    Six-pack for Thursday

    The Alan Embree edition........

-- Before this season, Embree had eight saves in 708 career appearances. This year for A's, Embree has saved seven games in eight chances. He has been Godsend with Street, Duchscherer both on the disabled list.

-- Alan Duane Embree broke into pro ball with Burlington of the Appalachian League back in 1990; since then, he played for seventeen different teams, nine in major leagues.

-- He has pitched in playoffs in seven different seasons, for five different teams, pitching only 21.2 innings in 24 games.

-- Despite still being an effective pitcher at age 37, he has been traded straight up for luminaries such as Dante Powell Russ Springer and the immortal Derek Hasselhoff.

-- He has been on disabled list five times, filed for his free agency three times; if nothing else, with all his trades and moves, Embree should be an expert packer.

-- Despite being from Pacific Northwest and pitching for nine big league teams, he has never played for Mariners. Embree did win a World Series ring with Boston in 2004.

      Thursday's List of 13:

      13) I started this website six years ago today; it has been fun and educational. Thanks to all of you for reading, and giving your input on what you like and don't like. Hopefully, Year 7 will be just as much fun, as we explore the world of sports.

      12) At one time, thirteen major league teams had artificial turf fields; now, only the three domes in Minnesota, Toronto and St Petersburg have turf. None of those are NL cities, so when an NL team goes to one of those places for interleague play, they're on carpet for first time all season.

      11) Weirdest turf field was when White Sox has grass in their outfield, but had an artificial turf infield at Comiskey Park. It didn't last long, but was an interesting idea.

      10) Dan Gilbert is 44 years old and owns the Cavaliers; he is ranked the 354th richest person in America, with a net worth of $1.1B. At various times in his earlier days, he had delivered pizzas and been arrested on suspicion of being a bookie (the charge was later dropped). If I were him, the next time Lebron James' contract came up, I'd make him part owner of the team.

      9) I missed where the Cowboys signed Brad Johnson to back up Tony Romo this year, for a $2.5M pricetag. Solid move.

      8) There is good article on espn.com about Steve Hagen, an assistant coach at North Carolina, who in his 24 years in the coaching profession, has coached in fourteen different places The life of an assistant football coach is quite often nomadic. Carolina Panthers' coach John Fox once coached in different places seven years in a row.

      7) Odd stat: Mets lost nine of their last ten games, but scored first in each of their last six games.

      6) When Dodger 7-8-9 hitters hit consecutive homers against Mets Tuesday, with pitcher Kuo hitting the third one, it was first time in baseball history that team's 7-8-9 hitters had hit consecutive homers, with the pitcher hitting the third one.

      5) By the way, how quickly things change; Chapter II of this year's Subway Series finds the Bronx team red-hot, while the Queens team looks like death. It was quite the opposite when these teams met for first time this season.

      4) The baseball players' union should be ashamed of the way they've handled the Elijah Dukes situation; the Devil Rays are not allowed to force Dukes to go to counseling, because the union blocked it. This guy has been arrested five times in the last three years, and threatened his ex-wife. Why would it be bad for him to get anger management counseling?

      3) Baylor Bears have an incoming freshman QB this season by name of John David Weed. If only he could be backup to Jeff Smoker, Cheech and Chong would have a favorite team.

      2) Interesting politicial decision looms on whether to select Barry Bonds to All-Star team, especially with the game out in San Francisco, where he is loved.

      1) Programming note: CBS is showing Bob Barker's last Price Is Right in primetime, Friday night at 8. I was a kid when they debuted Price is Right and Match Game in the 3-4 timeslot in the afternoon, back when gameshows were king. You wonder if CBS would be better off just ending the show, rather than choosing some poor soul to replace the irreplaceable Barker.

          NBA Finals

Cleveland had ball down 72-70 with 0:15 left, and chance to get back in series, and they let Varejeo take some kind of off-kilter leaner in lane, a hideous brick that doomed Cavaliers to deficit of 3-0, basically ending series. Question here is more of mental one; have Cavaliers given up? Do Spurs have killer instinct to sweep? San Antonio was 10-19 from arc in Game 3, Cavs 3-19, as their lack of scoring depth haunts them here. NBA deserves a ratings-killing 4-0 sweep, the way they screwed the Suns.

