    Six-pack for Friday

-- Mark Buehrle allowed two hits Thursday, but both were solo homers as Toronto beat the White Sox 2-0, in a game that took 1:50 to complete. Bad night for the vendors.

-- Quite a basketball game in Detroit Thursday; shouldn't it be easy for the Cavaliers to find guys who want to play on same team as Lebron? I mean, guys who can make jumpers.

-- How would you like to be Kobe Bryant's teammate? He must be a lot of fun to be around on a daily basis.

-- Am replacing my DirecTV with digital cable Friday; every time it rains, my dish service is disrupted for next 12 hours.
I am not particular about much, but I am about my TV.

-- With US Open just two weeks away, Phil Mickelson left Memorial after 11 holes, with an injured wrist.

-- I have never heard anything of this dog fighting; what is coming out now is really some sobering, ugly stuff.

Friday's list of 13: Tale of the Tape: Hoop coaching edition

With apologies to Nick Bakay, here is my first-ever Tale of the Tape, matching college hoop coaching against the NBA

-- College-- You get to make your own schedule; Wofford is often on it, and never on the road.
-- Pro-- Even the Knicks are spunky on their home court. Half the games are on the road, often on consecutive nights.
-- Edge-- College. Never let anyone else make your schedule.

-- Pro-- Even the benchwarmers are millionaires.
-- College-- Only the stars are getting paid (It's a joke, son!!!).
-- Edge-- NBA. When you control playing time, you control stats, which controls who gets paid, the ultimate hammer. A superior college player can now ruin his team by bolting to the NBA.

-- College-- You lose one game in March, you're a bum.
-- Pro-- You win 15 games in March, no one remembers.
-- Edge-- College. Nothing beats March Madness for fun and excitement. Not even a night in Toronto with Alex Rodriguez.

-- College-- You have to deal with parents, AAU coaches and siblings, not to mention boosters and alumni.
-- Pro-- You have to deal with agents, wives, groupies.
-- Edge-- Push. There are no winners in any equation that has lawyers, parents and groupies in it.

-- College-- Dick Vitale, once an outstanding college coach, is an announcer on some of your games.
-- Pro-- Dick Vitale once coached the Detroit Pistons, but had to quit, because he had too many ulcers from coaching.
-- Edge-- College. Anything Vitale can be good at, you can be good at, with the possible exception of raking in huge money for having no apparent skills.

-- College-- Each team has a cheerleading squad and a band.
-- Pro-- NBA teams have dance squads, who are dressed like hookers, only hookers act more lady-like.
-- Edge-- The pros, and it ain't even close, except at UNLV.

-- College-- You have to recruit 17-year old freshmen to play on your team.
-- Pro-- You have to draft and sign 18-year old sophomores.
-- Edge--Pros. Nothing is worse than sucking up to a teenager

-- College-- Billy Donovan was going to make $3.5M this year at Florida, had he stayed, top $$$ for a college coach.
-- Pro-- Billy Donovan is going to make $5.5M a year to coach in a league where he hasn't won a game, and where he was a marginal, at best, player.
-- Edge-- Pros. If I have to tell you why, please leave.

-- College-- You're 20-12; boosters want your butt canned
-- Pro-- You're 20-12, and the NFL season isn't over yet.
-- Edge-- The pros, unless you're Jerry Tarkanian, who didn't adapt well to the idea that he wouldn't always have the best players on the floor. And he rarely went 20-12 in college.

-- College-- A successful college coach can stay at one place for his whole career, and be treated like a king.
-- Pro-- Pat Riley was let go by the Lakers, faxed a resignation to the Knicks, and takes leave of absence every time he sees Dwyane Wade limping. And he is one of the great coaches.
-- Edge--College ball. See Pitino, Rick, or Calipari, John

      -- College-- Wednesday-Saturday conference games.
-- Pro-- Four games in five nights in four different cities.
-- Edge-- College, unless 6am wakeup calls are your thing.

-- College-- You have to go 6-0 in tournament to win a title.
-- Pro-- You can go 16-12 in tournament and win a title.
-- Edge-- Pros. Unless you like having May and June off.

In the end, I give a slight edge to college coaching, especially since low-to-mid major college coaches are now pulling in big money, some as much as $250,000 a year, and they don't have to try and stop Duncan and Nowitzki on consecutive nights.

              Hot Lines

              Friday, June 1

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lady luck: Friday’s best WNBA bets

              Chicago Sky at Washington Mystics (-9 ½, O/U 155 1/2)

The Mystics have been the equivalent of a punching bag to their opposition. They've lost all four of their games and failed to cover in each contest. Washington has to give a better defensive effort. The team is allowing the second-highest number of points per game (83.5) in the league.

Alana Beard still looks out of sorts. The Mystics shooting guard missed the season opener because of a shoulder injury and her offensive numbers are down across the board.

