    Weekend Sports Preview

With the NHL on break until the Stanley Cup final begins on Monday, sports fans and bettors will have to settle for the NBA playoffs, a full slate of baseball, Week 13 in the AFL, the WNBA, NASCAR and Formula 1 this weekend. That should be enough to tide them over.

The NBA takes a short break as well, with no games on Friday night. The Western Conference final resumes in Utah on Saturday, as the Spurs and Jazz clash in Game 3.

Sunday’s lone game has the Eastern Conference finals heading to Cleveland, where the Pistons and Cavaliers face off in Game 3 of that series.

On the diamond this weekend Cleveland and Detroit battle in a big divisional tilt in the Motor City that highlights the American League schedule. The rest of the AL slate includes Oakland at Baltimore, the Angels at Yankees, Boston at Texas, Toronto at Minnesota, Seattle at Kansas City and Tampa Bay at the White Sox.

In the National League the best matchup of the weekend has Milwaukee visiting San Diego. Also on tap in the NL are the Mets at Florida, Pittsburgh at Cincinnati, Philadelphia at Atlanta, Washington at St. Louis, Houston at Arizona, Colorado at San Francisco and the Cubs at the Dodgers.

Week 13 in the AFL kicks of on Friday night with Utah at Orlando (-8) and San Jose at Nashville (+6). There are five games on the gridiron on Saturday including Los Angeles at Kansas City (-5.5), Tampa Bay at Georgia (-10), Colorado at Grand Rapids (+6.5), Dallas at Columbus (+6) and Chicago at Arizona (+5.5). Sunday's lone game has Philadelphia traveling to Austin (+5.5).

The new WNBA season continues Friday night with three games, including Chicago at Minnesota, Seattle at San Antonio and Houston at Phoenix. There’s only one game on the WNBA schedule on Saturday, as Los Angeles visits Connecticut.

NASCAR returns to Lowe’s Motor Speedway this weekend for the longest race of the season, the Coca-Cola 600. Kasey Kahne won this race last season, but he’s still looking for his first checkered flag finish this year. Jimmie Johnson is the favorite at Lowe’s at 3/1, while points leader Jeff Gordon is also considered a top favorite at 5/1.

After a two-week break Formula 1 heads back to the track this weekend at the Monaco Grand Prix. Felipe Massa is coming off a win in Spain the last time the drivers of F1 took to the track, but Fernando Alonso was the fastest driver at Monaco last year.

Interesting that only night were favorites have been good is also only night where overs have been profitable. Is there a correlation between favorites and the over?

Friday's list of 13: Random thoughts on a 90-degree day.....

        13) Simply put, Cavaliers don't have complimentary players a championship teams need; there is no doubt in my mind Larry Hughes choked on the open 10-footer to give Cavaliers lead in last 0:10. Watch the replay, he fades away, instead of just knocking the shot down, like a confident player would have.

        12) Cleveland scored 26 points in the second half, after they scored 34 in second quarter. Don't blame the refs, either.

        11) Cowboys' new stadium is going to seat around 100,000, a little more than the Redskins' stadium does; it will also have 200 or so luxury boxes. Jerry Jones definitely knows business

        10) Twins are just 5-5 in Santana starts, mainly because they scored three or less runs in seven of the ten games. They are 3-0 when they give him more than three runs.

        9) Phillies-Marlins series was fun to watch this week; action all over the place: controversial calls, beanballs, clutch hits in late-game situations, rain delays, extra innings, even a closer blowing his shoulder out. Too bad no one in Miami goes to the games; there is that much to do in Florida?

        8) I wasn't aware that PGA golfers (or their caddies) weren't allowed to walk the course before they play each day. Playing in the afternoon would be a big advantage, if they could.

        7) A Canadian billionaire, one of guys who owns a company that makes Blackberrys, bought the Nashville Predators, so it will become a hot rumor that Preds will move to Hamilton, as it was rumored when he was trying to buy the Penguins.

