    Six-pack for Monday

-- Major league umpire Ted Barrett used to be a sparring partner for heavyweight boxing champion Larry Holmes.

-- Nationals' AAA farmhand Brandon Watson has hit in 43 consecutive games, breaking a 95-year old record. Why is this kid not in Washington? He is hitting .341 in AAA, but hit .176 in 68 career major league ABs in previous seasons.

-- Indians are 9-2 in Fausto Carmona's last 11 starts, after a streak where Carmona had lost 11 consecutive decisions.

-- The Orioles lost their last eight home games. Not good.

-- Mets lost eleven of their last thirteen games. One of the best July 31/trade deadline subplots is going to be how the big market Mets spruce up their roster. They need it. Peter Gammons said Sunday night that hittest rumors are Mets pursuing Mark Buehrle and Brad Lidge.

-- Read Jim C. e-mailed us with a great stat: Saturday was first day since 1963 that there were 1-0 games at Wrigley Field and Fenway Park on the same day.

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend

      13) Big week in Argentina; Spurs win NBA title with Ginobili and Oberto; now Angel Cabrera wins the US Open. Cabrera had won three European Tour events before Sunday; now he has 10-year exemption on the American tour. With his limited English skills, will he take it? His life could be turned totally upside down, in a very profitable way.

      12) The DA in Durham got disbarred on a Saturday? It took this long, they couldn't want until Monday?

      11) Not only did pro poker player Eli Elezra win a bracelet at the World Series of Poker (his first), he won $250,000 on side bet that he had made for $25,000 (at 10-1) that he would win a bracelet during the WSOP this summer. Big day for him.

      10) Much credit to Phil Hellmuth on his 11th WSOP bracelet, but looking at the prize list for that event, and the first name I recognized was Tom McEvoy, at #207. He might be ducking strong fields to have better shot at winning bracelets.

      9) Meanwhile, the field Allen Cunningham beat to win a fifth WSOP bracelet was star-studded, a much tougher group. It will make for good viewing on ESPN, when they show it later on this summer.

      8) By way of clarification from something I wrote a few weeks ago, dogfighting is illegal in all fifty states, but only in Idaho and Wyoming is it a misdemeanor. It is a felony elsewhere.

      7) With the feds now involved in the Michael Vick episode, it is not good the Vick or the Falcons. Lester Munson, a legal expert for ESPN, didn't paint an optimistic picture for Vick.

      6) Let me see, Kobe Bryant earned $17M last year, and will earn $88M over the next four; he ran Shaq out of LA, and he is complaining because the team isn't good enough? It takes a lot of onions to break up a championship team, then bitch because the team isn't of championship caliber. Good lord.

      5) Prince Fielder hit an inside-the-park homer, his 25th HR of season; last guy to lead league in homers, and have an inside park homer in that same season was Dale Murphy, in 1984.

      4) Umpire Cuzzi did plate for Verlander's no-hitter Tuesday; in his previous game behind plate, he worked Schilling's game at Oakland when he had a one-hitter. But using umpires to pick totals exclusively is dangerous stuff, since Kulpa was in Ohio for Rangers-Reds Sunday, two teams with zero pitching. 10.5 total had no chance; all three games this weekend went over.

      3) Mets missed the boat on Kaz Matsui when they had him; Matsui is hitting .320 in Colorado. New York fans made him a scapegoat for all the problems their teams had in the era just before Omar Minaya became GM. Matsui batting #2 behind Jose Reyes would be a damned good top of the lineup.

      2) Anyone remember in late 70's/early 80's, when more than a few pro golfers used orange golf balls? They showed up on TV better, but faded out. When I was a kid, I would never hit an orange ball on a water hole; didn't want to lose one.

      1) With all credit to Ginobili, Cabrera and all things having to do with Argentina,. I'd be more impressed if an Argentinian was skating for the Anaheim Ducks, the Stanley Cup champs.

The San Francisco slugger hit his 748th career homer off former teammate Tim Wakefield and moved within seven of tying Hank Aaron's record in the Giants' 9-5 loss to Boston on Sunday. VERLANDER'S ENCORE

Justin Verlander didn't quite match his no-hit performance from Tuesday night, but he pitched well enough to earn his eighth victory of the season in Detroit's 7-4 win over Philadelphia on Sunday. Verlander gave up three runs on seven hits and struck out six to improve to 8-2 on the season.

                  INSIDE-THE-PARK

Lew Ford lost Prince Fielder's ninth inning pop-up in the Metrodome's white roof to allow the 262-pound Fielder to rumble around the bases for an inside-the-park home run in Minnesota's 10-9 victory over Milwaukee on Sunday. ... Gary Matthews Jr. rounded the bases for an inside-the-park homer after Dodgers right fielder James Loney attempted to backhand Matthews' drive to the wall and crashed into an auxiliary scoreboard with an audible thud. He was taken off the field in a cart with a bruised right knee.

