      Sunday Night Baseball

      Sunday, June 10

      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

      Sunday Night Baseball:
      Chicago Cubs at Atlanta Braves

      The line: -141, 8 runs

      Smoltz to miss Sunday's start

John Smoltz was the Braves' scheduled starter for Sunday's contest but the veteran right-hander was scratched because of inflammation in his right shoulder.

The Braves recalled pitcher Buddy Carlyle from Triple-A Richmond to fill Smoltz's spot.

Carlyle was sent back to the minors after facing Florida on Tuesday dispite holding the Marlins to just one hit over seven innings of action in a 3-1 victory.

Smoltz pitched through the injury in his last start, allowing just two runs and three hits in the second game of a doubleheader against the Florida Marlins on Tuesday. Atlanta lost the game 5-1.

Overall Smoltz is 7-3 with a 1.21 WHIP and a 2.83 ERA on the season.

      Not all roses for Lilly

Ted Lilly’s numbers don’t show just how well he has pitched this year overall, though his last few starts have been rough. The left-hander is 4-4 with a 3.99 ERA on the season, but has allowed just 67 hits and surrendered 16 walks in 76 2/3 innings.

The big problem recently has been the long ball. Lilly had allowed three home runs in each of his last two starts and has allowed 10 in his last nine starts overall. He is 0-2 with an 8.82 ERA in his last three starts after tossing a quality start in eight of his first nine.

Atlanta just not as Chipper without Jones

Chipper Jones has missed the Braves’ last 16 games. Not surprisingly, Atlanta is just 6-10 and down 6.27 units, or $627 per $100 bet, during that time and the offense is averaging just four runs per game.

The 35-year-old has been the heart and soul of the Braves for years, and still leads the team with 12 home runs despite his lengthy absence. Atlanta placed Jones on the 15-day DL retroactive to May 30, meaning he’s guaranteed to be out for at least another week.

“I don’t want to state the obvious, but we have to have Chipper in the lineup,” Smoltz told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “You can only make up [for his absence] for so long. We’ve got a lot of young guys doing a monumental task. And they’re doing a good job. But there’s something to be said for having to face Chipper Jones.”

      Cubs’ record doesn’t make sense

The Cubs have been a sabermatician’s worst nightmare. They are 27-32 on the season heading into Saturday’s action, but have actually scored 31 more runs than they have allowed.

Chicago’s 278-247 runs for/runs against ratio gives them a Pythagorean win/loss record of 33-26 – a record that would put them in first place in the NL Central.

Pythagorean win/loss was a formula developed by sabermatician Bill James that calculates a team’s record strictly by runs scored and allowed, effectively taking luck out of the equation. It is calculated by squaring a team’s runs scored and dividing that number by the sum of the square of a team’s runs scored and a team’s runs allowed: RS^2/(RS^2+RA^2).

Sluggers expected to miss time for Cubs

Outfielder Cliff Floyd was placed on the team’s bereavement list on Friday so he could spend time with his ailing father. Under the rules he must miss at last three games and no more than seven, meaning he will not play on Friday.

Floyd is hitting .306 with three home runs in 42 games for the Cubs this season.

Third baseman Aramis Ramirez’s status is a little more up in the air. He was diagnosed with patellar tendonitis after hurting his knee running out a ground ball on Wednesday. He missed the first two games of the series against the Braves and, if he does play this weekend, it will be in a pinch hitting role.

Ramirez is batting .299 with a team-leading 13 home runs and 39 RBIs.

            Streaking Pitchers

            Sunday, June 10

            Hot

Randy Johnson (Arizona Diamondbacks) - Johnson looks to turn in another strong outing today against the Boston Red Sox. Johnson missed the first three weeks of the season while recovering from back surgery, but he has been outstanding in his last four starts, going 3-0 with a 1.52 ERA. Johnson is 15-7 with a 4.57 ERA in 28 starts and one relief appearance against Boston during his Hall of Fame career.

C.C. Sabathia (Cleveland Indians) - Sabathia looks to become the majors' first 10-game winner when the Indians wrap up their interleague series with the Reds at Great American Ball Park this afternoon. The left-hander is 9-1 with a 3.40 ERA this season and the Indians are an impressive 12-1 in Sabathia's starts. The Reds have not done well against the Indians new ace, going 1-5 in Sabathia's six career starts against Cincinnati.

Jared Weaver (Los Angeles Angels) - Weaver is looking to win his fifth straight decision today. The right-hander allowed one run and five hits in seven innings on Monday against the Twins in a 16-3 victory. Run support has been key for Weaver as the Angels are giving him over 10 runs per game in his last five starts. The right-hander is 5-3 with a 3.88 ERA on the season.

            Cold

Jason Hirsh (Colorado Rockies) - Hirsh will try to end a personal five-game losing streak and record his first win since April 22 today against the Orioles. The right-hander is 0-5 in his last eight starts and if he would get some run support his luck is bound to change. The Rockies are only averaging 3.1 runs per game when Hirsh takes the mound.

Mark Buehrle (Chicago White Sox) - Maybe it is the pressure of trying to win his 100th career victory but Mark Buehrle has not looked good as of late. Buehrle is 0-3 with a 4.73 ERA in seven starts and is coming off his worst outing this year. The left-hander is 2-3 with a 3.99 ERA on the year and the White Sox have gone 7-4 in his starts.

