    Six-pack for Sunday

-- Its not often a team blows two saves and still wins, but Jays pulled it off in 13-inning win at Minnesota Saturday.

-- Astros have now lost seven games in a row, outscored by a total of 58-12.

-- When the Bronx Bombers fire Brian Cashman, I hope he writes a book; bet it would be very juicy.

-- Someone remind me why Texas fired Buck Showalter; it sure as hell hasn't helped them any.

-- Don't think Lou Piniella trusts his bullpen anymore, as he let Carlos Zambrano throw 125 pitches in 4-2 win Saturday.

-- Friend of mine called my cellphone from San Francisco Saturday, to report what a beautiful ballpark the Giants play in. Not a bad seat in the house, right on the water.

Cleveland has led both games at half, 41-35 and 50-38; they scored 26 points in second half Thursday, after a 34 point explosion in second quarter. At crunch time, Lebron has to shoot, because they have no role players with the onions to knock down a key basket. Both series games ended 79-76, and that is indicative of how ugly the games have been.

#1 Detroit Pistons at #2 Cleveland Cavaliers
              Game 3 - Sunday, May 27th, 8:30 p.m. Eastern (TNT)

Detroit point guard Chauncey Billups continues to be a major disappointment in this series, as he has totaled 12 turnovers and 11 assists through the first two games with no steals. While Billups is averaging 13 points per game, he has taken just 13 shots total, the same number center Chris Webber attempted in Game 2 alone. Insiders expect Billups to look for his shot more in Game 3. EDGE: PISTONS
Tayshaun Prince has done an outstanding job for the Pistons containing Cleveland star LeBron James, but his offense has struggled mightily as a result. Prince has made only 1-of-19 shots through the first two games following an 0-for-8, 1-point performance in Game 2. With James back at home for the next two games, Prince's defensive assignment could be even more difficult, which means his offense might continue to suffer as well. EDGE: CAVS
The Cavs are just 1-5 in their last six games when scoring 85 points or less and have won their last 12 games when scoring more than 85. The key for Cleveland in Game 3 is to push the tempo and not put too much pressure on James to win the game at the end. In two of the three straight wins for the Cavs in last year's second-round series with Detroit, they scored 86 points. EDGE: CAVS & OVER
Cleveland is 8-1 ATS in its last 9 against Central Division opponents.
Detroit is 20-7 ATS in its last 27 road games.
Underdog is 11-1 ATS in the last 12 meetings.
UNDER is 23-4 in the last 27 meetings.

EASTERN CONFERENCE FINALS (HOME team in CAPS)

              RESULTS

Pistons lead 2-0 SU (0-2 ATS)

              5/24/07 - Game 2 - DETROIT 79, Cleveland 76 (ATS winner: Cleve +5.5 | UNDER 174.5)
              Recap | Boxscore
Summary: This game mirrored Game 1 all the way down to the final score. The only difference was that the Cavs exploded for a series-high 34 points in the second quarter to take a commanding 50-38 lead at halftime, and LeBron James took the potential game-winning shot in the final seconds but missed and was not fouled.

              5/20/07 - Game 1 - DETROIT 79, Cleveland 76 (ATS winner: Cleve +6.5 | UNDER 177)
              Recap | Boxscore
Summary: Ugly is just one of many negative words one could use to describe this game - unless you appreciate defense. The Cavs shot just 37 percent from the field but outrebounded the Pistons 49-41 and forced 16 turnovers, including seven by Detroit point guard Chauncey Billups. That allowed Cleveland to stay in this game throughout, as the team managed to take 14 more shots than the home team. LeBron James had a chance to tie the game for the Cavs in the final seconds but instead chose to pass the ball to a wide-open Donyell Marshall, who missed what could have been the game-winning 3-pointer. Could have been is what everybody talked about afterwards and what Detroit backers felt should have been an easy cover.

