    Six-pack for Monday

-- I'd like to be Ichiro Suzuki's agent this winter, when he is the prime free agent outfielder available.

-- Randy Johnson is 4-0, 1.53 in his last five starts.

-- Lenny Dinardo has come from nowhere to be 2-1, 2.08 as spot starter for A's; he has been scored upon in only one of 16 innings he began as a starter.

-- Red Sox are now 1-5 in Matsuzaka starts when they score less than seven runs.

-- Nine of thirty starting pitchers failed to finish five innings Sunday; Colorado's Hirsh threw only complete game, but in Cincinnati, Sabathia threw nine scoreless IP in extra inning game that Reds won 1-0 in 12.

-- Marco Scutaro broke up scoreless tie in 8th inning with another clutch home run; this guy does more to help team win than you could expect from a utility player.

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend............

      13) Brewers are really struggling, but still lead NL Central by 5.5 games, as rest of division is putrid, to be kind. I mean, the A's are 34-28 and are in third place. Milwaukee is 34-29.

      12) Tough night Sunday for Lou Piniella, who saw Ted Lilly get tossed after 10 pitches, after he hit Edgar Renteria in hand in what appeared to be an overreaction by the umpire. Then a superior effort by Cub bullpen was wasted when Braves won game with an 8th-inning rally. Frustrating season for Lou.

      11) One word for the NBA Finals so far: unwatchable. Rally by Cavaliers in fourth quarter helps Spurs more than it does Cavaliers since Popovich can throw that tape in the VCR and beat them up on how series isn't over. It creates false hope for Cleveland; they haven't been competitive yet.

      10) Cavaliers' coach Brown went to high school in Germany.

      9) Woody Austin started day four shots behind Adam Scott in Memphis, but Austin shot 62, making up 13 shots on Scott and winning third career PGA event. He shot -5 on back nine.

      8) Kenny Rogers threw 51 pitches in his first rehab start for Toledo Sunday, allowing no runs in 3.2 IP. Detroit still holds the Wild Card slot, but their pitching needs a boost.

      7) Fans are stupid, part I: David Ortiz leads AL first basemen by 424,337 in All-Star balloting, but he only plays first base in NL parks, when there is no DH. Maybe five times a year.

      6) Fans are stupid, part II: Matt Holliday is hitting .352, and is 13th in voting amongst NL outfielders.

      5) Guys you wouldn't expect who knocked in 5+ runs Sunday: Spilborghs, Harris, Grudzielanek.

      4) It is funny how UCLA whacks Cal-Fullerton in hoops, and Fullerton doesn't have a football team, but when it comes to baseball, the Titans are the bully on the block. Thats one of the coolest things about college sports, about how different schools hold the upper hand in different sports.

      3) Peter the Anteater is headed to Omaha, as Cal-Irvine goes to the College World Series this weekend. This is also 15th year in row at least one SEC team made the World Series.

      2) As an A's fan, if I see a pitcher they drafted playing in the NCAA tournament, I root for that team to lose, so a manager can't overuse the kid. I can remember Ben McDonald winning a game for LSU in CWS with complete game, then seeing him save a game the next freakin' day. Not good.

      1) American League finished weekend with 9-5 Sunday in the interleague games, making them 49-33 for season.

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sacramento Monarchs at Houston Comets (+5 ½, 145)

The books continue to give the Comets more respect than they deserve. Houston has yet to win a game and they are 1-5 against the spread this season. They’ve lost every game save one by double-digits but they've been a 10-point underdog just once.

Sacramento nearly overcame a 13-point third-quarter deficit against the league’s top-scoring team. The Phoenix Mercury held on to win 74-70, but the Monarchs believe they can easily fix what went wrong on Saturday.

“We weren’t ourselves tonight, defensively and energy-wise,” Monarchs coach Jenny Boucek told the Sacramento Bee. “We did rally back, but we’re a team that has to play hard for 40 minutes, and we didn’t.”

The Comets will still be searching for their first win and second cover of the season when this game is over.

                Pick: Monarchs

                  Seattle at Cleveland
The Indians have sputtered recently, alternating wins and losses in their last seven games, including an extra-inning setback (1-0) against the Reds yesterday in which the Tribe wasted a solid performance from ace C.C. Sabathia. Seattle has been on a roll, winning seven of its last eight and 14 of 19, including a three-game sweep at San Diego over the weekend. In a makeup from one of the snowed out games in April, the Mariners are the hotter team right now and look like a good underdog pick (+155) according to Dunkel, which has Seattle favored straight up by 1. Dunkel Pick: Seattle (+155). Here are all of today's games.

Moments later, Renteria retaliated. He smacked Cubs second baseman Mike Fontenot in the face with his right hand while stealing second. ''It hit me in the hand and the chin also. But I have a big chin. Strong. I understand the game. If he hit me on my buttocks, I understand, but to hit me in the head, I don't understand that.'' - Edgar Renteria, on being hit by Ted Lilly in the first inning of the Braves' 5-4 win over the Cubs on Sunday. Lilly was ejected and the benches and bullpens emptied as a result of the incident.

New York Mets at Los Angeles Dodgers (+107, 7 ½)

Shawn Green was set to return yesterday against the Detroit Tigers but Mets manager Willie Randolph held the right fielder out an addition day. Green suggested it probably had to do with lefty Andrew Miller throwing for Detroit, not a good matchup for the left handed hitter to make his return. Randolph told the New York Post he felt Green needed just a little bit more work in batting practice before playing.

The Mets will need a solid outing from Orlando Hernandez today to give the bullpen some rest. Starters Tom Glavine and Oliver Perez allowed 13 runs and pitched a combined 9 1/3 innings in New York’s last two games.

Dodgers manager Grady Little rested Nomar Garciaparra and Jeff Kent yesterday, so the two veterans should be ready to go for the start of this series.

Chicago White Sox at Philadelphia Phillies (-121, 9 ½)

How will Philly fans react to the return of Jim Thome? The White Sox DH hit 96 jacks in 361 games for Philadelphia before being traded back to the American League in 2006.

“I’m excited,” Thome told the Philadelphia Daily News. “When the schedule first comes out, one of the first things you look at is to see where you play in interleague. You always want to play when you come back to a city where you’ve been before, whether it’s Cleveland or Philadelphia.”

Playing in a National League park presents some difficulties for the White Sox. With no designated hitter, Thome with have to play first base, a position he has not played regularly in two years. Additionally, with Thome playing first, Paul Konerko will be on the bench.

The Phillies have their own problems. Now that starter Freddy Garcia has joined closer Brett Myers on the disabled list, Philadelphia is missing two of its best arms. The team has not decided on which minor league pitcher will replace Garica in the rotation.

                            Pick: White Sox +113

Toronto Blue Jays at San Francisco Giants (-144, 8 ½)

Funny thing happened to Rich Aurilia last night in a game against the Oakland Athletics. Aurilia elected not to steal second on a past ball because teammate Barry Bonds was at the plate and he didn’t want to give A’s pitcher Alan Embree a reason to walk Bonds with first base open.

After the game Embree told reporters he would not have walked Bonds had Aurilia stole second and can you blame him? Bonds hasn’t hit a home run since May 27 and he’s knocked in only seven runs since May 3rd.

The cold streak from the 42-year-old is killing the Giants offense. The team’s lost 12 of its last 16 games and has been shutout in three of the last five contests.

                            Pick: Blue Jays +136
