        DUNKEL INDEX

        San Antonio at Cleveland
If there is any comfort for the Cavaliers after the first two games in San Antonio, it's knowing that they were down 0-2 to Detroit in the Eastern Conference finals when they headed back to Cleveland for Game Three. In that situation, LeBron James rebounded from back-to-back subpar performances with a 32-point effort that sparked the Cavs to victory in the game and eventually the series. Cleveland can also take heart in a fourth quarter effort in Game Two that cut a 29-point deficit to eight with almost five minutes left. That comeback was reminiscent of Utah's effort in Game Two of the Western Conference finals in which the Jazz shaved a 22-point lead to seven in the fourth period. Utah rode the momentum from there to a 109-83 win at home over the Spurs in Game Three -- their only win of the series. Returning home with their backs to the wall, the Cavaliers still look capable of pulling one out and are a decent underdog pick (+1 1/2) according to Dunkel, which has Cleveland favored straight up by 4. Dunkel Pick: Cleveland (+1 1/2). Here are all of today's games.

#3 San Antonio Spurs at #2 Cleveland Cavaliers

        Game 3 - Tuesday, June 12th, 9 p.m. Eastern (ABC)

A couple of huge favorable stats went out the window for the Cavs in Sunday's 103-92 Game 2 loss. Cleveland had won 16 straight games when scoring 86 points or more, and the team was 11-0 in the playoffs when star LeBron James scored more than 20 points. James scored a team-high 25 points despite sitting nearly all of the first quarter after picking up two quick fouls. The Cavs need to push the pace to stay close with the Spurs, who are clearly a better halfcourt team with more scoring options. EDGE: SPURS & OVER

San Antonio's Tony Parker could very well be on his way to NBA Finals MVP honors after dominating the first two games of this series. Parker is simply too difficult of a matchup for Cleveland's Larry Hughes, who continues to be bothered by plantar fasciitis in his left foot. Hughes has played less than half of each of the first two games, making just 1-of-10 shots from the field and scoring only two points. Look for the Cavs to adjust by playing rookie Daniel Gibson even more in Hughes' place with James also guarding him at times in order to disrupt him physically and keep him from getting easy baskets inside. EDGE: SPURS

While the Spurs have shown dominance in the first two games of this series at home, they did nearly the exact same thing two years ago against the Pistons. San Antonio outscored Detroit by 36 points combined in Games 1 and 2 before losing the next two on the road by 48, including a 102-71 rout in Game 4. In addition, it's worth noting that the Dallas Mavericks beat the Miami Heat by a total of 24 points in the first two games of last year's NBA Finals before losing four straight. The Spurs have also been blown out by 20 points or more on the road in each of the last two rounds before rebounding to advance. EDGE CAVS

Cleveland is 7-1 SU at home in the playoffs, going 5-3 ATS.
Cleveland has won 10 in a row at home when scoring more than 72 points.
San Antonio is 13-3-1 ATS in its last 17 games.
Home team is 7-1 ATS in the last 8 meetings.
UNDER is 7-2 in San Antonio's last 9 road games.
OVER is 6-2 in San Antonio's last 8 NBA Finals game.

        Head-to-Head Recaps

2007 NBA FINALS (HOME team in CAPS)

        RESULTS

        6/10/07 - Game 2 - SAN ANTONIO 103, Cleveland 92 (ATS winner: SA -7 | OVER 175.5)
Summary: LeBron James picked up two quick fouls for the Cavs in the first three minutes of the game, which enabled the Spurs to get out to a blazing 28-17 lead after the first quarter. San Antonio then continued to surge in the second quarter, outscoring Cleveland 30-16 to take a commanding 58-33 halftime lead. The two teams combined for 60 points in the third quarter to force the pace OVER, and a huge fourth-quarter rally by the Cavs fell short after they trailed by as many as 29 points.

