    Six-pack for Tuesday

-- Orioles canned Sam Perlozzo, are looking at Joe Girardi as a replacement. When does Cal Ripken come to the rescue? It would make more sense to hire an Oriole to fix that mess.

-- Oh, maybe the manager isn't the real problem? Maybe it is the owner? Maybe Ripken should put together a group to buy the franchise, then become the manager.

-- Milwaukee rookie Gallardo looked pretty good in his big league debut, and even hit a double, winning his first start in big leagues, 5-4 over the Giants.

-- Edwin Jackson was leading 3-2 with two out in fifth, but had some injury issue with his right hand; they removed him from game, one out short of being eligible for his first win in 13 starts this season. Hammel was tough in relief.

-- Chone Figgins went 6-for-6 in Angels' wild 10-9 win over Astros. Houston led 9-4 going to bottom of seventh inning.

-- Detroit led 9-1 in sixth inning, then held on for dear life, as Nationals had Young up in 9th, down 9-8, with two men on and no one out. Closer Jones escaped the jam.

Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but........

      13) I can't stand the Bronx Bombers, but I'd like to know one thing; where are all the disloyal, umappreciative nitwits who were calling for Joe Torre's head? If a guy won four titles for my team as a skipper, he'd have permanent icon status. You don't hear much from the nitwits these days..........

      12) Watching the US Open this weekend, it brought a smile to my middle-aged face to see guys wearing white belts again. I know I still have pair of white shoes upstairs from the good ol' days in the late 70's. Not sure my white belt survived.

      12) Padres have scored one run in four Chris Young starts in 2007, but San Diego won three of those games, thats what a solid hurler Young has been this season.

      11) When the Phillies traded for Freddy Garcia, there was no physical examination involved, which seems stupid when you look at how many innings Garcia has logged over the years (1,318 innings over last six seasons). Whoops.

      10) To add to their woes, Phillies also sent Gio Gonzalez, an ace pitching prospect who Phils acquired in Thome trade, to back to the White Sox in that deal. Truly an awful trade.

      9) Angels trailed 9-4 in 7th inning at Anaheim, then scored 5 runs to tie game; when inning ended on play at first, Houston pitcher Qualls took the ball, chucked it into the upper deck, on the first base side of the stands. Never saw that before.

      8) The Chiefs are really going to start '07 season with Brodie Croyle at QB? Didn't he have lot of trouble staying healthy in an 11-game season at Alabama? Why wouldn't they look into adding Daunte Culpepper, for insurance?

      7) Great news for Cal basketball coach Ben Braun, as DeVon Hardin pulled out of NBA Draft, making Golden Bears a legit contender for NCAA bid. Hardin is a solid big guy who might be a top 10 pick in draft next year, if things go well.

      6) Giant pitcher Matt Cain lost his last two starts 1-0, giving up two runs in 15 innings; Giants lost his last six starts, with a total of ten runs scored by SF in those six games. He might be the best 2-7 pitcher in the last 25 years.

      5) When Mike Keenan coaches Calgary Flames this fall, it'll be 8th NHL team he has coached. Problem is, since winning the Stanley Cup with the Rangers in '94, Keenan has won just one playoff series. Not very good for 13 years' work.

      4) A's brought Kurt Suzuki, their catcher of future, to the big leagues June 12; since then, Jason Kendall, who was batting .194 at the time, has gone 12-26, raising his batting average to .225. Nothing like seeing your replacement eye-to-eye.

      3) If the baseball playoffs started Tuesday morning, there are the eight teams that would be playing.........
      NL: Mets-Brewers-Padres-Arizona
      AL: Red Sox-Indians-Angels-Detroit

      2) Sometimes, you can tell what team think of their opponents by what giveaways they have when that team is in town. This weekend, the A's are visiting Shea Stadium; on Friday, first 25,000 fans gets a Rollabana. After that, on Saturday, first 12,000 kids get a Mr Met t-shirt, then on Sunday, it is Paul LoDuca Bobblehead Day. Solid giveaways.

Apparently, the Mets don't think a whole lot of the A's.

      1) Good news for all strippers in the Denver area; ARod is in town; should be a fun week for everyone.

            Tuesday, June 19

            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

            Tuesday’s MLB betting notes

            Posada repositioned

Today the Yankees start a three-game series at National League side Colorado, followed by another three games at San Francisco. With Mike Mussina set to pitch twice on the road trip, Joe Torre has a problem.

