    Six-pack for Friday

-- The Spurs are the best team in the NBA; six of their guys were born in other countries, and a seventh (Brent Barry) is son of one of the greatest players in NBA history.

-- San Antonio has a selfless core of players, then adds to it with role players who have either won titles, or are hungry to get that first championship ring.

-- Don't forget David Robinson; he could have stiffed Spurs when he came out of college; if he had, the franchise would have moved out of Texas. Instead, this franchise is now the model, and the Admiral is one of those responsible.

-- It is weird that the Spurs won four titles in nine years, but have not repeated. I guess Spurs are an odd-year team.

-- When will American basketball people look at the Suns and Spurs and realize that teams with many shooters on it are the teams that are the hardest to defend? Its not like this is a great secret, but you'd think it was.

-- If I were advising a young basketball prospect, I'd advise him to do these things:

    1) Become as athletic and strong as you can, strong in the lower body, not so much the upper. Upper body strength is for looking good at the beach.
    2) Become the best shooter and passer you can.
    3) Embrace defense. A coach will always find minutes for a player who can stop opposing players.

      Weekend Sports Preview

Major League Baseball steps into the sporting spotlight this weekend as interleague play continues with a number of interesting matchups. The best include Atlanta at Cleveland, San Francisco at Boston, the Mets at Yankees, Detroit at Philadelphia, Milwaukee at Minnesota and the Angels at the Dodgers.

The rest of the interleague schedule includes Arizona at Baltimore, the White Sox at Pittsburgh, Washington at Toronto, Texas and Cincinnati, Seattle at Houston, Florida at Kansas City, Tampa Bay at Colorado and St. Louis at Oakland. The lone National League series has San Diego taking on the Cubs.

Meanwhile just outside Pittsburgh, the world's best golfers will continue to tiptoe their way around the multi-faceted challenge that is Oakmont Country Club at the U.S. Open. Unheralded Englishman Nick Dougherty (-2) and Argentinian Angel Cabrera (-1) were the only two players to shoot below par after Round 1 action on Thursday, while Tiger Woods shot 71 to sit three strokes behind heading in to Round 2 on Friday.

The playoffs are looming in the AFL as Week 16 kicks off on Friday with a jam-packed schedule. Friday night’s lone contest has Georgia visiting Orlando (+3), but there are five games on Saturday, including Columbus at Philadelphia (-8.5), Tampa Bay at Grand Rapids (+7.5), Nashville at Kansas City (-7.5), New York at Dallas (-14) and Arizona at San Jose. Two games follow on Sunday, as Austin visits New Orleans (-2.5) and Las Vegas takes on Los Angeles (-16).

Five games fill the WNBA schedule on Friday, including Phoenix at Indiana, Los Angeles at Washington, Connecticut at Detroit, New York at Chicago and Houston at Seattle. On Saturday Indiana faces Detroit, New York heads to San Antonio, Los Angeles battles Minnesota and Houston travels to Sacramento. There’s only one game on tap for Sunday, as Chicago takes on Connecticut.

The drivers of NASCAR roll into Michigan International Speedway this Sunday for the Citizens Bank 400. Kasey Kahne won this race last season, but hasn’t come close to seeing the checkered flag this year. Jimmie Johnson is the favorite at Michigan at 4/1 odds, while points leader Jeff Gordon comes in at 6/1.

And Formula 1 heads to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Sunday for the United States Grand Prix. Lewis Hamilton is coming off his first career win last week in Montreal and he’ll be looking for another win to extend his lead in the points standings. History won’t help bettors much in this race, as retired driver Michael Schumacher had won at Indy the last four years.

              Baseball Betting Notes

              MLB

              MLB Betting Notes

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

              Friday’s key MLB betting notes

              Riling the Rocket

The New York Mets are on a five-game losing streak as they head into their subway series with the Yankees, but there is reason to expect a win for the NL squad in the first game on Friday.

The Mets face the Yanks' Roger Clemens knowing that he's 3-5 with a 5.14 earned run average that in 10 career regular season starts against them. That is easily his highest ERA against any team; the Philadelphia Phillies are next highest, at 4.33. Every other team is under 4.00 against Clemens.

The Mets will need every advantage they can get; they are 6-16 against the Yankees in the teams' last 22 meetings.

Right-hander Oliver Perez, who is 6-5 with a 3.21 ERA in his 12 starts this season, gets the call to oppose Clemens. Not surprisingly, given the Yankees eight-game winning streak, they are –158 favorites to win the series opener.

              Cubs, Lilly get off light?

Chicago Cubs starter Ted Lilly (4-4, 3.96 ERA) escaped Sunday night’s incident with Atlanta without a suspension and is set to make his scheduled start against the San Diego Padres on Friday.

