    Saturday, June 23

Columbus (6-9) @ New York (5-10)-- Dragons got pasted 67-13 in Dallas last week, in game they trailed 36-7 at half; they lost 51-42 in Columbus seven weeks ago (+3), but Destroyers now on five game losing streak, scoring 41.4 ppg during skid. Under is 6-2-1 in last nine Columbus games, but 0-5 in last five Dragon games, as NY has allowed 73.3 ppg over last three games. Neither side is worth an investment here.

Austin (4-11) @ Tampa Bay (8-7)-- Surging Storm can finish with winning record, after 0-5 start, while it was announced this week that Austin's franchise will drop to AF2 next year, so that news is totally depressing for team that is 1-5 since its bye, with losses by 21,12,1,10,17 points. Tampa is 7-1 since its bye, covering all seven wins. Over is 11-3 in last fourteen Storm games, 10-3 in last thirteen Austin games.

Kansas City (10-5) @ Chicago (11-4)-- Short work week for Rush, after ESPN2 win Monday night; they lost season opener 54-41 in Kansas City (-7), getting outgained by 110 yards and turning ball over six times (-4). Chicago has won last two games after 1-3 skid. Surging Brigade won last four games by 6,13,13,3 points; they'll need to cover kicks better, after allowing Nashville to gain 317 yards on ten kick returns last week, in 66-63 win.

Grand Rapids (4-11) @ Nashville (6-9)-- Kats lost 71-55 in Grand Rapids seven weeks ago (-6.5), in game where Nashville gained 403 total yards, but turned ball over six times. Since that win, the Rampage has lost five of six games, with losses by 3,25,13,23,29 points- when you lose your home finale 69-40, it isn't a good sign that you're fighting hard to the end. Nashville is 2-5 in last seven games; but they hung tough at 11-4 KC last week, losing 66-63.

Utah (7-8) @ Los Angeles (9-6)-- Utah had bye last week, during which a teammate died due to brain illness, so impossible to tell what their mental state is here, playing out string vs team they beat 76-63 at home ten weeks ago (-8.5). Avengers won three in a row, by 3,3,18 points; they covered last three home games, with wins by 6,3,18. Six of last seven LA games stayed under the total, as did six of last seven Utah games.

          MLB Betting Notes

          Saturday, June 23

          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

          Saturday’s MLB betting notes

          Better than the Yankees?

The Colorado Rockies bring their American League-dominating act north of the border this weekend as they face the Toronto Blue Jays at the Rogers Centre.

Prior to Friday’s opener with the Jays, Colorado had gone 9-3 against teams from the AL East. The Rocky Mountain News delights in pointing out that the New York Yankees, a team the Rockies just swept, are only 8-15 against the AL East.

Colorado is 21-9 in interleague play since 2006, an amazing record given the AL’s dominance over that span. The Rockies’ 10-5 interleague record this season is two games ahead of anyone else in the National League, while their 11-4 mark last year paced the senior circuit by three full games.

          Double trouble in Queens

The New York Mets have had lots of problems in June, as evidenced by their 4-14 record in the month prior to this weekend’s interleague set with the Oakland A’s. They’re still leading the NL East, but they’ve long since lost the faith of regular Mets backers, who would’ve dropped 12.40 units in June.

New York’s biggest problems have been against left-handed pitching. Before Friday’s series opener (against southpaw Lenny DiNardo), the Mets had lost their previous eight games against left-handed starters, dating back to May 30.

New York was favored in seven of those eight games, meaning consistent backers lost their shirts to the tune of -10.37 units, in other words a $1,037 loss if they'd bet $100 each game. The Mets managed only 17 total runs in those eight games.

The A’s follow up DiNardo with Joe Saunders, another left-hander, on Saturday.

          Will T-Bay become K-town?

The batters for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, eternally mired in a youth movement, have an AL-high 546 strikeouts in their 70 games through Thursday.

The D-Rays are in for a tough weekend with the Los Angeles Dodgers coming to town this weekend. The Dodgers pitching staff tops the majors with 7.7 strikeouts per nine innings.

Tampa Bay will be without the injured B.J. Upton, who tops all their batters with 68 whiffs. Given Upton’s .320 average and .941 OPS in 2007, however, bettors can be sure the Rays would be better off with him in the lineup than on the sidelines.

Randy Wolf takes the hill for the Dodgers on Saturday. The veteran left-hander is averaging 8.7 strikeouts per nine innings this year, a career high.