David Bush (Milwaukee Brewers) - Things have been bad in Milwaukee for the last month and there is no sign of it getting better tonight in Texas. Bush has lost his last three decisions and has just one victory in his last eight starts with the Brewers. The right-hander is 3-6 with a 5.67 ERA this season.

Jorge De La Rosa (Kansas City Royals) - De La Rosa hopes to end his three-game losing streak when he takes the mound for Kansas City today versus the Phillies. There have been positive signs for De La Rose. In his last start he had one of his best outings of the season, allowing one run and five hits in 7 1-3 innings. The problem for bettors today is the left-hander has struggled at home lately, giving up 19 earned runs in 13 2-3 innings over three starts.

              Oakland at San Francisco
The Giants have probably had about enough of Oakland's pitching as they've dropped four of five against the A's this season while being outscored 31-12. Yesterday the A's used their new ace, Dan Haren, and two relievers to beat their old ace, Barry Zito, in a six-hit shutout. Today Oakland will go for the series sweep behind converted starter Lenny Dinardo, who picked up a win in his last start by allowing just two hits in six innings against the Bosox. San Francisco starter Matt Cain is 0-2 with a 4.26 ERA in his last four starts while the Giants are just 2-10 in games he has started this season. The A's look like a good underdog pick (+145) in this one according to Dunkel, which has Oakland favored straight up by 1. Dunkel Pick: Oakland (+145). Here are all of today's games.

                  Sunday, June 10

Toronto Blue Jays at Los Angeles Dodgers (-105, 7 ½)

The Los Angeles Dodgers need to sort out their offense as quickly as possible. Last Monday, they were top of the NL West but after a horrid week they now sit third in the division.

The Dodgers have lost four of their last five games and were swept by the San Diego Padres in the preceding series. They've been shut out in two of their last five games and have only scored only 11 runs while batting a mere .217 over that stretch.

Today they face Toronto’s ace Roy Halladay, who has struggled since returning from an appendectomy in May.

Halladay has allowed at least eight runs in three of his last four starts. He'll see this game as a perfect opportunity to bounce back; he is 9-3 with a 3.01 ERA in 14 games against the NL since the start of the 2003 season and was fantastic in his only career start against the Dodgers, pitching a four-hitter in a 2-1 victory in 2002.

                  Pick: Toronto –103

Oakland Athletics at San Francisco Giants (-129, 8)

Fresh from a series win against the Boston Red Sox, the Oakland Athletics are looking for their first sweep of the Giants in San Francisco today.

The A’s send Lenny DiNardo to the mound to secure the sweep after he earned his first win as a starter since May 7 last season on Tuesday. He allowed just two hits in a 2-0 victory over Boston in his second start of the year.

DiNardo has pitched 2 2-3 scoreless innings without receiving a decision in a pair of relief outings against the Giants, including two innings of work on May 20.

The Giants will counter with Matt Cain, who is 0-2 with a 4.26 ERA in four starts since his last win on May 13. San Francisco is just 2-10 in games he's started.

                  Pick: Oakland +121

Boston Red Sox at Arizona Diamondbacks (+102, 8)

It’s the old master versus the young pretender when Arizona's Randy Johnson faces Boston's Daisuke Matsuzaka tonight in Arizona.

After missing the opening part of the season Johnson has come roaring back in recent weeks and is 3-0 with a 1.52 ERA in his last four starts. The Big Unit missed winning his fourth consecutive start on Tuesday, failing to receive a decision against San Francisco after limiting them to two runs and seven hits in six innings.

Matsuzaka has been inconsistent in recent starts after making a lightening start to his Red Sox career. The Japanese star has lost his last two starts, although he was unlucky not to get the win on Tuesday against Oakland. The 26-year-old right-hander gave up two runs and seven hits in seven innings, but took the loss in a 2-0 defeat.

Johnson is 15-7 with a 4.57 ERA in 28 starts and one relief appearance against Boston, and the Diamondbacks have a great chance of avoiding the series sweep on the back of his start.

                  Pick: Arizona +102

                      Cleveland at San Antonio
The game plan for San Antonio this series is fairly simple: stop LeBron James and make the rest of the Cavaliers beat you. The Spurs executed that to perfection in Game One as they held James to just 14 points on 4-of-16 shooting from the field while forcing him into six turnovers. Meanwhile as a team, Cleveland shot just 42.9 percent from the field (30-of-70). While the Cavs were struggling on the offensive end, they had little answer for Tony Parker (27 points), Tim Duncan (24 points) and Manu Ginobili (16 points) on the defensive end. The Spurs have covered the Vegas line in both Game Twos at home this postseason (vs. Denver and Utah) and look like a good pick to do the same tonight (-7) according to Dunkel, which has San Antonio favored straight up by 12. Dunkel Pick: San Antonio (-7). Here are all of today's games.

Chicago White Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski was suspended for one game Saturday by Major League Baseball for his conduct during a game against the New York Yankees earlier this week. Pierzynski appealed the suspension and was in the lineup in Saturday's 3-2 loss to the Houston Astros, but said he might sit out Sunday in the finale of the interleague series.

                        SPEAKING

''Whoever else is on the staff or not, Danny's been unbelievable. No doubt he's the ace of our staff right now. He certainly deserves to be in conversations with the best pitchers in the game.'' - Oakland assistant general manager David Forst on Dan Haren (7-2), who won his seventh straight decision in a 6-0 win over the Giants on Saturday.
