    Six-pack for Friday

-- Saito's hamstring injury hurt Dodgers last night, as they blew 5-1 lead at Petco in 9th inning, losing to Padres, 6-5.

-- Phillies' maligned bullpen threw 10 scoreless innings in a sweep at Shea Stadium, first time Mets have been swept at home since September of '05.

-- Mets lost Thursday, despite hitting back-to-back-to-back homers for first time in eighteen years.

-- Not only is Magglio Ordonez hitting .368, he even stole his first base of season Thursday.

-- Arizona is 17-7 in one-run games this season; they were 22-26 in one-run games all of last season.

-- In 1988, 49% of the 349 players who went on DL pitched; last year, 69% of the 347 disabled players were pitchers.

Friday's list of 13: Nobody asked me, but..........

      13) Do young pitchers get hurt more now than in old days, and if so, why? There is a theory afoot that young guys are not pitching enough innings in minor leagues, to create the foundation for their big league careers.

      12) For instance, Glavine pitched 536 innings in minors, Greg Maddux pitched 491 innings, Schilling 701, Randy Johnson 418, plus his time at USC. These guys have all had excellent careers, built upon a foundation of minor league experience.

      11) Scott Kazmir tossed 228 innings in minors, CC Sabathia 232, Dontrelle Willis 315, Mark Mulder 137, Cole Hamels 201. Kids are getting rushed thru minors, although some have lot of experience from their college days. All in all, though, the minor leagues aren't classroom for learning they used to be.

      10) If you take all the players drafted in first three rounds in years 1993-2000, only 22% of them made major leagues with the team that originally drafted them.

      9) Since 1996, of the sixty players the Reds drafted in Rounds 1-5, only six of them played for Cincinnati, the worst, by far, of any team. Detroit's 39.7% (23-58) is best percentage.

      8) My favorite two players to watch on Extra Innings package that aren't either on the A's or my fantasy team, are Arizona's Eric Byrnes and Giants' Omar Vizquel, an amazing fielder.

      7) Cubs have played ten home series this year, and won only two of them, with one split. They play better on the road.

      6) Brewers' hot start has them averaging 31,628 fans per home game at Miller Park. Question is, can they hang on to make it to the playoffs in a weak division?

      5) One factor that is going to help Bronx Bombers' attempt to make playoffs is fact that American League isn't as good this season. Tigers are missing pitching ace Rogers, Cleveland is missing Westbrook, A's are missing Harden, Loaiza, Street and Minnesota doesn't have Liriano this season. Thats a lot of pitching power sitting on the sidelines in the AL.

      4) Barry Bonds has never played against the Indians, and has yet to homer vs Devil Rays, Red Sox. Giants are going to be in Boston soon, but Bonds will likely be retired before Giants play the Devil Rays again (2010, at the earliest).

      3) There are fourteen interleague matchups this weekend, lot of which are teams that rarely play each other, but ESPN will show Cubs-Braves Sunday, when they have Braves again in two weeks. What genius is making these decisions?

      2) Vanderbilt won their first-ever national championship this year: women's bowling. They were top-ranked baseball team, but got knocked off by Michigan in NCAAs. Commodores have 17 starters back on their football team this fall., but are still favored to finish last in a brutal six-team SEC East.

      1) Much is being made of Kevin Durant not being able to do a 185-pound bench press at his workout. The kid played one year in college, but oh, what a year. If someone passes on the kid because he isn't physically strong, they are stupid- he is a player!!! I can see taking Oden ahead of him, but no one else.

                Friday, June 8

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lady luck: Friday’s best WNBA bets

Indiana Fever at Washington Mystics (+4, 146 ½)

The Fever bounced back nicely from their first loss of the season with an 84-59 win over the Comets on Wednesday night. Tonight’s game will be the club’s third in four days but fatigue shouldn’t stop Indiana from covering four points on the road.