        6/7/07 - Game 1 - SAN ANTONIO 85, Cleveland 76 (ATS winner: SA -7.5 | UNDER 179.5)
Summary: The Spurs bottled up Cleveland star LeBron James for most of the night and took charge in the third quarter, outscoring the Cavs 24-14. San Antonio extended a 5-point halftime lead to 15 heading into the fourth quarter, and that proved to be the difference. A late rally by the Cavs fell short of a cover, and the fourth turned out to be the only quarter with more than 40 combined points as the UNDER cashed easily.

        SCHEDULE

6/12/07 - Game 3 - San Antonio Spurs at CLEVELAND CAVALIERS (ABC | 9 PM ET)
6/14/07 - Game 4 - San Antonio Spurs at CLEVELAND CAVALIERS (ABC | 9 PM ET)
6/17/07 - Game 5 - San Antonio Spurs at CLEVELAND CAVALIERS (ABC | 9 PM ET)
6/19/07 - Game 6 - Cleveland Cavaliers at SAN ANTONIO SPURS (ABC | 9 PM ET)
6/21/07 - Game 7 - Cleveland Cavaliers at SAN ANTONIO SPURS (ABC | 9 PM ET)

        REGULAR-SEASON RESULTS

Cleveland wins 2-0 SU & ATS
        UNDER 2-0

        1/2/07 - CLEVELAND 82, San Antonio 78 (ATS winner: Cleve +3.5 | UNDER 185)
        11/3/07 - Cleveland 88, SAN ANTONIO 81 (ATS winner: Cleve +5.5 | UNDER 184.5)

REGULAR-SEASON SERIES RECAP: Since these teams only played each other twice during the regular season, we will look at the last four meetings. Cleveland has won the last three meetings both straight-up and against the spread after losing the previous four. LeBron James led the way for the Cavs in the last three meetings, averaging nearly 33 points, six rebounds and five assists per game. Spurs star Tim Duncan put up solid numbers of nearly 21 points and 12 rebounds per game in the last four meetings but his supporting cast was a bit limited. Top reserve Manu Ginobili averaged 10.5 points for San Antonio in the four games and has been known to step up on a larger stage. The problem is, he will be one of the players responsible for guarding James, who should take advantage of anybody the Spurs throw at him.

        SCOREBOARD

        Monday, June 12

San Antonio at Cleveland (9 p.m. EDT).

The Cavaliers, down two games to none to the Spurs, host their first-ever NBA Finals contest.

        STAR

        Sunday

-Tony Parker, Spurs, scored 30 points to lead San Antonio to a 103-92 win over Cleveland.

        LEARNING FROM HISTORY

San Antonio has a two games to none lead in the NBA Finals after its 103-92 win over Cleveland on Sunday night. In the 2005 finals, the Spurs won the first two games against Detroit but had to go seven to win the title. Last year, Miami lost Games 1 and 2 in Dallas before going home to Florida and winning three straight and then beating the Mavericks on their home floor for their first championship.

        THREE-HEADED MONSTER

Tony Parker scored 30 points, Manu Ginobili had 25 and Tim Duncan added 23 and San Antonio took a two games to none lead in the NBA Finals with a 103-92 win over Cleveland on Sunday night. The Spurs' Big 3 combined for 43 points - 10 more than the Cavs - in the first half.

        SITTING UNPRETTY

Cleveland's LeBron James played less than three minutes in the first quarter of Sunday night's game because of foul trouble. The Spurs built a 28-point lead in the first half en route to a 103-92 win over the Cavaliers and a two games to none lead in the NBA Finals. James finished with 25 points after being limited to 14 in his finals debut.

        BETTER NEWS

Denver guard J.R. Smith remained hospitalized Sunday after being thrown from his vehicle during a crash Saturday night, but his injuries aren't believed to be as serious as first thought. Smith and a passenger, Andre Bell, 21, of East Orange, were seriously injured Saturday when the sport utility vehicle Smith was driving went through a stop sign and overturned after colliding with a car at about 5:30 p.m. in Millstone Township, state police said.