                  STREAKS

And luckily he stayed away and Bay made the catch.'' - Pittsburgh center fielder Nate McLouth, on left fielder Jason Bay's game-saving catch in the ninth inning of the Pirates' 8-7 win over the Chicago White Sox on Sunday. Jim Thome hit a long fly-ball that Bay caught leaning against the outfield wall. A young fan in the front row backed off his pursuit of the ball moments before it landed in Bay's glove.

1986 - California's Don Sutton pitched a three-hitter for his 300th career victory as the Angels beat the Texas Rangers 5-1. The 41-year-old right-hander became the 19th pitcher in baseball history to win 300 games.

2002 - Luis Castillo tied Rogers Hornsby's 80-year-old record for the longest hitting streak by a second baseman, beating out a dribbler to the pitcher in the sixth inning to make it 33 games in a row, in a 2-1 Florida win over Cleveland.

                    HOT

Cole Hamels (Philadelphia Phillies) - Sophomore sensation Cole Hamels is 9-2 with a solid 3.47 ERA and an intimidating 1.16 WHIP. The lefty leads the NL in wins and strikeouts (104) and is 14-3 in his last 17 starts as a favorite. Tonight he faces the Cleveland Indians at Jacobs Field and oddsmakers list the Phillies as -119 road favorites.

John Lackey (Los Angeles Angels) - It can't get much better for John Lackey and the Angels. Lackey can become the majors' first 11-game winner when the AL West-leading Angels host the lowly Houston Astros tonight. Overall, the veteran right-hander is 10-4 with a menacing 2.53 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP. He's 4-2 with a 2.68 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP at Angel Stadium. Lackey is also 4-1 with an unbelievable 1.82 ERA against the NL since the start of 2005 and is listed as a -191 favorite.

                    COLD

Edwin Jackson (Tampa Bay Devil Rays) - It's been two years since Edwin Jackson won his last major league start and he doesn't appear to be any closer to snapping the streak. The right-hander is 0-8 with a bloated 8.20 ERA and a 1.97 WHIP in 12 starts for the Devil Rays. The veteran hurler has allowed more than five runs in three of his last five starts and is 0-3 with a 6.08 ERA outside Tropicana Field. Jackson is 1-1 with a 2.40 ERA in three career appearances against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Odalis Perez (Kansas City Royals) - Odalis Perez can't be looking forward to meeting Albert Pujols and the St. Louis Cardinals. Pujols tagged Perez for three RBIs last week and owns a startling .684 BA with five HRs, two doubles and 15 RBIs against the veteran left-hander. Perez is 3-7 with a 6.19 ERA and 1.67 WHIP this season and is 2-3 with a 5.05 ERA and 1.49 WHIP outside Kauffman Stadium. Oddsmakers list the Royals as +152 road underdogs.

                      Monday, June 18

Boston Red Sox at Atlanta Braves: (+126, 8 ½)

Rise and shine. The Red Sox’s snoozing bats are starting to wipe the sleep from their eyes after struggling to put runs on the board against earlier interleague opponents.

Boston began to find its swing this weekend against the San Francisco Giants and looks to carry it over to a nine-game road swing, starting with Monday’s game in Atlanta.

The Red Sox took two of three games against the Braves in May and have won six of the last seven games against their interleague rival.

                      Pick: Red Sox -134

Philadelphia Phillies at Cleveland Indians: (+109, 9 ½)

Phillies left-hander Cole Hamels faces the Indians for the first time on Monday night. The 23-year-old is the National League leader in both wins (nine) and strikeouts (104) in only his second major league season.

"Cole's pitched outstanding all year," Phillies second baseman Chase Utley told MLB.com. "You feel if you get a one- or two-run lead, he's going to hold it for you. He has the kind of stuff to dominate teams."

Philadelphia has won 10 of Hamels' 14 starts this season, including eight of his last nine, while providing more than seven runs in support of their sophomore star in each of his last eight victories.

                      Pick: Phillies -117

Minnesota Twins at New York Mets: (-151, 8 ½)

Twins right-hander Carlos Silva is a collective 15-22 since 2006 and posts an ERA just above 4.00 this season. However in Silva’s most recent appearance, the six-year pro goose egged the Braves in nine complete innings for only the second shutout of his career.

Silva, who will have to hit during Monday’s interleague matchup, is facing a slumping Mets lineup. New York has scored three or fewer runs in seven of its last 10 games, although Silva is 0-1 with a monstrous 10.22 ERA versus the Mets in 15 career appearances.

                      Pick: Twins +143

                        Minnesota at NY Mets
The Mets' slide has continued as New York dropped its fifth straight series over the weekend to the Yankees and has now lost 11 of its last 13. New York starter John Maine is just 1-4 with a 4.72 ERA over his last six starts, including a 4-1 loss to the Dodgers in his last start in which he gave up three HRs on three consecutive pitches. Minnesota's Carlos Silva is coming off his best outing of the season as he tossed an eight-hit shutout against the Braves last Wednesday. The Twins look like a good underdog pick (+160) in this one according to Dunkel, which has Minnesota favored straight up by 1. Dunkel Pick: Minnesota (+160). Here are all of today's games.