He has made the light-hitting Wil Nieves (.122 batting average) Mussina’s personal catcher, pushing regular catcher Jorge Posada (batting .347) to the designated hitter role on those days. With no DH allowed on this trip, Torre will have to shuffle the pack to get Posada’s bat in the lineup.

The most likely option open for Torre is to use Posada at first base. In fact, Posada reportedly took grounders in yesterday’s batting practice and looks set to start there when Mussina is scheduled to pitch - Tonight in Colorado and Sunday in San Francisco.

The Yankees are –157 favorites to take the first game in Colorado.

            Snell’s costly chicken Caesar

Only days after pitching his first Major League complete game, Ian Snell will have to miss his scheduled start tonight – and it’s all because of a botched dinner attempt. After avoiding questions all day Sunday about why he would miss the start, the Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher finally caved.

"It's a burn blister." Snell went on to tell how he burned his finger while grilling chicken for a salad he was preparing for himself.

To add insult to injury, the chicken Caesar salad wasn’t even worth it, "It wasn't one of the best ones," he said, rolling his eyes.

Snell has been dominant lately, allowing only three earned runs in his last 24 innings, while lowering his ERA to 2.63, the fifth-lowest ERA in the league. Lefty Tom Gorzelanny (6-4, 3.04) will make the start against the Mariners in the series opener in Seattle tonight.

            Exceeding expectations

With right-hander Freddy Garcia out for at least two months, the Philadelphia Phillies are looking for a long-term replacement for him in their rotation. For now they seem to have settled on rookie Kyle Kendrick, who is scheduled to make his second major league start in Cleveland on Tuesday.

Kendrick made a respectable debut on Wednesday, allowing only three runs in six innings while striking out four. He left with the game tied and the Phillies eventually pulled out the win, with Kendrick getting the no decision.

"We'll see," said manager Charlie Manuel when asked if he would be a regular starter. "I was happy with his outing. He showed good poise. He took us to a place in the game. He actually did better than I thought he would."

The Phillies are +132 underdogs on the back of Kendrick’s start tonight.

            Thumb master

Seattle Mariners third baseman Adrian Beltre, who had a cortisone shot in his injured left thumb on Friday, looks set to return to the lineup for a three-game series at Safeco field against the Pirates.

Beltre suffered the injury June 1 and missed the next five games. He's been unable to play regularly since and is wearing a brace on the thumb. Beltre is batting .266 this season, with nine home runs and 27 RBI so far.

Seattle is a –120 favorite to take the first of a three game series against Pittsburgh tonight, with Miguel Batista (7-5, 5.10 ERA) starting.

Manager-less Orioles look for road relief

The Baltimore Orioles have lost seven straight games, all at Camden Yards. They have just 16 wins at home this season and only three teams in the American League have a worse home-field record. That form ultimately led to the firing of manager Sam Perlozzo on Monday.

Perlozzo will be replaced on an interim basis by bench coach Tom Trebelhorn, with reports suggesting that the Orioles are keen on signing former Florida Marlins manager Joe Girardi as a long-term replacement.

After spending the last few games getting booed at home, a three-game series at San Diego offers the Orioles staff and players a chance to play with a little less pressure on them.

The Orioles are huge underdogs at +230 as Steve Trachsel (5-4, 3.94) faces the Padres’ Jake Peavy (8-1, 1.82) on the mound.

            Sosa’s chase continues

Sammy Sosa took a break from his pursuit of 600 homers on Sunday, staying out of the Texas Rangers lineup. Tonight the chase continues against his former club, the Chicago Cubs.

Entering Sunday, Sosa was hitting just .247, but he had 11 home runs and was tied for sixth in the American League with 51 RBIs. He is 14th in the AL with a .354 batting average with runners in scoring position. Cubs manager Lou Piniella was full of praise for Sosa ahead of tonight’s series opener.

"He's had a great career," Piniella said. He was well loved in Chicago for a long, long time, and 600 home runs is a lot of dingers. That's usually a free pass to the Hall of Fame."

The Cubs, -137 favorites, send Sean Marshall (3-2, 2.12 ERA) to the mound tonight to test his stuff against the Ranger’s Robinson Tejeda (7-5, 5.10 ERA).