Houston starter Jason Jennings threw seven shutout innings in his only career start against Oakland. He allowed just one hit and struck out six in that outing. EDGE: ASTROS

#3 San Antonio Spurs at #2 Cleveland Cavaliers
              Game 4 - Thursday, June 14th, 9 p.m. Eastern (ABC)

San Antonio's Tony Parker is on his way to NBA Finals MVP honors after putting together yet another impressive performance in Game 3. Parker scored a team-high 17 points, including a huge 3-pointer with a minute remaining that proved to be the dagger. The Cavs started Daniel Gibson over Larry Hughes (inactive with plantar fasciitis) in an effort to defend Parker better, but it backfired big-time on them. Instead, Gibson spent the whole game chasing after Parker and appeared tired on the offensive end, totaling just two points on 1-of-10 shooting. Cleveland's starting point guards in this series - including Hughes in Games 1 and 2 - have now scored just four points on 2-of-20 shooting. BIG EDGE: SPURS
The Spurs are 13-4 SU in close-out games since 2003 when they won their second championship, including 2-1 in the NBA Finals. The lone loss in the NBA Finals took place in 2005 at home after they had taken a 3-2 series lead against Detroit. San Antonio still won Game 7 of that series to win title #3. EDGE: SPURS
There has been just one sweep in the NBA Finals over the last 11 years, and that came in 2002 when the Los Angeles Lakers defeated the New Jersey Nets. Ironically, the Spurs beat that same Nets team the following year for their second championship, but that series went six games. San Antonio has not been up 3-0 in any of the team's previous three trips to the NBA Finals, instead stumbling in Game 3 twice. The Chicago Bulls are the last team to take a 3-0 lead in the NBA Finals and fail to sweep, winning the 1996 title in six games over Seattle. The Spurs have not swept a playoff opponent since 2004 against Memphis, the only time they have accomplished that feat in the last eight years. SLIGHT EDGE: CAVS
Cleveland has won 10 in a row at home when scoring more than 72 points.
San Antonio is 14-3-1 ATS in its last 18 games.
Home team is 7-2 ATS in the last 9 meetings.
UNDER is 8-2 in San Antonio's last 10 road games.
UNDER is 8-3 in Cleveland's last 11 games as an underdog.

2007 NBA FINALS (HOME team in CAPS)

Spurs lead 3-0 SU & ATS
              UNDER 2-1

              RESULTS

              6/12/07 - Game 3 - San Antonio 75, CLEVELAND 72 (ATS winner: SA -1 | UNDER 179.5)
              Recap | Boxscore
Summary: San Antonio's Tony Parker nailed a huge 3-pointer with a minute left that put his team ahead 72-67, and the Cavs failed to tie the game late when given the opportunity. Cleveland's Anderson Varejao missed a layup with 13 seconds left on a pass from LeBron James that would have deadlocked the game at 72. Instead, the miss was rebounded by the Spurs, and Manu Ginobili made 3-of-4 free throws to pull them within one win of their fourth championship. The Cavs missed 16-of-19 3-point attempts and scored just 12 points in the third quarter to help the total go way UNDER.

              6/10/07 - Game 2 - SAN ANTONIO 103, Cleveland 92 (ATS winner: SA -7 | OVER 175.5)
              Recap | Boxscore
Summary: LeBron James picked up two quick fouls for the Cavs in the first three minutes of the game, which enabled the Spurs to get out to a blazing 28-17 lead after the first quarter. San Antonio then continued to surge in the second quarter, outscoring Cleveland 30-16 to take a commanding 58-33 halftime lead. The two teams combined for 60 points in the third quarter to force the pace OVER, and a huge fourth-quarter rally by the Cavs fell short after they trailed by as many as 29 points.

              6/7/07 - Game 1 - SAN ANTONIO 85, Cleveland 76 (ATS winner: SA -7.5 | UNDER 179.5)
              Recap | Boxscore
Summary: The Spurs bottled up Cleveland star LeBron James for most of the night and took charge in the third quarter, outscoring the Cavs 24-14. San Antonio extended a 5-point halftime lead to 15 heading into the fourth quarter, and that proved to be the difference. A late rally by the Cavs fell short of a cover, and the fourth turned out to be the only quarter with more than 40 combined points as the UNDER cashed easily.

              SCHEDULE

6/14/07 - Game 4 - San Antonio Spurs at CLEVELAND CAVALIERS (ABC | 9 PM ET)
6/17/07 - Game 5 - San Antonio Spurs at CLEVELAND CAVALIERS (ABC | 9 PM ET)
6/19/07 - Game 6 - Cleveland Cavaliers at SAN ANTONIO SPURS (ABC | 9 PM ET)
6/21/07 - Game 7 - Cleveland Cavaliers at SAN ANTONIO SPURS (ABC | 9 PM ET)

              REGULAR-SEASON RESULTS

Cleveland wins 2-0 SU & ATS
              UNDER 2-0

              1/2/07 - CLEVELAND 82, San Antonio 78 (ATS winner: Cleve +3.5 | UNDER 185)
              11/3/07 - Cleveland 88, SAN ANTONIO 81 (ATS winner: Cleve +5.5 | UNDER 184.5)

REGULAR-SEASON SERIES RECAP: Since these teams only played each other twice during the regular season, we will look at the last four meetings. Cleveland has won the last three meetings both straight-up and against the spread after losing the previous four. LeBron James led the way for the Cavs in the last three meetings, averaging nearly 33 points, six rebounds and five assists per game. Spurs star Tim Duncan put up solid numbers of nearly 21 points and 12 rebounds per game in the last four meetings but his supporting cast was a bit limited. Top reserve Manu Ginobili averaged 10.5 points for San Antonio in the four games and has been known to step up on a larger stage. The problem is, he will be one of the players responsible for guarding James, who should take advantage of anybody the Spurs throw at him.

