    Six-pack for Tuesday

-- Barry Zito has been awesome in three starts since the A's lit him up; he gets another shot at them this weekend.

-- Angels sent Saunders back to minor leagues after his win vs Orioles Saturday; with so many teams starved for guys who can pitch, the Angels sending Saunders down shows what a wealth of pitching talent they have.

-- Eric Chavez struck out with bases loaded, no one out in bottom of 9th, as A's blew chance after chance to beat the Red Sox, but he homered in 11th inning to win game, 5-4.

-- James Shields won again; in 12 starts for the woeful Rays Tampa has yet to trail when he left the game.

-- Felix Hernandez needed 106 pitches to get 17 outs in his start Monday; he has struggled since coming off the DL.

-- Twins scored 3-0-2-3 runs on first four games of road trip; they got wamboozled 16-3 in Anaheim Monday night.

Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but..........

      13) Very tough scoring call by home team scorer cost A's 2B Mark Ellis the cycle Monday night. Ellis had a triple, double and HR, when he hit hard grounder down third base line that Youkilis dove to stop, then threw wide to second, trying for the force there. Scorer called it fielder's choice, E5, when just as easily, he could have given Ellis the 8th-inning single.

      12) Ellis got his cycle in 10th inning, by the way, blooping a broken bat single into centerfield.

      11) Check out ESPN Tuesday morning for replay of great play by A's CF Mark Kotsay, running down double by David Ortiz off centerfield wall, then getting ball back in to Bobby Crosby very quickly so he could throw Pedroia out at plate by 30 feet with what would have been go-ahead run in top of the 10th, after A's bullpen kicked away a 4-2 lead in ninth inning.

      10) Added bonus of play is Jason Kendall tagging Pedroia in the face, and not gently. Kendall may hit .190, but he's tough and old-school, a solid backstop. He actually hit two fly balls in this game where outfielders had to go back, which is news.

      9) Quote of the Day: "A man ain't whipped until he quits." Thomas E. Gaddis, 1962, from Birdman of Alcatraz

      8) With the US Open just two weeks away and Tour heading to Memphis this week, #125 on PGA's money list is Mathias Gronberg, with $284,042. Two more guys passed $1M mark in 2007 earnings last week, bringing this year's total to 42.

      7) NHL can't be thrilled that Anaheim heads home with a 3-1 lead, and chance to win Stanley Cup in five games. League needs a dramatic, long series to gain exposure.

      6) Weird situation in Orlando, where the Magic have been embarrassed by Billy Donovan's flip-flop; they apparently did pretty well selling new season tickets since Donovan signed his contract; they would have to offer refunds to people who bought season tickets since Friday, no?

      5) On other hand, no way do they want a guy who isn't in it with both feet, especially someone who has never coached in the NBA. Hell, he hardly played in the NBA. Hopefuly, they'll work things out, and Donovan will be in Gainesville soon.

      4) Big winner here: Stan Van Gundy, who has emerged as a highly-sought after candidate, by both Kings and Magic. In light of his getting hosed in Miami, good for Van Gundy. The Magic-Heat rivalry might perk up some with Stan in Orlando.

      3) As for Donovan, must be nice to be so torn having to pick between a $3.5M a year deal and a $5.5M a year deal.

      2) Someone broke into Michael Vick's home last month, and stole three plasma TVs and two floor buffers, which raises a pair of questions which are none of my business:

-- Why would anyone steal not one, but two floor buffers?
-- How on God's green earth can a guy with 65 pit bulls, who are trained to fight, not keep one in the house as a watchdog?

      1) While Lou Piniella's accountant must be very happy with his Cubs' contract, Piniella might want to look elsewhere for someone to advise him on selecting jobs. Someone with the volcanic temper Piniella has isn't smart to manage the Devil Rays or Cubs, last two bumbling organizations he worked for.

Lady luck: Tuesday’s best WNBA bets

New York Liberty at Indiana Fever (-3, 145)

New York has been the top early-season bet. The Liberty have won and covered all four games, their best start since 1997.