The Mystics should have an advantage tonight against the Sky. Chicago played at home Thursday night against the Connecticut Sun before traveling to Washington for Friday’s match.

              Pick: Mystics

New York Liberty at Minnesota Lynx (-2 ½, O/U 151)

The Liberty are 2-0 straight up and against the spread but a closer look at their competition takes some of the luster off that record. New York beat two bad teams (Chicago and Washington) at home and faced favorable lines in each contest.

The Lynx still haven’t won a game after five chances and the drought is causing frustration on the team.

“Right now, it looks really bad,” Lynx forward Svetlana Abrosimova told the Minneapolis-St. Paul Star Tribune after her team lost 89-75. “It’s really easy to fall apart right now. But we’re getting better. It’s hard to see, but we’re getting better. You can see it by what we do in practice.”

Too bad we can’t bet on scrimmages at Minnesota’s practice facilities.

              Pick: Liberty

Baseball – Hot & Cold Teams

                MLB
                Hot/Cold Teams

                Friday, June 1

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This week's biggest streaking and slumping MLB teams

                HOT

                Minnesota Twins

The Twins have won seven of their last eight games behind their rejuvenated bats. Minnesota is driving in almost seven runs per game during this stretch after losing 13 of 19 games to start the month of May.

The Twins lineup has a collective .300 batting average over the last eight games and it looks as if they've managed to figure out their issues against left-handed pitchers, winning the last two games versus southpaw hurlers.

Minnesota heads west for six games against the Oakland Athletics and Los Angeles Angels. Last season the Twins struggled on the West Coast, going 3-6 against the Angels, A’s and Seattle Mariners. Opening the series with Oakland will be rookie pitcher Kevin Slowey, who makes his MLB debut on Friday.

                Arizona Diamondbacks

Arizona is making a run for top spot in the NL West after winning eight of its last 10 games. The Diamondbacks are now only half a game behind the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Arizona swatted in 7.85 runs per game during this stretch, more than three runs above its season average. However, it has put up these numbers against teams like Houston and Philadelphia, both squads that are mired in slumps.

The D-backs face the NL’s top team this weekend when they travel to the Big Apple to play the New York Mets. It doesn’t get any easier after that with the San Francisco Giants, Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees scheduled for the next two weeks.

                Baltimore Orioles

Since the Red Sox have a stranglehold on the division lead, the real story in the AL East is the race for second. Surprisingly it is the Orioles who lead the battle for the silver medal.

Baltimore is below .500 (26-27) on the season, but if it can continue its five-game winning streak and lights-out pitching it could put some space between itself and the rest of the division. Orioles starters have only allowed two runs per game during this streak and have a collective ERA of 2.00.

While Baltimore’s run is turning heads, three of those five wins came against Kansas City. Now it must head to the West Coast to face the Seattle Mariners and Los Angeles Angels. Last year the O’s were 3-9 on the opposite coast.

                COLD

                Houston Astros

Houston has lost 10 straight games and 12 of its last 13, sending them on a nosedive to the bottom of the NL Central.

The Astros can’t hit and because they aren’t supplying run support, the pitching staff feels pressure to shut out every opponent. This vicious cycle is the reason why Houston has been outscored 20-72 during their slump.

They have one more series at Minute Maid Park, against the St. Louis Cardinals, and then hit the road to face the Colorado Rockies and the Chicago White Sox in interleague action. Houston is a dismal 10-17 away from home this season.

                Chicago Cubs

The Cubbies troubles at Wrigley Field continue after they dropped a three-game series against the Florida Marlins this week. Chicago is 10-15 at home this season and has lost eight of its last 10 games overall.

The Cubs have allowed over five runs against per game during this skid while countering with only three. Over the last seven days they are batting just .233 while the pitching staff has been pummeled for a collective ERA of just below 5.00.

Chicago has a final series at home against the Atlanta Braves before taking to the road for six games against the Milwaukee Brewers and then again facing the Braves at Turner Field. The Cubs are a surprising 12-14 away from home this season.

                Kansas City Royals

For a split second it looked as if Kansas City was righting the ship. But after dropping seven straight games the Royals have plummeted back to earth and into last place in the AL Central.

The power that had Kansas City winning eight of 10 games in the middle of May has gone missing. The Royals have been outscored 22-54 during the last seven games and have a futile .186 batting average during this slump. This season they are 10-14 on the road, far better than their 9-21 home record.

Kansas City is on the road for the next six games with series against improving Tampa Bay and the division-leading Cleveland Indians.

