    Six-pack for Wednesday

-- The Mets dropped eight of last nine games, and look to have no offense. Middle of their lineup has been putrid.

-- Verlander's no-hitter sends Brewers (3-12 in last fifteen on the road) deeper into the abyss of their slump.

-- Seattle beats the Cubs in 13, as Lou Piniella's dog hides for cover when the skipper goes home after game.

-- Phillies are now 10-2 in Cole Hamels' last dozen starts.

-- Giants are 2-0 since Roberts got back in lineup; which is no coincidence. Roberts helps teams win.

-- Devil Rays won seven of last nine games; could it be???

Wednesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but......

      13) AJ Burnett's last three pitch counts, before Tuesday, had been 125-117-130. Old-timers mock the pitch count, but AJ's shoulder gave out in fifth inning Tuesday, when had thrown 84 pitches and gotten fourteen outs. Bad for Toronto.

      12) In coming years, there will be gradual shift away from the big strong power pitcher, to a more durable, crafty pitcher on basis of hiim being more cost-effective. Just wait and see.

      11) Verlander's no-hitter Tuesday was first for Detroit since a Jack Morris masterpiece in 1984.

      10) As an A's fan, always liked Ron Washington, who was an excellent coach; as owner of a fantasy baseball team, I have enjoyed having Mark Teixeira as my first baseman. Not good that reports are coming out that the two despise each other, and that Teixeira is untradeable, because he is represented by scumweasel agent Scott Boras. Not a pleasant situation.

      9) 40,000 Mormon fundamentalists apparently still practice polygamy (having multiple wives); this is becoming a story because Mitt Romney, Republican presidential candidate, is a Mormon (he has come out against polygamy, which is illegal)

My question is this: are these guys gluttons for punishment, or what? More than one wife? What are the odds that both or all of them would be in good moods on the same day? Ugh.

      8) There is a 288-yard par 3 at the US Open this week. Hell, I struggle on windmill holes, and these guys are using driver on a par 3? My favorite golf hole on Tour is a 296-yard par 4 at the Hartford Open (15th hole); it is eight yards longer than the 8th at Oakmont. Should be a long weekend of grinding.

      7) USGA cut down 5,000 trees at Oakmont to get ready for the Open; apparently, lot of trees aren't necessarily good for the grass, but lot of the woodwork was done after dark, so club members wouldn't howl too loud about the tree carnage.

      6) Out at the World Series of Poker, Phil Hellmuth won 11th gold bracelet, giving him most wins ever at WSOP. ESPN will surely feature on that tournament, as well as a final table that saw Allen Cunningham beat Jeffrey Lisandro heads-up, as he won his fifth gold bracelet.

      5) If you're favorite NFL team gets mentioned in wire stories at this time of year, there is a 95% chance it is bad news.

      4) Randy Johnson will no longer make road trips if he isn't to start in that series, to save wear-and-tear on his back; guess long airplane lights are bad for his back. Either that or he was avoiding the pain in the neck known as the New York media.

      3) Story goes that A's do not promote position players until they walk in at least 10% of their at-bats in the minor leagues. This philosophy is part of why Miguel Tejada was allowed to walk from Oakland few years back; he is a hacker, and that is not what the organization preaches.

      2) Every team makes its share of good and bad deals, but this one, while little under radar, isn't looking good for Mets; they shut down reliever Ambiorex Burgos this week down in AAA while Brian Bannister is now 3-0, 0.82 in his last three starts in Kansas City. Why would anyone want Royal relievers?

      1) Dodgers have now won 94 home games in row when they led after eight innings. If you only knew how few games had a lead change in ninth inning, you might leave early and try to beat the traffic more when you went to games.

-Brian Bannister, Royals, threw seven scoreless innings in Kansas City's 8-1 win over St. Louis.

            NO-NO

Justin Verlander pitched the first no-hitter in Comerica Park history, mixing 100 mph heat with crazy curveballs to lead the Detroit Tigers over the Milwaukee Brewers 4-0 on Tuesday. Verlander struck out a career-high 12, walked four and benefited from several stellar defensive plays in the Tigers' first no-hitter since Jack Morris' gem in 1984. It was the second no-hitter of the season in the majors, with Mark Buehrle of the Chicago White Sox doing it against the Texas Rangers on April 18.

            YANKS HEATING UP

The New York Yankees beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 4-1 on Tuesday for their seventh consecutive victory. The Yankees (31-31) won for the 10th time in 12 tries following a five-game skid, reaching .500 for the first time since they were 16-16 after beating Texas on May 9. It's their first seven-game winning streak since a 10-game run in May 2005.

            TRIPLE THREAT

Wilson Betemit, Matt Kemp, and winning pitcher Hong-Chih Kuo homered off John Maine on three consecutive pitches, and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the New York Mets 4-1 on Tuesday. The Mets hadn't allowed three straight homers since April 1, 1997. Kuo became the first player born in Taiwan to hit a home run in a big-league game.