“I know people outside this organization don’t expect a lot of us, but we have a lot of confidence in each other,” Liberty guard Erin Thorn told the New York Daily News.

New York has relied on players who haven’t made a name for themselves to lead the team. The Liberty have had three different leading scorers and players such as Thorn, Cathrine Kraayeveld and Loree Moore are all playing well above their career numbers.

Indiana will put an end to the Liberty’s win streak. The Fever will be motivated after an unimpressive 70-66 win over the Washington Mystics. Indiana turned the ball over 29 times and didn’t score a field goal until mid-way through the second quarter.

“We can’t play like that and be a championship-caliber team,” Fever coach Brian Winters told the Indianapolis Star. “And I told them that point-blank. It has to stop tonight. We can’t have it again.”

          Pick: Fever

San Antonio Silver Stars at Sacramento Monarchs (-5 1/2, 145 1/2)

The Monarchs are a team known for defense and depth but the team will have to alter its rotation with news that a key contributor could be done for the season. Forward DeMya Walker twisted her right knee during Saturday’s 88-85 win over the Los Angeles Sparks.

“The medical staff seems to think it’s a tear, but it’s a matter of what’s torn,” Monarchs general manger John Whisenant told the Sacramento Bee. “Either way, it will likely require surgery.”

Walker was averaging 8.8 points and five rebounds a game this season.

San Antonio continues to get great guard play. Shanna Crossley made four-of-five 3-pointers against the Seattle Storm helping her team win despite a poor game from Becky Hammon.

          Pick: Silver Stars

Minnesota Lynx at Phoenix Mercury (-12, 167 1/2)

The Lynx are still searching for their first win after seven games. They’ve lost twice to the Chicago Sky, the league’s worst team in 2006 and are last in the league in a number of categories including scoring (69.6), field goal percentage (.351), and 3-point shooting percentage (.247).

Meanwhile, the Mercury started the season 3-1 but have since lost two consecutive games. The dropped Sunday's game to the Liberty on a three-point play with 6.9 seconds remaining. The Mercury had a chance to win the game with a last-second shot, but Cappie Pondexter's attempt didn’t fall.

“You can’t dwell on a loss,” Phoenix guard Diana Taurasi said after the game. “We have tremendous confidence in whoever has the ball at the end of the game. It ended up in Cappie’s hands and she took a good shot. It just didn’t go in.”

          Pick: Lynx

              Tuesday, June 5

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Florida Marlins at Atlanta Braves (2:35 PM ET)
Marlins starter Sergio Mitre is 0-1 with a 6.14 ERA in four career games against the Braves. He's allowed 18 hits and 10 runs in just 14 2/3 innings. EDGE: BRAVES & OVER
Mitre has been brilliant on the road in 2007, going a perfect 2-0 with a 1.89 ERA in four starts. EDGE: MARLINS
Atlanta right-hander John Smoltz is 13-5 with a 2.69 ERA in 52 career appearances (23 starts) against Florida. BIG EDGE: BRAVES

Philadelphia left-hander Jamie Moyer is 4-3 with a 2.59 ERA in eight career starts against New York. He was handed a 5-3 loss against the Mets on April 12, when he allowed three earned runs and seven hits in six innings. SLIGHT EDGE: PHILLIES & UNDER

Glavine is 28-17 with a 3.80 ERA in 61 career starts against the Phillies and he's won both starts against them this season. BIG EDGE: METS

Chicago Cubs at Milwaukee Brewers (8:05 PM ET)
Chicago left-hander Ted Lilly pitched brilliantly in his only career start against Milwaukee on April 25, allowing just one earned run and six hits in seven innings of work. EDGE: CUBS
Lilly is a perfect 2-0 with a 4.01 ERA in four road starts this season. He surrendered five runs and six hits in his last road start against the Dodgers, which turned into a 9-8 no-decision loss for the Cubs. SLIGHT EDGE: CUBS
Brewers right-hander Claudio Vargas is 0-2 with a 9.00 ERA in six career starts against the Cubs. He's been touched up for 16 runs and 22 hits in 16 innings of work. BIG EDGE: CUBS & OVER