The Mystics are searching for an identity after the resignation of coach Richie Adubato last Friday. New coach Tree Rollins has been able to stop the bleeding in his first two kicks at the can.

Washington almost beat the Fever on Sunday, so Indiana won’t take the winless team for granted.

                Pick: Fever –4

Detroit Shock at New York Liberty (+3 ½, 148 ½)

The Liberty have turned some heads en route to their 5-0 start. Even more impressive, they’ve covered in each game as well. New York's largest strength is its scoring depth.

“When every night someone else is stepping up, it’s hard to defend that,” Liberty forward Cathrine Kraayeveld told the New York Daily News. “We have six, seven or eight players that can step up and score.”

New York is the real deal, lady ball fans. Their last two wins have come against quality teams (Indiana and the Phoenix Mercury) and they seem to be getting better with each game.

                Pick: Liberty +3 ½

Connecticut Sun at Houston Comets (+5, 156 ½)

We started fading the Comets in the preseason and we will continue with our stance. Whether Houston management wants to admit it or not, this team is clearly too old and slow to compete. They need to rip the team up and start over.

Sheryl Swoopes will not be the only Comet geezer to be sidelined with injuries. Tina Thompson will soon feel the burden as the team's only consistent scoring threat.

The Sun will stretch their win streak to three games with a victory tonight in Texas.

                Pick: Sun –5

                  Baseball Today - June 8

                  SCOREBOARD

                  Friday, June 8

Houston at Chicago White Sox (8:11 p.m. EDT). The Astros and White Sox meet in a rematch of the 2005 World Series.

                  STARS Thursday

-Curt Schilling, Red Sox, pitched a one-hitter to lead Boston to a 1-0 win over Oakland.

-Jason Bay, Pirates, homered in the ninth inning to lift Pittsburgh over Washington 3-2.

-Troy Tulowitzki, Rockies, singled home the winning run to cap a three-run rally in the ninth inning that led Colorado over Houston 7-6.

-Rich Hill, Cubs, struck out 11, giving up three hits over eight innings to lead Chicago to a 2-1 win over Atlanta.

-Delmon Young, Devil Rays, hit a tiebreaking, two-run single in the ninth inning, and Tampa Bay defeated Toronto 5-3.

-Kyle Lohse, Reds, allowed one run over eight innings in a 5-1 victory over St. Louis.

-Curtis Granderson, Tigers, had two triples and three RBIs to lift Detroit past Texas 11-4.

                  NEAR MISS

Curt Schilling came within one out of his first career no-hitter Thursday, losing his bid when Shannon Stewart lined a clean single to right field in Boston's 1-0 victory over the Oakland Athletics on Thursday night. Schilling (6-2) retired Mark Ellis on a foul popout to end the third one-hitter of his career. The 40-year-old would have been the fourth-oldest pitcher to pitch a no-hitter. Nolan Ryan did it as a 43- and 44-year old, Cy Young was 41 when he pitched a no-hitter for the Red Sox in 1908; and Randy Johnson was 40 years, 8 months when he pitched a perfect game in 2004.

                  MILESTONE

Joe Torre got his 2,000th managerial victory as the Yankees defeated the White Sox 10-3 on Thursday night. Torre became the 10th manager in major league history to get 2,000 victories and is nine shy of tying Leo Durocher for ninth place.

                  RESURRECTION

Russell Branyan drew a bases-loaded walk with one out in the ninth to complete a five-run rally as the San Diego Padres stunned the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-5 Thursday night to complete a three-game sweep. The Padres trailed 4-1 and had only four hits going into the ninth. They got five hits and five runs off Jonathan Broxton (2-2) before making their first out of the inning.

                  STREAKS

Fausto Carmona won his seventh consecutive decision, leading the Cleveland Indians over the Kansas City Royals 8-3 Thursday. Carmona (7-1) has a 2.77 ERA in nine starts since April 13, when he made his first start of the season and was beaten 6-4 by Chicago.