        CHARGED

Denver reserve forward DerMarr Johnson was charged with resisting arrest and interfering with police during a disturbance outside a nightclub. Police said they used a taser to calm the 6-foot-9 player. Johnson and two women were arrested, booked and released early Saturday.

        SPEAKING

''Spurs by a bunch,'' - San Antonio p.a. announcer Stan Kelly announcing the halftime score to the AT&T Center crowd on Sunday night. The Spurs had a 58-33 lead through the first 24 minutes.

        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
        NBA Gameday
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

        NBA Finals Gameday

LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers fell behind early in Game 2 on Sunday, and couldn't make up enough ground in the second half to avoid a 2-0 deficit in the series.

But now the Cavs will at least get to play some home games as they look to get back into the best-of-seven NBA Finals. Cleveland will play host to San Antonio in Game 3 on Tuesday night and Game 4 on Thursday night, and if they manage to pull out a victory in either of those contests they'll also get home-court advantage for Game 5 on Sunday.

However, Cleveland's performance in the first half of Game 2 suggests that Game 5 might not be necessary. The Spurs outscored the Cavaliers 28-17 in the first quarter on Sunday, and 30-16 in the second quarter en route to a 58-33 advantage at the break.

San Antonio then eased up in the third quarter, outscoring Cleveland just 31-29, before the Cavaliers took over the game with a 30-14 advantage in the fourth quarter. That difference, though, wasn't enough to get Cleveland the win - in fact it wasn't even enough to allow them to cover the 7-point spread on the night. The final score of 103-92, though, was good news for OVER bettors - the total had been pegged at 176 points.

Tony Parker scored a game-high 30 points for San Antonio in Sunday night's home victory. Manu Ginobili picked up 25 points and went a perfect 11-for-11 from the free-throw line. Tim Duncan added 23 points to go along with nine rebounds and eight assists. No other Spurs player managed to get score double-digit points in the victory.

For the Cavaliers, James went just 9-of-21 from the field and picked up 25 points to go along with seven boards, six assists, and six turnovers. Daniel Gibson kicked in 15 points in the loss, while Drew Gooden scored 13 points, Sasha Pavlovic had 10 points, and Anderson Varejao grabbed 10 rebounds. Larry Hughes was pointless in 20 minutes.

King James' 25-point performance on Sunday night was a sizeable improvement on his 14-point effort from Game 1, but some quick fouls forced him to miss a large chunk of the first quarter. With the Cavs' top scorer off the floor the Spurs built up their big lead.

So James will need to avoid foul trouble in Game 3 on Tuesday night (tip-off is set for 9:00pm ET once again) if he wants Spurs fans to put the brooms away. When San Antonio played in Cleveland during the regular season James scored 19 points in the 82-78 victory, and the Duncan/Parker/Ginobili trio was held to just 50 combined points.

Of course, the Cavs did get 18 points from Hughes in that January 2 victory, and he's been a non-factor in the Finals because of his foot injury. Cleveland also got eight points and 13 rebounds from Zydrunas Ilgauskas in that win, and the Spurs have neutralized him over the first two games (11 points, 10 boards combined in the Finals).

The books opened San Antonio as a 1.5-point road favorite for Tuesday night's game, with the opening total set at 178.5 points. Here is the complete schedule for the rest of the Finals (all games 9:00pm ET). Games 5, 6, and 7 will only be played if necessary:

Game 3 - Tuesday, June 12 - San Antonio at Cleveland
Game 4 - Thursday, June 14 - San Antonio at Cleveland
Game 5 - Sunday, June 17 - San Antonio at Cleveland
Game 6 - Tuesday, June 19 - Cleveland at San Antonio
Game 7 - Thursday, June 21 - Cleveland at San Antonio

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lady luck: Tuesday’s best WNBA bets

Washington Mystics at New York Liberty (-3, 145 1/2)

New York started the season undefeated after five games but have since lost two consecutive games. Sunday’s loss against the Indiana Fever was particularly disheartening for New York backers as the Liberty were outplayed in almost every facet of the game.