        6) Tommy John had pitched for 12 years in big leagues before he had the original "Tommy John surgery". After sitting out a season to rehab, he went on to pitch another 14 years in the majors. Wonder how many guys have had that operation in the 32 years since then?

        5) Since April 21, JD Drew is hitting a paltry .169.

        4) Astros lost their last five games by combined score of 40-5.

        3) Carl Pavano's final tally for Bronx Bombers:
Money earned after contract expires in 2008 (he'll miss rest of this year and next after surgery): $39.5M, for four years
Starts: 19. Wins: 5. Losses: 7. Nicely done.

        2) Seton Hall averaged averaged 6,636 fans in Meadowlands last year, fifteen miles from campus. This season, they move to a brand-new arena in Newark, four miles from the campus, and it should help them in recruiting. Maybe not next winter, but pretty soon, the Pirates will become a force again.

        1) Six National League teams aren't playing on Memorial Day, a national holiday. What genius makes this schedule? There was a time when teams played doubleheaders on holidays. At the very least, every team should play, even if they take the next night off. It would help in promoting the game.

                    SCOREBOARD

                    Friday, May 25

Milwaukee at San Diego (10:05 p.m. EDT). San Diego's Greg Maddux faces left-hander Dave Bush.

                    STARS Thursday

-Carlos Guillen, Tigers, homered twice and drove in five runs in a 12-0 rout of the Los Angeles Angels.

-Micah Owings, Astros, struck out a season-high eight in his first complete game to lead Houston to a 9-1 win over Arizona.

-John Smoltz, Braves, pitched seven shutout innings and became baseball''s first pitcher with 200 wins and 150 saves with a 2-1 win over the Mets.

                    FAST START

Ichiro Suzuki went 3-for-6 with a homer in his 1,000th major league game. Suzuki, who extended his hitting streak to 17 games, has 1,414 hits - the second most by a player in his first 1,000 games since 1900. Hall of Famer Al Simmons (1924-44) had 1,443 hits in that span.

                    MILESTONES

John Smoltz became baseball''s first pitcher with 200 wins and 150 saves, achieving the feat by throwing seven shutout innings to lead the Atlanta Braves to a 2-1 win over the New York Mets on Thursday night. Smoltz saved an Atlanta-record 154 games as the Braves' closer from 2001 through 2004. ... Frank Thomas hit his 493rd career home run in Toronto's 5-4, 10-inning win over Baltimore Thursday night, tying Lou Gehrig and Fred McGriff for 21st on the career list.

                    BAD NEWS BUCCANEERS

St. Louis beat Pittsburgh 3-1 on Thursday to complete a three-game sweep. Both of the Cardinals' sweeps this season have come against the Pirates, the other on the road in April. Before the series, the defending World Series champions had lost five in a row and were nine games below .500.

                    RUSTY ROCKET

Roger Clemens probably will make another minor league start before rejoining the New York Yankees. Clemens struggled Wednesday night for Double-A Trenton, allowing three runs and six hits with four walks, five strikeouts, a hit batter and a wild pitch in 5 1-3 innings. If the 44-year-old right-hander starts Monday at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, he would be on track to make his first start for the Yankees at Fenway Park on June 2 or 3 against Boston.

                    WELCOME BACK

Jeremy Bonderman made a strong return from the disabled list Thursday to help Detroit beat the Los Angeles Angels 12-0. Bonderman (3-0), pitching for the first time since May 8 after missing two starts with a blister on his right middle finger, gave up four hits, walked five and struck out six in eight innings to win for the third time in as many starts.

                    STREAKS

The Arizona Diamondbacks routed Houston 9-1 on Thursday night, sending the Astros to their fifth straight loss.

                    WILD ONE

Carl Crawford had three RBIs and triggered a seven-run third inning, leading the Tampa Bay Devil Rays past the Seattle Mariners 13-12 on Thursday. Seven of Tampa Bay's nine starters drove in at least one run. Jae Seo (3-4) gave up seven runs and 13 hits over 5-plus innings to earn the win.