              Injury Report

              Tuesday, June 19

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

              MLB Infirmary Report

Randy Johnson is the latest big name to hit baseball's disabled list, as a bad back knocked The Big Unit out of action. Here are the latest notes from around the diamond:

              Arizona - Randy Johnson - P - 15-Day Disabled List
The Diamondbacks placed Johnson on the disabled list with a sore back on Saturday, but the team is hoping that he can return to the mound once his 15 days are up. That means the target date for The Big Unit's return to Arizona's rotation is June 26.

              Baltimore - Ramon Hernandez - C - 15-Day Disabled List
Hernandez was sent to the disabled list for the second time this season on June 7 with a groin injury. He should also be able to return to the field immediately after his 15 days.

              Chi Cubs - Aramis Ramirez - 3B - 15-Day Disabled List
Ramirez was originally restricted to pinch-hitting duties when his knee became sore last week, but the team then decided to place him on the disabled list and let him rest the ailment. The slugging third baseman can be activated from the disabled list this week.

Chi White Sox - Darin Erstad - OF - 15-Day Disabled List
Chi White Sox - Scott Podsednik - OF - 15-Day Disabled List
Erstad has been out of action for the White Sox since the end of May with an ankle injury, and the team decided not to activate him on the weekend. He should return to the lineup this week. Podsednik (groin injury) could also be activated in the next week.

              Detroit - Kenny Rogers - P - 60-Day Disabled List
Rogers (shoulder injury) has been pitching in the minor leagues on a rehab assignment, and if the Tigers like what they see from him he'll be activated and pitch this weekend.

LA Angels - Garret Anderson - OF - 15-Day Disabled List
The oft-injured Anderson is back on the disabled list with a hip injury. He won't be back with the team until the start of July, so Reggie Willits will assume his duties in the lineup.

NY Mets - Moises Alou - OF - 15-Day Disabled List
              NY Mets - Pedro Martinez - P - 15-Day Disabled List
Alou might be out the Mets' lineup for the rest of the month with his quad injury, as the problem hasn't improved much since he's been eligible to come off the DL (back on May 29). Martinez has been throwing bullpen sessions, and should be back in August.
NY Yankees - Jason Giambi - DH - 15-Day Disabled List
Giambi's foot injury might end up being the least of his problems if Bud Selig suspends him for not co-operating with the league's steroids probe. Giambi went on the disabled list with his sore foot on May 31, opening up the Yankees' DH spot for Johnny Damon.

              Oakland - Rich Harden - P - 15-Day Disabled List
Oakland - Mike Piazza - DH - 15-Day Disabled List
              Oakland - Huston Street - P - 15-Day Disabled List

Harden is scheduled to make a rehab appearance at AAA Sacramento this week, and if his shoulder feels fine he'll then be activated from the disabled list. Piazza is already on a rehab assignment with his shoulder injury, but he might not return to the A's until early July. Street (elbow injury) has been seeing specialists and there's no timetable for him.

              Philadelphia - Tom Gordon - P - 15-Day Disabled List
              Philadelphia - Brett Myers - P - 15-Day Disabled List

Gordon has been battling both a shoulder injury and an illness, and he's working on getting healthy at the team's spring training facility. Flash could be back on the roster by the end of June. Myers was expected to be activated from the disabled list on Monday.

              Seattle - Adrian Beltre - 3B - Day-to-Day (sore thumb)
Beltre's sore thumb has seen him in-and-out of the Mariners' lineup for the past couple of weeks, and he missed their series on the weekend. He's expected to avoid the DL.

              St. Louis - Chris Carpenter - P - 15-Day Disabled List
Getting ace starter Carpenter back in the rotation would be a huge boost for the Cardinals, but the righthander isn't likely to return from elbow surgery until August.

              Toronto - A.J. Burnett - P - Day-to-Day (strained shoulder)
Burnett missed his last start with a strained shoulder, and it's looking like he'll miss his start this week as well. The righthander, who has a history of injuries, could end up being placed on the disabled list early this week when the team brings in a replacement.

                Baseball Today - June 19

                SCOREBOARD

                Tuesday, June 19

Minnesota at N.Y. Mets (7:10 p.m. EDT). Johan Santana and Jorge Sosa are each looking for win No. 7.

                STARS Monday

-Chone Figgins, Angels, went 6-for-6 and drove in the game-winning run in the ninth inning to lift the Los Angeles Angels over Houston 10-9.