Just five days removed from beating Indiana 78-67, New York shot 38 percent from the field and were outrebounded 42-23 en route to a 19-point loss.

Washington has the worst record in the league and the team is still searching for its first win. Tonight should be a good opportunity since the Mystics have had four days off since their last match.

              Pick: Mystics

              Seattle Storm at Chicago Sky (+2 1/2, 156 1/2)

For Seattle, the sun rises and sets with Lauren Jackson. The All-Star forward leads the league in scoring and she was at the top of her game during Saturday’s 90-76 win over the Minnesota Lynx.

“I didn’t know what to expect,” said Jackson, who had a game-high 30 points on 12-of-15 shooting. “As soon as the first shot went in, I was like, ‘What? OK, keep shooting cause it might just be one of those day.’ It felt good out there.”

Just one year removed from a league-worst 5-29 mark, the Sky are 4-4 after eight games. Second-year forward Candice Dupree has blossomed into one of the game’s best post players. As long as she stays out of foul trouble, Chicago has a chance to win most nights.

              Pick: Sky

                NBA Finals

When an overachieving team finally meets its maker, the end is often ugly; Cleveland lost first two games of this series by 9,11 points, and they're +22 in fourth quarter. You say Cavaliers had 2-0 deficit in last round and won; you're right, but they've made Parker look like Oscar Robertson so far in Finals (57 points in two games) while Hughes is combined 1-10 from floor. Lebron got two fouls in first half Sunday; team responded by sinking into a funk worse than Paris Hilton after she got sent to prison again, down 58-33 at half. Time for Cleveland to show they've got enough onions to make this a series. They'll take their best shot here; someone other than Lebron better make some.

-James Loney, Dodgers, doubled home the go-ahead run in the sixth inning of Los Angeles' 5-3 win over the New York Mets.

                  CHASING AARON

Barry Bonds hit his 747th career home run, moving within nine of passing Hank Aaron's record of 755 with a two-run shot in San Francisco's 4-3 win over Toronto on Monday. Bonds sent an 0-1 pitch an estimated 438 feet into the seats for his 13th homer of the year and first against Blue Jays right-hander Josh Towers, who became the 440th pitcher to allow a homer to Bonds. It was the first homer since May 27 for the Giants slugger.

                  LONGBALL PARTY

Ryan Howard, Pat Burrell and Jimmy Rollins each hit solo homers, accounting for all the offense in Philadelphia's 3-0 win over the Chicago White Sox on Monday.

                  DOUBLE TROUBLE

Raul Ibanez doubled his season home run total with a pair of two-run shots in Seattle's 8-7 win over Cleveland on Monday. He came into the game with two homers in his previous 209 at-bats this season.

                  SLUMPING

The New York Mets were defeated 5-3 by the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday and have now lost seven of their last eight games.

Casey Blake extended his hitting streak to a career-high 20 games in Cleveland's 8-7 loss to Seattle on Monday. ... The Mariners have won four straight and eight of their last nine.

                  SPEAKING

''I don't want people to find out how (bad) we are right now.'' - Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen, wondering why ESPN would televise his team's game on Monday. The White Sox were shutout for the fifth time this season, tied for most in the AL, losing 3-0 to Philadelphia.

                  SEASONS June 12

1959 - The San Francisco Giants' Mike McCormick tossed a 3-0, five-inning no-hitter against the Philadelphia Phillies. Richie Ashburn singled in the top of the sixth for the Phillies, but the hit didn't count because the game was stopped by rain.

1970 - Dock Ellis of the Pittsburgh Pirates hurled a 2-0 no-hitter in the first game of a doubleheader against the San Diego Padres. Ellis walked eight and hit a batter, and Willie Stargell hit two homers.