          SB time in SD

It’s rare enough for the Boston Red Sox and San Diego Padres to face each other, but the truly rare occurrence this weekend at Petco Park is Saturday’s perfect storm for stolen bases.

Knuckleballer Tim Wakefield faces Chris Young, who unfurls every inch of his 6-foot-10 frame with his leg kick, on Saturday night. Theft on the basepaths has rarely been easier.

Opposing baserunners are 19-for-19 in stolen base attempts against Young and 17-for-21 against Wakefield. They rank second- and fourth-worst respectively, in all of MLB in allowing stolen bases.

The Red Sox and Padres both rank among the bottom three teams in the majors for gunning down would-be base stealers (combining to allow 112 SB against only 18 CS) and Wakefield and Young are the worst offenders both teams have to offer.

            Gameday

            Saturday, June 23

            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

            MLB Saturday Gameday

The last weekend of interleague play features the New York Yankees in San Francisco to face the Giants, and the Pittsburgh Pirates at Anaheim. But the best highlights today may come out of an all-NL matchup in St. Louis as the Philadelphia Phillies take on the Cardinals.

            Philadelphia at St. Louis
            Adam Eaton (7-4, 5.33) vs. Adam Wainwright (5-6, 4.70)

In this weekend’s only NL matchup the Phillies and Cardinals both need to pick up a win to gain ground in their respective divisions. The Phillies and starting to close in on the Mets in the NL East, while the Cardinals would be a lot closer to Milwaukee in the Central if they didn’t seem to lose every time the Brewers did.

In Game 2 of this series the Phillies send Adam Eaton to the hill and St. Louis counters with Adam Wainwright. Despite his high ERA, Eaton has been pretty good lately with a 4-1 record in his last six starts. Eaton will probably need to pitch at least six solid innings to guarantee a Philadelphia win because as we’ve seen already this season, anything can happen once the Phillies go to the bullpen.

Wainwright can’t seem to string together two quality starts. His last two starts both came against Kansas City, but both had a very different outcome. In his first start against the Royals Wainwright pitched eight shutout innings and allowed only one hit. Five days later he was tagged with the loss after giving up four earned runs on nine hits over seven innings. However, if Wainwright follows his usual pattern, he should turn in a quality start on Saturday.

            Pittsburgh at L.A. Angels
            Ian Snell (6-4, 2.63) vs. Kelvim Escobar (8-3, 2.97)

Ian Snell is expected to return to the mound for Pittsburgh on Saturday after missing his last start due to blisters. In an odd twist it was initially reported that Snell burned his finger while cooking chicken, but now he apparently did it while cleaning his stove after cooking the chicken. If Snell can't stand the heat, he should stay out of the kitchen in the future. Before his unfortunate kitchen accident Snell turned in his best pitching performance of the season, a complete-game shutout of the Texas Rangers. As long as the blister doesn’t get in the way, Snell should be his usual dominant self on Saturday.

Escobar has been one of the Angels' best starters in June with a 2-0 record in three starts. Escobar should have picked up the win in his other start when he allowed three runs and struck out 14 versus Cincinnati, but the bullpen coughed it up late. If both Escobar and Snell have all their pitches working on Saturday, this could be a low -scoring game - at least until the bullpen gate swings open.

            N.Y. Yankees at San Francisco
            Chien-Ming Wang (7-4, 3.33) vs. Matt Morris (7-4, 3.21)

One of the biggest reasons for the Yankees' recent resurgence has been the pitching of Chien-Ming Wang. In his last seven starts Wang has been totally dominant, with a 6-1 record and a 2.28 ERA. Wang even pitched brilliantly in the one loss when he allowed only three runs over eight innings to the Angels. The Yankees only scored one run for Wang and he took the L in a 3-1 New York defeat.

The wheels came off for Matt Morris in his last start. Morris was blasted for eight runs on nine hits in only four innings by the Red Sox. That was only the second time this season that Morris had allowed more than three earned runs. In the start previous to his meltdown versus Boston, Morris pitched a complete-game seven hitter against Toronto and allowed only three runs. If Morris comes armed with the same stuff he threw at Boston, the Yankees' hard-hitting lineup will likely send him to the showers early.

                SCOREBOARD

                Saturday, June 23

Oakland at N.Y. Mets (7:10 p.m. EDT). Joe Blanton looks for win No. 8 on the season for the Athletics.

                STARS

                Friday

-Tom Glavine, Mets, gave up one run in eight innings and drove in two runs in the New York Mets' 9-1 win over Oakland.

