        Baseball Today - June 14

        SCOREBOARD

        Thursday, June 14

Colorado at Boston (7:05 p.m. EDT). Josh Beckett looks to improve to 10-0 on the season for the Red Sox.

        STARS Wednesday

-Jake Peavy, Padres, gave up two hits in seven innings in San Diego's 9-0 win over Tampa Bay.

-Carlos Silva, Twins, pitched a complete game for his second career shutout and Minnesota knocked off Atlanta 6-0.

-Adam Wainwright, Cardinals, allowed one hit in a career-high eight innings in St. Louis' 7-3 victory over Kansas City.

-Aaron Rowand, Phillies, hit a grand slam and drove in five runs to lead Philadelphia past the Chicago White Sox 8-4.

-Ian Snell, Pirates, pitched his first career complete game and Pittsburgh topped Texas 8-1.

-Vladimir Guerrero, Angels, drove in four runs in the Los Angeles Angels' 6-3 win over Cincinnati.

        THREE FIRSTS

San Francisco starter Tim Lincecum, catcher Guillermo Rodriguez and reliever Jonathan Sanchez each got their first career hits in the Giants' 7-4 loss to Toronto on Wednesday. The last time three players on the same team collected their first career hits on the same day was Sept. 20, 1998, by Atlanta's Mark DeRosa, Wes Helms and Bruce Chen at Arizona, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. The last time it happened when September roster expansion wasn't in effect was April 19, 1962, by the expansion Houston Colt .45s at Wrigley Field. According to Elias, Johnny Weekly, Pidge Browne and Merritt Ranew all got their first hits.

        NOT SO AMAZING

LOS ANGELES (AP) - The Los Angeles Dodgers beat the slumping New York Mets 9-1 on Wednesday night to complete a three-game sweep. The sweep was the Dodgers' first over the Mets in Los Angeles since August 1996. The Mets, beaten 5-3 and 4-1 in the first two games of the series, have lost five straight and nine of 10.

        DROUGHT OVER

Jason Kendall homered in Oakland's 7-3 win over Houston on Wednesday for the first time since May 31, 2006, a span of 157 games and 619 at-bats. It ended the second-longest drought in the majors among active players and was just his second homer in his last 406 games.

        PAYBACK

After walking three times during Justin Verlander's no-hitter on Tuesday night, Bill Hall hit a go-ahead, two-run homer in the eighth inning to lift Milwaukee over Detroit 3-2 on Wednesday.

        STREAKS

Casey Blake extended his hitting streak to a career-high 22 games in Cleveland's 7-3 win over Florida on Wednesday. ... The New York Yankees beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-2 to extend their season-high winning streak to eight. Bobby Abreu stretched his hitting streak to 12 games in the win. ... Curtis Granderson extended his career-best hitting streak to 13 games in Detroit's 3-2 loss to Milwaukee.

        SNAPPED

The Chicago Cubs beat Seattle 3-2 on Wednesday to snap the Mariners' season-high five-game win streak.

        SPEAKING

''I went online and watched every out he got. I was not quite Verlanderish today. But I'll take it.'' - St. Louis hurler Adam Wainwright, on taking a no-hitter into the sixth inning of the Cardinals' 7-3 win over Kansas City on Wednesday, a night after Detroit's Justin Verlander pitched a no-hitter against Milwaukee. Wainwright gave up one hit in eight innings to even his record on the season at 5-5.

        SEASONS June 14

1952 - Warren Spahn of the Boston Braves struck out 18 Cubs in a 3-1, 15-inning loss to Chicago. Spahn also homered.

1963 - Duke Snider hit his 400th career home run to highlight a 10-3 triumph by the New York Mets over the Cincinnati Reds at Crosley Field.

1965 - Jim Maloney struck out 18 and no-hit the New York Mets for 10 innings, but Johnny Lewis' lead-off home run in the 11th inning gave the Mets a 1-0 win.

1969 - Reggie Jackson of Oakland knocked in 10 runs with two homers, a double and two singles against the Red Sox in Boston. In the eighth, he drove in three runs with a single when he easily could have made second base. Oakland won 21-7.