                    MLB
                    Dunkel Index

                    Oakland at Houston
The A's have won 10 of their last 13 thanks largely to a group of starting pitchers who have not allowed more than two earned runs in any of those 13 games -- the longest streak for Oakland since 1978 -- and are 7-2 with a 1.20 ERA over that period. Today Oakland will go with Joe Kennedy, who despite a 2-4 record has not allowed more than three runs in any of his 11 starts this season. The Astros will have their ace on the mound in Roy Oswalt, but Houston has lost the last five games that Oswalt has started. The right-hander has not been his usual untouchable self as he has allowed at least four runs in three of his last four outings while only receiving six runs of support in his previous four starts combined. The pitching rich A's look like a good underdog pick (+175) in this one according to Dunkel, which has Oakland favored straight up by 2. Dunkel Pick: Oakland (+175). Here are all of today's games.

Arizona Diamondbacks at New York Yankees (-175, 9)

Johnny Damon is flourishing in the role of the designated hitter for the New York Yankees he inherited nearly two weeks ago. Damon has been battling several nagging injuries and he was struggling at the plate. In his last seven games, Damon is batting .324 (11-34) with four multi-hit games during the stretch.

“We’re saving Johnny’s legs for things offensively, which is important for us,” manager Joe Torre told the New York Daily News. “He seems to have so much more life in his body. I think it helps that he doesn’t have to be out there running around the outfield.”

The Yankees are enjoying a six-game winning streak and Damon’s move is a large factor. Not only has New York's offense improved since Damon started hit, but Melky Cabrera is a defensive upgrade in center field.

With all that said, it’s hard to bet against Arizona as an underdog when Brandon Webb is on the mound. He’s allowed only two earned runs in his last 22 innings pitched and Arizona has won eight of his 10 starts his season.

                      Pick: Diamondbacks +167

Atlanta Braves at Minnesota Twins (-146, 9 ½)

Atlanta hopes to have third baseman Chipper Jones back for this series. The long-time Brave has played in only seven games since May 11th because of bruises on his hands.

“I’ll probably come in early tomorrow before we leave to go to Minnesota, take some more batting practice from both sides, see how it feels,” Jones told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Sunday. “Depending on that, I guess we’ll make a decision on Tuesday. If it feels good enough to go, I want to get back in there. If I’m still feeling pain, I’ll probably wait another couple of days.”

The news isn’t as good for starting catcher Brian McCann. Braves manager Bobby Cox has ruled him out for the series opener because of an ankle injury.

“I’m fine,” McCann told the Macon Telegraph. “My ankle’s fine. My finger’s fine. I’m fine. I’m not hurting. I feel good.”

                      But Cox isn’t buying it.

“That’s the way he is,” Cox said. “He played all last year with pain. He doesn’t complain. He’s a gamer.”

Whether Jones plays or not, the Braves should be able to handle the Twins today in the Metrodome.

                      Pick: Braves +138

Los Angeles Angels at Cincinnati Reds (+127, 9)

They say good things come to those who wait, and that’s been the case for Kelvim Escobar. The veteran pitcher has been notorious for getting little run support in his career with the Angels. The last three seasons the right-hander is 25-28 but with a creditable 3.68 ERA.

This year things have gone differently for the Venezuelan native. Escobar is 7-3 with 2.68 ERA and he’s been given an average of 4.81 runs from in teammates in his 11 starts.

“I’m having better results,” Escobar told the Los Angeles Times. “My record is definitely showing how well I’m pitching, and it’s making a big difference.”

                      Pick: Angels -135

                        Tuesday, June 12

                        Hot

Greg Maddux (San Diego Padres) - The four-time NL Cy Young Award winner has won four of his last five starts and can win three straight decisions for the first time since August of last season. Tonight Maddux will take on the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, a team he has owned in his career. The right-hander has not faced the D-Rays since 2001, but has shut them out twice and has a 0.67 ERA in three career starts. Maddux is 5-3 with a 3.82 ERA so far this season for the Padres.