-Joe Blanton, Athletics, gave up one run in eight innings to help Oakland defeat Cincinnati 6-1.

-Cliff Lee, Indians, allowed one run and five hits in seven innings and Cleveland routed Philadelphia 10-1.

-Brian McCann, Braves, homered and drove in four runs to lead Atlanta past Boston 9-4.

-John Maine, Mets, pitched 7 1-3 innings, giving up one run on four hits to help the New York Mets top Minnesota 8-1.

                NO K'S FOR CURT

Curt Schilling failed to strike out anyone in Boston's 9-4 loss to Atlanta on Monday. It was the first time that's happened in one of his starts since July 1, 1993, a span of 348 starts. Schilling has endured a lingering hangover from his near no-hitter at Oakland on June 7, which was broken up with two outs in the ninth. In his last two starts, he's given up 19 hits and 11 earned runs in 9 1-3 innings. It was just the third time in his career Schilling did not record a strikeout in a game he started.

                FIRED

Sam Perlozzo was fired as manager of the Baltimore Orioles on Monday, the result of his inability to bring last-place Baltimore out of a lengthy funk culminated by an eight-game losing streak. The Orioles were 27-27 and second in the AL East on May 31 before losing 13 of 15 in June. Their 29-40 record is the fifth-worst in the major leagues. Bullpen coach Dave Trembley will be the interim manager when the Orioles begin a six-game trip in San Diego on Tuesday.

                JUST SHORT

Detroit had to withstand a three-run ninth-inning rally against closer Todd Jones to defeat Washington 9-8 on Monday. Trailing 9-5, Cristian Guzman hit a two-run triple and Felipe Lopez followed with an RBI single but Jones got Ronnie Belliard to ground out with runners on the corners for the final out to preserve the win.

                0-FOR-TAMPA BAY

Tampa Bay defeated Arizona 10-2 on Monday, giving the Devil Rays a 7-0 all-time record against their 1998 expansion partners.

                STREAKS

So Taguchi extended his hitting streak to 11 games in St. Louis' 5-3 loss to Kansas City on Monday. ... San Francisco lost their fifth straight game, falling to Milwaukee 5-4.

                SNAPPED

Casey Blake had his 26 game hitting streak snapped in Cleveland's 10-1 win over Philadelphia on Monday. The streak had been the longest in the major leagues this season.

                SPEAKING

''It's embarrassing. I never gave us a chance. You want to walk around the room and apologize to everybody. Your manager, your teammates, fans. There's no excuse for a game like that.'' - Boston hurler Curt Schilling, on his second-shortest outing of the season in the Red Sox's 9-4 loss to Atlanta on Monday. Schilling was rocked for 10 hits and six runs in 4 1-3 innings.

                SEASONS June 19

1941 - En route to 56, Joe DiMaggio hit in his 32nd consecutive game, going 3-for-3, including a home run, against the Chicago White Sox.

1942 - Paul Waner got hit number 3,000 - a single off Rip Sewell - but the Boston Braves lost to the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-6.

1952 - Brooklyn Dodger Carl Erskine pitched a 5-0 no-hitter against the Chicago Cubs at Ebbets Field.

1961 - Roger Maris' ninth-inning homer off Kansas City's Jim Archer was his 25th of the year, putting him seven games ahead of Babe Ruth's pace in 1927.

1973 - Cincinnati's Pete Rose and Willie Davis of the Los Angeles Dodgers both collected their 2,000th hits. It was a single for Rose against the San Francisco Giants and a home run for Davis against the Atlanta Braves.

1974 - Steve Busby of the Kansas City Royals hurled his second no-hitter in 14 months and gave up just one walk in beating the Brewers 2-0 at Milwaukee.

1977 - The Boston Red Sox hit five home runs in an 11-1 triumph over the New York Yankees on June 19. The five homers gave the Red Sox a major league record 16 in three games. Boston hit six homers on June 17 and five on June 18, also against the Yankees. In the series the Yankees had no homers.

2001 - Ellis Burks hit three homers in a 10-9 Cleveland loss to the Twins.

2006 - San Francisco rookie Matt Cain carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning in the Giants' 2-1 victory over the Los Angeles Angels. Chone Figgins lined a single to center with two outs in the eighth to end Cain's no-hit bid. The 21-year-old Cain allowed the one hit and an unearned run while walking four and striking out 10.

Today's birthdays: Claudio Vargas, 29; Bruce Chen, 30; Doug Mientkwiewicz, 33.