-Kenny Rogers, Tigers, allowed two hits in six innings and Detroit topped Atlanta 5-0.

-Carlos Zambrano, Cubs, matched a career-high with 12 strikeouts in eight innings to lead the Chicago Cubs past the Chicago White Sox 5-1.

-Corey Hart, Brewers, homered and drove in four runs to help Milwaukee beat Kansas City 11-6.

-Hanley Ramirez, Marlins, hit a tie-breaking home run in the eighth inning to lift Florida over Minnesota 5-4.

-Aaron Harang, Reds, gave up two hits and an unearned run in Cincinnati's 16-1 pounding of Seattle.

                CHASING AARON

Barry Bonds hit his 749th career home run in San Francisco's 7-3 loss to the New York Yankees on Friday to move within six of tying Hank Aaron's career record of 755. The Giants' slugger connected on a 3-2 pitch from Scott Proctor in the eighth inning, hitting a line drive over the fence in right-center. It was his 15th homer of the season, but just his fourth since May 8. Proctor was the 442nd pitcher to surrender a homer to Bonds.

                HOMECOMING

Ken Griffey Jr. returned to the city where he became a star on Friday, helping Cincinnati thump Seattle 16-1. Griffey, who was honored by the Mariners in a ceremony before the game, went 1-for-5 with a run scored.

                THE GAMBLER'S COMEBACK

Making his first start of the season after a blood clot was removed from his pitching shoulder, Kenny Rogers gave up only two hits in six innings to lead Detroit past Atlanta 5-0 on Friday. After two rehab outings in the minor leagues, Rogers got off to an ominous start - he hit Kelly Johnson with the very first pitch - then retired the next 10 hitters.

                PROMOTION

A few days after earning a promotion based on a 43-game minor league hitting streak, Brandon Watson went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs to help Washington beat Cleveland 4-1 on Friday.

                OFFENSIVE OFFENSE

Detroit defeated Atlanta 5-0 on Friday to hand the Braves their third consecutive shutout. It was the first time since 1988 that the Braves have been the victim of three straight shutouts and their scoreless streak now stands at 28 innings.

                STREAKS

Ichiro Suzuki extending his hitting streak to 17 games in Seattle's 16-1 loss to Cincinnati on Friday. ... San Francisco lost their season-high eighth straight game, 7-3 to the New York Yankees. Derek Jeter extend his hitting streak to 16 games for the Yankees.

                SNAPPED

Tom Glavine ended a five-start winless streak in the New York Mets' 9-1 victory over Oakland on Friday. The win was the 296th of Glavine's career and first since May 19. ... Miguel Tejada went on the 15-day disabled list with a broken left wrist before Baltimore's 7-1 win over Arizona, ending his consecutive games played streak at 1,152, the fifth-longest in major league history.

                SPEAKING

''I was more upset because I didn't get the guy out, but it was kind of funny. I don't know how it got in there, but it got in there somehow.'' - Washington third baseman Ryan Zimmerman, on a bad-hop single that found its way inside a his jersey in the second inning of the Nationals' 4-1 win over Cleveland on Friday. Zimmerman had to reach between his buttons to retrieve the ball hit by Franklin Gutierrez.

                  Cleveland at Washington
The Indians' loss last night to Washington was costly as Cleveland dropped out of a first place tie with Detroit. The Tribe will try to get that game back today behind starter Paul Byrd (6-3, 4.81). But after winning four straight starts, Byrd has stumbled to an 0-2 record with a 9.60 ERA in his last three. Nats' starter Matt Chico is coming off his worst start of the season, but prior to getting pounded by Detroit he had posted a healthy 2.74 ERA in his previous four starts. The pesky Nationals look like a good home underdog (+165) according to Dunkel, which has Washington favored straight up by 1. Dunkel Pick: Washington (+165). Here are all of today's games.

                    Saturday, June 23

Los Angeles Dodgers at Tampa Bay Devil Rays (-122, 9)

The Devil Rays are playing at home and have nice numbers against left-handed pitching this year, two big reasons they’re favored on Saturday afternoon against the Dodgers.

Los Angeles actually has a better road record than the D-Rays do at home, however, and two of Tampa Bay’s top sluggers against lefties won’t face Randy Wolf today (injured B.J. Upton and demoted Elijah Dukes).

Then there’s the fact that Scott Kazmir takes the hill for the home team. Kazmir’s enamored MLB analysts and bettors alike since busting on the MLB scene as a 20-year-old in 2004. He’s not the same pitcher that he was last year, though. He’s getting hit more often and getting hit harder too, while walks are way up from 2006 and strikeouts are down.