              SCHEDULE

5/27/07 - Game 3 - Detroit Pistons at CLEVELAND CAVALIERS (TNT | 8:30 PM ET)
5/29/07 - Game 4 - Detroit Pistons at CLEVELAND CAVALIERS (TNT | 8 PM ET)
5/31/07 - Game 5 - Cleveland Cavaliers at DETROIT PISTONS (TNT | 8 PM ET)
6/2/07 - Game 6 - Detroit Pistons at CLEVELAND CAVALIERS (TNT | 8:30 PM ET)
6/4/07 - Game 7 - Cleveland Cavaliers at DETROIT PISTONS (TNT | 8 PM ET)

              REGULAR-SEASON RESULTS

Detroit wins 3-1 SU (2-2 ATS)
              UNDER 3-1

              4/8/07 - DETROIT 87, Cleveland 82 (ATS winner: Cleve +5.5 | UNDER 181)
              3/7/07 - Cleveland 101, DETROIT 97 (ATS winner: Cleve +5 | OVER 179)
              2/4/07 - Detroit 90, CLEVELAND 78 (ATS winner: Detroit +2.5 | UNDER 184)
              12/27/06 - Detroit 87, CLEVELAND 71 (ATS winner: Detroit +3 | UNDER 184)

REGULAR-SEASON SERIES RECAP: LeBron James scored a season-high 41 points in the third meeting at Detroit to lead Cleveland to its first win against the Pistons since Game 5 of their second-round series last May. That was the only win in the regular-season series for the Cavs, as Detroit won both meetings in Cleveland by an average of 14 points. That lack of a home-court edge along with the Pistons' dominance on the road - where they were an Eastern Conference-best 27-14 - could be the difference.

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                Detroit Pistons at Cleveland Cavaliers (-3 ½, 172 ½)

First it was LeBron James’ decision to pass instead of shoot at the end of Game 1, then it was the non-call as James tried to even the series in Game 2. The Cavaliers came up short in both games and, now that they’re down 2-0 to the Pistons, there’s no more time for excuses.

The good news for Cleveland is that they had a shot to win both games at the Palace of Auburn Hills. Besides, it’s not like they haven’t been down 2-0 to the Pistons before.

"We can draw on our experience from last year, and although they did what they had to do, we can do the same on our court and make this a three-game series," guard Eric Snow told the Cleveland Plain Dealer. "Last year's experience tells us that we've done it before, and it can be done."

Last spring the Cavs were smoked in Game 1, then staged a late rally to make Game 2’s final score respectable. They then rattled off three straight wins to take the lead in the second-round series before crashing out of the playoffs.

The 2007 Cavaliers are an improvement over last year’s squad and it shows in the line – they were getting 4 ½ points at home for last year’s Game 3. That means this Sunday’s line is an 8-point swing from where the teams stood just over a year ago.

The line shift is justifiable. Cleveland coach Mike Brown has a better defensive strategy this time around and a more trustworthy rotation.

The Pistons proved in their recent second-round series with the Chicago Bulls that they can get complacent after building up a lead. It’s time for James to take advantage of any and all complacency and put Cleveland back in the series.

                Pick: Cavaliers -3 ½

                  Sunday, May 27

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                  Sunday MLB Gameday

Several teams will send their aces to the mound on Sunday as they try to close out the week with a victory. Here's a look at some of the day's most notable pitching matchups:

Los Angeles Angels at New York Yankees, 1:05pm ET
John Lackey (7-3, 2.38 ERA) vs. Mike Mussina (2-3, 6.52 ERA)

Lackey continues to be one of the best pitchers in the American League this season, with a 7-3 record and a 2.38 ERA. The righthander has picked up a victory in each of his last three starts - beating each of the Rangers, Mariners, and Tigers on the road. Last time out, vs. Detroit, Lackey allowed one earned run on three hits over five innings.

Mussina, on the other hand, has been knocked around in each of his last two starts, losing to both the White Sox and the Red Sox. On May 16 against Chicago the righthander gave up five earned runs on eight hits over 5 1-3 innings. On May 22 against Boston Mussina surrendered seven earned runs on 10 hits over 6 2-3 innings.

Tampa Bay Devil Rays at Chicago White Sox, 2:05pm ET
Scott Kazmir (2-2, 3.81 ERA) vs. Javier Vazquez (2-2. 4.21 ERA)

Kazmir only has two wins on the season, but that's mostly because his team hasn't been scoring for him early in games. The lefthander has allowed two or fewer earned runs in five of his last six starts (giving up four over 6 1-3 innings vs. Toronto on May 11). Kazmir held the Mariners to only two earned runs over five innings in his last start.