                    SPEAKING

''Sometimes you need a little fire. I''m not going to back down from anything. ... It's over with. We won. So keep moving.'' - Dontrelle Willis, angry because he thought the Phillies' Jon Lieber intentionally threw behind him in Florida''s 5-4, 11-inning win over the Phillies on Thursday. Willis began shouting at the Philadelphia dugout and the benches and bullpens emptied, but no players were ejected during the fourth-inning episode.

                    SEASONS May 25

1906 - Jesse Tannehill''s 3-0 victory over the Chicago White Sox snapped a 20-game losing streak - 19 at home - for the Boston Red Sox.

1935 - Babe Ruth, winding up his career with the Boston Braves, hit three homers and a single at Pittsburgh, but the Pirates won 11-7. Ruth connected once off Red Lucas and twice off Guy Bush.

1951 - Willie Mays, a highly touted rookie for the Giants, went 0-for-5 in his debut against the Philadelphia Phillies.

1982 - Ferguson Jenkins became the seventh pitcher to strike out 3,000 batters in the Chicago Cubs' 2-1 loss at San Diego. Jenkins reached the milestone by striking out Garry Templeton in the third inning.

2001 - Kerry Wood of the Chicago Cubs allowed one hit and struck out 14 in a 1-0 win over the Brewers. Wood took a no-hit bid into the seventh before giving up a leadoff single to Mark Loretta.

2001 - Hideo Nomo of the Boston Red Sox tossed a one-hitter and struck out 14 in a 4-0 win over Toronto. Nomo faced one batter over the minimum of 27, giving up a leadoff double in the fourth to Shannon Stewart.

2002 - Shawn Green of the Los Angeles Dodgers homered twice in a 10-5 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks, setting a major league record with seven homers in his last three games.

Today's birthdays: Jason Kubel, 25; Scott Hairston, 27; Chris Young, 28; Miguel Tejada, 31; Todd Walker, 34.

                      MLB
                      Dunkel Index

                      Seattle at Kansas City
Gil Meche will look to rebound from a bad start in Colorado (5 runs on 8 hits over 5 innings) against the team that he beat on the road back on April 28. With the exception of the Colorado start, Meche has been the model of consistency. He has led the Royals to wins in four of his last five appearances, including a pair of victories over the AL's ERA leader Dan Haren. Meche's pitching has helped jumpstart the Royals, who are now 8-3 over their last 11 games. Seattle did take two-out-of-three from the last-place D-Rays heading in, but have struggled with a 3-6 record over their last nine games. Felix Hernandez, making his third start since coming off the DL, hasn't picked up a win since April 11. The Royals look like a good underdog pick (+116) in this one according to Dunkel, which has Kansas City favored straight up by 1 1/2. Dunkel Pick: Kansas City (+116). Here are all of today's games.

                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                          HOT

Danny Haren (Oakland Athletics) - With Barry Zito bolting to San Francisco in the offseason, Danny Haren has embraced the ace role for the Oakland Athletics. The right-hander is 4-2 with a 1.74 ERA (lowest in the AL) and a spectacular 0.94 WHIP. Overall, he has allowed three or fewer runs in each of his 10 starts this season and has lasted at least five innings in all of them. Haren is 2-2 with a 3.60 ERA in five career starts against the Orioles and 2-0 with a 1.80 ERA in three starts at Camden Yards. Oddsmakers list the A's as -103 underdogs against Baltimore with the total set at 7 1/2 runs.

Paul Byrd (Cleveland Indians) - The veteran hurler is 4-1 with a solid 3.55 ERA and 1.25 WHIP this season for the Indians. Byrd is 3-0 in his last five outings and has allowed more than three earned runs just once over that period. Furthermore, the right-hander is 6-2 with a 3.04 ERA against the Detroit Tigers and has allowed over three earned just twice in his last 10 starts against the Tigers. Oddsmakers list the Indians as +113 road underdogs against Detroit with the total set at 10 runs.

