Just a terrible 1-4 day on Saturday, as it seemed like every break went against us. Time to put that behind us, and bounce back today. These are my two plays..........
3 STAR: VIRGINIA TECH (-20) OVER Central Florida
With 16 starters returning from a team that went 10-4 and beat Air Force in the San Francisco Bowl, Virginia Tech has the experience and talent to make a serious run at the 2003 Big East title. Nine of those returning are from the defensive unit, which ranked near the top of the Big East and capitalized heavily on turnovers. The Hokies will face a very good quarterback from UCF. Central Florida is beginning its second season in the Mid-American Conference and will have one of the league's top quarterbacks in Ryan Schneider. Schneider passed for 3,770 yards and 31 touchdowns last season, but his supporting cast is lacking as the Knights return just four starters from a team that averaged 32.6 points per game. The Hokies should be able to contain this inexperienced offense. On the other side of the ball the Hokies have a huge advantage. Tech running back Kevin Jones may be the front runner for the Heisman. Jones had a brilliant freshman campaign in 2001, but was forced to share carries with Lee Suggs last year. Jones makes the offense go, and you can expect no fewer than 20 carries in this game against a weak Central Florida run defense. The Golden Knights’ run defense ranked 49th in the nation in 2002, allowing an average of 149.7 yards per game. After allowing only one runner to reach the 100-yard mark in their first five games, the Golden Knights allowed five backs to hit the plateau in the final seven games. Virginia Tech is 6-1 against the spread in home non-conference games over the last 3 seasons and they are 5-1 against the spread in the first month of the season over the last 3 seasons. Look for the Hokies to roll in Blacksburg!
1 STAR: KENTUCKY (-5.5) OVER Louisville
Both of these teams return 7 starters on offense and only 4 on defense, but the experience advantage goes to the Wildcats at the quarterback position. Louisville quarterback Dave Ragone is gone, but Kentucky returns their Senior quarterback, the Hefty Lefty, Jared Lorenzen. Lorenzen has shed some pounds over the off season and is said to be in the best shape of this Wildcat career. Last season he put up some great numbers, throwing for 24 touchdowns and only 5 interceptions. The Wildcat offense should be able to move the ball at will on the Cardinals. Louisville has talent on their young defense, but it might take a while to come around. Having a veteran quarterback like Jared Lorenzen will make a huge difference. Kentucky is the play here!
Good luck,
John
