    Six-pack for Sunday

-- Whats gotten into the Cubs? They get into a fight a week You almost expect to see the Undertaker warming up in the bullpen, or the Grand Wizard coaching third.

-- Carlos Beltran was 0-6 Saturday, stranding nine runners, and making last out with bases loaded. Can't remember guy having that bad a day, stranding nine runners.

-- Giants were not happy with plate umpire Reliford against Matsuzaka Saturday; they bitched on some calls, while C Molina held lot of pitches, hoping to get similar calls.

-- Check out the NL Central standings, and tell which team is going to catch the Brewers. I say, on June 17, that only the Brewers can keep the Brewers from AL Central crown.

-- You follow baseball, you learn medical terms, thats how often these guys get hurt. Intercoastals are the cartilage between the ribs, and Eric Chavex hurt his Friday night.

-- Happy Father's' Day to everyone. I think I have the best dad in the world; hope you feel the same way about yours.

        MLB Betting Notes

        Sunday, June 17

        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

        Sunday’s MLB betting notes

        Flip-flop at Camden Yards

Daniel Cabrera had been pegged to start on Sunday afternoon against the Arizona Diamondbacks, but the Baltimore Orioles flipped Cabrera and Saturday’s scheduled starter Brian Burres in the rotation to give Burres an extra day of rest for his sore shoulder.

That means Sunday’s series finale looks like even more of a pitching mismatch as defending NL Cy Young Award winner Brandon Webb takes the hill against Burres, who’ll make his seventh career start.

Burres was actually a profitable starter before his recent shoulder woes. He won Orioles backers 2.69 units in his five starts between May 11 and June 5, allowing only one home run in 26 2/3 innings pitched and a 2.36 ERA.

While Burres limited the opposition’s ability to make solid contact, it’s mildly alarming that he walked 15 batters over those five starts, none of which went deeper than six innings.

        The master returns

Greg Maddux steps onto a familiar pitcher’s mound this afternoon as his San Diego Padres take on the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field. Maddux won 95 games with the Cubs between 1986 and 1992 and another 38 in his second stint in Chicago between 2004 and 2006.

It’ll be the future Hall of Famer’s second start at Wrigley this season. Maddux allowed three runs in five innings on April 17 in a 4-3 Padres win as -117 road favorites. It was a rare bit of road success for San Diego when Maddux pitches – the Padres have won only one of Maddux’s subsequent half-dozen starts away from home.

Cubs starter Rich Hill has faced San Diego once this season as well, somehow allowing four home runs in six innings at spacious Petco Park in a 5-1 Padres win on May 22. The Cubs lost that game as +157 road underdogs.

Duke no longer royalty in Pittsburgh

The Pittsburgh Pirates thought they had a gem when Zach Duke tore through National League batters after he was called up to the big leagues in mid-2005. Things have gone downhill for the southpaw and Steeltown sportswriters suggested that Duke would be best served by a return to the minors earlier this month.

Compare Duke’s digits through 14 starts in 2007 to those of his rookie year, when he also had 14 starts:

        2007: 3-6 W-L, 5.54 ERA, 1,68 WHIP, 2.9 K/9IP, 1.3 K/BB, allowing a HR every 8.7 innings

        2005: 8-2 W-L, 1.81 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, 6.2 K/9IP, 2.5 K/BB, allowed a HR every 28.2 innings

Duke might catch a break on Sunday with the Chicago White Sox visiting PNC Park. The ChiSox have easily the worst MLB offense for the month of June and were held to nine runs in their recent four-game series in Philadelphia.

Hand injury won’t keep Kazmir from starting

The new ace was toppled Friday, requiring the “old” ace to return to form.

The Colorado Rockies roughed up Tampa Bay Devil Rays starter James Shields on Friday night, handing the 25-year-old right-hander his first loss of the season. Shields had been so effective through the first two months of the season that he’d essentially supplanted Scott Kazmir as Tampa Bay’s top starter.

Kazmir, still only 23 years old despite his considerable MLB experience, can reassert himself as the D-Rays top dog this afternoon at Coors Field. Bettors can rest assured that he’ll take the hill despite the fact he strained a muscle between his index and middle finger during a play at the plate on June 11.

"It's going to bother me for about two months, but I think it's going to help me," Kazmir told the Bradenton Herald after the game. He told the paper that the injury forced him to alter his grip, which might not be a bad thing considering his struggles so far in 2007.

"I threw some nasty sliders after that," Kazmir said, and his season-high tally of 11 strikeouts in just six innings backs him up.

            San Francisco at Boston
The Giants forgot to bring their bats to this series as they are 0-for-16 with runners in scoring position against the Bosox so far and just 1-for-29 in RBI situations during their current three-game skid. With that lack of offense, San Francisco will need a good pitching performance today and should get one out of Matt Morris. The veteran right-hander has posted quality starts in all eight of his appearances since the beginning of May and is coming off his third complete game of the season in a 4-3 win over Toronto on Monday. Needing to salvage a win in the series, the Giants look like a good underdog pick (+170) according to Dunkel, which has San Francisco favored straight up by 1/2 a run. Dunkel Pick: San Francisco (+170). Here are all of today's games.