New York Yankees at Chicago White Sox (8:11 PM ET)

Clippard has given up four home runs in just 15 career major league innings. EDGE: OVER
White Sox left-hander Mark Buehrle is an unimpressive 1-4 with a 6.42 ERA in six career starts against the Yankees. EDGE: YANKEES
Buehrle has allowed four earned runs or less in all ten starts this season. He's 19-8 with a 3.67 ERA in 34 career starts in the month of June. BIG EDGE: WHITE SOX
The Yankees are 1-11 in their last 12 road games versus a left-handed starter.

Detroit Tigers at Texas Rangers (8:35 PM ET)
Detroit starter Nate Robertson is an even 3-3 with a 2.89 ERA in eight career starts against Texas. He's walked just 11 Rangers in 56 career innings against them. SLIGHT EDGE: TIGERS & UNDER

Boston's Daisuke Matsuzaka is 4-1 with a 3.77 ERA in five road starts this season. The Red Sox haven't lost a game away from Fenway Park with him on the mound since a 2-1 loss to Toronto. BIG EDGE: RED SOX
Matsuzaka allowed a season-high 12 hits in a 8-4 loss to the Cleveland Indians last time out. He's also allowed a home run in five straight starts. EDGE: A'S & OVER
Athletics left-hander Lenny DiNardo is 1-2 with a 1.96 ERA in nine home appearances this season. EDGE: UNDER
DiNardo has made just one start this season and stamina will certainly be an issue against the Red Sox team that wears down starting pitchers. EDGE: RED SOX
The OVER is 7-1 in Matsuzaka's last eight starts overall.

Minnesota Twins at Los Angeles Angels (10:05 PM ET)
Minnesota starter Scott Baker is 0-2 with a 6.14 ERA in three career starts against Los Angeles. BIG EDGE: ANGELS
The Twins have picked up victories in all three of Baker's starts this season, as the right-hander is 1-0 with a 2.16 ERA on the road this season in just one start. SLIGHT EDGE: TWINS
Angels right-hander Kelvim Escobar has enjoyed pitching at Angel Stadium in 2007, posting a 4-2 record and 2.39 ERA in seven starts. BIG EDGE: ANGELS
Escobar has struggled in his career against the Twins, going 4-6 with a 5.59 ERA in 15 career appearances. EDGE: TWINS
The Angels are 8-0 in Escobar's last eight starts versus the AL Central Division.

                NBA
                Finals Preview

The NBA Finals are set with Cleveland and San Antonio, meaning it is time to look at numerous betting opportunities that could be available. For starters, early action has come hard on Cleveland to win the best of seven game series. The Cavaliers opened as +400 underdogs to win this series and have been bet down to +350 dogs. This is not necessarily an indication that sharp bettors believe LeBron James and the rest of the Cavs are a strong wager, rather just a better payday if they do manage to pull the upset.

Cleveland on the season is now 62-36 with 53-42-3 ATS record. A good portion of that spread record being so positive has come in the postseason with an 11-4-1 ATS record including covering seven in a row. Coach Mike Brown’s Cavaliers are 25-24 on the road with a 27-20-2 against the spread mark. Cleveland is a very impressive 6-1-1 ATS on the playoff road. Dating back to January, they are 20-7-1 ATS on the road as visitors. As a road underdog they are 13-14 and stalwart 19-8 ATS. In Game One they are presently listed as a 7.5-point underdog at Sportsbook.com. This will be just the fourth time all season LeBron and the boys will be an underdog of more than seven points. (1-2, 2-1 ATS)

At home the Cavaliers are 37-12 and 26-22-3 ATS. Based on conventional wisdom they could be a slight underdog or favorite playing at Quicken Loans Arena. As a home favorite the Cavs are 35-10, 24-20-1 ATS, when listed as the home underdog they are 2-2 SU and ATS. In all games in which Cleveland have been in +3 to -3 point range this season, they were 16-8 and 15-8-1 ATS.