1974 - Nolan Ryan struck out 19 batters in 12 innings to help give the California Angels a 4-3 win over the Boston Red Sox in 15 innings. Cecil Cooper of the Red Sox struck out six times in the game.

1978 - Pete Rose of the Cincinnati Reds had two hits in a 3-1 triumph over the Chicago Cubs to start his 44-game hitting streak.

1995 - Mike Benjamin went 6-for-7, setting a major league record with 14 hits in three games, and drove in the winning run in the 13th inning as the San Francisco Giants beat the Chicago Cubs 4-3.

2002 - Aaron Boone hit a pair of homers - one in the ninth inning to tie the game and one to win it in the 11th - off Pittsburgh closer Mike Williams as Cincinnati beat the Pirates 4-3.

2002 - With all 14 interleague games - and one NL game - taking place in National League parks, the DH was not employed anywhere throughout major league baseball.

2005 - Seattle's Ichiro Suzuki became the third player since 1900 to reach 1,000 hits in fewer than 700 games when he singled in the bottom of the first inning in Seattle's 3-1 win over Philadelphia. Suzuki's 1,000th hit came in his 696th game. Chuck Klein reached the mark in 1933 in 683 games, and Lloyd Waner reached it in 1932 in 686 games.

2005 - Chris Carpenter pitched a one-hitter and struck out 10 to lead St. Louis to a 7-0 win over Toronto.

          Thursday, June 14

San Diego Padres at Tampa Bay Devil Rays (-101, 9)

The outfield is causing Tampa Bay some headaches. Delmon Young, normally the everyday right fielder, had to play center last night because Elijah Dukes, and B.J. Upton were both unavailable.

“That’s how I feel about playing centerfield,” Young told the St. Petersburg Times after last night’s 9-0 loss. “I’ll do it because I have to, but I prefer to be in right.”

Dukes will return to center tonight after sitting out yesterday for personal reasons. A 17-year-old girl told Tampa Bay newspapers two days ago that she is pregnant with Dukes’ child.

The Rays received more bad news when they learned second baseman B.J. Upton will probably be out until the end of the month because of a strained left quadriceps.

“It’s disappointing,” Upton said. “The way it felt I didn’t think it would be this long.”

Center fielder Rocco Baldelli is still a few weeks away from returning because of his hamstring injury, so the club recalled Jonny Gomes to fill Upton's spot on the roster.

          Pick: Padres –108

Atlanta Braves at Minnesota Twins (-181, 7 ½)

Chipper Jones returned to the Braves lineup last night but he wasn’t in his customary three-hole in the lineup. Braves manager Bobby Cox put Jones in the cleanup spot with Kelly Johnson, Willie Harris and Edgar Renteria batting first through third.

“What do you do with the other three guys?” Cox said to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. They’re the hottest hitters we have.”

Some Atlanta reporters suggested the move was made because of the struggles of Andruw Jones at the plate. Jones, who hit fifth yesterday, is batting .217, the second-lowest average among National League regulars. The new order drops Jeff Francoeur, who has eight home runs and a team-high 45 RBIs, to the seventh spot in the lineup. The changes make the Braves' batting order strong from top-to-bottom.

Backing Minnesota's Johan Santana hasn’t been profitable so far this season. The defending AL Cy Young award winner is just 6-6 this season and the Twins have lost in six of his last nine starts.

          Pick: Braves +173

St. Louis Cardinals at Kansas City Royals (+102, 10 ½)

The Cardinals sparkplug shortstop David Eckstein is hobbled with back pain. He left last night in the fourth inning because of the injury and he is scheduled to visit a chiropractor this morning.

“He’d take a step and his back goes out of whack,” Cardinals manager Tony La Russa told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. “It gets a little uneven. When that happens, it affects his leg and it affects his back, so he’s going to get an adjustment and we’ll see how he is.”

If Eckstein doesn’t play today it will hurt the Cards. The 2007 World Series MVP bats leadoff for St. Louis where he's hitting .457 in his last 21 games. He had two hits and scored twice before leaving yesterday’s game.

          Pick: Royals +102