                          COLD

Woody Williams (Houston Astros) - The season hasn't been kind to Woody Williams. He's 1-6 with a lofty 5.52 ERA and a 1.53 WHIP in 10 starts this season. The veteran starter is coming off his worst outing of the season, allowing five earned runs off eight hits in four innings against the Texas Rangers. Williams is 8-7 with a 3.27 ERA in 21 starts against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Oddsmakers list the Astros as +113 road underdogs against the Diamondbacks with the total set at 10 runs.

Paul Maholm (Pittsburgh Pirates) - Paul Maholm has struggled mightily this season against the Cincinnati Reds. The left-hander is 0-2 with a 10.00 ERA in two starts against the Reds last month, including his worst outing of the season where he allowed six earned runs and seven hits in four innings. Overall, the lefty is 2-6 with a 5.82 ERA and 1.49 WHIP and 2-3 with a 5.51 ERA in eight career starts against the Reds. The Pirates are also 6-13 in Maholm's last 19 starts outside PNC Park. Oddsmakers list the Pirates as +147 road underdogs with the total set at 9 1/2 runs.

Anthony Reyes (St. Louis Cardinals) - It's almost impossible for a pitcher to be any colder than Anthony Reyes. In fact, the only pitcher with more losses than Reyes is his own teammate, Kip Wells (2-8, 6.10 ERA). Reyes is 0-7 with an embarrassing 5.84 ERA and 1.23 WHIP in eight starts and is coming off his worst start of the campaign where he allowed seven earned runs and nine hits in just over five innings against the Detroit Tigers. Oddsmakers list the Cardinals as -160 home favorites with the total set at 9 runs.

                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oakland Athletics at Baltimore Orioles (-105, 7 ½)

Erik Bedard is the king of the no-decision.

The 28-year-old left-hander has pitched well in each of his last five starts, with a 2.73 ERA and 44 strikeouts in 33 innings. A shaky Orioles offense and an even shakier Orioles bullpen have kept Bedard from his fourth win of the season for over a month.

Baltimore has one of the worst bullpens in the major leagues this season. Orioles’ relievers have a 4.81 ERA and a 1.46 WHIP in 147 2/3 innings this season.

Their bats are also ice cold. Baltimore is averaging just four runs per game over its last six and has a .741 OPS during that time.

Bad news considering they are up against one of the best pitchers in baseball this season in Oakland’s Danny Haren. The big right-hander is second in the majors in ERA at 1.72 and third in WHIP at 0.94. He has allowed more than three runs just once in 10 starts this season.

                            Pick: Athletics -103

Los Angeles Angels at New York Yankees (-121, 9 ½)

New York’s Tyler Clippard was lights out in his first career start against the New York Mets on Sunday Night Baseball, and says he’s pumped for his first career start at Yankee Stadium. Problem is, Clippard is only the second-best young pitcher in this matchup.

The Angels’ Jered Weaver is overcoming some early struggles to regain last season’s form. The 24-year-old is 2-0 with a 1.83 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP in his last three starts, all Angels wins, after going 11-2 with a 2.56 ERA for Los Angeles last season.

The Yankees also have to be weary of a letdown in this spot after a week for intense baseball. New York just wrapped up back-to-back three-game series against its two biggest rivals – the Mets and the Boston Red Sox.

                            Pick: Angels +113

Washington Nationals at St. Louis Cardinals (-160, 9)

The Nationals continue to roll against all odds. They took the final three games of their four-game series against Cincinnati this week and have now won 10 of their last 14 games overall despite being tagged as an underdog in every game.

Pitching carried Washington through the first 10 games of its streak, but it was the offense that really excelled against the Reds. The Nationals averaged eight runs per game during the series after failing to score more than seven runs in any one game in their first 44 games of the season.

They will have a great chance to keep their bats hot against struggling St. Louis starter Anthony Reyes. The 25-year-old is 0-7 with a 5.84 ERA in eight starts this season. Micah Bowie will pitch for Washington.

                            Pick: Nationals +152

                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
