    Six-pack for Monday

College basketball coaching; contract adjustments (ESPN's Andy Katz reported these figures on espn.com Friday).

-- John Calipari (Memphis) makes $1.8M+, and all he has to do is go unbeaten vs mostly stiff teams in Conference USA He'll get bored in that league before too much longer.

-- Reggie Theus (New Mexico State) saw his salary jump to $466,000, from $355,000, but as soon as NBA comes calling, he'll be gone. Aggies are going to have a huge hire when it comes time to fill the charismatic Theus' shoes.

-- Dennis Felton (Georgia) got a $50K raise to $760,000, and all he did was win one NIT game. Dawgs are expected to be an NCAA tournament team next winter.

-- Tony Bennett (Washington State) made $350,000 in 2007, least in Pac-10. He now has a new, seven-year contract with a substantial raise (exactly how much is unsure, but he isn't signing a seven-year deal without a whopping raise)

-- Southern Illinois is sick of losing coaches to schools with more resources; they jumped Chris Lowery's salary up from $250,000 to $750,000. Now thats a healthy raise.

-- Rick Pitino now makes $2.25M a year; he gets additional $3.6M if he is still coaching Louisville in 2013. Where does all this money for coaches in Kentucky come from?

Monday's Den: Wrapping up a sports weekend.........

      13) People at Belmont Park have to be sick after Street Sense lost close Preakness; chance for Triple Crown winner would have been huge for Belmont Park and New York racing.

      12) Right now, Tigers (11 games over .500), Braves (8 games over .500) would be the Wild Card teams. Memorial Day is a week away, so not too early to start following the races.

      11) Bronx-Queens series this weekend was lackluster, both on Saturday and Sunday. Sloppy, uninspired ball; maybe it was the weather, or the prospect of bigger series looming during this coming week (Bronx-Boston, Mets-Braves).

      10) John Smoltz hasn't allowed an earned run in 20.2 innings pitched in his career at Fenway Park.

      9) 101 guys have played for both Bronx Bombers and Mets.

      8) NBC dumped Buffalo-Ottawa playoff game that was going to overtime, so they could show Preakness pre-race special. NHL has to get on a network that shows it some respect and that people know where to find it. They need ESPN.

      7) NBC can't be terribly excited about Ottawa Senators being in Cup finals, especially if they play Anaheim. Not that teams aren't worthy, because they are, but TV ratings aren't going to get a jumpstart from a Canadian team vs a California team. Maybe if they promoted the league by staying with overtime game Saturday, all parties might have benefitted.

      6) Chone Figgins is 0 for last 22, and is hitting .103; if Angels can get him untracked, they're going to be tough to catch in the AL West. They also have resources to add payroll when the trading deadline rolls around.

      5) Angels have outscored foes 48-15 in first inning this year.

      4) Before Sunday, White Sox were only big league team that hadn't scored 5+ runs in an inning, but they scored seven in 7th inning to salvage last game of Windy City series.

      3) Devil Rays are 18-25, a bad team; James Shields has started nine of the 43 games. Tampa led or was tied in all nine games when Shields was taken out. He should be an All-Star.

      2) Speaking of Devil Rays, Rocco Baldelli is hurt again; could it be he is related to Carl Pavano? Baldelli is 1 for 38 in last ten games he actually played. Maybe his pride is hurt.

      1) Rays played three games at Disney World during week and drew 8,443/8,839/9,635. Not entirely sure what their goals are for the Orlando area, but it seems like a viable organization is not going to be selling off home games to other cities, unless moving to that city was a possibility.

          Monday, May 21

Detroit won three of four games vs Cleveland this season, with teams splitting pair in Auburn Hills (Cavs 101-97/Detroit 87-82). Cavs are 7-0 in playoffs when they score 86+ points; they're 4-1 on road. Detroit has edge in experience; this is fifth year in row for them in conference finals, while it is Lebron's first, but when the underdog has the best player on court, they are dangerous. Up to Hughes/Ilgauskus to step up, give some support.

Boston Red Sox at New York Yankees (ESPN | 7:05 PM ET)
Boston starter Tim Wakefield is 9-14 with a 4.61 ERA in 43 career appearances against New York. He picked up his third loss of the season against the Yankees on April 28, allowing three earned runs and five hits over 5 1/3 innings of work. EDGE: YANKEES

Yankees right-hander Chien-Ming Wang hopes to build off his last start, an 8-1 road victory over the White Sox. He surrendered just one run and six hits over seven innings. EDGE: YANKEES
The Red Sox are 10-1 in their last 11 road games versus a right-handed starter.