                  ELUSIVE VICTORY

Edwin Jackson remained winless in 11 starts for Tampa Bay this season, allowing three runs and four hits over six innings in a 5-3 victory over Toronto on Thursday. Jackson (0-7), who lowered his ERA to 7.39, has the lowest run support among Devil Rays starters.

                  SPEAKING

''We get two outs, and I was sure, and I had a plan, and I shook Tek off. And I get a big what if for the rest of my life.'' - Curt Schilling, who came within one out of his first career no-hitter Thursday, losing his bid when Shannon Stewart lined a clean single to right field in Boston's 1-0 victory over the Oakland Athletics. Schilling said he shook off catcher Jason Varitek on that pitch, going with a fastball instead of a slider.

                  SEASONS June 8

1940 - Harry Craft of Cincinnati connected for a home run, a triple, a double and two singles in seven at-bats to lead a 27-hit attack as the Reds pounded the Dodgers 23-2 at Brooklyn.

1950 - The Boston Red Sox beat the St. Louis Browns 29-4 at Fenway Park and set major league records for runs scored; most long hits, 17 (nine doubles, one triple and seven homers); most total bases, 60; most extra bases on long hits, 32; most runs over two games, 49; most hits in two games, 51, including 28 this game.

1968 - Howie Bedell's sacrifice fly in the fifth inning ended Don Drysdale's record streak of 58 2-3 consecutive scoreless innings. The Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Philadelphia Phillies 5-3.

1969 - The New York Yankees' No. 7 was retired on Mickey Mantle Day. A crowd of 60,096 came to Yankee Stadium to honor Mantle and watched the Yankees sweep the Chicago White Sox 3-1 and 11-2.

1996 - Warren Morris hit a two-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning to give Louisiana State a 9-8 victory over Miami in the championship game of the College World Series.

2001 - Damion Easley became the ninth Detroit player to hit for the cycle as the Tigers beat Milwaukee 9-4. Easley hit an RBI double in the third inning, a three-run homer in Detroit's six-run fifth, a single in the sixth and a triple in the eighth.

2005 - Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez became the youngest member of the 400-homer club when he hit a solo shot in the eighth inning of New York's 12-3 win over Milwaukee.

Today's birthdays: Pete Orr, 28; Kenji Johjima, 31.

                    Friday, June 8

                    HOT

Chad Gaudin (Oakland Athletics) - Betting on the Louisiana native has been as good as New Orleans cooking lately. The Athletics have gone 6-0 in his last six appearances and he is no stranger to the Giants which is a team he faces tonight as a +120 underdog. He beat the Giants during the first round of interleague play in May.

Justin Germano (San Diego Padres) - The righty lost his first start of the year one month ago today, but he hasn't looked back since. The Padres have won the last four times he has taken the hill and he has allowed six runs total in the process. San Diego hosts Seattle as -144 favorites.

Jeff Francis (Colorado Rockies) - The lefty heads on the road riding a personal three-game winning streak. Under bettors have been especially happy with the Rockies starter. He has allowed only three runs during his current hot streak and the over/under is 0-6 the six times he has taken the mound.

                    COLD

Kip Wells (St. Louis Cardinals) - You've probably heard of the comedy by William Shakespeare called "All's Well That Ends Well". Well backers have had little reason to laugh when Kip Wells takes the rubber this year. The right-hander has started 12 times for the defending champs and the Cards are 2-10 in those contests. The Cards are 2-0 when he allows two runs or less, but are 0-10 in games he gives up at least three runs. St. Louis hosts the Angels as +119 dogs tonight.

Chris Capuano (Milwaukee Brewers) - Last year Capuano made his first All-Star appearance on a Brewers team that finished in the midde of the pack in the over-populated NL Central Division. This year the Brewers are finally contending, but you can't bank on the Brewers when Capuano starts. Milwaukee has lost each of his last five outings and they have managed more than one run of support for the lefty just once in that span. Books aren't looking at his past disapointments and have listed him as a -132 favorite against the Rangers.

