    Six-pack for Saturday

Wrapping up A's-Giants game from Friday night........

-- Giants had bases loaded, one out in bottom of 9th after Ortmeier's triple and two walks, but didn't score, so game went into extra innings, where things got even stranger.

-- Both Giant catchers got hurt; Feliz caught 10th inning, as pitcher Noah Lowry played rightfield and made last out of game. Stewart got pinch-hit single to left to score winning runs, after he broke up no-hitter in 9th the day before.

-- A's 1B Johnson is worst baserunner I've ever seen; he is on third, 3-3 game, top of 8th. Wild pitch rolls to the screen, he doesn't even try to score. Zero instincts.

-- Two years ago in Chicago, he was on second, and got thrown out at the plate on a double off the wall. Seriously.

-- A's led 3-1 in 7th; they put lefty Marshall to pitch to the lefties Klesko, Bonds, both of whom smashed line drives to tie the game, 3-3, setting up bizarre ending. They pitched to Bonds with first base open in big spot. Not very smart.

-- Home plate ump Dreckman called 146 balls, 206 strikes, as he worked with round plate (no corners). A's won again in a Gaudin start; he has been a savior this season.

          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pittsburgh Pirates at New York Yankees (1:05 PM ET)

Maholm is a dismal 0-4 with a 5.57 ERA in seven career starts in June. EDGE: YANKEES
MLB experts expect Yankees starter Roger Clemens to struggle in his first start of the year, after missing his last minor league tuneup with leg problems. EDGE: PIRATES
Clemens is an impressive 5-1 with a 2.92 ERA in eight career starts against Pittsburgh. EDGE: YANKEES
The OVER is 7-1 in Maholm's last eight starts overall.

Perez allowing opposing batters to hit just .196 against him this season, including .191 against right-handed batters. This should prove important against a Tigers lineup with powerful right-handed hitters. EDGE: METS

Cincinnati starter Matt Belisle picked up a victory over Sowers on May 19, despite allowing a season-high 10 hits. He's allowed 14 hits and seven runs in 7 2/3 career innings against the Tribe. EDGE: OVER

Pro Basketball (women) – Hot Lines

            WNBA
            Hot Lines

            Saturday, June 9

            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lady luck: Saturday’s best WNBA bets

Chicago Sky at San Antonio Silver Stars (-7, 150 1/2)

The 3-4 Sky are already within two games of matching their win total from last year and have won three of their last five games, going 4-1 against the spread.

Chicago has now matched its road win total of two from last year. Thursday night’s 80-66 road loss to Phoenix as a 7-point underdog notwithstanding, the Sky finally appear to be getting their feet under them and last season’s poor play should still keep them undervalued for some time.

The Silver Stars are 4-3 on the season, but their opponents are actually shooting at a higher percentage from the floor (43.9-42.0) than they are.

            Pick: Sky

Phoenix Mercury at Sacramento Monarchs (-5 1/2, 158)

It’s been an up-and-down start to the season for the Mercury. They opened the season by winning four of their first five games, going 3-2 against the spread, but are just 1-3 straight up and against the spread in their last four.

The Monarchs have already lost to Phoenix this year, falling 76-75 as a 2-point road underdog on May 29. It’s just one of two losses they have all season – both on the road. They are 3-0 straight up and 2-1 against the spread at home this season.

            Pick: Monarchs

Minnesota Lynx at Seattle Storm (Odds TBA)

Expect the Lynx to be tired following Friday night’s game in Los Angeles. Minnesota is now just 1-7 straight up and 2-6 against the spread this season heading into that game.

The Storm are slightly more rested, having last played in Thursday’s 81-72 loss to Sacramento as a 8 ½-point underdog, but they are almost as bad overall. Seattle is just 2-3 both straight up and against the spread this season, but both its wins have come at home, where the Storm are 2-1 straight up and against the spread.

One thing that could hurt Seattle is the status of leading scorer Lauren Jackson, who is listed as questionable with an illness after missing Thursday’s game. Still, this is a bad Minnesota team.

            Pick: Storm

1986 - Chicago pitcher Tom Seaver (306) and California Angels hurler Don Sutton (298) had the highest combined win total of opponents since 1926, when Walter Johnson (406) faced Red Faber (197). Sutton beat the White Sox 3-0.

1990 - Eddie Murray of the Los Angeles Dodgers tied Mickey Mantle's record by homering from each side of the plate in the same game for the 10th time in his career. The Dodgers beat the Padres 5-4 in 11 innings.

1998 - Cecil Fielder of the Angels and Yamil Benitez of the Diamondbacks each hit grand slams in the same inning in Anaheim's 10-8 win over Arizona. It was the first time both teams hit grand slams in the same inning since 1992.

              Today's birthday: Randy Winn 33.

                Streaking Pitchers

                Saturday, June 9

                HOT

Dan Haren (Oakland Athletics) - The right-hander has pitched at least seven innings in his last four outings and the Athletics ended up winning all of those contests. He has allowed fewer than three runs in nine of his last 10 starts and under bettors have cashed in seven times in that span. Oakland is listed as -107 favorites against their Bay City rivals from San Francisco.

Jeremy Bonderman (Detroit Tigers) - After starting the season with five straight no-decisions the righty is getting great results. The Tigers were 1-4 after Bonderman's first five April starts and the over/under was 1-3-1. Since then he has won his last five outings and over bettors took the money each time. He has allowed no more than five runs in those appearances and he has received at least eight runs a game of support. The Tigers host the Mets as -144 favorites and the total is set at 9 runs.