San Antonio will be out for 4th NBA title in nine seasons with its veteran cast. The Spurs will open at home where they are 38-12 and 26-22-2 ATS. In the post-season the Duncan Gang is 8-2 SU and ATS at the AT&T Center. Since New Year’s Eve, San Antonio 23-3 and 18-8 ATS when favored by more than seven points at home and 8-0 and 7-1 ATS most recently. The Spurs are 11-2 and 10-2-1 ATS as playoff favorite in 2007.

The Spurs are 32-16 on the road with 26-21-1 ATS mark. If by chance they are a road favorite in any of the games in Cleveland, they are 28-13 and 22-18-1 ATS. The road underdog role has San Antonio a pedestrian 3-3 SU and ATS.

Speculation by the rank and file suggests the Cavs can get off to fast start with San Antonio last playing on May 30. While they may be a little rusty to start, this grizzled bunch is 8-2 and 7-3 ATS when playing with three or more days rest this season. Cleveland is not nearly as strong in exact same situation with 7-3 mark covering only four times.

The Cavaliers were outstanding playing against the presumed tougher Western Conference with 19-11 record, covering an astounding 20 times. The Spurs were 20-10 playing versus teams from the East with undistinguished 15-15 ATS mark.

What is interesting to note is Cleveland won both games between these teams in the regular season as the underdog. In the last nine years the eventual champion has never beaten the other team twice during the record season. There have been eight instances during this time span (no interleague games in 1999 strike season) and the NBA champions split six times with finals opponent and twice has lost both games like San Antonio did during the regular season. The subsequent champs were 7-11 and 6-12 ATS during the regular year against the other conference champions, proving the playoffs are far different than the normal season.

                  Baseball Today - June 5

                  STARS Monday

-Jon Garland, White Sox, gave up two runs - one earned - in 8 1-3 innings to help the Chicago White Sox top the New York Yankees 6-4.

-Alfonso Soriano, Cubs, had five hits, including a three-run homer, to help the Chicago Cubs defeat Milwaukee 7-2.

-Gary Matthews Jr., Angels, had four hits, including his third career grand slam, and five RBIs in the Los Angels Angels' 16-3 drubbing of Minnesota.

-Eric Chavez, Athletics, hit a two-out homer in the 11th inning to lift Oakland to a 5-4 win over Boston.

GOOD AND BAD NEWS FOR YANKS

The New York Yankees were defeated 6-4 by the Chicago White Sox on Monday but got some good news on the medical front. Roger Clemens' MRI exam in Tampa, Fla., revealed some disrupted scar tissue - nothing that should prevent him from starting Saturday against Pittsburgh. Andy Pettitte felt better after leaving Sunday's start against the Red Sox with a stiff lower back. He expects to pitch Friday against the Pirates.

                  CYCLE

Oakland's Mark Ellis became the first player to hit for the cycle against the Boston Red Sox since 1978 in the Athletics' 5-4, 11-inning victory on Monday. It was the 17th cycle in A's history dating back to 1901 and first since Eric Byrnes did it on June 29, 2003, against San Francisco.

                  SORIANO HEATING UP

Alfonso Soriano had his first five-hit game since Sept. 17, 2002, as a member of the New York Yankees, in the Chicago Cubs' 7-2 win over Milwaukee on Monday. Soriano has homered in each of his last three games and the win was the second in a row for the Cubs since manager Lou Piniella was ejected on Saturday and subsequently suspended four games for a tirade following a close call at third base.