                MLB Betting Notes

                Thursday, June 14

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                Thursday’s key MLB betting notes

                Abreu to the rescue

The New York Yankees have won eight in a row and 10 of 12 games, and it's due in part to Bobby Abreu's hot hitting.

Abreu is 20 for 41 in June, with 12 runs batted in over 11 games - a swift turnaround for a hitter whose May average (.208) was the worst of any calendar month in his career.

In Game 1 of the current series against the Diamondbacks, Abreu hit a three-run homer that was the key in a 4-1 win.

Abreu looks to continue the trend as the Yankees close out the series Thursday. They are an unbelievable –245 favorites for the win, with Andy Pettite set to start.

                Shooting for an even 10

Boston Red Sox starter Josh Beckett is currently 9-0 with a 2.88 and is looking to cross the 10-win threshold this season with a victory over the Colorado Rockies on Thursday.

In his previous outing, at Arizona, he went eight innings, allowed two runs and struck out eight to earn his ninth win in 11 starts. Beckett is holding the opposition to a .211 batting average.

He's 5-0 at Fenway Park with a 3.48 ERA. Lifetime against the Rockies, Beckett is 4-0 with a 2.81 ERA. Not surprisingly, the Red Sox are huge –197 favorites tonight.

                Germano good to go

San Diego Padres reliever-turned-starter Justin Germano will make his scheduled start on Thursday against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays despite taking a foul ball on the knee Sunday.

He felt no ill effects beyond a bruise. Germano yielded eight hits over five innings against the Seattle Mariners on Friday night – his shortest outing of the season far.

Germano is 4-0 with a 2.75 ERA this year and the Padres are slim –107 favorites to take the final game against Tampa Bay.

                Guillen’s gallant return

The Detroit Tiger’s Carlos Guillen seems over a right hamstring injury he suffered in Sunday’s 15-7 over the New York Mets.

The hamstring flared up when he mishandled a Carlos Delgado ground ball up the middle and he has earmarked Thursday’s clash with the Milwaukee Brewers as his likely return.

"I don't think Wednesday," Guillen said when asked about his return, "but probably the day after."

Buoyed by a no-hitter from Justin Verlander on Tuesday night, the Tigers aim to regain the lead in the NL East and are –101 underdogs in the final game of the series against the Brewers.

                Braves chipper about Jones return

Chipper Jones looks set to return to the Atlanta Braves lineup after a spell on the disabled list due to lingering pain in his thumbs.

The veteran third-baseman experienced a relatively pain-free batting practice ahead of Tuesday night's series opener against the Minnesota Twins and is expected to be in the lineup for Thursday’s series finale.

The Braves have lost 10 of 17 games since Jones went on the DL and they may use him as a designated hitter in his first game back.

                Hottest hitting team this week

The Detroit Tigers take the title of the hottest hitters of the past seven days. In 221 at bats they produced 48 runs off 75 hits and led the majors over that stretch with a combined batting average of .339.

The Tigers have won five of their last six games to move level with the Cleveland Indians at the top of the AL Central.

Detroit closes out a three-game series against the Brewers on Thursday and then travel to Philadelphia to take on the Phillies this weekend.

                Coldest hitting team this week

The San Francisco Giants have had the worst offensive week of any team in the majors. In the past 7 days they have managed just 15 runs off 51 hits in their 232 at bats.

Barry Bonds and Co. have a combined batting average of .220 in that time and, not surprisingly, have lost three of their last six games.

As if it couldn’t get any worse, the Giants start a three-game series against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park on Friday.

                Home-team umpire?

There’s good news for Houston as they close out a series against Oakland on Thursday. In umpire Mike Reilly’s last eight appearances at home plate, the home team has gone 6-2.

Even better news for the Astros: the home team has gone 21-7 in Reilly’s last 28 interleague games behind home plate.

Oddsmakers have made Houston the -105 favorites for the game.

Pick ‘n’ roll: Thursday’s best NBA bet

San Antonio Spurs at Cleveland Cavaliers (+3, 176)

When the NBA Finals began, there were only two realistic options for series MVP: Tim Duncan if the favored Spurs pulled through and LeBron James if the Cavs pulled off an upset.