                      Seattle at San Diego
The Padres try to extend their season-high five-game winning streak tonight, but could face a stiff challenge from the Mariners. Despite blowing a four-run lead against the Orioles on Wednesday, Seattle completed a successful 5-2 homestand while averaging 7.1 runs against Baltimore and Texas. Mariners' starter Miguel Batista has won three straight and has given up only eight runs in his last four starts spanning 24 1/3 innings. He gave up only one earned run in 6 2/3 inning when he faced the Padres on May 18. Seattle has won six of the last nine meetings between these two teams and looks like a good underdog pick (+150) in this one according to Dunkel, which has the Mariners favored straight up by 1/2 a run. Dunkel Pick: Seattle (+150). Here are all of today's games.

                        Friday, June 8

Chicago Cubs at Atlanta Braves (+108, 9 ½)

The Braves’ bats are struggling and it cost them the series opener yesterday. Chuck James pitched seven strong but his teammates couldn’t touch Rich Hill and the Cubs won as -111 road favorites.

Atlanta won’t get a similarly strong outing from Lance Cormier, today’s starter. Cormier made his first start of 2007 against the Cubs last Sunday and got rocked, allowing eight runs in only four innings, with three gopher balls along the way.

Chicago counters with Sean Marshall, a lanky lefty whose 1-2 record doesn’t reveal how he’s been nearly unhittable in his three starts this season. Marshall brings a 2.25 ERA and a 1.05 WHIP to Turner Field on Friday and he K’d eight Braves when he faced them in last Sunday’s 10-1 demolition at Wrigley as -147 favorites.

Atlanta has a winner’s reputation and the Cubs have had a couple of ugly incidents over the past week, but the Braves have scored only 13 runs over their last five while the Cubs are trotting out a better pitcher than their competition.

                        Pick: Cubs -116

Los Angeles Angels at St. Louis Cardinals (+119, 9 ½)

Angels starter Bartolo Colon looked iffy over his last couple of starts, getting touched-up so badly in the last part of May that his ERA is suddenly as fat as the man himself. Blame triceps tendinitis. Angels manager Mike Scioscia does, and now the skipper says Colon is good to go after sitting since May 28.

If that’s the case, this might be the most value MLB bettors will get in an Angels line for some time to come. The Cardinals have won six of their last eight games, but Kip Wells (he of the 2-10 record and 6.40 ERA) is going tonight.

Colon, the 2005 AL Cy Young award winner, missed the start of the season with similar problems. He made a late debut April 21 with a rested arm and pitched a seven-inning gem. Colon was 5-0 with a 3.69 ERA before his most recent pair of stinkers. Also consider the Angels are hitting .314 and averaging 6.7 runs per game in June.

                        Pick: Angels -127

Boston Red Sox at Arizona Diamondbacks (+145, 8 ½)

The Diamondbacks were MLB’s hottest team before last night’s extra-innings loss and they have their starting rotation to thank for the ascent up the NL standings.

Doug Davis gets the nod for Arizona tonight and brings some lofty numbers to the mound, especially for an underdog side. The lefty has allowed only four total runs over his last three starts, going at least seven innings in each of those. Davis is avoiding the long ball, conceding only four dingers all season.

That’s not great news for a BoSox squad already struggling at the plate. Boston managed only three runs and three extra-base hits over their final three games against the Oakland A’s this week. Curt Schilling's near no-no won the headlines yesterday, distracting bettors from another anemic attack from the Sox.

Josh Beckett starts for Boston, a big reason why the visitors are favored but he’s had relatively poor starts in two of his last three outings. Beckett came out early with blister problems May 13 and missed a couple of turns in the rotation. He also had his second tough outing of the season against the New York Yankees last Sunday, allowing 11 baserunners as the Sox lost a Beckett start for the first time this season.

                        Pick: Diamondbacks +145