                  Sunday, June 17

San Francisco Giants at Boston Red Sox (-176, 9 ½)

The Red Sox continue to win despite their troubles at the dish. Excluding Friday’s 10-run outburst, Boston has scored only seven runs in its last five games. If you’re looking for the reason why the team isn’t producing offensively, look no further than the top of the batting order.

Boston signed Julio Lugo to a four-year $36 million contract in the offseason to be the everyday shortstop and leadoff hitter, but he’s batting just .210 and is now at the bottom of the order.

“It’s been hard for me,” Lugo told the Boston Herald. “I know things are not going right now. I try my best. I know that my average is not nearly where I want it to be. It’s been really difficult. Things are not working out, but everybody goes through it. I just want to grind it out.”

Red Sox manager Terry Francona has tried an assortment of players in the leadoff spot since Lugo lost the job last week. Center fielder Coco Crisp and right fielder J.D. Drew have each had audition’s batting first in a revamped order.

                  Pick: Giants +168

Tampa Bay Devil Rays at Colorado Rockies (-120, 9 ½)

Elijah Dukes may no longer be a distraction to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. The troubled outfielder reportedly impregnated a 17-year-old and his estranged wife requested a restraining order against him because of alleged threatens.

Dukes was not in the Rays lineup for the fourth consecutive game and he might not be with the big club much longer. Right fielder Delmon Young has temporarily taken over duties in center with Jonny Gomes handling right.

“I think Delmon looks fine in centerfield, so I just want to keep giving Jon his opportunity right there,” Rays manager Joe Maddon told the Saint Petersburg Times. “I love his hustle. He’s made three great plays since he’s been back. He’s swinging the bat great.”

Maddon insists Dukes isn’t playing because of “baseball” reasons but surely his problems off the field are a diversion for the team. Rocco Baldelli is expected to return from injury in time for Friday’s game, probably sealing a ticket to the minors for Dukes.

                  Pick: Devil Rays +112

St. Louis Cardinals at Oakland Athletics (-159, 9 ½)

How do the Oakland Athletics continue to win without their key players? Staff ace Rich Harden hasn’t pitched since April, designated hitter Mike Piazza hasn’t taken a swing since May 2, right fielder Milton Bradley has been on the DL three separate times this season and closer Huston Street won’t be back until after the All-Star break.

And yet the A’s still get by.

Oakland’s seven games above .500 and just five games back of the division-leading Angels.

The re-enforcements should soon be back with Oakland. Piazza is expected to return for the start of this weekend’s series against the New York Mets and Harden should be making some spot relief appearances soon before returning to the rotation.

                  Pick: Athletics –159

                    Hot

Matt Morris (San Francisco Giants) - If the Giants are going to steal a game in their interleague series against the Red Sox, Morris would be the best bet to lead them. The right-hander leads the Giants' starters with a 7-3 record and 2.56 ERA and pitched a complete game in his last outing, a 4-3 win over the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday. The Giants are +168 underdogs at Fenway today and books list the total at 9 1/2.

Brian Bannister (Kansas City Royals) - The Royals are -112 home favorites behind Bannister this afternoon when they host the Florida Marlins. The right-hander has seen recent success in three straight wins, in which he pitched 22 innings and gave up just one earned run. After a weak start to the season, Bannister has evened out his record at 3-3 and boasts a 2.91 ERA. Books have set the run total at 9 1/2 for Bannister's first start against the Marlins.

Chien-Ming Wang (New York Yankees) - Wang allowed just one run and six hits over six innings in his last start, a 4-1 win over the D-Backs. He looks to stretch his winning streak to four when he faces the Mets tonight. The righty holds a 6-4 record with a 3.49 ERA in 69.2 innings this season but has never faced the Yankees. Books list the Mets as +169 underdogs and have set the total at 9 1/2.

                    Cold

Kevin Millwood (Texas Rangers) - Millwood has five losses and two no-decisions in his last seven starts for the worst losing streak of his career. His ERA jumped to a miserable 10.05 in his last five losses, and he gave up eight hits and six runs in 4 1/3 innings of his last start Tuesday in Pittsburgh. The right-hander takes the mound today when the Rangers face the Reds as +140 road underdogs. Books have set the total at 10 1/2.

Jeff Suppan (Milwaukee Brewers) - The odds are stacked against Suppan and the Brewers today. Suppan takes the mound today against the nagging Minnesota Twins who have dealt the right-hander 8 losses (5 wins) in 17 career starts. He has not faced the Twins since 2002 but has also not won at the Metrodome since 1999. Suppan has lost five of his last seven decisions and risks pushing his losing streak to three games today. Books list the Crew as +129 road dogs and have set the total at 9.