Vazquez will face the Devil Rays on Sunday after having his Saturday start rained out. The righthander has failed in all four attempts to pick up a win in the month of May, going 0-2 with two no-decisions. Last time out, against the Cubs in interleague play, Vazquez surrendered five earned runs on five hits over seven innings, striking out eight.

Milwaukee Brewers at San Diego Padres, 4:05pm ET
Jeff Suppan (6-4, 3.49 ERA) vs. Jake Peavy (6-1, 1.63 ERA)

Suppan has hit a rough patch, allowing four earned runs in each of his past three starts (and going 1-2 in those contests). Overall the righthander is 6-4 on the season with a 3.49 ERA and 34 strikeouts (and only 15 walks) through 67 innings. Last time out, against the Dodgers, Suppan surrendered four runs on six hits in six innings in a victory.

Peavy has lost only once this season, and that was back on April 30 against the Nationals. In his four outings since then the righthander has surrendered just three earned runs on 17 hits over 27 innings, picking up three wins and a no-decision. Last time out, against the Cubs, Peavy gave up one earned run on four hits over six innings.

Cleveland Indians at Detroit Tigers, 8:05pm ET
Fausto Carmona (5-1, 2.77 ERA) vs. Mike Maroth (3-1, 4.94 ERA)

Carmona had picked up five straight victories until his last outing against the Royals, in which he allowed three earned runs on nine hits over six innings. Prior to that game the righthander had beaten the Twins, Orioles, Orioles, Athletics, and Twins in order. Carmona has a 2.77 ERA this year, but has fanned only 20 hitters over 55 1-3 innings.

Maroth returned from an illness to make his start against the Angels on Tuesday, but he surrendered five earned runs on seven hits over seven innings and was tagged with a loss. The lefthander has won just once over the past month, beating the Twins with a strong performance back on May 11. Overall Maroth has fanned just 19 and walked 17.

                        Washington at St. Louis
The Nats have continued to play good baseball on their current road trip, taking four-of-six so far and winning 11 of their last 16 overall. Even in their losses the Nats have had chances to win as three of the five have come by just a run. Today Washington will go with Matt Chico, who has pitched the Nats to wins his last three times out (vs. Florida, Atlanta and Cincinnati). The Cards did pick up a win last night, but have dropped eight of their last 14 with three of the wins coming against lower-rated Pittsburgh. Washington looks like a good underdog pick (+170) in this one according to Dunkel, which has the Nats favored straight up by 1/2 a run. Dunkel Pick: Washington (+170). Here are all of today's games.

                          Hot Lines

                          Sunday, May 27

Pittsburgh Pirates at Cincinnati Reds: (-115, 9 ½)

Pittsburgh pitcher Zach Duke is, to say it nicely, a bit of a disappointment this season. After a stellar rookie season in 2005 and a promising 2006, the left-hander has only one win 10 starts this year.

Duke owns a 5.56 ERA and is coming off his worst start of the year this past Tuesday. However, outside of the loss to the St. Louis Cardinals, he has shown improvement in recent starts (2.87 ERA in five games before Tuesday) and now faces the only team he has won against this season: the Reds.

"I'm not going to get too down on myself," Duke told MLB.com. "I believe I can get through this and put a pretty good year together."

Pittsburgh’s bats will be there to lend a hand on Sunday if Duke struggles again. The Pirates snapped a batting drought against Cincinnati, scoring 19 runs in the first two games of this series.

                          Pick: Pirates +107

Houston Astros at Arizona Diamondback: (+122, 8)

The Astros' power outage at the plate has cost them eight of their last 10 games, averaging just over two runs per game during this skid. They have been outscored 27-8 in the first three games with the Diamondbacks but thankfully, won’t need too many runs to avoid the sweep on Sunday, due to staff ace Roy Oswalt taking the mound.

