      MLB Betting Notes

      Sunday, June 24

      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

      Sunday’s MLB betting notes

      Familiarity breeds … success?

It hasn’t exactly been plain sailing for Nomar Garciaparra since he left the Boston Red Sox in 2004. Injuries and poor form have left the once legendary Nomah unable to recreate his glory days of Fenway. That goes for both the Cubs and the Dodgers.

Nomar is batting .281 with 38 RBIs and just one home run for the season, but this weekend’s series at Tampa Bay might offer him a reprieve.

The Devil Rays were familiar opposition to Garciaparra in his AL East days and he has 15 career homers against them. That’s the second highest home run total he holds against any team in the majors.

      All’s not well with Vernon

It’s been a tough season for Blue Jays slugger Vernon Wells and now he's lost his No. 3 spot in the lineup, which he has occupied for the past five years.

Wells has a batting average of just .248, with seven home runs and 35 RBIs for the season, and Jays manager John Gibbons decided to move him to the lead-off spot for this weekend’s series with the Colorado Rockies.

That enables Toronto to move Alex Rios, who leads the team with 16 home runs, into Wells' spot as the Jays look to boost their offense.

Toronto play the last of a three-game series against the Rockies on Sunday, with Josh Fogg (3-5, 4.58 ERA) set to face Dustin McGowan (3-3, 5.68 ERA) on the mound. The Blue Jays are –119 favorites with the total set at 10½.

AL rules the right medicine for Ramirez

An interleague series against the Chicago White Sox might be just what the doctor ordered for Cubs slugger Aramis Ramirez as he looks to recover from a knee injury.

Reactivated from the DL on Friday, Ramirez will be able to take advantage of American League rules and start as the designated hitter, allowing him to bat without having to risk re-injuring his knee playing the outfield.

The plan worked very well for the Cubs on Friday against the White Sox. Ramirez hit his 14th home run of the season in the first inning of a 5-1 win.

Ramirez will be looking to continue his successful return on Sunday against Sox pitcher Jose Contreras (5-7, 4.81 ERA). The Cubs will counter with Sean Marshall (3-2, 2.84 ERA) and are +104 underdogs to take the series finale.

      Power boost for Pirates bench

The Pittsburgh Pirates strengthened their bench on Friday when they signed Josh Phelps off waivers from the Yankees. Phelps has a batting average of .263 and has managed 12 RBIs and two home runs in just 80 at-bats this season.

"We are looking to see if we can upgrade our bench with Phelps," general manager Dave Littlefield told MLB.com. "He's shown power in the major leagues in the past and has been a solid first baseman."

The Pirates were quick to point out that Phelps would be a bench player and his acquisition will not affect the status of current first baseman Adam La Roche.

Phelps joined the Pirates ahead of the second game against the L.A. Angels on Saturday. He could be in line to make his debut in the final game of that series on Sunday. The Pirates are +155 underdogs for the win on Tom Gorzelanny’s (7-4, 3.01 ERA) start.

      Don’t expect to see Damon

Johnny Damon has been told by Yankees manager Joe Torre that he will not be starting any of the team's interleague games at San Francisco this weekend, according to MLB.com.

Damon, who is normally a center fielder, has been struggling with a strained abdominal muscle and has been used as the designated hitter in recent weeks.

With the DH not an option, Damon will sit the weekend out. If Damon is not ready for duty by Tuesday’s series opener against the Baltimore Orioles, he will be put on the disabled list for the first time in his career.

The Yankees, minus Damon, close out interleague play on Sunday against the Giants and are –149 favorites on Mike Mussina’s (3-4, 5.10 ERA) start. The total is set at 9.

          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lady luck: Sunday’s best WNBA bets

Indiana Fever at New York Liberty (+3 ½, 143)

The Fever and Liberty meet for the third time this season and New York hopes the home-court trend established in the first two meetings continues at Madison Square Garden on Sunday afternoon.

Both teams lost home games Friday night, though the Fever’s defeat as 8 ½-point favorites was the bigger surprise. Indiana had been 5-1 straight up (SU) and against the spread (ATS) in its preceding half-dozen games, whereas New York’s loss dropped the Liberty to 2-5 SU and ATS over the last seven.

The Fever have been the better team in recent weeks and star forward Tamika Catchings is likely to rebound from Friday night’s disappointing nine-point effort. Indiana upset the Detroit Shock in its last road game as 3 ½-point underdogs and Catchings’ 26 points and 14 rebounds were the biggest reasons why.

Indiana fell victim to Katie Douglas’ star turn on Friday. The Liberty don’t have a similar star to victimize the Fever the same way and guard Erin Thorn’s wonky ankle doesn't help matters for New York.

          Pick: Fever

Houston Comets at Phoenix Mercury (-9, 170)

The Comets are 0-6 away from Houston and have already suffered a 26-point loss in Phoenix this season. Their improvement from the beginning of the season, however, finally translated into wins in their last two games. Houston is only 4-7-1 ATS for the season, but 3-1-1 ATS over its last five games.

A two-game winning streak isn’t monumental, but it should be a confidence-builder for a Houston team that started the season 0-10 SU. The Comets did a lot of things right in their pair of wins: they shot 50.4 percent from the floor while limiting their opponents to 41.5 percent shooting, and Houston’s 40 assists over the two games dwarfed its opponents’ combined total of 24.

As Houston gains confidence, the Mercury might be losing theirs. They’ve lost their last two games at home, including Friday night’s loss to the Shock when Phoenix blew a 16-point lead in the second half.

Phoenix misses guard Cappie Pondexter, who averages 17.3 points per game but has missed the last two contests. She’ll miss a third on Sunday.