                        Dunkel Index

                        Minnesota at Oakland
The Twins turn to rookie Kevin Slowey to make his first MLB start tonight in place of Ramon Ortiz, who was banished to the bullpen. Slowey can't do much worse than Ortiz after the veteran went 0-4 with an 8.13 ERA in his last seven starts. And the rookie will have a hot team behind him as the Twins just completed a sweep over the White Sox and have won seven of their last eight overall. Oakland starter Joe Kennedy has dropped his last two decisions and was roughed up for seven runs on eight hits over 4 2/3 innings in his last appearance against Baltimore. He hasn't been much better against the Twins in his career as Kennedy comes in with a 2-4 record and 8.56 ERA in seven appearances. Minnesota looks like a good underdog pick (+128) according to Dunkel, which has the Twins favored straight up by 1 1/2. Dunkel Pick: Minnesota (+128). Here are all of today's games.

                          Hot Lines

                          Friday, June 1

                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Detroit Tigers at Cleveland Indians (-158, 10 ½)

Cleveland is hitting .286 as a team over the last week, averaging six runs per game. The Indians have also won six of their last eight games despite playing three games at Detroit and three games at Boston during that time.

Last night’s win over the Tigers makes the Indians 4-0 against Detroit this season, and don’t expect that to change with opposite ends of the two teams' rotations going head-to-head tonight.

Fausto Carmona has been absolutely lights out for Cleveland this season going 6-1 with a 2.89 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP in nine starts. Even more impressive is that only three of those starts have come at home where the Indians are 18-4 overall.

Mike Maroth has been as bad as Carmona has good. The 29-year-old left-hander is 3-2, but has a 5.04 ERA and a 1.61 WHIP in nine starts this season. The Tigers have lost his last two starts.

                          Pick: Indians -158

New York Yankees at Boston Red Sox (+101, 10)

No other 22-29 team would be favored on the road over the best team in the majors regardless of who is pitching.

Tim Wakefield is 4-2 with a 3.70 ERA in six starts against the Yankees at Fenway Park and the knuckleballer is 5-5 with a 3.36 ERA overall this year.

Though it won’t make much to keep the Yankees’ bats cold – New York is hitting just .265 away from home and are coming off a stretch that’s seen them score more than three runs just once in their last five games. Their 10-5 win over the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday was their first win in six games.

Chien-Ming Wang will start for New York.

                          Pick: Red Sox +101

Arizona Diamondbacks at New York Mets (-126, 8)

This is the highest line D-Backs pitcher Brandon Webb has seen since a trip to face the very same Mets on May 31 of last year (a game that saw him pitch seven innings of scoreless ball).

Webb is just 1-6 against the Mets in his career, but his subsidiary numbers against them are great with a 1.10 WHIP and a 2.59 ERA.

John Maine will pitch for the Mets. He’s struggled just slightly after a 5-0 start going 1-2 with a 5.62 ERA over his last three. Maine has also struggled at home this season going 1-2 with a 4.43 ERA and a 1.84 WHIP in four starts.

Arizona is also the hottest hitting team in baseball with a .335 batting average and an average of eight runs scored per game.

                          Pick: Diamondbacks +118

                            Streaking Pitchers

                            Friday, June 1

                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                            HOT

John Lackey (Los Angeles Angels) - Lackey is making an early case for the Cy Young award. With an 8-3 record on the season with a 2.36 ERA, Lackey has been outstanding for the Angels, -187 home favorites tonight against the Baltimore Orioles. Lackey has been even better in his last three starts, going 3-0 with a miniscule 1.42 ERA and stifling 1.00 WHIP.

Jake Peavy (San Diego Padres) - If Lackey has a case for the AL Cy Young, then Peavy might be a lock for the award in the National League so far. The Padres' ace is 7-1 this season with a ridiculous 1.47 ERA, including 85 strikeouts in only 73 innings pitched. Peavy hasn't lost since April for San Diego, -219 favorites at RFK Stadium tonight against the Washington Nationals. With a 1.35 ERA and 0.90 WHIP in three starts, Peavy is undoubtedly baseball's hottest pitcher.

                            COLD

Javier Vazquez (Chicago White Sox) - While White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen is trying to take the blame for his team's recent struggles, it's Chicago's pitching that's the problem. Vazquez, without a win since April 13 and sporting a 6.41 ERA over his last three starts, is one of the main culprits. With the White Sox as +133 underdogs in Toronto tonight against the Blue Jays, there's plenty of reason to stay away from Vazquez until he proves he can cash a payday.

Tim Wakefield (Boston Red Sox) - The good news for Red Sox backers is that the Yankees are in town tonight; the bad news is that Wakefield has struggled lately. The veteran knuckleballer has a 7.11 ERA since May 11 with a .373 OBP against and 1.58 WHIP. Oddsmakers have adjusted for Wakefield's recent struggles at home, slapping the Red Sox with a rare home underdog tag (+101) tonight at Fenway Park.

                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Detroit at Cleveland (7:05 p.m. EDT). The Tigers and the AL Central-leading Indians renew their rivalry.

                              STARS

                              Thursday

                              ON THE HOP
