    Baseball – Hot Lines

    MLB
    Hot Lines

    Thursday, May 31

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Diego Padres at Pittsburgh Pirates (+117, 8 ½)

Greg Maddux is struggling to compete outside the pitcher-friendly confines of Petco Park this season. The 41-year-old is 0-2 with a 6.00 ERA and a 1.56 WHIP in five road starts.

He faces a Pirates team playing its best baseball of the season despite a 9-0 loss to the Padres last night. Pittsburgh has still won four of its last six games, with three wins coming as an underdog, and is currently alone in second place in the NL Central, 5 ½ games behind the Milwaukee Brewers.

Shawn Chacon will start for the Pirates. He is 1-0 with a 2.05 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP in seven relief appearances at home this season.

    Pick: Pirates +117

Cincinnati Reds at Houston Astros (+117, 9)

Cincinnati has no reason to get road favorite status under any circumstances, let alone with the inconsistent Bronson Arroyo on the mound. Arroyo is 0-1 with an 18.00 ERA in his last two starts after posting a 2.64 ERA in his first nine.

The Reds currently hold the worst record in the National League despite three straight wins, including the first two games of their series against the Astros. Expect Houston to lay it all on the line in the final game of the series, especially considering they’ve lost 10 straight games.

Woody Williams will start for the Astros. His last start against Cincinnati was his only win of the season. The 40-year-old right-hander allowed two earned runs in 6 2/3 innings in a 3-2 Houston win.

    Pick: Astros +117

St. Louis Cardinals at Colorado Rockies (-143, 9 ½)

Colorado had its seven game winning streak snapped on Thursday, mostly due to a dud performance from starter Jason Hirsh. Don’t expect the same result tonight with ace Aaron Cook on the mound (though an argument could be made for Jeff Francis). Cook went the distance in his last start, and has now won his last four decisions.

He’s backed by a Colorado team that’s averaging six runs per game over its last six games while playing the first three away from Coors Field. The Rockies' hot hitting should continue against reliever-turned-starter Brad Thompson. The 25-year-old has a 4.72 ERA in four starts this season.

Expect the Cardinals' struggles away from home to also continue – St. Louis is just 10-16 on the road this season and is being outscored by almost one and a half runs per game (3.81-5.27).

    Pick: Rockies -143

      Streaking Pitchers

      Thursday, May 31

      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

      HOT

Matt Cain (San Francisco Giants) - With the Giants priced as +127 underdogs tonight at Shea Stadium against the New York Mets, there's good reason to take the Giants on the moneyline. Cain has a sparkling 1.67 ERA away from home this season while averaging nearly a strikeout an inning. Bolstering the case for the young righty tonight is Cain's 2.84 in his last three starts.

C.C. Sabathia (Cleveland Indians) - Sabathia is one of the biggest reasons the Indians are one of the best teams in baseball this season. He carries a 7-1 record and 2.70 ERA at Jacobs Field, where the Indians are -136 home favorites tonight against the Detroit Tigers. Sabathia has been especially solid since May 12, posting a 2-0 record with a 2.25 ERA.

      COLD

Vicente Padilla (Texas Rangers) - When you give up an earned run per inning of work, that puts you on the fast track to making this list. That's exactly what the former Philly has done in his last three trips to the bump for the Rangers, who are +128 underdogs tonight against the Seattle Mariners. With a 9.00 ERA during the skid, you'd have to be reckless with your money to lay any of it down tonight on Padilla and the Rangers.

Bronson Arroyo (Cincinnati Reds) - Arroyo got off to a great start this season, but he's been pretty brutal in the month of May. Arroyo hasn't won a decision in four starts for the Reds, -125 road favorites tonight against the Houston Astros. The biggest problem for the righty has been with his control, as Arroyo has a .446 OBP against and 2.29 WHIP in his last three starts with a stiff 8.36 ERA.

        LIFTOFF

New York announced Wednesday that Roger Clemens will make his first start of the season on Monday at Chicago after the Rocket threw a bullpen session at Yankee Stadium. The 44-year-old Clemens has made three minor league starts since signing a prorated $28 million contract with the Yankees this month.

        SPEAKING

''I saw the ump say, 'You need to come touch first base,' and I was like, 'Oh, OK.' I didn't know what to do. It was weird, man. That was something totally different. But I like it. We won.'' - Minnesota's Torii Hunter after his four-pitch, bases-loaded walk forced in the winning run with two outs in the ninth inning and sent the Twins past the White Sox 7-6 on Wednesday.

1937 - Carl Hubbell's 24-game winning streak ended with a 10-3 loss to the Brooklyn Dodgers. Hubbell's last defeat came on July 13, 1936, 1-0 to the Chicago Cubs.

1964 - The New York Mets and the San Francisco Giants played the longest doubleheader in major league history - nine hours, 52 minutes - with the help of a 23-inning game in the nightcap that was won by the visiting Giants 8-6 on run-scoring hits by Del Crandall and Felipe Alou against Galen Cisco. The second game took 7:23 to play.

          SCOREBOARD

          Thursday, May 31

Cleveland at Detroit (8 p.m. EDT). The series is tied 2-2.

          STARS

          Wednesday

          - Tim Duncan and Tony Parker, Spurs. Each finished with 21 points to lead San Antonio into the NBA Finals with a 109-84 win over Utah.

          GOING FOR FOUR

San Antonio's 109-84 win over Utah on Wednesday night put them in the NBA Finals for the fourth time. They won it all in 1999, 2003 and '05.

          KOBE'S BEEF

Believing he had been insulted and misled, Kobe Bryant asked the Los Angles Lakers for a trade Wednesday and insisted nothing could change his mind. Then something did. He spoke with coach Phil Jackson and backed off his request. Bryant also told KLAC, the Lakers' flagship station, that he hadn't heard from owner Jerry Buss, indicating a conversation could go a long way toward resolving the matter.

          HURTING

The Jazz missed Derek Fisher and Deron Williams in their 109-84 loss to San Antonio on Wednesday night. Fisher missed the start of the game because he was flying back from New York, where his infant daughter was getting medical care for a rare eye condition, and Williams was slowed by a sprained right foot.

          SPEAKING

''Our first quarter was unbelievable. I can't remember, since I've been with the Spurs, shooting the ball like that. Our offense was great, our defense was great. ... You can't ask for a better start.'' - San Antonio's Tony Parker after the Spurs shot out to a 30-11 lead in the first quarter of their 109-84 win Wednesday night to advance to the NBA Finals.