The Dodgers are leading a tough NL West while the Devil Rays were once again out of the postseason picture by May. The visitors have consistently done the little things to win all season and today’s line gives them rare value against a perennial underachiever.

                    Pick: Dodgers +114

Pittsburgh Pirates at Los Angeles Angels (-206, 7 ½)

In Scot Shields and Francisco Rodriguez, the Angels have the best 1-2 punch to close a game in all of baseball. They both worked in last night’s extra-innings win over the Pirates and Shields threw 30 pitches, the second-most he’s thrown all season. That likely rules him out for tonight. But with Kelvim Escobar taking the hill, it’s doubtful whether manager Mike Scioscia will need the bullpen anyway.

Escobar has pitched 41 of a possible 45 innings in his last five starts at home and has a 1.54 ERA in those starts. The Angels won four of the five and all four victories were runline winners as well. Escobar’s career year is a result of getting a little lazier.

"My agent was telling me, sometimes less is more," he told Southern California’s Daily Breeze. "The only thing I'm not doing is not running outside and believe me, my body feels a lot better … I used to run a lot. My body feels a lot better. I'm recovering a lot better, too."

The Angels are MLB’s top home team both straight up (27-10) and as far as profits are concerned (+10.96 units). The Pirates, on a three-game losing streak and twice shut out in their recent series with the Seattle Mariners, aren’t in a good position to topple the Angels from their perch.

                    Pick: Angels -1 ½ (+108)

Baltimore Orioles at Arizona Diamondbacks (-132, 9 ½)

The O’s are a juggernaut, time to break ‘em up!

Baltimore had been mired in a hideous slump before firing manager Sam Perlozzo. The Orioles have won three straight under interim manager Dave Trembley, including last night’s defeat of the D-Backs and 2006 NL Cy Young Award winner Brandon Webb.

Tonight they’re starting a young left-hander, Brian Burres, against Arizona’s veteran righty Livan Hernandez. Burres has been a pleasant surprise in his limited MLB exposure while Hernandez has been hit hard recently. So why take the D-Backs?

Because it can’t last. As recently as four days ago the Orioles were the worst bet in baseball. Three wins doesn’t change the fact that they’re a directionless team, especially with the recent injury to their best player, Miguel Tejada.

Arizona, on the other hand, has a lot to prove after last night’s error-filled loss. Hernandez has a lot to prove as well and is determined to correct his recent troubles tonight at home. The D-Backs are only a half-game out of the NL West lead and will have a focus tonight that the O’s can’t muster.

                    Pick: Diamondbacks -132

                          Saturday, June 23

                          Hot

Justin Verlander (Detroit Tigers) - No-hitter notwithstanding, the right-handed flamethrower has been absolutely sensational this month. Verlander is 3-0 in June with a sparkling 1.23 ERA for the Tigers. The 2006 AL Rookie of the Year hasn't allowed a dinger during the hot streak, and has struck out just over a batter an inning. No surprise that Detroit is a -148 favorite at Turner Field in Atlanta against the Braves today.

Chien-Ming Wang (New York Yankees) - Clemens, Pettitte and Mussina get the press clippings, but Wang has been the Yankees' best starter this season. Wang is 3-0 in his last three trips to the hill with an excellent 1.46 ERA, including a .233 OBP against and stellar 0.77 WHIP during the span. Wang also boasts a 2.89 ERA on the road this season. Oddsmakers have the Bronx Bombers as -166 road favorites for today's game against the San Francisco Giants.

                          Cold

Jarrod Washburn (Seattle Mariners) - Washburn's recent performances have tainted what had otherwise been a solid season for the lefty. The former Angel is winless since May 27 for the Mariners, who host the Cincinnati Reds tonight as -169 favorites. Washburn has put up a stiff 8.56 ERA during the skid, raising his ERA on the year to 4.38. The biggest problem for M's bettors has been Washburn's control problems - he's walked eight batters in his last 13 innings pitched.

Paul Byrd (Cleveland Indians) - There's no doubt Byrd would like to forget June, as would Indians backers who put money down on the right-hander. Byrd is 0-2 with an ERA just under 10.00 in his last three outings for the Tribe. Byrd's .421 OBP against and very high 2.13 WHIP throughout June have not helped Cleveland bettors rock any cash either. Nevertheless, the Indians are -153 road favorites today against the Washington Nationals.
