Lady luck: Wednesday’s best WNBA bets

Los Angeles Sparks at Houston Comets (+2, 152 ½)

The Sparks were down by 11 after the first half against the Detroit Shock on Monday, but came back with a strong effort and led by a point heading into the fourth quarter. Detroit won the game 79-73 but Los Angeles proved it still has plenty of fight left.

As for the Houston Comets, they’re just playing the schedule out. Sheryl Swoopes is still out indefinitely with a back injury, leaving Tina Thompson with an unfair burden.

Thompson gets her points – almost 19 a game – but she’s left exhausted on the defensive end and that has a trickle-down effect on the rest of the team. Houston has been outscored in nine of 10 second halves this season.

    Pick: Sparks –2

Washington Mystics at Phoenix Mercury (-10, 164 ½)

Phoenix routinely plays to the quality of its competition. The Mercury beat the Sacramento Monarchs twice, and on Friday they polished off the Indiana Fever with ease. But with every impressive victory there’s been a disappointing loss, effectively nullifying any winning streak.

Two days before topping the Fever in Indiana, Phoenix lost by 17 points to the then winless Washington Mystics.

“If anything is going to happen during a season, I’d rather win against the good teams and lose once in a while against a team not as good, rather than beat bad teams and not be able to beat good teams,” Mercury forward Kelly Schumacher told the East Valley Tribune. “It shows our potential. We just have to get consistent with it.”

Until Phoenix gives an equal effort every night, we’ll take the points anytime Phoenix is heavily favored.

    Pick: Mystics +10

Boston Red Sox at Atlanta Braves (ESPN | 7:35 PM ET)
Boston starter Julian Tavarez has lasted beyond the sixth inning just twice in 12 starts. The right-hander has gone 3-0 with a 3.65 ERA in his last six outings. EDGE: RED SOX
Tavarez is 4-3 with a 5.28 ERA in 31 appearances, including only three starts, against Atlanta. He'll have to overcome a couple of Braves who have hit him very well in the past. Chipper Jones is 9-for-14 versus Tavarez and Edgar Renteria is 8-for-16. EDGE: OVER
Braves right-hander Buddy Carlyle has never faced the Red Sox and hasn't received more than three runs of support in any of his five starts. EDGE: UNDER
The UNDER is 9-3-1 in the last 13 meetings in Atlanta.