          Pick: Comets

Seattle Storm at Los Angeles Sparks (-2, 156)

Sacramento leads the WBNA Western Conference, but the Storm and Sparks are among the four teams within 2 ½ games of the conference lead. Sunday night’s meeting at the Staples Center is big for both teams and it also marks their first head-to-head clash in 2007.

Los Angeles snapped a three-game losing streak on Friday night with an overtime win over the Monarchs as 6-point home underdogs. The Sparks overcame a 21-point deficit and outscored Sacramento 28-9 in the fourth quarter to force the extra period. It was a balanced attack that led to the win, with five L.A. players scoring between 14 and 21 points.

Seattle, on the other hand, continued a worrying run of poor showings on Friday night, losing in Minnesota to make the Storm 1-3 SU and ATS over their last four.

Lauren Jackson, averaging 21.3 points per game on the season, has averaged only 14.7 in Seattle’s trio of recent losses. Seattle is 4-0 SU and ATS when she scores 23 or more, 1-6 SU and ATS when she scores fewer. The Storm’s poor form will continue as long as Jackson’s not herself.

          Pick: Sparks

            Houston at Texas
The Rangers are feasting on N.L. Central foes as Texas has won seven of its last nine against the Division, including four straight while outscoring the opposition 31-13. The last two wins have come against the Astros, giving Ron Washington's club a 4-1 mark against their instate rival this year and outscoring Houston 40-16. Those numbers can't look good to Houston starter Chris Sampson, who gave up six runs and 14 hits over six inning in his last start against the Angels on Monday (10-9 loss). The Rangers look like a good home underdog (+120) in this one according to Dunkel, which has Texas favored straight up by 1. Dunkel Pick: Texas (+120). Here are all of today's games.

                  Hot Lines

                  Sunday, June 24

Kansas City Royals at Milwaukee Brewers (-175, 10)

Milton Bradley will not be joining the Royals. The volatile Oakland Athletics outfielder was dealt to Kansas City earlier this week, but the deal fell through at the last moment.

“There was a health concern on our part concerning Milton, and at this point the trade is dead,” said Royals general manger Dean Taylor.

Bradley has been on the disabled list three times this season because of three separate injuries. Backing out of the deal was a good move for Taylor, injury or no injury. Bradley is a headache the Royals clubhouse needs no part of.

Still the Brewers should be able to finish the series sweep today. Since being no-hit by Justin Verlander 10 games ago, Milwaukee has scored 70 runs. The Brewers’ offense will get to Kansas City starter Odalis Perez early and often.

                  Pick: Brewers –175

Boston Red Sox at San Diego Padres (-124, 7)

Picking a winner in this contest is all about choosing which pitcher you like more. Jake Peavy and Josh Beckett are the leading candidates for the Cy Young in each league and together they have a collective 19-2 record.

Trying to pick the winner of these two aces is like trying to appoint the winner of a beauty contest between Jessica Alba and Jessica Biel.

Playing in a National League park creates serious problems for Red Sox manager Terry Francona. No matter how he fills out his lineup card, there’s no way David Ortiz, Kevin Youkilis and Mike Lowell can all start.

We suggest taking the Padres because you may never see a better line for Peavy in a home start.

                  Pick: Padres –124

Houston Astros at Texas Rangers (-106, 11)

Don’t look now, but the Rangers have put together a nice little win streak. The club is 7-2 since June 14, picking up wins against Roy Oswalt, Ted Lilly and Tom Gorzelanny along the way. Yesterday’s 7-2 victory over state rival Houston secured the Silver Boot trophy (awarded to the Texas club that wins the season series) for the third time in the last four years.

“You can never predict baseball,” Rangers manager Ron Washington told the Dallas Morning News. “If we pitch well, we’ve got a chance. With the streak we own, I give (credit) to the starting pitching.”

The Rangers have the league’s second-highest team ERA (5.32) but they’ve allowed only 13 runs in their last four games (3.25 ERA).

                  Pick: Rangers –106

                    Streaking Pitchers

                    Sunday, June 24

                    Hot Pitchers

Mike Mussina (New York Yankees) - Mussina is finding his groove at just the right time for the Yankees as they attempt to make a push for a playoff spot. He has posted a solid 2.75 ERA in his last three starts for the Yankees, -157 favorites today against the San Francisco Giants. Yankees backers have certainly benefitted from Mussina's return to form lately and with 17 strikeouts in his last 19 innings pitched, it looks like he's got his power back too.

Johan Santana (Minnesota Twins) - It is common knowledge that Santana is almost always on a hot streak, but bettors often forget just how tough the two-time Cy Young award winner is away from the Metrodome. The Twins ace has a 1.84 ERA on the road this season, with an incredible 51 strikeouts compared to only 14 walks in six starts. It doesn't hurt that Santana has a sparkling 1.57 ERA since June 4, either. Oddsmakers have Minnesota as -211 favorites today against the Washington Nationals.

                    Cold Pitchers

Robinson Tejeda (Texas Rangers) - It's been a tough go for Tejeda and the Rangers staff so far this season. Tejeda has been especially lackluster in his last three trips to the bump, with a 6.32 ERA and only one win since May 19. The right-hander's biggest problem has been his inability to keep runners off the basepaths, as he has posted a .410 OBP against and 2.04 WHIP during the skid. Sportsbooks have the Rangers as a -106 pick 'em tonight against the Houston Astros.

Doug Davis (Arizona Diamondbacks) - Davis was throwing as well as any lefty in the National League until recently. With an 0-2 record and gaudy 11.08 ERA in his last three outings, baseball bettors would have to be reckless with their money to bet on the Diamondbacks today against the Baltimore Orioles. Oddsmakers have the D-Backs as -122 favorites for the contest at Chase Field.