Ben Sheets (Milwaukee Brewers) - Sheets has definitely cleaned up his early season struggles to give backers a fresh perspective of him. Milwaukee is 6-1 the last seven times their ace has taken the mound and he has given up fewer than four runs each time. The Brew Crew will battle the Rangers in Arlington as -150 favorites.

                COLD

Jeff Weaver (Seattle Mariners) - Weaver's return to the AL West certainly hasn't worked out well. Getting hurt is never a good thing, but when you lose your first six starts prior to going on the DL like Weaver did, things can't get much worse. He'll make his first outing in over a month after missing time with shoulder tendinitis. In six outings in a Mariners uniform he has an ERA above 14.00. Seattle is listed as +146 underdogs in pitcher-friendly Petco Park tonight.

Gil Meche (Kansas City Royals) - When the Royals signed Meche to a whopping five-year $55 million deal in the offseason many people wondered why the small market team would spend so much on him. Backers are still shaking their heads at the lowly Royals' righty who is winless in his last four outings. Kansas City is a +102 home dog to Philadelphia.

Jason Jennings (Houston Astros) - Jennings' first year in the state of Texas has been filled with pain and defeats. An elbow injury has limited him to make just four starts and the Astros have fallen short in all of those outings. Houson is at +112 in Chicago's south side.

                  Chicago Cubs at Atlanta
The only non-interleague game features the Cubs at Atlanta where the Braves are in the midst of an offensive slump. The Braves have dropped six of their last seven, including four straight in which they have scored a combined seven runs. Atlanta will likely need a strong performance out of starter Tim Hudson, but Hudson has struggled in recent starts, going 1-3 with a 6.66 ERA in his last four appearances. Meanwhile the Cubs are 4-1 on their current road trip with Alfonso Soriano hitting .565 (13-for-23) with four homers (three yesterday) during that span. Chicago looks like a good underdog pick (+155) according to Dunkel, which has the Cubs favored straight up by 2. Dunkel Pick: Chicago Cubs (+155). Here are all of today's games.

                    Saturday, June 9

Tampa Bay Devil Rays at Florida Marlins (-121, 8)

The D-Rays might be sending the hotter pitcher to the mound tonight in Miami, but my goodness their bullpen is in shambles.

Tampa Bay batters shelled Byung-Hyun Kim last night but could only watch as their bullpen coughed up hit after hit and walk after walk in a 14-8 Marlins win with Florida as a -123 favorite. The Devil Rays’ most effective reliever was Josh Wilson, a reserve infielder.

James Shields takes to the hill for Tampa Bay tonight and while he’s outpitching Dontrelle Willis so far this season, the D-Train has essentially matched Shields’ production over each of their last five starts. Once the managers go to the pen, the edge is all Florida’s.

The Marlins also have some hot bats in the meat of the order. Their Nos. 2 through 5 hitters are hitting .323 and slugging .556 over the past week and with No. 6 Jeremy Hermida slugging a grand slam last night, there are even fewer holes in the Florida lineup than normal.

                    Pick: Marlins -121

Los Angeles Angels at St. Louis Cardinals (-109, 9)

It’s already been said many a time this season, but it bears repeating until proven wrong: Ervin Santana is a great play at home but a disaster on the road. Santana shows off his Cy Young potential in L.A. but his 0-5 record, 9.30 ERA and 2.07 WHIP on the road are anything but award-worthy.

He’s up against Braden Looper tonight, the former reliever who’s shown near-dominant stuff at Busch Stadium in his first year as a full-time starter. Looper’s 3-1 at home with a 2.32 ERA and St. Louis has won four of his five home starts, profiting 2.92 units in the meantime.

The Angels have an impressive overall record this year, but they’re only 15-14 away from home. Considering Santana’s shoddy road numbers and the fact that Los Angeles used its key relievers to preserve last night’s win, the defending World Series champs have considerable value as a slight favorite on Saturday.

                    Pick: Cardinals -109

Milwaukee Brewers at Texas Rangers (+142, 9 ½)

The Rangers are a risky home underdog considering their MLB-worst 22-39 record this season. They went 2-1 in their first interleague series this year, however, and face a slumping Brewers team in their second.

Milwaukee leads the NL Central but has lost 18 of its last 27 games, including last night’s series opener in Arlington. The Brewers are struggling to explain the slump, which might be the most worrying aspect of it all.

"We all want to win every night,” Craig Counsell told the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel after Friday’s loss as a -114 favorite. “You can't press a magic button and say you're going to win."

Brandon McCarthy returns to the mound for Texas after missing a start with a torn callous on the middle finger of his pitching hand. His season stats pale in comparison to those of Milwaukee starter Ben Sheets, but McCarthy had a nifty 2.31 ERA in the four starts preceding his last one and Rangers backers became 3.61 units richer over that run.

                    Pick: Rangers +142

                        dakota,

We don't know, yet, if that guy is going to write the umps up today. We never have been able to figure out why he doesn't do that on so many days.

I don't count on him to do it. I use the matchups links available at the top of the page. You'll find anything you need to know right there. After you click MLB, there's a direct link, to umps info, right under the banner.

That's a great source that I use everyday. I use these trends to spot the good games for 'capping, then I head into that matchups area. That's where the details are.

Our guy has been coming out very late all week so, it'll be a while before we get to see if he's going to do it today.