Fausto Carmona (Cleveland Indians) - Carmona, a winner of seven straight decisions, will take the hill for the Indians tonight against the Florida Marlins. The right-hander has been one of baseball's hottest pitchers this season going 7-1 with a 3.11 ERA to date. He has given up three runs or less in nine of his 11 starts, and is 4-0 with a 2.88 ERA in six outings on the road. This will be his first career start against the struggling Marlins.

Brandon Webb (Arizona Diamondbacks) - Last season's NL Cy Young Award winner will try to cool off the streaking New York Yankees tonight and win his fourth straight decision. Webb is one of the best in baseball at keeping the ball out of the air and has the stats to back it up. He leads the major leagues with a 78.5 ground-ball percentage. The right-hander is 6-3 with a 3.13 ERA so far this season and will make his first career start at Yankee Stadium.

                        Cold

Bronson Arroyo (Cincinnati Reds) - Arroyo has lost three consecutive starts as the Reds have dropped to the bottom of the NL Central with the league's worst record. Bettors should be aware that the right-hander has allowed at least six earned runs in each of his last four outings. Arroyo is 2-7 with a 5.01 ERA on the season and is 1-2 with a 4.76 ERA in five career starts against the Los Angeles Angels.

Kevin Millwood (Texas Rangers) - Millwood will take the hill tonight for the Rangers as he looks to turn around the worst season of his career. The right-hander is coming off a horrible showing on Wednesday where he gave up seven runs and lasted only 3 2/3 innings in a 10-0 loss to Detroit. Millwood is 2-5 with a 7.57 ERA this year and is 4-4 in 10 career starts versus the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Jose Contreras (Chicago White Sox) - Contreras will be the starting pitcher tonight when the White Sox take on the -151 favored Phillies. The Cuban right-hander, who has never faced Philadelphia, has allowed 13 runs in 19 innings over his last three starts, going 0-2 and raising his ERA from 3.71. Contreras who is 4-6 with a 4.23 ERA this season pitched better against the Yankees on Thursday but the White Sox ended up losing 10-3.

San Antonio Spurs at Cleveland Cavaliers (+2, 178 ½)

Look at the past hard enough and you can justify backing any team in any game.

Game 3 of the 2007 NBA Finals, for example, has parallels to the 2006 Finals when a powerhouse team from Texas was up 2-0 against an overwhelmed Eastern Conference foe. A 2003 draft pick ascended from stardom to superstardom as the underdogs won four straight over the favorite to embarrass the NBA pundits who’d already handed out the crown after two games.

Can LeBron James and his Cavaliers take the place of last season’s Dwyane Wade and the Miami Heat? Can he send the Spurs back to Texas without a title like Wade did to the Dallas Mavericks last season? Why not? All it would take is a repeat of James’ performance against the Detroit Pistons in the Eastern Conference finals just passed.

Then there’s the fact that San Antonio has a history of Game 3 letdowns after building a 2-0 lead in a series. The Spurs are 2-8 SU and 1-9 ATS in such Game 3 scenarios from the 1999 Finals to the present day, 1-6 SU and 0-7 ATS over the past five seasons.

The most recent of those letdowns came against the Utah Jazz in the Western Conference finals, a comparable series to the current one. San Antonio jumped to big second-half leads in Games 1 and 2 with their visitors making the ATS result interesting in the second halves of those games. Utah then blew the Spurs away in Game 3, a 26-point embarrassment that turned out to be a case of poking the San Antonio bear.

The Spurs' dependence on the Big Three of Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili has become more pronounced than usual during the Finals. Each of the trio is shooting worse on the road than at home this postseason, a bad sign for the team's backers.

The Spurs aren’t likely to collapse like last year’s Mavs. Cleveland doesn’t have the supporting cast that Miami did last season and besides, the Spurs have been to the Finals before and won.

But the Spurs haven't swept many series in recent years and the Cavs’ best shot of making this a five-game Finals is tonight when the Q will be rocking.

                            Pick: Cavaliers +2