                  ANGELS BEDEVILING OPPONENTS

The Los Angeles Angels pounded Minnesota 16-3 on Monday. Every starter in the Angels lineup had at least one hit and a run scored in the triumph. The Angels' 23 hits were the most the team has had since May 10, 2002, when they had 24 against the Chicago White Sox. The Angels are off to the best start in franchise history at 37-22 and are a major league-best 23-8 at home. They've won 15 of their last 19 overall.

                  SPEAKING

''My wife was very nervous. At the hotel, she was shaking.'' - Atlanta rookie Yunel Escobar, on the excitement of being called up to the major leagues last week. Escobar went 4-for-4 and hit his first career homer in the Braves' 6-4 loss to Florida on Monday.

                  SEASONS June 5

1911 - Boston's Smoky Joe Wood struck out three Chicago White Sox pinch hitters in the ninth to preserve a 5-4 win.

1915 - Philadelphia's Grover Cleveland Alexander lost his no-hitter when Artie Butler punched a single with two outs in the ninth. Alexander struck out Bob Bescher for the final out to beat St. Louis 3-0. Alexander went on to pitch three more one-hitters that season.

1949 - Commissioner Happy Chandler lifted the ban on all players who jumped to Mexico, starting in 1946.

1955 - New York's Mickey Mantle hit a home run off Chicago's Billy Pierce that traveled an estimated 550 feet. The ball cleared the left-field upper deck at Comiskey Park.

1959 - Pittsburgh's Dick Stuart hit the longest home run at Forbes Field. His shot off Chicago pitcher Glenn Hobbie cleared the center field wall.

1966 - Leo Cardenas of the Reds hit four home runs in a doubleheader against the Chicago Cubs. Cardenas hit two home runs in each game as Cincinnati won the opener 8-3, but dropped the second game 9-5.

1986 - San Diego's Steve Garvey was ejected for the first time in his career when he argued a play at home plate. Garvey, the on-deck hitter, protested the last out of a triple play by the Atlanta Braves. Television replays showed that Bip Roberts was safe. The Padres lost 4-2.

1989 - The Blue Jays lost their debut in the SkyDome as Glenn Braggs hit a two-run homer to lead the Milwaukee Brewers past Toronto 5-3. The $375 million complex featured a $100 million, four-section, retractable roof.

1997 - Alex Rodriguez of the Mariners became the first Seattle player to hit for the cycle in a nine-inning game. He completed the cycle with a double in the ninth of a 14-6 win at Detroit.

2001 - Colorado pitcher Mike Hampton had two homers, three RBIs and recorded his eighth win as Colorado defeated Houston 9-4.

                    Baltimore at Seattle
The Orioles have watched their bullpen blow back-to-back games and are in need of a solid effort tonight from their starter, Brian Burres. Although a relative unknown, Burres has looked solid in back-to-back wins over Oakland and the Angels, holding those teams to two runs on six hits over 11 innings. As a team, Baltimore has won three of his last four starts with the only loss coming by a run against A.J. Burnett in Toronto (2-1). Burres' counterpart, Cha Seung Baek, has been touched for five runs in two of his last three starts. The Orioles look like a decent underdog pick (+150) in this one according to Dunkel, which has Baltimore favored straight up by 1/2 a run. Dunkel Pick: Baltimore (+150). Tuesday, June 5

                        HOT

Randy Johnson (Arizona Diamondbacks) – Johnson seems to have gotten his hands on a time machine. The veteran has been the Big Unit of old, going 3-0 with a sparkling 1.02 ERA in his last three outings. In two of those games he pitched six one-hit, shutout innings and all three contests played under the total. The D-backs are listed as –131 favorites against the Giants tonight.

Chris Young (San Diego Padres) – Young has won four of his last five starts and hasn’t given up more than two earned runs in any of those games. In his most recent start, he went seven innings allowing just four hits and no earned runs while striking out seven. The Padres host the Los Angeles Dodgers tonight as -140 and Young is 2-1 with a remarkable 0.66 ERA at home this season.