Lilly basically missed his entire start Sunday after he was ejected just ten pitches into the game for allegedly throwing at Braves shortstop Edgar Renteria. MLB dished out a fine but no suspension to Lilly.

There is an upside for the Cubs. Lilly starts the three-game series against the Padres on nine days rest. Chicago is a –142 favorite to take Friday’s game.

              Smoltz settles for Saturday

Originally scheduled to pitch Friday, Atlanta Braves pitcher John Smoltz has instead opted for a Saturday start against the Cleveland Indians to help recover from injury. Smoltz has struggled since late May with a right shoulder problem.

In his place, the Braves will send Buddy Carlyle (1-1, 4.91 ERA) to the mound to pitch the opener of a three-game series in Cleveland.

Carlyle allowed four runs through 6 1/3 innings in a loss to Cubs in his last start. The Braves are +200 underdogs to beat the Indians on the back of his third start of the season

              Road improvement needed

Vicente Padilla takes the mound on Friday looking to help the slumping Texas Rangers to a much needed win against the Cincinnati Reds. Padilla pitched a no-decision against Milwaukee on Sunday after missing his previous start because of irritation in his right triceps.

The right-hander’s numbers do not make good reading; the Rangers are 2-11 this season when Padilla starts. On the road this year, he is 0-5 in seven starts with a 8.74 ERA.

Padilla has a 3-2 record in 13 career games against the Reds, which includes five appearances as a starter. The Rangers are +131 underdogs in the opener of the three-game series.

              Shield-ing his bullpen

Tampa Bay Devil Rays starter James Shields seems to have found a solution to his team's bullpen problems – he just does the work himself.

Shields, who takes the mound Friday against the Colorado Rockies, has given the Devil Rays seven-plus innings of work in ten consecutive starts. In fact, he has gone eight innings or longer in six of his 13 starts this season.

Shields has a 6-0 record for the year, with seven no-decisions. The Devil Rays are –119 favorites.

              Darin’s DL decision

Chicago White Sox outfielder Darin Erstad could make his return from the 15-day disabled list on Friday.

Erstad, who was out with a sprained left ankle, has been taking flips and batting practice the last few days, as well as testing his mobility with running drills. The center fielder has a .264 batting average with 21 RBI for the season.

The White Sox start a three-game series against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday looking to snap a three-game losing streak. Chicago are -115 with John Garland (4-3, 3.42 ERA) set to take the mound.

              The battle of L.A.

The Angels make the short trip to Dodger Stadium to take on their city-rivals. The Angels have lost three of their last six, while the Dodgers have won their last three.

The Angels are 5-0 in the last five meetings between these teams and are +115 underdogs to take the first game of the series with Ervin Santana (5-6, 5.25 ERA) on the mound.

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lady luck: Friday’s best WNBA bets

Los Angeles Sparks at Washington Mystics (+2, O/U 151)

Has Tree Rollins finally turned the Mystics' dismal season around? Washington won its first game of the season Wednesday night against the Mercury and there are more smiles in the locker room now that the team is no longer winless.

“It was a weight off our shoulders,” said Rollins, who took over for former coach Richie Adubato two weeks ago. “As an organization, as a team, as a staff, the weight is off.”

Perhaps the best news for Washington backers came from the words of Mystics star Alana Beard.

“Every positive adjective that you can possibly think of is the best adjective to explain the way that I’m feeling right now, the way that the team is feeling,” Beard said after the victory. “It feels good considering the slump that we were in. We were setting records on the losing side, and you don’t want to do that.”

The Mystics guard has been bothered by pain in her shoulder all season, but you wouldn’t be able to tell checking out the boxscores. Beard is averaging 18.4 points and almost three rebounds a night.

Washington is in high spirits while the Sparks are still trying to figure out their identity after the retirement of their leading scorer, Chamique Holdsclaw. The six-time All-Star announced her decision on Monday and the Sparks failed to cover against the winless Comets on Wednesday.

                Pick: Mystics

                Phoenix Mercury at Indiana Fever (-8 ½, O/U 156)

The real WNBA championship may take place when Detroit and Indiana play in the Eastern Conference finals. Indiana is on pace to finish the season 31-3 and it’s not all because of Tamika Catchings.

The Fever have the most balanced starting lineup in the league. Tammy Sutton-Brown, Tamika Whitmore and Tan White are each averaging 11 points a night.

“Anybody can step up on any given night,” Catchings after Wednesday’s 90-62 win. “We had a balanced scoring attack. That’s going to be a key thing for us as we look to win a championship – not focusing on one person or two people.”