Oswalt has never lost to Arizona, posting a perfect 6-0 record in seven starts versus the D-backs with a 1.98 career ERA. This season, the righty is 6-3 overall and has allowed more than three earned runs in only three starts.

                          Pick: Astros -130

Cleveland Indians at Detroit Tigers: (+102, 9 ½)

Going deep into games is not one of Mike Maroth’s strengths. The Tigers lefty has pitched seven complete innings only once this season but may be asked to log some quality time on Sunday with Detroit’s bullpen getting thin.

The Tigers relievers, which were the team’s biggest weapons coming into the season, have the worst bullpen ERA in the American League and are missing key arms heading into tonight’s series finale on Sunday Night Baseball.

Detroit has been without reliever Joel Zumaya since early May but now must continue without help from Fernando Rodney, who was put on the 15-day DL yesterday, and Jason Grilli, who left Saturday’s game after getting hit in the knee by the baseball. Saturday’s 6-3 loss to the Indians was the first time the Tigers bullpen gave up a lead after the seventh inning since losing Zumaya.

"Now it's obvious that (the bullpen's trouble) is starting to cost us," closer Todd Jones told the Detroit Free Press. "I'm just as guilty. Everybody needs to realize there is a bunch of opportunities out there to be had.”

                          Pick: Indians -110

                            Streaking Pitchers

                            Sunday, May 27

                            Hot Pitchers

Fausto Carmona (Cleveland Indians) - It's amazing what a season of experience can do for an athlete. The Indians' right-hander was a disastrous 1-10 last season with a 5.42 ERA but has come out blazing this season. He is 5-1 with an impressive 2.77 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP and has not allowed more than three earned runs in his last seven starts. Carmona opened the season with a loss to the Chicago White Sox but is 5-0 with a 1.94 ERA since that defeat. Oddsmakers list the Indians as -105 favorites against the Detroit Tigers.

John Lackey (Los Angeles Angels) - Lackey looks to become this season's first pitcher to reach eight wins when he faces the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium. Overall, the veteran righty is 7-3 with a sparkling 2.38 ERA and a 1.26 WHIP and is 4-2 with a 2.58 ERA and 1.23 WHIP outside Angel Stadium. Lackey is 3-6 with a 5.76 ERA in his career against the Yankees but has improved drastically since 2005 with a 2-1 record and 3.80 ERA against the Bronx Bombers. Oddsmakers list Los Angeles at +128 today.

Jake Peavy (San Diego Padres) - There is no pitcher in MLB that has been more dominant this season than Jake Peavy. The right-hander is 6-1 with a league-leading 1.63 ERA and 1.15 WHIP and is 3-1 with a 2.52 ERA and 1.19 WHIP at Petco Park. Furthermore, Peavy is 3-0 with a 1.00 ERA in his last four starts and has not allowed more than four runs in any of his 10 starts this season. The Padres are 26-9 in Peavy's last 35 starts against the NL Central and today's price reflects that. They are listed at -180 against the Milwaukee Brewers.

                            Cold Pitchers

Zach Duke (Pittsburgh Pirates) - Third-year starter Zach Duke is coming off his career-high sixth straight loss on Tuesday to the St. Louis Cardinals. The left-hander is 1-5 with a towering 5.56 ERA and a 1.69 WHIP and 1-3 with a 6.08 ERA and a 1.76 WHIP outside at PNC Park. Overall, Duke is 2-14 with a 5.04 ERA in 22 road starts since the start of last season and the Pirates are 6-21 in the lefty's last 27 road contests. Oddsmakers list the Pirates as +107 underdogs against the Cincinnati Reds.

Carlos Silva (Minnesota Twins) - Silva hopes to avoid setting a dubious record against the Toronto Blue Jays as he stares at his fifth straight loss. The right-hander is coming off his worst outing of the season Monday against the Texas Rangers, in which he gave up seven runs off nine hits. Overall, Silva is 2-5 with a 4.47 ERA and 1.49 WHIP and 2-3 with a massive 6.18 ERA and 1.66 WHIP outside the Metrodome. The veteran righty is 0-2 with a 7.50 ERA in his career against the Blue Jays. Oddsmakers list Minnesota as a +107 home underdog against Toronto.