            STRONG IN DEFEAT

Kelvim Escobar struck out a career-high 14 in six innings, but the Los Angeles Angels lost 5-3 to Cincinnati on Tuesday. Escobar gave up three runs on five hits and walked one. His 14 strikeouts were the most by an Angels pitcher since Chuck Finley fanned 15 Yankees on May 23, 1995.

            STREAKS

Casey Blake extended his hitting streak to a career-best 21 games in Cleveland's 3-0 loss to Florida on Tuesday. ... David Wright extended his hitting streak to 14 games in the Mets' 4-1 loss to the Dodgers. ... Seattle topped the Chicago Cubs 5-3 in 13 innings for their season-high fifth straight win.

            SNAPPED

Tadahito Iguchi had his 13-game hitting streak snapped in the Chicago White Sox's 7-3 loss to Philadelphia on Tuesday.

            SPEAKING

''I wanted to watch the catch, but Pudge was yelling in my ear.'' - Tigers hurler Justin Verlander, on the last out of his no-hitter against Milwaukee on Tuesday. Verlander got the Brewers' J.J. Hardy to fly out to right field and catcher Ivan Rodriguez stormed the mound to hug him as Magglio Ordonez caught the ball to preserve the no-hitter and the 4-0 win.

            SEASONS June 13

1905 - Christy Mathewson of the New York Giants pitched his second no-hit game, beating the Chicago Cubs and Mordecai Brown 1-0. Mathewson and Brown matched no-hitters for eight innings. The Giants got two hits in the ninth for the win.

1912 - Christy Mathewson recorded his 300th career victory with a 3-2 triumph over the Chicago Cubs.

1921 - Babe Ruth of the New York Yankees pitched the first five innings and hit two home runs in an 11-8 victory over the Detroit Tigers.

1948 - Babe Ruth Day at Yankee Stadium drew 49,641 fans who saw Ruth's No. 3 retired and the Yankees beat the Cleveland Indians 5-3.

1957 - Ted Williams of the Boston Red Sox hit three home runs and drove in five runs in a 9-3 victory over the Cleveland Indians, making Williams the first AL player to have two three-homer games in a season.

1973 - The Los Angeles Dodgers' infield of Steve Garvey (first base), Davey Lopes (second base), Ron Cey (third base) and Bill Russell (shortstop) played together for the first time in a 16-3 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies. The quartet would set a major league record for longevity by playing 8 1/2 years in the same infield.

2001 - Texas' Ruben Sierra homered from both sides of the plate for the sixth time in his career, but the Rangers lost 5-3 to the Dodgers.

2003 - Roger Clemens reached 300 wins and became the third pitcher with 4,000 strikeouts, leading the New York Yankees over the St. Louis Cardinals 5-2. Clemens, the 21st pitcher to make it to 300, allowed two runs in 6 2-3 innings and struck out 10, raising his total to 4,006. Clemens joined Nolan Ryan (5,714) and Steve Carlton (4,136) in the 4,000-strikeout club.

Lady luck: Wednesday’s best WNBA bets

Connecticut Sun at Minnesota Lynx (+5, 160)

Forget about Minnesota’s 90-76 loss to Seattle because the Lynx are improving. Minnesota had covered in their last two games, including their first win of the season, before Saturday’s stumble.

The win, a 90-85 victory over the Phoenix Mercury last week, set the tone. “It was a good game by both teams,” Minnesota’s Seimone Augustus said after scoring 22 points in the Phoenix game. “I think it was exceptionally good for us because we came out with a lot of energy and we expected the same from them and they did a very good job of making a run towards the end. I’m just happy that we got our first win.”

The Sun have a reputation for sleepwalking through the first quarter which has hurt the team’s backers this season. In Connecticut’s four ATS losses they have been outscored 95-57 in the opening period.

              Pick: Lynx

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Houston Comets at Los Angeles Sparks (-10, 160)

Chamique Holdsclaw's turbulent WNBA career has come to an end. The Sparks' leading scorer told the team Monday she was calling it quits after only five games this season. Scoring points will be a struggle for L.A. since they're already without defending MVP Lisa Leslie due to pregnacy.

Post scorer Taj McWilliams-Franklin will be double teamed every time she touches the ball, so it will be up to her teammates to knock down open shots.

The Sparks will struggle in their first few games while adjusting to life without Holdsclaw. This should be a good opportunity for the Comets to pick up their first victory of the season.

