    Six-pack for Wednesday

I think the great majority of kids have no idea what coaches look for when recruiting high school basketball players, so here is a list of what I think most coaches look for.......

-- What is a player's college skill going to be? Defending? Passing? Shooting? Speed? Rebounding? Getting to loose balls? A kid needs a skill......the kids with multiple skills get the scholarships. Kids with one skill play D-III ball, which is a good level of basketball, just a lot less athletic.

-- Does a player possess toughness? Will he win 50-50 ball on the floor? Will he fight thru screens? Will he box out? Can he stop an opposing player from scoring?

-- How does he play without the ball? 10 guys on the court, only one ball. Solid players know what to do when others have the ball, whether on their team or the other side.

-- That said, we'd be naive to think ball skills don't matter, because they do. Shooting is always marketable, and so is passing. Not only are the teams that pass well the most fun to watch and play on, they also win more than most teams.

-- Do they make their teammates better, or are they all about themselves? College coaches need to win to keep their job, so they don't want destructive people around.....

-- The things that make a good recruit would be similar to in business, when you're hiring an employee; someone who is going to help the group improve, someone with the skills to help the team get better. Finding people like that is what the business or recruiting is all about.

Wednesday's list of 13: Nobody asked me, but..........

      13) Nobody pays to get into a ballpark to see an umpire, but don't tell Bob Davidson that; he called a balk in 12th inning at Shea Tuesday, with tying run on 1st. Look at the replay, and tell me what the pitcher did. This rattled Benitez, the pitcher, who then committed another balk with runner on third, and wound up giving up game-winning HR. Players are supposed to decide the outcome, but Davidson had a big role here.

      12) Lakers' owner Jerry Buss is 74 years old. The other night he was pulled over by the police at 1am, which is none of my business, but the freakin' guy had a 23-year old woman with him, so he had to be very unhappy when he had to spend the night in jail.

Let me see, I'm 47, and if I asked a 23-year old out, I'd either get spit on or laughed at. Or both. Then again, I don't own the Lakers and drive a gold Mercedes. Such is life.

      11) Paul Byrd starts for Indians Wednesday; he has walked three batters all season, while winning five games, an amazing stat. He is big reason why Indians look like a playoff team.

      10) Cub OF Angel Pagan is the only major leaguer whose first two big league homers both came on his birthday.

      9) Kevin Youkilis has nine consecutive multi-hit games; last Red Sox player to do that was Jim Rice, back in '78.

      8) Why is Erwin Santana so much better at home than away from home? It is almost to the point that Angels should think about using another starting pitcher when his turn comes up on road trips.

      7) Kansas basketball star Brandon Rush blew his ACL out on Thursday, which is why he withdrew from the NBA Draft; it is also a great reason why you don't hire an agent. If he had hired an agent and then blew his knee out, he'd be a tragedy, a kid the pros didn't want, who couldn't go back to college. As it stands now, he can play college ball, get an education and get that knee back to 100%.

      6) Musical genius Weird Al Yankovic is coming to Albany on Friday, and former American Idol winner Ruben Studdard will be here June 14. Who says nothing ever happens here?

      5) You wonder just how much more difficult the Michael Vick/ dog fighting thing is going to make it on future draft picks in the NFL? The exhaustive research that is done on these kids, in a billion dollar industry, and no one knew Vick was into all this? What kind of detectives do we have in this country?

      4) By the way, in the unlikely event that Vick was to have to sit out part or all of this season as a result of this mess, the backup QBs currently on Atlanta's roster are: DJ Shockley, Joey Harrington and Chris Redman. Quick, someone get Jeff George's number-- the Falcons might need him soon.

      3) Quote of the Day: "Miracles do happen, but one has to work very hard for them." Chaim Weizmann (1874-1952)

      2) I am waiting for a big league team to hire a pitching coach who will adopt the Japanese pitching philosophies in a major league organization, meaning, less power pitching, a lot more throwing in between starts, and more durable pitchers. With so many guys getting hurt, isn't it an idea worth trying?

      1) Matsuzaka is going to be the lightning rod for this; if he is the real deal over a full season, you can expect, in a copycat world, for teams to start leaning in this direction.

Spurs had 41-20 edge in free throws tried in Game 4 road win, as they took commanding 3-1 series lead; now they can eliminate a Jazz club that has lost 18 in row at Alamo. Spurs had five guys in double figures, Utah just two, as alarming lack of scorers on their second unit was again evident. Jazz shot 42-44-47% from floor in their three losses, 53.2% in their win. Duncan blocked five shots Monday, making it harder for Jazz to shoot 50%.

#4 Utah Jazz at #2 San Antonio Spurs
                Game 5 - Wednesday, May 30th, 9 p.m. Eastern (ESPN)

The Jazz are 0-18 SU in their last 18 trips to San Antonio and have to feel deflated after suffering through a rough fourth quarter in Game 4. The Spurs outscored Utah 28-17 in the fourth and saw four technical fouls by the Jazz, leading to the ejections of head coach Jerry Sloan and Derek Fisher. San Antonio ended up making more free throws (30) than field goals (28). BIG EDGE: SPURS
Deron Williams (27 points) and Carlos Boozer (18) were the only two Utah players to score in double figures in Game 4, which has become a major problem for the team in this series. Williams and Boozer have been the only consistent scorers throughout while the Spurs have seemed to have a different player step up in every game. This balance has helped put San Antonio just one game away from its second NBA Finals appearance in three years. EDGE: SPURS
The Spurs have closed out each of their first two playoff opponents at home on their first attempt - something that does not bode well for Utah. San Antonio beat Denver and Phoenix by a combined 23 points in earlier close-out games this postseason and should be primed to move on to the NBA Finals. EDGE: SPURS
San Antonio is 10-3-1 ATS in its last 14 games.
Utah is 9-4-1 ATS in its last 14 games.
Utah is 5-14 ATS in its last 19 road games.
Home team is 8-1 ATS in the last 9 meetings.
UNDER is 11-4 in San Antonio's last 15 as a favorite.