Meanwhile, the season hasn’t been progressing well for Phoenix backers. Many people were expecting big things from the Mercury after a full season in coach Paul Westhead’s offensive system, but the results have been inconsistent.

They've beaten a very good Sacramento Monarchs team twice, but they were on the wrong side of the Minnesota Lynx's and Mystics' first wins of the season.

                Pick: Fever

                Houston Comets at Seattle Storm (-9 ½, O/U 157 ½)

Don’t be fooled by the Comets near-win Wednesday night against the Sparks. The Comets covered (as we predicted they would) only because of the state of chaos the Sparks were in. Nothing’s changed, Houston still stinks.

The Storm, on the other hand, are better than their 90-62 loss against the Fever suggests. Indiana’s zone defense held Seattle to 39.1 percent shooting and 2-for-19 shooting from long distance.

“If I were a coach, the next game, I would play zone against us by the way we played against their zone tonight,” Storm leading scorer Lauren Jackson said.

You can bet Seattle coach Anne Donovan had her team practicing its zone offense in practice on Thursday.

                Pick: Storm

                    Washington at Toronto
The Nationals have been a tough draw on the road as they have won five of their last six on the current road trip, including a just-completed three-game sweep over the Orioles in Baltimore. Overall Manny Acta's team has won 10 of its last 12 away from home, which is a primary reason the Nats have moved to within 8 games of the slumping Mets in the N.L. East. Washington will have a tough assignment tonight against Toronto ace Roy Halladay, but the Nats have played some of their best ball against baseball's best pitchers with wins already over Jake Peavy, John Smoltz, Cole Hamels and Johan Santana. Washington looks like a decent underdog pick (+245) in this one according to Dunkel, which has the Nationals favored straight up by 1/2 a run. Dunkel Pick: Washington (+245). Here are all of today's games.

                      Streaking Pitchers

                      Friday, June 15

                      Hot

Jeremy Bonderman (Detroit Tigers) - Bonderman faltered in his last outing, allowing six runs and eight hits in six innings against the Mets but has won his last six starts. He brings his 3.63 ERA to the mound at Citizens Bank Park when the Tigers face the Phillies tonight as -118 road faves. Bonderman has struck out 34 in 34 innings on the road.

C.C. Sabathia (Cleveland Indians) - Sabathia looks to earn a win for his fifth straight decision when the Indians host the struggling Atlanta Braves tonight as -223 favorites. The left-hander is 9-1 with a 3.09 ERA and has not given up a run in 18 innings.

James Shields (Tampa Bay Devil Rays) - The Devil Rays stink again this year, but if there is any sign of hope it might just be starter James Shields. Shields is 6-0 with a 3.04 ERA and is riding a three-game winning streak. He has never faced the Rockies but brings a 3-1 interleague record to Colorado tonight. Sportsbooks list the Rockies as slim -105 favorites and have set the run total at 9.

                      Cold

Mike Bacsik (Washington Nationals) - Bacsik was retired after just five innings in a 6-3 loss to the Minnesota Twins Sunday. He is 1-3 for the season with a 4.34 ERA and looks to avoid his fourth-straight loss tonight when the Nationals face the Jays in Toronto. Books list the Jays as heavy -244 favorites and have set the total at 8 1/2.

Gil Meche (Kansas City Royals) - Meche is working on snapping a five-game losing streak, during which he posted a dismal 5.76 ERA. The Royals host the Marlins tonight as -112 home favorites. The right-hander is 3-6 with a 3.16 ERA for the season and has lost his last two interleague starts. Meche gave up four runs in five innings in his only start against the Marlins, a 5-4 loss in 2005.

                          Friday, June 15

Detroit Tigers at Philadelphia Phillies (+110, 9)

The Tigers almost always packs a potent offense, but they’re crossing the plate even more frequently than usual when Jeremy Bonderman takes the hill.

The average Detroit score in Bonderman’s 11 starts in 2007 is 7.1 to 4, which explains Bonderman’s 1.000 winning percentage. All of his wins have come over his last six starts when the Tigers’ average score has been 10 to 3.7. Detroit won as a favorite in each of those half-dozen starts and only once failed to deliver on the moneyline.

Philadelphia starter Jon Lieber pitched a complete-game shutout in his last start, but that was against the Kansas City Royals. The Royals’ lineup isn’t hitting .337 and slugging .529 for the month of June. Detroit’s lineup.

Carlos Guillen’s status is still iffy due to a hamstring injury, but he said after yesterday’s loss that he’d like to suit up in Philadelphia tonight. With six other Tigers regulars hitting over .350 for the month, Guillen’s return would just be icing on the cake.