              Pick: Comets

                Toronto at San Francisco
The Blue Jays look to salvage a game in this series behind starter Dustin McGowan, who has won two of his last three starts while lowering his ERA over two runs. After beating the Yankees and White Sox, McGowan pitched well on the road against the Dodgers in his last start (2 runs, 4 hits in 7 innings) despite getting the no-decision. His more heralded counterpart, Tim Lincecum, has not done as well recently after winning two of his first four starts. The Giants have lost Lincecum's last three starts with the rookie right-hander lasting just 4 1/3 innings against the A's last Friday. The Blue Jays look like a good underdog pick (+145) in this one according to Dunkel, which has Toronto favored straight up by 1. Dunkel Pick: Toronto (+145). Here are all of today's games.

                  Wednesday, June 13

                  Hot

Curt Schilling (Boston Red Sox) - Schilling takes the mound for the first time since his near no-hitter for the -235 favorite Boston Red Sox. The right-hander is 6-2 with a 3.49 ERA this season and will look to help the Sox stop a season-high four-game losing streak. Schilling is 2-0 with a 3.57 ERA in seven starts at Fenway this year and is 11-5 in his career again the Rockies.

Jorge Sosa (New York Mets) - Sosa, who is 6-1 with a 2.64 ERA, has won his last three starts. The right-hander is coming off his best outing of the season, allowing four hits while striking out five to beat Detroit 3-0 on Friday night. Sosa is holding opponents to a .187 batting average and that is helping under bettors. The under is 4-0-1 in Sosa's last five starts against teams with a winning record. The Dodgers are listed as -135 favorites tonight.

                  Cold

Chris Capuano (Milwaukee Brewers) - Both Capuano and the Brewers are looking to get back on track tonight against the Detroit Tigers. The left-hander, who is 5-5 this season, has gone 0-5 with a 6.89 ERA in his last six starts. Capuano matched season highs with six runs and eight hits allowed Friday versus the Rangers, walking four in four innings of Milwaukee's 9-6 loss.

Cliff Lee (Cleveland Indians) - Oddsmakers have Cleveland listed as -117 favorites to snap a four-game losing streak tonight against the Marlins. The dilemma for bettors is the Tribe will be sending Cliff Lee to the hill, who is looking to snap a five game losing streak. The left-hander hasn't recorded a win since May 18 against the Reds and has a 9.15 ERA over his last four starts.

                        Wednesday, June 13

Oakland Athletics at Houston Astros (-108, 8)

Lance Berkman will not be in the Astros’ lineup again tonight. The first baseman dropped his appeal of a two-game suspension yesterday and served the first game last night. Berkman was disciplined for coming back onto the field after already being tossed from a contest last week against the Colorado Rockies.

“It’s something we wanted to go ahead and get it over with,” Berkman told the Houston Chronicle. “We checked with the commissioner’s office and they were fairly adamant the appeal was going to do no good. In my mind, there’s no sense in dragging it out or having something hanging over my head.”

Houston won last night in extra innings without Berkman, who’s hitting .251 with eight homers and 37 RBI. Former closer Brad Lidge was given a chance to finish off last night’s contest but surrendered a game-tying dinger to Oakland's Mark Kotsay in the top of the ninth inning. He then gave up a double and threw a wild pitch but got out of the inning without giving up another run.

Oakland has given up only 11 runs in its last seven games.

                        Pick: Athletics +100

Seattle Mariners at Chicago Cubs (-140, N/A)

Seattle has won five straight, each on its final at-bat. Last night the heroes were Willie Bloomquist and Jamie Burke who both drove in run-scoring singles in the 13th inning.

“The great thing is that it’s somebody different every day who’s making the big contribution,” Bloomquist told the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

Seattle does have a few concerns. Third baseman Adrian Beltre was pulled in the eighth inning yesterday because of a thumb injury that’s been troubling him. Beltre didn't rule out a future stint on the disabled list.

“I hope not,” he told reporters. “I don’t know. But I couldn’t swing the bat after I hurt it again.”

Miguel Batista will start for the Mariners today even though he made a one-inning relief appearance just three days ago. The Cubs counter with lefty Sean Marshall, who has been solid in four starts this season. However, the Mariners are 13-3 against southpaws and the team is hitting .295 off lefties.

                        Pick: Mariners +132

Milwaukee Brewers at Detroit Tigers (-120, 9 ½)

The Brewers seek revenge today after being held hitless last night by the Detroit's Justin Verlander.

“I don’t think anybody likes to be no-hit,” Brewers manager Ned Yost told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. “We go home feeling a lot better losing, 4-0, with one hit than losing, 4-0, with no hits.”

The two left-handed starters for today have had a similar arc to their seasons. Both Chris Capuano and Mike Maroth started out with great success but are now struggling. Capuano has a 5.00 ERA in the last three starts while Maroth has a 6.16 ERA over his last three.

Even though no one hits lefties better than Detroit (.315), but Milwaukee needs to bounce back tonight.

                        Pick: Brewers +112
