classic basketball movie Fast Break. Harold Sylvester is the guy's name who played both parts.

      5) Underrated fact: USC won the national baseball title every year from 1970-74. Winning national title in anything for five straight years is an amazing accomplishment.

      4) Seattle Mariner TV announcers were talking up chances of M's re-acquiring Ken Griffey. Mariners are contenders in Wild Card race-- Junior is obviously still popular in Seattle

      3) Astros blew 7-3 lead in 8th, 9-7 lead in 9th, but beat Texas 12-9 in 10 innings, in slugfest between teams with no pitching

      2) Every team's magic number on Opening Day is 163; right now, Milwaukee's magic number for clinching NL Central is 81, just past the halfway mark from that starting point.

      1) They had a show on ESPN this weekend, with rich dudes buying classic cars at an auction. Some of cars were going for over a million dollars. As the bidding was going up, one guy was agonizing over whether to top a bid, and I'm thinking, "This means as much to him as when I make a transaction in fantasy baseball " Except for the million dollar check he had to write, and model he had on his arm. Everything is relative.

                SPEAKING

Somebody was yelling that out in the stands, and I was a little worried out there.'' - Los Angeles Dodgers' left fielder Luis Gonzalez, on his first inning home run at Tampa Bay into a fish tank in center field that is home to about 30 cownose rays. The Devil Rays beat the Dodgers 9-4 on Sunday.

                SEASONS

                June 25

1934 - Pitcher John Broaca tied a major league record by striking out five consecutive times, but pitched the Yankees to an 11-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox. Lou Gehrig had better luck at the plate, hitting for the cycle.

1998 - Sammy Sosa broke the major league record for homers in a month, hitting his 19th in June leading off the seventh inning of the Cubs' 6-4 loss to Detroit. Sosa passed the mark set by Detroit's Rudy York in August 1937.

1999 - Jose Jimenez, a rookie right-hander having one of the worst seasons of any NL pitcher, threw St. Louis' first no-hitter in 16 seasons, outdueling Randy Johnson in a 1-0 victory over Arizona.

2002 - History was made when Luis Pujols' Detroit Tigers took the field against Tony Pena's Kansas City Royals. Pujols and Pena became the first Dominican-born managers to oppose each other in a major league game.

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                  Monday’s MLB betting notes

                  Sunday night hangover?

The Detroit Tigers played the Atlanta Braves in the Sunday night game, something that manager Jim Leyland has mixed feelings about.

“It’s kind of a Catch-22,” Leyland told the Detroit News. “I’m tickled to death that we’re across the country, but we’ll get back home at 4 o’clock in the morning Monday.”

The Tigers start a 13-game home stand against the Texas Rangers on Monday after playing in Atlanta Sunday.

“When they’re showing you on national TV,” Leyland said. “I guess that you’re doing all right.”

No kidding. Detroit has won seven straight and 15 of its last 20.

                  AL MVP out of action

Justin Morneau was hospitalized for two days after a collision with Florida Marlins catcher Miguel Olivo on Friday left the defending MVP with a bruised right lung. The Minnesota Twins first baseman is expected to join the team on its flight back home, but his return to the lineup is uncertain at this point.

“He’s a big strong hockey guy,” Twins manager Ron Gardenhire told the Minneapolis-St. Paul Star Tribune. “So, when he was hurting like that and couldn’t catch his breath, yeah, we were a little concerned.”

Gardenhire added he wasn’t sure if Morneau would be making a stint on the disabled list.

“I don’t think we’re quite there yet. I think this is going to be a couple days and see how he feels.”

The Twins pounded the Marlins 11-1 Saturday, but Minnesota’s offense will suffer if Morneau is out for an extended period of time. He leads the Twins in home runs (20) and RBIs (57).

Who’s shutting the door for the Cubbies?

Ryan Dempster did not pitch for the Chicago Cubs on Saturday because of a strained oblique muscle. The Cubs closer is not expected to go on the DL, but he shouldn’t pitch for the next few games. Dempster is 16-for-18 in save situations and he owns a 3.38 ERA this season.

The Cubs would like to use Angel Guzman as a fill-in but the reliever is on the DL (foreman) and unlikely to return any time soon. Manager Lou Piniella suggested Carlos Marmol might be an option to close with Dempster out.

“We’re using him in the middle-to late-inning situations, and he’s done a nice job,” Piniella told the Chicago Sun Times. “He goes after you, and he’s got good stuff. You’ve got to like his progress.”

Marmol boasts a good fastball, a wicked slider and a 0.96 ERA, but veteran Bob Howry picked up the save in Saturday’s 2-1 win over the Chicago White Sox.

                  Jonesin’ for some hits

The Braves are struggling to score runs these days and if you’re searching for reasons, look no further than the franchise center fielder. Andruw Jones is batting below the Mendoza line (.198) and he’s tied for the fourth most strikeouts so far this season (73).

The former cleanup hitter sat out two games against the Boston Red Sox this season, no doubt because of a career 0-17 mark with seven strikeouts against the BoSox.

So what's being done to get Jones' swing back?

“I’m just trying to get him to settle down and relax, do what he can do instead of what everybody expects him to do,” hitting coach Terry Pendleton told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “The toughest part is trying to get him to slow down. He’s trying to rush. He’s trying to make up 50 points with one swing. He’s trying to drive in 10 runs with one swing. He can’t do that. It’s impossible.”

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                      Streaking Pitchers

                      Monday, June 24

                      Hot

Roy Halladay (Toronto Blue Jays) - Halladay is returning to the form that has him as a perrenial Cy Young candidate in the American League. The right-hander is 4-0 with a no-decision in his last five starts, and hasn't lost an outing since May 19. With a 2.42 ERA and 1.03 WHIP since June 6, there's plenty of value in Halladay and the Blue Jays tonight in Minnesota against the Twins. Oddsmakers have the Jays as -140 favorites for the contest.

Julian Tavarez (Boston Red Sox) - For a fifth starter, the long-time relief pitcher has been doing more than simply holding up his end of the bargain. Tavarez is 2-0 in his last three starts with a stellar 2.25 ERA for the Red Sox. The native of the Dominican Republic hasn't lost a start since May 11 for Boston, -122 favorites tonight at Safeco Field against the Seattle Mariners.

                      Cold

Tim Lincecum (San Francisco Giants) - While Lincecum has some of the best stuff in the big leagues, the 22-year-old rookie has been anything but lights-out lately. Struggling with his control, Lincecum hasn't won a game in over a month, putting up an awful 12.00 ERA in his last three trips to the hill. Lincecum has 54 strikeouts in 52 innings pitched this season, but also has given up 25 walks. Books have San Francisco listed as -110 favorites for tonight's game against the San Diego Padres.

Tim Hudson (Atlanta Braves) - Braves backers are expecting Hudson to turn in a great performance tonight, especially given how anemic the Braves offense has been lately. They might be expecting too much. The sinkerballer hasn't cashed a decision since May 30 for the Braves, -180 home favorites tonight against the Washington Nationals. With a 5.52 ERA during the skid, Hudson hasn't been his usual self.