Washington Nationals at Cincinnati Reds (7:10 PM ET)
The Washington Nationals have lost eight straight road games and their offense ranks last in the NL in virtually every category. Washington has been outscored 37-18 during an eight-game road skid and is 5-15 away from RFK Stadium. EDGE: REDS
Cincinnati starter Bronson Arroyo is 1-0 in two career starts against Washington, allowing seven hits in 16 scoreless innings with three walks and 16 strikeouts. EDGE: REDS

#2 Cleveland Cavaliers at #1 Detroit Pistons
                Game 1 - Monday, May 21st, 8 p.m. Eastern (TNT)

The Pistons know the Cavs can beat them in a game, but a seve-game series is another story. In fact, last year's second-round matchup was a huge wake-up call, as Detroit had to rally back from a 3-2 deficit to win that series. "What helps us is what they did to us last year," Detroit head coach Flip Saunders said. "That's a positive for us. They had us down, and we came back and knew we had to win Game 6 to get to Game 7. That's why this year, except for the one game when we got beat in overtime, we came out focused knowing if we didn't, they would beat us." EDGE: PISTONS
The Cavaliers are a better team than they were last year, as LeBron James has learned to trust his teammates a lot more. Larry Hughes is also heathier than he was last year and gives Cleveland a big guard for Chauncey Billups and Richard Hamilton to worry about. "The difference between them a year ago or two years ago and this year, is that they're not a one-man team," Saunders said. "They have more people they can go to, they play their bench more and they always seem to have someone who comes up big for them." EDGE: CAVS
Both teams showed flaws in the last round, losing a couple games apiece after sweeping their first-round opponents. The difference is that the Pistons played a much better foe, as both of Cleveland's opponents in the first two rounds barely finished .500. Detroit is playing in the Eastern Conference Finals for the fifth straight year while the Cavs haven't been here since 1992. That experience for the Pistons is a major advantage in this series. BIG EDGE: PISTONS
Cleveland is 18-6-1 ATS in its last 26 road games.
Detroit is 21-9-3 ATS in its last 33 games overall.
UNDER is 21-5 in the last 26 meetings, including 10-3 at Detroit.

EASTERN CONFERENCE FINALS (HOME team in CAPS)

                SCHEDULE

5/21/07 - Game 1 - Cleveland Cavaliers at DETROIT PISTONS (TNT | 8 PM ET)

5/29/07 - Game 4 - Detroit Pistons at CLEVELAND CAVALIERS (TNT | 8 PM ET)
5/31/07 - Game 5 - Cleveland Cavaliers at DETROIT PISTONS (TNT | 8 PM ET)
6/2/07 - Game 6 - Detroit Pistons at CLEVELAND CAVALIERS (TNT | 8:30 PM ET)
6/4/07 - Game 7 - Cleveland Cavaliers at DETROIT PISTONS (TNT | 8 PM ET)

                REGULAR-SEASON RESULTS

Detroit wins 3-1 SU (2-2 ATS)
                UNDER 3-1

                4/8/07 - DETROIT 97, Cleveland 92 (ATS winner: Cleve +5.5 | UNDER 181)
                3/7/07 - Cleveland 101, DETROIT 97 (ATS winner: Cleve +5 | OVER 179)
                2/4/07 - Detroit 90, CLEVELAND 78 (ATS winner: Detroit +2.5 | UNDER 184)
                12/27/06 - Detroit 87, CLEVELAND 71 (ATS winner: Detroit +3 | UNDER 184)

REGULAR-SEASON SERIES RECAP: LeBron James scored a season-high 41 points in the third meeting at Detroit to lead Cleveland to its first win against the Pistons since Game 5 of their second-round series last May. That was the only win in the regular-season series for the Cavs, as Detroit won both meetings in Cleveland by an average of 14 points. That lack of a home-court edge along with the Pistons' dominance on the road - where they were an Eastern Conference-best 27-14 - could be the difference.

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cleveland Cavaliers at Detroit Pistons (-6, 176 ½)

The Cavs are going to quickly learn that the Pistons are a much better shooting team than the New Jersey Nets. Cleveland was credited with making things difficult for the Nets but in reality New Jersey simply doesn't have consistent shooters.

Jason Kidd and Richard Jefferson will never be mistaken for marksmen and Vince Carter is an average shooter behind the 3-point line. The Cavs are a good defensive team but they benefited from many missed opportunities when New Jersey had open looks.

Meanwhile the Pistons have shooters at every position and extend defenses because of their offensive touch on the perimeter.

“(The Pistons) play the game so well that you think you’re in the game and with about a minute and a half left in the quarter, they take it up a notch,” Cavs coach Mike Brown told the Cleveland Plain Dealer. “They’ll go on a small run and the next thing you know, you’re in the fourth quarter and you’re down eight we don’t know how it happened. We have to be extremely careful in how we close out quarters with this team because they’re one of the best at (closing quarters).”

There shouldn’t be any letup in the Pistons’ attack against Cleveland. The Cavs took Detroit to seven games in the playoffs last year even though the Pistons won the first two games. Cleveland is 0-11 in the franchise’s history when opening Game 1 of a series on the road.

                  Pick: Pistons -6

                              Boston at NY Yankees
Despite last night's series-salvager against the Mets, the Yankees come into this important series having won only three of their last 10. Starter Chien-Ming Wang has been subpar at home with a 1-2 record and 5.37 ERA so far. The Red Sox took two-out-of-three from the Braves over the weekend and have now won 11 of their last 14. Tim Wakefield has been tough on the road with a 3-2 record and 1.40 ERA. With Boston having dominated the Yankees so far (5-1 record head-to-head), the Red Sox look like a good underdog pick (+136) according to Dunkel, which has Boston favored straight up by 1. Dunkel Pick: Boston (+136). Here are all of today's games.