Both Duncan and James were sitting on the bench during a crucial second-quarter spell in Game 3 on Tuesday night, each having picked up three early fouls. Cleveland was ahead when the stars sat down, but San Antonio took a 2-point lead into the locker room at halftime, indicative of the roles complimentary players have played all series long.

Game 1 was the Tony Parker show as the Spurs point guard continually blew by Larry Hughes and led all scorers with 27 points. Parker played well again in Game 2, but Manu Ginobili and Robert Horry each had game-changing efforts as subs as the Spurs built a 2-0 series lead. Then it was Bruce Bowen’s turn in Game 3 as the defensive pest quieted James and hit four of his five 3-pointers.

All of these non-MVP types stepping up have something in common, of course: they’re employees of the San Antonio Spurs organization.

Various Cavs have had the chance to help LeBron, but none have adequately met the task. Hughes hurt his team by playing injured. Zydrunas Ilgauskas was little more than a traffic cone in San Antonio. Sasha Pavlovic alternates between being a driving force and the invisible man. Even beloved Boobie Gibson dropped the ball, going 1-for-10 from the field in his first postseason start.

Now Cleveland’s faced with elimination and the Spurs have shown they’re the team to finish it quickly. Game 3 was the Cavs’ for the taking, but they let the Spurs’ secondary players steal it away. Game 4 might be a close one, but the Spurs’ 3-0 ATS record so far in the Finals is ignored at bettors’ own risk.

                      Pick: Spurs -3

                        Thursday, June 14

                        Hot

Ben Sheets (Milwaukee Brewers) - Sheets (6-3, 3.21 ERA) extended his scoreless streak to 18 innings after giving up five hits and striking out six in seven innings against the Rangers Saturday. He is four strikeouts away from reaching 1000 for his career when the Brewers face the Tigers today as +102 underdogs.

Josh Beckett (Boston Red Sox) - After a 12-2 loss in Game 2 of their interleague series against the Rockies, the Red Sox are firing back with ace Josh Beckett. Beckett can extend his win record to 10-0 tonight at Fenway where oddsmakers favor the BoSox at -213. The righty boasts a 2.88 ERA in 72 innings this season and an impressive 4-0 career record with a 2.81 ERA against Colorado.

                        Cold

Jason Marquis (Chicago Cubs) - Marquis started the season with five wins in seven starts but hasn't recorded a win since March 9. He gave up six runs, four hits and three hits in 1 2/3 innings in a 9-5 loss to the Braves Saturday. The right-hander brings his 5-3 record and 3.01 ERA to the mound today when the Cubbies host the Mariners as -143 favorites.

Kip Wells (St. Louis Cardinals) - Wells will try to avoid his fourth straight loss and 11th of the season when he takes the mound for the Cards in Kansas City tonight. The right-hander leads the league in losses and his 6.33 ERA is second-worst to the Rangers' Robinson Tejeda (6.49). Wells gave up three runs and seven hits in his last appearance, a 10-6 loss to the Angels Friday. Wells is 0-2 with a 7.16 ERA since his last win and 3-2 (8.75 ERA) in five starts against the Royals. Oddsmakers list St. Louis as a -107 road favorite and have set the run total at 10 1/2.

                            LA Angels at Cincinnati
While Homer Bailey wasn't sharp in his MLB debut last week, he was able to do what most Reds' pitchers haven't this year - win. Bailey threw only 63 of his 114 pitches for strikes, but limited the Indians to just two runs in five innings in a 4-3 victory. That outing looked very good compared to what Bartolo Colon has been going through lately. The 2005 AL Cy Young winner has been shaky in his last three appearances, allowing 19 runs in 14 2/3 innings with an 0-2 record. He gave up four runs, including three HRs, in just four innings of a 10-6 loss at St. Louis in his last outing on Friday. Cincinnati looks like a good underdog pick (+135) in this one according to Dunkel, which has the Reds favored straight up by 1. Dunkel Pick: Cincinnati (+135). Here are all of today's games.

                              San Antonio at Cleveland
Cleveland certainly had its opportunity to get back into the series in Game Three as the Spurs shot just 41.2 percent from the field, were outrebounded by the Cavaliers (48-41) and committed more turnovers (14-12). But Cleveland's offense once again let it down as the Cavs shot an abysmal 36.7 percent from the field (29-79) and just 15.8 percent (3-19) from three-point range. San Antonio's stifling defense has clearly worn down Cleveland with Bruce Bowen keeping LeBron James in check for the most part. James hasn't come anywhere close to the 48-point explosion he had in Game Five against Detroit and the rest of his teammates have been unable to pick up the slack. San Antonio looks in total control of this series and should close it out tonight by covering the spread (-3) according to Dunkel, which has the Spurs favored by 8 1/2. Dunkel Pick: San Antonio (-3). Here are all of today's games.