                5/28/07 - Game 4 - San Antonio 91, UTAH 79 (ATS winner: SA -2 | UNDER 190)
                Recap | Boxscore
SUMMARY: The Spurs made 19-of-25 free throws in the fourth quarter alone to turn a one-point lead into a rout. San Antonio scored just 13 points in the third to keep this at an UNDER pace and closed the deal by holding Utah to just 17 in the fourth, taking advantage of four technical fouls and two ejections en route to the victory.

                5/26/07 - Game 3 - UTAH 109, San Antonio 83 (ATS winner: Utah -2 | OVER 190.5)
                Recap | Boxscore
SUMMARY: After getting over some early nerves in the first quarter, the Jazz took advantage of foul trouble for the Spurs in rolling to an easy victory. Utah was outscored 23-15 in the first but got progressively stronger as the game went on while San Antonio went downhill offensively with Tim Duncan in foul trouble throughout. The Jazz outscored the Spurs 50-26 in the paint and scored 66 points after halftime to push the total OVER for the third time in the series.

                5/22/07 - Game 2 - SAN ANTONIO 105, Utah 96 (ATS winner: SA -6.5 | OVER 188)
                Recap | Boxscore
SUMMARY: For the second straight game, the Spurs used a big second quarter to distance themselves from the Jazz and then held on for the cover despite being outscored in the second half. San Antonio has outscored Utah by 15 points in the second quarter of each of the first two games, topping the 30-point mark both times. The Jazz have then averaged nearly 60 points in the second half of both games to force the total OVER despite having their rallies fall short each time.

                5/20/07 - Game 1 - SAN ANTONIO 108, Utah 100 (ATS winner: SA -6.5 | OVER 186.5)
                Recap | Boxscore
SUMMARY: The Jazz outplayed the Spurs in the second half, but it wasn't nearly enough to overcome a poor second quarter. Utah was outscored 31-16 in the second to enter halftime down, 54-36. The Spurs could not contain Deron Williams in the fourth though, when the second-year point guard scored 18 of his game-high 34 points. The heroics of Williams was almost enough to cover the spread for Jazz backers, but San Antonio's Michael Finley went 8-of-8 from the free-throw line to prevent that from happening. The 118 points scored between both teams after the break - including 68 in the fourth quarter alone - were more than enough to force an easy OVER.

REGULAR-SEASON SERIES RECAP: The home team won and covered each meeting during the regular season, with the Jazz also winning straight-up twice despite being an underdog in every game. It's important to note that the Jazz beat the Spurs in the first meeting when they were on fire to start the season and then were handled rather easily in the last one when they were struggling down the stretch. This could definitely be another series where home court plays an important factor in who advances though San Antonio is a far superior road team, proving that once again vs. Phoenix.

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Utah Jazz at San Antonio Spurs (-7, 189)

The fourth-quarter bump between Derek Fisher and Manu Ginobili that led to a technical foul on Fisher in Game 4 has a lot of people talking.

If they’re Spurs haters, then Ginobili has replaced Bruce Bowen and Robert Horry as San Antonio’s most hated man for using a flopping technique borrowed from his Argentine soccer compatriots. Spurs fans, on the other hand, view Ginobili’s Game 4 performance as confirmation that he’s a winner doing whatever it takes to win and willing to take a beating in the process.

Neutral observers likely think it’s a little bit of both. Ginobili might topple a little easier than your average male athlete in the prime of his life, but it’s hard to put down his repeated trips to the free throw line in the fourth quarter. The Spurs were favored on the road against a team undefeated on its home court in the postseason and Manu was the man to deliver the payday.

Any win in a seven-game series is crucial, but the difference between coming home 3-1 as opposed to 2-2 looms especially large for the Spurs on Wednesday. They finished off both the Denver Nuggets and the Phoenix Suns this postseason immediately after picking up the third win in each series. The Jazz, on the other hand, could be deflated by the manner in which Monday’s loss went down.

It seems like Utah hasn’t won in San Antonio since Adrian Dantley led the Jazz past the Iceman’s Spurs. The Game 4 loss doesn’t provide a good backdrop for Utah to snap that winless streak on Wednesday.

As for the points, well, San Antonio squeaked by in Games 1 and 2 and also covered the number to finish off their earlier series. It’s a lot of points to give, but that fourth quarter in Salt Lake City on Monday bought a few points worth of faith.

                  Pick: Spurs -7

                              Cleveland at Boston
After sweeping Detroit over the weekend, the Indians look to avoid getting swept by the red-hot Red Sox. It won't be easy as the Bosox, who have won five straight, will go with starter Daisuke Matsuzaka, who hasn't lost since April 17. But Cleveland's Paul Byrd has been just as good. The 36-year-old righthander is 4-0 with a 4.05 ERA in his last six starts and hasn't dropped a decision since April 21. He has been decent against the Sox as well with a 3-2 record and 4.54 ERA in six career starts. The Indians, who haven't been swept since losing three straight to the Yankees in early April, look like a good underdog pick (+210) to avoid the sweep today according to Dunkel, which has Cleveland favored straight up by 1/2 a run. Dunkel Pick: Cleveland (+210). Here are all of today's games.