John Smoltz (Atlanta Braves) – Aside from his last start in which he got roughed up early and had to leave the game with a finger injury, Smoltz has been fantastic this year. He is 7-2 with a 2.82 ERA and has won six of his last nine trips to the hill. The Braves take on the Florida Marlins tonight with books setting Atlanta as a –215 home favorite. Smoltz is 4-1 with a 1.54 ERA at home this year and is 16-5 with a 2.69 ERA in his career against Florida.

                        COLD

Matt Cain (San Francisco Giants) - The Giants’ young fireballer has started the year 2-5 with a 3.42 ERA. Over his last six outings he has just one victory and has allowed an average of 3.5 runs per start. The Giants will look to snap a five-game losing streak tonight when they face the Diamondbacks as –123 underdogs. Cain has faced the D-backs twice this year, going 1-0 and giving up just one hit and one earned run in each.

Jorge De La Rosa (Kansas City Royals) – De La Rosa may as well have been pitching with a beach ball in his last two starts when he allowed a total of 14 earned runs on 14 hits in just 9 1/3 innings pitched. The Indians roughed up De La Rosa for nine earned runs on six hits in 4 1/3 innings in one of those starts. Oddsmakers haven’t forgotten about that start, setting the Royals as +242 underdogs tonight.

                        Other notables:

C.C. Sabathia (Cleveland Indians) - Sabathia is 2-0 with a 4.19 ERA in his last three outings and is 8-1 on the season.

Vicente Padilla (Texas Rangers) - Padilla has lost five of his last seven starts and is 1-2 in his last three with an ugly 9.00 ERA.

                          Tuesday, June 5

San Francisco Giants at Arizona Diamondbacks

Randy Johnson has won his last three starts and is starting to look more like the five-time Cy Young award winner we all remember.

The Big Unit’s last start was a 4-3 win over the Philadelphia Phillies in which he allowed just one hit in six shutout innings despite only throwing 61 pitches. Johnson was removed by manager Bob Melvin to save his arm.

The left-hander is now looking for his first four-game win streak in a single season since 2005 and that form coincides with Arizona winning nine of its last 10 games. Johnson faces struggling Giants pitcher Matt Cain (2-5, 3.42 ERA), who is winless in his last three starts.

                          Pick: Arizona –131

Boston Red Sox at Oakland Athletics

The best team in baseball is starting to look just a little shaky. The Boston Red Sox have lost three of their last four games and are looking to avoid their first three-game losing streak of the season when they face the Oakland Athletics tonight.

Despite arriving at their hotel at 5:30 a.m. local time on Monday morning, the Sox battled hard in their 6-5 loss in a series opener that went 11 innings last night. For today’s game they come armed with a good night’s sleep and Daisuke Matsuzaka on the hill.

Dice-K has won four of his last five starts and has a 7-3 record with a 4.83 ERA. But the Japenese star hasn’t been as sharp in his last two, giving up 19 hits and 11 runs over 11 2/3 innings. The A’s will counter with relief pitcher turned starter Lenny DiNardo (1-2, 1.80 ERA).

The Sox have the best record in baseball for a reason and won't lose three straight very often.

                          Pick: Red Sox –158

                          Detroit Tigers at Texas Rangers

The Detroit Tigers battled to a series split with Cleveland last weekend after losing the first two games. On Tuesday they send Nate Robertson (4-5, 4.25 ERA) to the mound looking to build on those wins.

Robertson is 1-4 with a 7.01 ERA in his last five starts, squandering a three-run, first-inning lead in his last outing on Wednesday. He surrendered four runs and nine hits, including two home runs in five innings of that 5-3 loss to Tampa Bay.

The Tigers are hoping he can get back on track and tonight represents a great opportunity as he faces the team with the worst record in baseball, the Texas Rangers (20-37).

Robertson has an excellent record against Texas and has won all three of his starts at Rangers Ballpark posting a 1.71 ERA. The Rangers send the struggling Vicente Padilla to the mound. He's 2-8 with a 6.45 ERA.

                          Pick: Tigers –123