                  Tuesday, June 19

                  HOT

Brad Penny (Los Angeles Dodgers) - It looks like Penny is well on his way to becoming the NL starter in his second consecutive All-Star game. The veteran hurler is 8-1 with a spectacular 2.18 ERA and 1.17 WHIP and is 7-1 in his last eight starts outside Dodger Stadium. In his last start against Toronto on June 8, the right-hander gave up one run and five hits with seven strikeouts leading the Dodgers to a 4-3 victory. Oddsmakers list the Dodgers as -126 road favorites against the Jays tonight.

Jake Peavy (San Diego Padres) - The NL West leading Padres have to feel good about their chances when Peavy takes the mound. The dominant right-hander is 8-1 with an NL leading 1.82 ERA and 1.00 WHIP and is 4-1 with a 2.55 ERA and 1.13 WHIP at Petco Park. Furthermore, the Padres are 6-1 in Peavy's last eight starts as a favorite and the Padres are listed as -240 favorites against the Baltimore Orioles.

Ben Sheets (Milwaukee Brewers) - The Brewers send Sheets to the mound to face Barry Bonds and the San Francisco Giants. The right-hander is 2-0 with a 1.45 ERA in his last three starts and is 2-2 with a 2.84 ERA in five career starts against the Giants. The veteran starter is 7-3 with a solid 3.31 ERA and 1.21 WHIP and is a stellar 4-1 with a 2.91 ERA and 1.19 WHIP at Miller Park. Oddsmakers list the Brewers as -170 favorites against the Giants.

                  COLD

Kip Wells (St. Louis Cardinals) - Wells is rapidly approaching a record he would rather not reach. The 10-year veteran hopes to avoid a major league-leading 12th loss tonight against the St. Louis Cardinals. The veteran right-hander is 2-11 with a 6.93 ERA and 1.64 WHIP and is 1-4 with an equally lofty 6.09 ERA and 1.65 WHIP at Busch Stadium this season. The struggling starter is 0-3 with a 21.85 ERA in his last three starts against the Kansas City Royals.

Doug Davis (Arizona Diamondbacks) - Interleague play hasn't been kind to left-hander Doug Davis. The veteran hurler is 0-2 against AL teams this season and is 0-5 with a 7.48 ERA in his last six interleague starts. The longtime starter is 4-8 with a 3.70 ERA and 1.67 WHIP and hasn't faced the Tampa Bay Devil Rays since 2003 and is 1-1 with an 8.36 ERA in four meetings with Tampa Bay. Oddsmakers list the Diamondbacks as -125 favorites against the Devil Rays at Chase Field.

Lady luck: Tuesday’s best WNBA bets

                    Sacramento Monarchs at Chicago Sky (+3 1/2, 142 1/2)

After 11 games the Chicago Sky have surpassed last year’s win total. Playing Chicago is no longer a gimme game as Connecticut learned after Sunday’s 13-point loss.

“We have a great new coaching staff, a lot of new players… the team is just gelling,” Sky leading scorer Candice Dupree said after the latest victory. “Making the playoffs is definitely one of our goals. We’ve won six games so far, and there are a lot more games to go.”

The books have been slow to jump on the Sky bandwagon. Chicago has been favored in only one of its 11 contests this season.

Chicago faces its toughest team so far when it hosts the Monarchs tonight. Sacramento’s strength is its defensive intensity. They can quickly take hold of a game with numerous defensive stops that lead to quality chances for their offense.

Still Dupree and the Sky should be able to keep this game close. Sacramento essentially played two exhibition matches last week against the Houston Comets, so they’re not going to be as sharp as they should be.

                    Pick: Sky

                      NY Yankees at Colorado
The Yankees are hot (winners of 11 of last 12), but they run into a pretty hot team themselves in the Rockies tonight. Colorado has won 10 of its last 14, including taking a series in Boston in which the Rockies scored 19 runs in the two victories. They followed that up by scoring 22 runs in the first two games against Tampa Bay over the weekend. Overall the Rockies have hit 19 HRs during the 14-game stretch, with Matt Holliday (.571 average, 7 RBI in last 5 games) continuing to tear it up. At home, the Rockies look like a good underdog pick (+170) according to Dunkel, which has Colorado favored straight up by 1. Dunkel Pick: Colorado (+170). Here are all of today's games.