                          Pick: Tigers -118

Florida Marlins at Kansas City Royals (-112, 8 ½)

Gil Meche is the anti-Bonderman as far as offensive support goes. The Royals’ $55-million man has pitched well this season, but Kansas City has given him only 3.4 runs of support per start and only 1.6 over his last five. Not surprisingly, all five recent starts resulted in losses for Meche.

The Royals are consistent underdogs but they’ve still managed to be a money-losing team in 2007 due to their rotten 13-23 home record. They’re in tough tonight against the Marlins, whose 18-16 record away from Miami has netted consistent road backers 6.00 units of profit.

The Fish send Sergio Mitre to the mound at Kaufmann Stadium tonight. Mitre maintains the lowest profile of the young Florida starters, but that won’t be the case for long if he keeps up his current form. He has an insane 0.99 ERA in his seven post-April starts and while his durability can be questioned, the fact that Mitre hasn’t allowed more than two earned runs in any of those seven starts cannot.

                          Pick: Marlins +104

Tampa Bay Devil Rays at Colorado Rockies (-105, 9)

Tampa Bay’s trophy case has stayed fairly empty since the club commenced operations in the 1990s, but that wouldn’t be the case if MLB had an award for worst bullpen. Tampa Bay would annually be in contention for the hypothetical prize and might be favored to take the 2007 title.

Luckily for the D-Rays, the relievers get a break every fifth day when James Shields starts. The youngster with the unblemished record has pitched at least seven full innings in each of his last 10 starts. He’s not wearing out his arm in the process, either. Shields has peaked at 111 pitches over that span, a number that even the most cautious pitching coach would approve.

Oddsmakers are on to Shields, setting Tampa Bay as a favorite in five of his last six starts. The D-Rays are 4-2 in those games, 4-1 when favored.

The Rockies have been playing well in June, but are bound for a letdown after back-to-back wins over Curt Schilling and Josh Beckett of the high-profile Boston Red Sox.

                          Pick: Devil Rays -103

                              HEAVENLY

With a 9-7 win over Cincinnati on Thursday, the Angels reached 17 games over .500 for only the second time in franchise history. Their 42-25 mark also represents the best start in franchise history. Since May 9 the Angels are on a 25-9 tear, the best in the Majors.

                              CATCHING FIRE

Andy Pettitte breezed for eight innings and the Yankees won their ninth straight game, beating the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-1 Thursday. The Yankees finished off another sweep - they brushed aside Pittsburgh last weekend - and extended their longest winning streak since a 10-game run in 2005.

                              HIGH AND LOE

Kameron Loe, called up earlier Thursday from Triple-A Oklahoma, allowed five hits and struck out a career-high seven over eight innings in Texas' 6-0 win over Pittsburgh. Loe was sent to Oklahoma last week after giving up nine runs in 2 2-3 innings in an 11-4 loss to Detroit. He entered the game with a 7.40 ERA and on a personal six-game losing streak since winning his first start of the season April 21.

                              SPOILER

Mike Redmond capped a three-run rally in the ninth inning with an RBI single for Minnesota against Atlanta closer Bob Wickman, ruining Tim Hudson's strong start and lifting the Twins to a 3-2 victory over the Braves on Thursday night.

                              SWING AND A MISS

Craig Monroe tied the major league record for strike outs in a nine inning game when he whiffed five times in Detroit's 6-5 loss to Milwaukee on Thursday. Monroe had a chance in the ninth with the tying run on third and one out, but he went down swinging against Brewers' closer Francisco Cordero.

                              ROYAL DRUBBING

Mark Teahen had two triples and five RBIs and Tony Pena Jr. went 4-for-4, leading Kansas City past St. Louis 17-8 for the Royals' first series win at home against the Cardinals in six years. The Royals have averaged 9.57 runs in their seven wins this month, including a 17-5 drubbing last Sunday of Philadelphia.

                              STREAKS

Los Angeles' Chone Figgins extended his hitting streak to 13 games to match his career high, in a 9-7 win at Cincinnati on Thursday. ... San Diego's Justin Germano beat Tampa Bay 7-1 to win his fifth straight decision since being promoted from Triple-A.

                              STRONG IN DEFEAT

Tim Hudson pitched 7 1-3 scoreless innings in Atlanta's 3-2 loss to Minnesota on Thursday night.

                              SPEAKING

''He didn't even get a chance to work on his stuff. So I guess he's smarter than us. All we had to do was tell him.'' - Texas manager Ron Washington on pitcher Kameron Loe. Recalled on Thursday from Triple-A Oklahoma as an injury-replacement starter, Loe tossed eight shutout innings for the Rangers in a 6-0 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates.
